Chapter 17 - kidnapping

It's afternoon and Shin has just gotten out of the hospital. He's waiting for Saint to pick him up with his sister. He didn't have his car with him and it bothered him a little to have to ask Saint for help, but then again, he knew that Saint would never say no to him. He really couldn't understand his behavior. For Saint it almost seems like everything that happened seven years ago never happened, he's interested in Shin, he even brings him food to the hospital, plus he actually owes him a favor for picking up his sister from school. Shin thought that Saint hated him, but it seemed like the opposite. He seemed to really care about him, this ever since they met again for the first time in that hotel, not to mention when he took a knife to the shoulder protecting him. Shin really wanted to understand what was going through his mind, but the more he tried, the more he couldn't understand it.

He comes back to reality when he receives a call from his sister.

"Chingching, what's going on?" Shin asks him.

"Is P'Saint there with you by any chance?" his sister asks him.

"I thought he came to pick you up, hasn't he arrived yet? How strange." Shin replies.

"He hasn't arrived yet." she adds.

"Don't worry, I'll find a way and come get you. Stay where you are." Shin tells him.

Then he tries to think rationally about what to do. It was impossible for Saint to forget to pick up his sister, so something must have happened to him. But now how can he go and pick up Chingching? He doesn't have his car.

While he thinks of a way, a black van stops right in front of him, he rolls down the window and sees Sung driving, Saint's boss.

"Shin jumps in." he says to him.

The boy immediately gets into the large van and sees several men there.

"What's going on? Where's Saint?" Shin asks.

"Someone took him and took him to a warehouse a little far from here, I think it was Jeng's work." Sung replies.

"Damn, my sister." he says worried about her.

"Let's go get her right now, don't worry." Sung tells him.

Then he speeds away from the hospital and they head towards Chingching school following Shin's directions. He was terribly worried, he had a bad feeling that someone would take her and take her away. They had to hurry, otherwise it would be too late.

"How did you find out about Saint?" he asks as Sung exceeds the speed limit set by the road.

"We bodyguards have a watch that also has a button to press in case of emergencies. The watch also has GPS activated and when we saw that Saint didn't show up and didn't even answer the phone after coming to see you we got worried, so we saw that he was there." Ken replies.

"Damn." Shin says clenching his fists.

"Don't worry, Saint will be fine." Ken adds.

"It's all my fault, I was the one who got him involved." Shin replies, looking down.

"Don't blame yourself, Saint has been involved in this matter since he chose to be my bodyguard. You have nothing to do with it and he wouldn't want me to say this either." Sung replies.

They get closer to Chingching's school but they see a black SUV carrying someone inside it.

"CHINGCHING!" Shin shouts, struggling with the intention of getting out of the van to go there.

"CHINGCHING!" he repeats again, raising his voice even more.

"Shin, calm down now, we can't do anything but follow them. I'm sure they're taking her to where Saint is." Ken tells him.

"This time Jeng will pay for it." Shin adds with anger in his eyes.

Sung then follows the car and leaves the city to head straight for that abandoned warehouse where they had also taken Saint.

Shin was worried and angry at the same time. He couldn't believe that Jeng would go that far, because he knew perfectly well that Jeng did it. He felt guilty for putting both his sister and Saint in danger. If he hadn't involved Saint in his latest plan, this probably wouldn't have happened. If he had stayed away from him, this wouldn't have happened. Every time, it was always Saint involved. Jeng must have found out that they collaborated and so he decided to take revenge by taking both Saint and his sister away. Shin felt really useless, a complete idiot and guilty of everything. He wanted to blame the whole situation on Saint, because since he reappeared, everything went wrong, but the truth is that Saint had nothing to do with it. When he kindly asked him to stay away from him, it was because Jeng had found out about their meeting and was afraid that something would happen to his sister. However, when Saint told him that he wanted to sneak into the vice minister's house to get the computer back, Shin did nothing but follow him, ending up breaking the request that he himself had made to Saint to stay away from him and Chingching, and this is because, even if he wanted to prove the opposite, Shin still cared about Saint. Even though he had destroyed him, he cared and that night he was worried about him, so he followed him and they broke into the vice minister's villa together. The truth is that Shin, as much as he tried, could not hate Saint as he wanted to make people believe, and that non-hatred towards him was the double-edged sword that ended up piercing him.

