Chapter 4 - a new ally

Shin had woken up particularly sleepy that morning, yet he couldn't stay over since he had his shift as a bodyguard at Jeng's residence. Chingching had stayed over at a friend's house and would be back in the afternoon, as he had written in a message. At that point, Shin, after dressing in black pants and a white shirt, puts on a sweatshirt and carries his jacket in his hand. That morning it was a bit cool so he would have put on his jacket once he got to Jeng's. As he was about to set foot outside the house, after putting on his shoes, he heard a doorbell, and when he went out he saw the last person he wanted to see.

"What the fuck are you doing here? I told you to leave me alone." Shin points out as soon as he sees Saint.

"I need to talk to you, it's important." Saint tells him.

"Do you know how much I care about what you have to say?" Shin pushes him and is about to close the gate behind him and drive away.

However, Saint stops him by grabbing his wrist and says: "can you listen to me for just a minute?"

"I don't want to talk to you, what language do I have to make you understand in?" Shin struggles to free himself from Saint's grip.

"At least accept this." Saint hands him a bag.

"Whatever it is, I don't care." Shin replies.

Saint had brought him Khanom Krok in a bag, small sweet pancakes made with a base of rice flour and coconut milk, cooked in a special pan that makes them soft in the center and crispy on the outside, served with fresh spring onion, made by him.

"Have these for breakfast." Saint once again offers him the bag he had previously refused to accept.

Shin picks it up and Saint is about to smile since he had managed to convince him, however this smile doesn't come because Shin forcefully throws the bag on the ground, and leaves, without saying a word to him. He starts his car and doesn't even give Saint time to ask him for information about Jeng. How can he convince him to listen to him?

Saint decides that he will think about it later, picks up the bag that his friend had thrown on the ground and brings it back with him. While he is picking it up, he receives a call from Sung.

"I found the person we were looking for." he tells him on his cell phone without explaining too many details.

"I'm coming." Saint replies, who immediately goes to Sung's house to decide what to do.

When he gets there, Sung tells him that the person who worked on the explosion case was a woman named Jan, who apparently moved to the countryside right after the case was closed. So, they decide to go visit her at her cottage in the countryside an hour away from the city. Sung invites Saint and Ken to come with him, and wishes the other bodyguards good luck. They dress in jeans and sweatshirts to look like normal citizens and not arouse suspicion, Sung also wears sunglasses. Since he was very famous, he was always afraid that someone would follow him, so he lets Ken drive and lets Saint go in front, while he stays in the back.

"Did Shin tell you anything about Jeng?" Sung asks as they start to make their way through the traffic.

"I didn't even get to ask him, Shin doesn't even want to see my picture." Saint tries to make the situation funny, even though there was little to joke about.

"I thought you were friends." Ken adds.

"I consider him my best friend and I will continue to do so even if he is angry with me and does not want to know anything about me." Saint replies with a sincere smile.

"Damn, if he won't say a word to you, you've really messed up." Ken tells him sincerely.

"I'm an asshole and I've hurt him a lot in the past. I didn't think I'd have the chance to see him again, but now that it's happened, I want to try to make amends and win back his trust. I've realized that no matter how hard I try, I can never put Shin aside." Saint reports.

"I hope you guys can get back to being friends like before, and even though I don't know exactly what happened, I can tell from the way you talk about it that you really care about him." Ken gives him an encouraging smile.

"I agree, plus, if you could convince him, he could help us." Sung joins in the conversation.

Skyscrapers and modern apartment buildings dominate the landscape at the start of the journey. The sounds of traffic mix with the distant sound of birds, and the neon signs of food stalls illuminate the sidewalks still crowded with early-bird vendors. After that stretch, the city gives way to small villages and rice paddies that shine under the morning sun. The streets become narrower, surrounded by rows of palm trees and a few fruit trees. Some farmers are already in the fields, bent over to work, and traditional Thai wooden houses on stilts begin to appear on the sides of the road.

As soon as they arrive at the destination address they had discovered, they notice a small, almost entirely white house. They park and decide to ring the intercom. After a few moments, a woman with long brown hair and light eyes comes out of the house to check who it is. As soon as she sees the three from the edge, she is a little perplexed. She approaches and recognizes Sung.

"Sorry, I think you have the wrong address." she says with a smile as she approaches the gate.

"You're Jan, right?" Sung asks.

"I am. You were looking for me? I didn't think a famous actor like Sung would be looking for someone like me." she jokes.

"I'm happy that you know me, and it's a pleasure for us to meet you. Could you let us in? We want to talk to you about something very important." Sung adds.

"What is it about?" she asks.

"It's about the case you were given five years ago in Bangkok, the explosion at Phraya Grand Mall." Saint answers this time.

The woman stiffens when she hears that name, but she agrees to let the three of them into her house. She gets them glasses of water and invites them to sit on the couch.

"I apologize for dropping by unexpectedly, I know it's probably something you don't want to talk about, but you can trust us." Sung reassures her.

"We're investigating the case secretly because we don't think it was an accident." Saint adds.

