Chapter 11 - The Road to Recovery
Cris' POV
"Día and Rocco, stay right here, understand? I'll be right back with the doctor."
I whispered to Kamea, "I'll be right back." She nodded her head, saying okay.
"Yes, daddy." I left the room and went to the nurse's station.
They moved Tamia up to the same floor the private wing was on. I went over and asked her, "Can you have the doctor paged? Kamea just opened her eyes."
"She did?! I'll page the doctor right away."
I saw Marissa, her boyfriend, Andre, and Kamea's family coming off the elevator, so I told them she had opened her eyes.
"You are all in for a surprise. A few minutes ago, Kamea opened her eyes. I had the doctor paged."
"Oh, thank goodness! Let us go in to see her. Thank you, Cris." Mama Jayde said.
"You're welcome. You can send Día and Rocco out of the room."
"Oh, it's okay. The twins can stay. They are cutie pies."
"Thanks." I waited outside the room.
Jayde's POV
I was so glad to see my baby girl awake. Tears of joy streamed down my face. I went closer to her bed to talk to her. "Hi, sweetheart. Your dad and I are so glad that you are awake. We missed you these past few weeks."
She had a puzzled look on her face that I was not sure what it meant. Doctor Weekly entered the room and was glad to see that she was awake.
"Kamea, we are going to check your vitals and do a little memory test, okay? Nod for yes, and shake your head for no. We are going to check your vitals first."
She nodded her head yes.
After checking Kami's vitals, Doctor Weekly started asking her questions.
"Okay, Kamea, do you know where you are?" She shook her head slowly no.
"Okay. Do you remember what happened to you?" She shook her head slowly no.
"Mama, how about you ask her a few questions?"
"Sure." I walked over and asked her a few questions.
"Sweetheart, do you know who the kids are, sitting in the chair over to the left?" I pointed to Día and Rocco. She glanced over slowly, paused for a minute, then shook her head no.
Then, I asked her, "In the chair next to the twins, do you know who that is?" I pointed to Kalani. Once again, she paused for a minute, then shook her head no. The doctor was taking notes while I asked these questions.
"One more, sweetheart. Do you remember who I am?" She paused for a minute, but she shook her head no. It made me sad that she could not remember.
"Just as I feared. How about we bring in the young man I saw standing outside."
I walked out of the room and asked Cris to come.
We both walked closer to her bed, and I asked her the same question. "Kami baby, does Cris look familiar to you?" She paused and thought long and hard. I hoped she would say yes, but she shook her head no. I looked at Cris and could tell he was just as heartbroken as we were.
"Because of the head trauma she suffered, Kamea has amnesia. Treatment for amnesia focuses on techniques and strategies to help make up for the memory problem and address any underlying diseases causing the amnesia. Talk with her about events in her childhood. Show her pictures of family and places she has been to. And, with Kamea having Diabetes and Asthma, she will need reminders to take her insulin and to use her inhaler. Now, you are her boyfriend, correct?"
Cris shook his head yes. Well, technically, he is not yet, but he will be. I am sure of it.
"Remind Kamea of how you first met and the occasion when you asked her to be your girlfriend. Do all you can to bring her memory back. Just do not push her to remember. I will be back later to see how she is feeling. Kamea, honey, are you in any pain?"
She slowly raised her hand and touched her head. So, Doctor Weekly went to get her some pain medication, and she would be right back.
My poor baby lost her memory because of that devil, Reed. "Cris, make sure you find Reed and hold him accountable for hurting my child."
"Trust me when I say that he will pay dearly."
"Kami, sweetheart, your dad and I are going to leave so you can get some rest. We will come back and check on you tomorrow."
"Cris, would you like us to take your kids to their grandma's house?"
"Sure. I will get Dia and Rocco's booster seats from my truck. Come on, kids. Say goodnight."
"Good night, Ms. Kam," they said in unison and waved at her. Kami slowly lifted her hand and waved goodbye.
Cris' POV
I followed right behind everyone, so I could get the twins' seats and call my parents to tell them that Día and Rocco were on their way. I kissed them and waved goodbye as they pulled off. Then, I went back into the hospital up to the private wing.
By the time I had gotten back to the room, Tamia was in there talking to her.
"Hey Cris, I just came in to see how Kam was doing. I will see you later."
Tamia walked out of the room. Kamea looked like she was in and out of falling asleep. I just stood there and watched her drift off to sleep. Then, I sat in the chair and fell asleep.
*********
The next morning, she was still asleep, so I went to the cafeteria for breakfast. I adjusted my diet to what was suitable for someone with Diabetes. So, I had a bowl of fresh fruit and oatmeal. And to drink a cup of coffee - black. On the last trip home, I grabbed my laptop so that I could check emails for the winery as well as the club. Everything was running smoothly. I called my secretary to tell her I would be at the winery on Monday.
