Chapter 13 - Shin's soccer match
"This is here." Saint begins, entering Sung's house with an envelope in his hand.
"What is it?" asks the man sitting at the table.
"Open it yourself." Saint hands it to him.
Sung opens the letter and realizes that it is an invitation. And not just any invitation. It was an invitation from the prime minister to attend a costume party at his villa that Saturday.
"They may be planning something." Sung comments.
"Do you think they want to try to kill you again?" Saint asks.
"That's not a very reassuring question, you know, Saint?" Sung asks him, letting out a laugh.
"You have to be careful." the boy then adds.
"Saturday is the day after tomorrow, even the fact that they told us on such short notice is strange." Sung replies.
"I have to tell you something, but don't get angry." Saint tells him, intending to confess what he had done since he had started his shift that morning and they hadn't seen each other before.
"What's going on? What did you do?" Sung asks him.
"Last night I infiltrated the vice minister's house." Saint answers sincerely.
"What did you do?! Are you crazy?" Sung asks him, raising his voice.
"I know, it was a risky move, but I didn't want you to get angry. I knew that if I had told you, you would have stopped me." Saint replies.
"I'm still angry, but do you think this is the right thing to do? And without telling anyone?" Sung asks him.
"I know, I'm sorry. I made a mistake and I won't do it again. On the other hand, I managed to recover the computer without being discovered and Shin helped me." Saint adds.
"What does Shin have to do with all this?" Sung asks.
"I asked him for the floor plan of the house and when I went to get the computer, without my knowledge, he followed me and helped me. If it hadn't been for him, I probably would have been caught." Saint replies.
"Why did he help you?" Sung asks further.
"He said he wanted to see if he could find out more, and since I was planning on breaking into the house, he joined in." Saint says.
"He had a plan in mind, then." Sung tells him.
"Yeah, that was great. I wouldn't have gotten out of there alive if I'd followed my plan." Saint replies.
"And what was your plan?" Sung asks, afraid of what his answer might be.
"Breaking in and attacking the bodyguards." Saint scratches the back of his head.
"Come here, come closer." Sung asks.
Saint does so, and the man slaps him on the back of the head, saying, "You're such an idiot, I still don't understand how I hired you as my bodyguard."
The boy chuckles in response, and then adds, in an ironically modest way, "I'm still Tsunami."
Sung shakes his head. He doesn't know what to do with Saint anymore, he's a lost case.
"By the way, I found something that might be useful for us." Saint unlocks his phone and shows him the photo he found.
"Interesting." Sung says.
"Do you think Dr. Rit is involved?" Saint asks.
"I don't know, after all, his granddaughter was involved in the explosion. Let's see if we can find out more. Let's take advantage of the costume party." Sung suggests.
Saint nods when Ken enters and says, "Everything is ready, we have to go."
"Where should we go?" Saint asks.
"I forgot to tell you, but today I have to attend a charity event at the new sports field. The kids from the surrounding neighborhoods are getting together to play a game of soccer for charity." Sung replies.
Saint nods and follows Sung along with Ken in the car. Ken would be driving. When they arrive, several fans ask Sung for a photo and he happily agrees to take them. He then makes his way to the new sports field with his bodyguards Saint and Ken.
The new football pitch is a large fenced area, surrounded by tall poles lit by modern LED floodlights that ensure optimum visibility even during night games, which were not necessary at that time of day since it was morning. The pitch is covered with high-quality synthetic grass, with precisely drawn white lines to delimit the playing areas, from the halfway line to the penalty shootout and the goal lines. On either side of the pitch are two rows of modern stands, with ergonomic seats made of coloured plastic. The main stand is covered by a transparent canopy to protect spectators from the sun or rain, and includes a VIP section with padded seats, in fact Sung, Saint and Ken had their seats reserved right there. Behind the main stands are the changing rooms. Next to them are toilets and a medical room. Next to the main pitch is a small warm-up area for the athletes, with equipment such as cones, hurdles and training balls. The facility is new and welcoming, with a palpable air of excitement for its visitors. During the day, the green of the field sparkles in the sun, while at night the contrast between the turf and the dark sky makes the field the visual center of the entire area.
"It's been a long time since I've seen a soccer game." Ken comments as he sits down, followed by Sung in the center and Saint to Sung's left.
"Me too." Saint replies.
At one point the teams enter the field amid applause and whistles of encouragement. Saint almost jumps at the sight of a familiar face. Shin, in a white jersey with gold details (his team's color) and also wearing the captain's armband, enters with the others. He seems relaxed but focused. His face has a fairly serious expression that is able to convey all his determination. As the announcer announces the names one by one, the players begin to shake hands before starting the game.
"I didn't think Shin would be there too." Saint says.
"Aren't you happy?" Ken turns to him.
"Very happy, I really want to see him." he replies with a smile.
Ken and Sung look at him and understand the reason for that smile, now that they knew the whole story they would support Saint.
The initial whistle rings and the ball is immediately thrown forward by the opposing team. Shin, positioned in midfield, carefully observes the movement of the opponents. A series of quick passes tries to overcome the defense, but Shin, anticipating the game, sprints towards the ball carrier. With a decisive movement, he slides in, touching the ball and bouncing it towards a teammate. The crowd applauds the gesture, while Shin quickly gets up. As he gets up, the boy notices the presence of someone in the stands who had stood up while everyone else remained seated, he realizes that it is Saint.