The woman looks at him with a slightly sad expression and nods.

"I have worked for the secret service for several years, I am investigating this matter and knowing the truth about this case is of vital importance to me since my sister died in the explosion, and also the father of the boy who is here with me." Sung points to Saint.

"I am very sorry for your losses." she replies.

The two thank her, then Ken takes the floor: "we found out that you are the inspector who proposed reopening the case, can you tell us what happened?"

The woman takes a deep breath and then begins to speak: "When the explosion occurred and, shortly after the event, my colleagues carried out inspections of the place, I was told that the electrical system had probably short-circuited enough to cause damage of this magnitude. At the police station I saw that some police officers were behaving in a rather ambiguous way. It seemed as if they did not realize the gravity of what had happened. Without a doubt, it shocked everyone, but this shock dissolved in a very short time and it seems that they were in a hurry to close the case. I have always been a very scrupulous inspector and I could not understand how the human race could feel so much indifference towards 35 people who died unjustly and towards their families. On television it was often talked about, it was talked about for a few days, I think you saw it too, but the victims were only generalized into a number, their names were never explicitly revealed. The names were known by hearsay from their families, for the journalists there were only 35 citizens who had lost their lives in an accident, for them they did not have a name."

She pauses for a moment and then speaks again under the watchful gaze of the three: "I found it all rather unusual, so I secretly went to do a survey at the shopping center, a friend of mine worked there and I managed to see the electrical system that seemed to have caused that terrible explosion. When I saw it I immediately noticed something. It was an old system that definitely needed maintenance." the woman lets her know what she wanted to say.

"Didn't they change the system immediately after the explosion?" Sung asks.

"No, because the system has never caused any explosion." the woman completes.

The three look at each other, now they had confirmation that they were right, then they urge the woman to continue.

"However, they found out about my secret inspection and I was scolded. I asked to reopen the case because I found it all very suspicious, and I was initially granted permission. I don't know what happened but my old boss closed the case after a few days, declaring it an accident and relieving me of my duties." she says.

"Is that why you moved here or did someone force you to?" Sung asks.

"When I got home that night, I found an envelope between the bars of my gate. I opened it and inside was a threat from an anonymous person to kill me if I didn't leave." she adds.

"This is even more absurd than we thought." Saint comments.

"Did you manage to find out anything during the time you were in charge of the case?" Sung asks.

"I kept looking for evidence even after I was relieved of my duties and I honestly couldn't find much information, but there is something that might help you, just wait." The woman gets up to go get something from another room.

She comes back with a small plastic bag containing a photo and a piece of newspaper.

"Jeng." Shin whispers.

"This woman..." Sung realizes who it is.

"This woman is one of the victims of the mall explosion. She was a secretary to the foreign minister of South Korea and is said to be the lover of our dear government official." the woman concludes.

Saint and Ken also look at the newspaper article that reported a possible scandal involving Jeng and his lover.

"Jeng is definitely involved." Saint says.

"I'm sure there are other people involved. This is too big for one person to have planned, just look at how easily they manipulated public opinion, and how they quickly swept this case into oblivion." Jan replies.

"Can I take these with me? I assure you, no one will know that you gave them to me." Sung asks the woman if he can take the evidence with him. The woman nods and smiles at him.

"Can I ask you a question?" Ken asks the woman.

"Sure, go ahead and tell me." she encourages him.

"Why did you trust us and tell us all this information?" he asks.

"I'm just a big fan of Shattered Illusions." The woman looks at Sung with a smile.

"It's really an honor to know that you're a fan of my first series. And thank you for trusting us." Sung smiles back.

"Aren't you afraid that someone might find out that you let this information slip?" Saint asks, as everyone stands up as they're leaving.

"Honestly, I'm happy with my career, it's fulfilled me a lot over the years and this case was the only case that left me with a bitter taste in my mouth for not being able to do much and bring justice to the victims and their families. But knowing that there's still someone who is doing it makes me very happy. I've always rooted for justice and if something has to happen to me because I chose to help someone else and bring them justice then I'm ready to accept it."

The woman's words deeply affect the three, then they wish her to have a good day and leave, leaving the country house behind.

"We'll think carefully about what to do in the next few days." Sung comments while they are in the car.

Ken and Saint nod and continue on their journey back to the city. When they return to Bangkok after an hour, Saint stops at a fast-food restaurant with his scooter, which he picks up at Sung's house, and gets a hamburger with chicken, salad and mayonnaise, then goes to Shin's house. He wanted to see if he was there to try to talk to him again, but when he is about to get closer to the house, he notices that everything is closed. He stands near the trees and does not show himself, when suddenly he sees a bus stop just before Shin's house. He sees Chingching walking towards the gate and entering the house. He still has to realize that she has grown up and is no longer a child, he has not yet gotten used to the age that Shin's sister actually is. With a smile, he gets back on his scooter and leaves, with the hope of being able to return, one day, to spend his days in those four walls that have profoundly marked his, not only childhood, but also his entire life.
