Chapter 21: Distance makes the heart grow fonder

"A little more up." Camilla pushed my hands and corrected my aim before giving me the go signal.

I fired and it hit in the circle closest to the bull's eye and I couldn't help but grin.

"Well this is definitely an improvement than the time you blew up my pottery." She shrugged, clearly unimpressed.

"Hey! I think I have done a good job for someone who has trained regularly for only a month!"

"Oh honey... that pistol is set at the easy learning level and the target is kept just 3 metres away! I learnt to do that during my first week." She tsked, her maroon lipstick glinting a dangerous red tint under the yellow lighting.

"Camilla cut me some slack." I muttered, running my hand through my slightly sweaty hair.

"I know you are in a sad place now hon. And that's exactly why I am doing this." She flipped her hair and offered me a smirk.

"How's this helping?" I challenged, wanting to wipe that smug smirk from her face.

"Distraction." She shrugged.

"Yeah you got me there actually." I smiled softly when I realised she was right.

I closed my eyes and exhaled harshly, trying to throw out my chaotic thoughts along with the air in my lungs. Unsurprisingly, it didn't work.

I groaned when I remembered how smooth his styled hair looked or how at home he had seemed when he had sat on my couch munching on jellybeans, or how hot he looked in the suit or-

"Matt?" Camilla saves me from my train of thought.

"Yeah? Why don't we call it a day and watch a movie or something? I have Netflix." She shrugged but I could see that she looked worried for me.

"It's all right Camilla, let's continue." I put on a determined front, ready to shoot down those targets, picturing them to be his perfectly sculpted face.

From the DEVIL's eye!

"If you miss him, why don't you go talk to him?" Lila asked her scrutinising gaze trained in me.

"Because he's a schmuk in denial and I don't need none of that weak ass drama!"

"Hey hey! You thrive on drama! Especially when it concerns you!" She rolled her eyes.

"But this is different." I look away, not wanting to see her knowing look.

"Come on boss. You love the chase, you know you always win and most of your appointments with Lust have become boring and heck you even stopped sleeping with her ever since that time when you edged her to violate Matt!" Desdemona rambled.

"Your point?" I raised an eyebrow, really wanting to shut her up, but I loved her way too much to silence her.

"Maybe you like him!" She jumped, suddenly, her eyes shining.

"What? No way in hell." I glared at her, really wanting to send her back home to the fiery pits. And let her boil to a crisp in hot oil. Or be impaled by a poisoned sword again and again and again..... I closed my eyes, feeling much more relaxed.

"Oh come on! This is exactly how it was back then! And this was exactly what you did, ignore your feelings and let your anger get the better of you and boom! Black Death!" I opened my eyes to seeLila flailed her arms.

"Uhuh, you think that was anger?" My eyes were glowing their dark red when I trained my gaze on her, ready to send her to the serpent pit.

"Sadness too, I think?" She tilted her head like a lost puppy and I sighed, realising that it was Lila and I walked out of their suite, tired of their stupid antics trying to convince me of an impossibility.

Matt liked me. That was the truth.

I liking Matt back, on the other hand, is the farthest statement from the truth.

I mean look at his blue eyes and that floppy hair... so lost! And yet his illusion of being organised and his meticulous planning and how much effort he put into everything just made him the most endearing human I had met in a while.

He was like a cute kitten. That's all.

A mere mortal pet. Something that would die if kicked, and would purr when petted.

And yet I wonder... would he ever take to me at all? I know he won't even last past the next 4 decades and yet I wonder if I could keep an eye on him during that time... Maybe the girls had a point. Not that they were entirely right, but I definitely had a soft spot for that stupid peasant.

So that was my first POV change ever in this book, hope it didn't come off as too clunky or uncharacteristic of the character in question...

I must say, we are quite near the end. So sit tight and enjoy this short ride!

And expect an end by the end of this year...

Ironic isn't it?