"Great save, Shin!" one of his teammates tells him.
He nods in response, already focused on the next play.
His team begins to push forward. A teammate on the right flank receives the ball and runs down the sideline. Shin moves into the center, waiting for the cross. When the ball arrives, he jumps with perfect timing, heading it. The trajectory is precise, but the opposing goalkeeper stretches and saves with a spectacular dive. Later in the game, Shin intercepts a dangerous pass from the opponents and runs down the flank, avoiding an aggressive tackle. The tension builds when, with a precise shot, he sends the ball towards the goal, but the opposing goalkeeper manages to save it at the last moment.
"I didn't think Shin was this good." Sung comments, looking at Saint.
"After all, football has always been his passion, so I'm not surprised he's even improved compared to before." Saint replies.
The pace of the game becomes more intense. The opponents begin to press hard, trying to regain control of the game. In midfield, Shin finds himself surrounded by two opponents. With a quick movement of his foot, he feints and changes direction, leaving them both behind. He advances towards the penalty area, but a defender steps in front of him. With a light touch, he passes the ball behind him, past him, and attempts a shot. The ball rises, skimming the crossbar. Shin shakes his head, disappointed, as the crowd cheers him on with applause, including Saint himself.
"I didn't think a charity friendly would be this exciting, Shin seems really determined." Sung adds.
"Shin doesn't like to lose." Saint replies.
Halfway through the first half, a counterattack by the opponents puts Shin's team's defense in difficulty. An opposing attacker finds himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Shin, running at full speed, manages to reach him. With a perfect slide, he steals the ball from the opponent's feet and sends it out.
"There were so many actions and yet the game is still 0-0. This is really exciting." Ken states.
"I'm sure the second half will be even more exciting." Saint comments.
The referee's whistle signals the start of the second half of the match. Now the score is still 0-0, and the tension is rising. Shin, visibly tired but determined, leads his team forward.
After the break, with the return to the field for the second half, the atmosphere at the sports field becomes even more electric. The floodlights illuminate every corner of the pitch, and the crowd in the stands continues to cheer on the teams. The score remains 0-0, adding a sense of urgency, and each player seems determined to make a difference.
The opposing team starts strong, trying to surprise the defense of Shin and his teammates. A long pass is intercepted on the fly by an opposing attacker, who immediately attempts a powerful shot. The goalkeeper of Shin's team dives, managing to deflect the ball over the crossbar. In the stands, a wave of tension dissolves into applause.
Shin, positioned in midfield, claps his hands to encourage his teammates.
"Come on, let's cover better and play forward!" he says.
Taking control of the game, Shin begins to orchestrate the play. He receives a short pass, dribbles past an opponent with a quick rotation and throws a long ball deep to a teammate on the right flank. The team advances compactly, but the attack is stopped by a rebound from the opposing defense.
Shortly after, Shin finds himself on the edge of the opponent's penalty area. A teammate passes him the ball and he, with perfect control, prepares to shoot. The crowd holds their breath as he kicks with power. The ball seems destined for the top corner, but the opposing goalkeeper performs a miracle, deflecting it with his fingertips.
Shin clutches his hair, visibly frustrated, but quickly composes himself.
"It doesn't matter, the next one will be the right one." he says to himself.
Midway through the second half, a counterattack by the opposition puts Shin's team in serious trouble. A fast forward passes two defenders and finds himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Shin, running at full speed, manages to catch up with him at the last moment, sliding to take the ball from his feet. The crowd erupts in a roar, applauding the decisive save.
"Keep it up, Shin." cheers Saint.
As time passes, there is no shortage of action and attempts to score. With five minutes left in regulation time, the game seems destined for a draw. Shin's team gets a throw-in near the opponent's penalty area. A teammate passes him the ball, and Shin, with a quick touch, moves it towards the center.
Two defenders run towards him, but Shin double-steps, leaving them confused. With a sudden acceleration, he enters the penalty area. Saint stands up as Shin charges for the shot. The opposing goalkeeper dives, but the ball goes past his glove and into the bottom corner of the net. It's a goal!
Saint and the entire crowd start cheering.
"I knew it!" Saint says with a smile, as if he had scored the goal.
Seeing a smile on Shin's lips as he and his teammates celebrate the goal makes Saint happy too.
After the goal, Shin's team closes in on defense, trying to maintain their lead. The opponents attempt a final assault, but time runs out. The final whistle seals the victory, and the crowd celebrates warmly.
Saint, Sung and Ken leave the sports field a few minutes later, greeting the organizers, who had invited Sung, with a handshake.
"Shin was really amazing in this game." Ken comments as they get back in the car and Saint gets behind the wheel.
"He always has been, and not just in soccer." he replies, smiling.
"Stop being so sappy, I'm getting chills." Ken replies, causing Sung to laugh.
In the meantime, Saint writes a message to Shin.
Saint: Congratulations on the game, I had no doubt that you would be amazing as always
At that point he starts the car and heads back to Sung's house. In the afternoon, when he has finished his shift and is on his way to a car showroom to buy a car, he receives a message and notices that Shin had put, for the first time, a reaction to his message, with the thumbs up emoji. Saint exits the chat and continues to look for the car that's right for him, ending the day with a smile plastered on his face...