Saint wakes up completely dazed and with no memory of what actually happened, when he sees a large area in front of him, with a high ceiling that almost seems to disappear into the darkness. Large pipes and metal beams crisscross overhead, many of which are corroded by time. In some places, rainwater seeps through the damaged roof, forming puddles on the rough concrete floor. The center of the warehouse has been cleared out to create a functional space. An old, battered desk has been placed as a base, with some scattered maps and tools on top, and a work lamp illuminates the surrounding area. Behind the desk, wooden crates are stacked, some open with their contents, tools or perhaps weapons, partially visible.

He realizes that he is connected to a wooden pole with a chain. When he turns around, his eyes widen at the sight he has: "CHINGCHING!" he shouts as he sees her tied to the other pole, with tape over her mouth and unconscious.

At one point he hears someone clapping their hands and saying: "you finally woke up." It was Jeng.

"Jeng bastard, what the fuck did you do?" Saint asks him.

"I didn't do anything at all, you're the one who's paying the consequences of what you did." the man replies.

"Can I know what you want? And why did you bring Shin's sister here too, you really are a piece of shit." Saint adds.

"Shin has joined your side and how could I get revenge if not by taking away the people he cares about the most?" he laughs evilly.

"You have to leave Shin and Chingching alone or you're a dead man." Saint replies.

"I don't think you're in a position to kill me, I'd almost say the opposite." Jeng adds ordering his men to make him stand up and hold him by his arms, while another punches him straight in the face causing him to bleed from the mouth.

"You want to kill me? Fine, but don't you dare do anything to Shin and his sister." Saint replies before receiving another blow straight to the face and then one on the thigh and left arm.

"You're so pathetic." Jeng replies continuing to have his men hit him.

"Along with his sister, I should have gotten rid of Sung too. I didn't think he would get in my way, but I see it runs in the family." Jeng adds.

"You're admitting to being complicit in the explosion and causing Nida's death, do you realize that?" Saint asks.

"You don't have the evidence to prove it, and always remember this Saint: whoever has the most money wins." he replies with a smile.

"You won't get away with this, rest assured." Saint tells him.

Jeng's men continue to hit him and make him bleed, especially on his face. Saint is really in bad shape. At one point he realizes that Chingching has woken up and is visibly scared, especially when she sees Saint in that condition.

"Everything will be okay." she whispers to him in an attempt to reassure her. But when he sees tears falling from her eyes, Saint can't help but be angry and want to take out that piece of shit Jeng.

Just when that thought crosses his mind, he hears someone breaking into the warehouse. When he sees Sung, Ken, Shin and other bodyguards he breathes a sigh of relief but at the same time begins to worry.

"Chingching! Saint!" Shin is about to approach the two of them but someone stops him by pointing a knife at him. Shin steps back for a moment and waits to act.

"Good, I see that now we are really all here." Jeng comments.

"Tell me what you want and let Saint and Shin's sister go or I'll get tough." Sung tells the politician.

"Do you think you have more power than me?" Jeng asks.

"I don't care about having power, I just need to know that I'm not a shitty person like you to live my life peacefully." after that sentence someone attacks him but Sung with a punch and a kick knocks him to the ground.

Jeng turns to his men without saying anything, Sung and the others see that they are removing the chains from Saint and Chinching, then holding them by both arms. Two men holding Saint and two holding Chingching.

"What the fuck do you want to do?" Shin asks, angrier than ever.

"You betrayed me, it's right that I take revenge." Jeng replies.

The men point a knife at Saint and Chingching's throat.

"Leave her alone!" Saint tries to struggle.

"What exactly do you want?" Sung then asks.

"I want you to stop meddling in matters that don't concern you, otherwise I'll make you end up like your sister." Jeng replies.

At that point Sung goes to attack him but some of his men stand in front of Jeng and fight Sung.

"So Shin, who do you want to save? Your friend or your sister?" Jeng asks him.

"Oh, I forgot. You have no choice because I'll kill them both." Jeng adds.

After that sentence Saint chooses to use his tactic of headbutting the person holding the knife. Even though he is wounded and in pain, he uses the little strength he has left to disarm the man, take the knife, close it and throw it towards Shin who catches it in mid-air.

Saint starts to struggle and tries to hit the two men who knock him down and hold him by the arms again.

An inevitable fight begins between Sung's men and Jeng's men, who also starts to fight and does it against Sung.

Shin approaches the two men who were holding his sister, he doesn't make any false steps because they could kill her in an instant, but when Ken from behind attacks the two men with two objects that give them shock, at that point he takes his sister and removes the tape from her mouth.

"Don't worry, I'll take care of your sister. You go help Saint." Ken tells him.

At that point Shin goes right there where two men were beating Saint, who was getting back up and didn't seem to want to give up, and before they could hit him with a kick straight to the stomach, Shin gets in front of Saint and takes the hit.

