Chapter 23: Feelings ewwww

"Matt? Maybe you should try talking to him." Camilla school me out my reverie probably for the hundredth time that day.

"I don't want to." I replied, not ready to change my stand on anything.

How dare he send those spawns on Sam?

"Ok maybe I might have told you to keep your guard up against the devil all the time, but maybe just maybe, I don't know, he's kind of mellow now?"

"Mellow? You mean less evil than he is?" I scoffed, unbelievingly. When Cam had revealed what all he had to do for the contract to be signed... Literal nightmare fodder, which had made me triple my guard around the devil.

"Come on Matt! It makes sense. I mean he's not even asked you to kidnap or murder anyone! Not even steal from or dismember anyone! Like if that isn't suspicious, I don't know what is!" He sighed frustratedly.

"Wait what is so suspicious?"

"That he likes you?"

"What?" I almost dropped the gun on my feet, but caught it at the nick of time.

"He likes you. Like fancies you, hon." Her lips curled, devilishly.

"Yeah like hell he does." I shook my head.

"I have a strong feeling that he definitely likes you. Just as much as you like him, if not more." She shrugged and this time my gun did actual clatter to the ground.

"What!? No way in hell!" I rolled my eyes.

"Why not, Matt?"

"All he ever does is annoy me!" I groaned.

"Exactly! And what do you think little boys do when they like someone? Annoy them!"

"Seriously? Did you just compare the lord of the netherworlds to a freaking 'little boy'?"

"Hush Matt! Don't get to involved in the similes and metaphors. Why don't you realise that you both are walking on the little line between love and hate? Just shut up, get your head out of denial and man up and go tell him!"

I paused a few seconds after her words and then proceeded to hit the next five targets, all itching closer to the centre, making me feel a little less shittier about all the crap that was happening.

"Matt!" Sam called to me for probably the fifth time during our Friday lunch date.

"What?" I sighed.

"I didn't actually tell you this, but thank you." She smiled sadly.

"Hey you don't have to thank me for anything, it was my duty."

"But you still stepped up and saved me from those disturbing people." She shuddered and I frowned.

So now she thought of them as people?

"Thank god you pulled your phone out and called the police on time. Else I would have been one more bad statistic." She shook her head vehemently, and I patted her hand to tell her that it was all going to be alright.

Holy crap... was this how clueless us mortals are?

I shuddered when I thought about how negligent about everything, humanity is.

It made me almost thankful that I had been introduced into the actual shitty world, and got to know more.... if not for getting a contract signed, at least to be able to train to defend myself and my loved ones,