After I finished breakfast, I went back up to the private wing. I asked my security team if anyone had tried anything. They said no one so far. That was great news. I peeked into Kamea's room and saw her parents.
"Oh, hey, Cris. It is okay to come in. We brought some picture books in for Kami to look at. We are hoping it triggers her memory."
Kamea's father showed her some pictures, but she could not remember anyone. Mama Jayde showed me some of the family pictures she had. I noticed one picture that showed Kamea, Noelani, and her parents. I also saw a young boy in the picture.
"That must be her son. Should I ask about him?"
"Mama Jayde, is that boy in that picture your son you were talking about the other day?"
She gave me a look of sadness. "Oh boy, Cris, why did you do that?"
"Sorry for asking."
"Cris, it is ok. And, yes, that is our son. His name was Kekoa. He would have been 26 years old. He was 12 at the time that he died. Kekoa was outside playing basketball with his friends. The schools thought it would be different to play the game outdoors instead."
Jayde -"'Hey, Kekoa, pass me the ball, man!' One of his friends yelled. So, he passed him the ball, and his team scored. My baby boy was the star player on his school's team. It went back and forth. His team lead and then the other team lead. It was 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. He could not make the shot, so he passed the ball to one of his teammates.”
Jayde -"'Kekoa, I got this.' His friend shot the ball in the air while the clock was ticking down to end the 4th quarter. The shot would have sent the game into overtime. The ball, unfortunately, sailed over the net and out into the street. So, Kekoa ran out into the street to grab the ball. Suddenly, everyone saw a car speeding fast down the street."
Jayde -"I yelled to him, 'Kekoa, watch out!!' He turned around and saw the car, but it was too late for him to get out of the way. We all watched in horror as my baby was struck by the car. And then, the car did not stop. It sped off and left my son in the middle of the street. We all ran over to where he was lying. My husband called the ambulance."
Jayde - "'Kekoa! Kekoa! Baby, please wake up! Wake up for mommy and daddy! He did not respond. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedic checked to see if my baby had a pulse, but he did not. They placed him in the ambulance and continued to look for his pulse on the way to the hospital. He was rushed inside the emergency room. My husband and I waited in the waiting room for what was hours. But it was only about 30 minutes. The doctor came out to us and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Palu, I am sorry to tell you that your son has died from his injuries."
My heart broke after she said that.
"And then, later, we found out that the driver was drunk. He was drunk during the day, Cris! Burying my son was the hardest thing to do," Mama Jayde said as she broke down and started crying. I hugged her just like I would hug my mom and just let her cry on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry for bringing up those feelings, Mama Jayde."
"It's okay, Cris. You did not know. Once we get Kamea back from her amnesia, you are going to be family one day. I do not tell everyone the whole story because it hurts so much. I can tell Kami really likes you, so that is why I told you."
Suddenly, we felt the bed moving. We all turned around, and it was Kamea trying to get up. Her mother approached her. "What's wrong?"
Kamea started rubbing her arm, then her head. She started crying, so I pressed the red button for a nurse to come in. Mama Jayde then asked, "You remember what happened to you?"
Kamea nodded her head to say yes.
"Take your time, and I want you to nod when I give you this name. The name is Reed."
Kamea started panicking and nodded her head to say yes. The nurse came in just in time. "I think she is in pain. She started rubbing her arm and her head."
"Okay. I'll be right back." Within 5 minutes, the nurse came back with a drip bag to attach to the IV.
"It's okay, sweetheart. Cris is going to make sure Reed pays for what he did. He will never hurt you again. Do you remember anyone in the room - your dad, me, or Cris?"
She shook her head to say no.
"Okay, sweetheart. Look at this picture for me. Do you know who that is?"
She showed Kamea a picture of her brother. She paused for a moment before answering.
Kamea instantly knew it was her brother because the tears were flowing.
"It looks like she is remembering sad events that happened to her."
Doctor Weekly came into the room, and Mama Jayde told her what just happened. "Even though those two things are sad occasions, it is a start. Kamea, I am going to check your vitals. And we are going to wheel you up to get an MRI scan to check the swelling in your brain."
"We will see how you progress through the next week. If everything goes well, we will take the breathing tube out so that you can breathe on your own. Your parents approved the nurse that will take you up. The scan will take about 30 to 60 minutes," Doctor Weekly said.
The nurse came into the room to take Kamea up to get her scan. Before the nurse wheeled her out of the room, Kamea grabbed my hand, kissed it, then winked.
Mama Jayde started chuckling. "Looks like Kami has the hots for you, Mr. Fiore."