"Shin!" Saint shouts at that point, grabbing him from the ground.

Sung's men and Jeng's men end up half on the ground. Sung and some of the bodyguards are still standing, others are unconscious on the ground, the same goes for Jeng's group.

Ken, with the help of some backup he had called, manages to get Shin's sister out of there and put her safely in the van with the other bodyguards.

When he goes back inside he sees that Jeng is about to point a gun at Saint and Shin. As soon as Jeng sees him he orders him to stop or he will pull the trigger.

"Shin? Are you okay?" in the meantime Saint takes his friend in his arms.

"What a touching scene, do you want to say anything else before you die?" Jeng asks.

"I already told you, you can kill me but you must not touch Shin." Saint stands in front of Shin.

"What the fuck are you saying idiot?" Shin shouts at him.

"I won't let anyone hurt you again." Saint replies looking into his eyes.

Shin's eyes become watery.

At that moment, Saint's watch lights up for a moment and he understands what is about to happen.

Sung's bodyguards start dropping small smoke bombs to create confusion. When the room starts to fill with smoke, Saint hits Jeng and disarms him. He takes the gun with him and fires a shot in the air to scare the others. In the meantime, Sung and the others get out of the cloud of smoke and help the other injured guards get out of there.

"Come on Shin." Saint tells him as they help each other.

Once they are out, Saint throws the gun away to get rid of it and they head towards one of the two vans since Ken, in fact, had called for backup earlier.

When Shin is inside and sees his sister, he hugs her tightly.

"Are you okay?" he asks, stroking his head.

"I was afraid something would happen to you." she replies, looking at both Shin and Saint with tears in her eyes.

"I told you everything would be okay." Saint replies, also patting her on the head.

At that point Sung and Ken in front once inside say: "are we all here?"

Saint checks and gives the go-ahead to leave.

"Shin." he turns to his friend.

"You're okay, right?" he asks him.

"I'm fine." Shin replies.

"Now you and your sister will come to stay with me, this way you'll be safe." Sung tells him.

"Thank you." Shin simply replies. His sister then says the same.

During the return journey, Saint falls asleep, under Shin's somewhat worried gaze.

"You're such an idiot." he says watching him sleep.

After a few minutes Shin feels Saint's head on his shoulder. He remains still without doing anything and lets him sleep. He also closes his eyes to rest a bit.

Ken sees the scene in the mirror and smiles a little.

When they arrive at Sung's villa, they are both woken up by Ken and accompanied inside, in pain, along with Shin's sister.

"Come on, sit down." Shin orders Saint as soon as they arrive in the living room and sit at the table.

"What is it?" asks the boy.

"Sung, where is the first aid kit?" he asks the man once he sees him come back too, having already passed through the kitchen and taken it.

"Thank you." Shin replies once he hands it to him.

"Sit down." he says to Saint again.

At that point the boy listens to him and sits down.

Shin takes out the disinfectant, which he sprays on some cotton wool and starts to rub it on his face.

Saint didn't expect this gesture from Shin, in fact when he sees him taking care of his wounds he can't hold back a smile.

"Why the fuck are you smiling now?" Shin asks him.

"I'm just happy, that's all," Saint replies.

"Are you happy that you're in such a mess?" Shin adds, pressing the cotton wool and causing him pain on purpose.

"Be gentler." Saint complains, pouting.

Shin continues to treat his wounds, and Saint watches his every move. Every now and then Shin also looks into his eyes, but quickly looks away.

"That's it." he replies once he's disinfected everything.

He is about to put a band-aid on his right cheek and just then Saint's heart starts beating fast.

"Thank you, the blow you took to the stomach also needs to be treated." Saint replies ready to help Shin too.

"I'll take care of it, I think a little dressing and some cream will make it go away in a few days." Shin replies as he is about to get up.

Saint holds him by the wrist to say something.

"Why did you take the blow for me?" he asks.

"I simply repaid your gesture, you also took a blow to the shoulder for me, remember?" Shin replies.

"Don't ever do it again, I don't want you to get hurt because of me." Saint tells him.

"Let's get one thing straight, you and I are not friends again." Shin specifies after Saint's words.

"So what are we?" Saint asks.

"Colleagues, just colleagues bound by the same goal." Shin replies.

"Is there a chance that this being just colleagues could turn into something more, like friendship?" Saint ventures.

"I don't know, maybe one day very far away it will happen." Shin replies.

And that answer manages to make Saint happy, because for the first time Shin hadn't said no to him and the possibility of becoming his friend again had opened up.
