Melodies of Memories

Peter Parker was talented at many things. He was incredibly gifted when it came to maths and science, and he has even managed to shock Tony with random snippets of stories that he's written on design ideas. He could cook, knew basic sewing and could fix any electronic device thrown at him.
He was also rather musical. He enjoyed singing quietly in his bedroom when no one was home and could play a solid rock rhythm on the drum kit.
But his favourite was the piano.
Peter's earliest memories consisted of him sitting next to his dad as his father played on the old upright piano they used to own. The music would be bright and jazzy, calming and gentle, or very rarely, sad and wishful. Sometimes it would be strong and heavy before switching to a softer, brighter tone.
Some days Peter's mother would join in, her soft voice floating on the melody.
Peter missed those days. He often longed to remember the feel of the keys under his fingers.
Uncle Ben had taught him on their keyboard, but they had to sell it when he passed.
No one knew Peter could play. It was his little secret.

"Peter! Grab the popcorn for me!" Clint called from his beanbag, wrestling with Sam for the remote. It was a Friday night at the compound, and that meant movie night. Peter returned to the couch, balancing bowls of popcorn on his arms. "Here we go."
Clint dived for the popcorn before Sam could stop him, sending popcorn everywhere.
"Clint! The popcorn!"
"Everybody SHUSH!"
Tony started the movie. The opening for The Princess Bride covered the screen as everyone settled down for the next few hours.

Eventually Peter needed to go to the bathroom. He gently moved Sam's legs from off his lap and tiptoed out to the elevator.
Where would you like to go, Peter?
"The bathroom please, FRIDAY."
He stepped off the elevator to the floor above. He thought it would be the bedroom floor, which is where he normally went, but FRIDAY had taken him to what looked like a lobby. Couches dotted the space neatly, accompanied by coffee tables. An entire wall was glass, revealing flickering lights from the city below. Moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating the room and,
A beautiful grand piano.
The ebony lid glisted in the moonlight, inviting Peter to the leather bench.
He looked back at the elevator. No one would know.
The teen sat down tentatively on the stool and lifted up the heavy lid. The white keys glowed in the moonlight.
Peter couldn't help himself. He rested his hands gently on the keys, coaxing memories back from the depth of his mind.
Then he gently began.
It started with 'Silent Night' because that was all he could remember, but as he progressed, he began to remember other songs that his mother used to sing.
He played for well over an hour.
The young maestro jumped as his phone vibrated in his pocket.
Oh crap. I've spent far too long.
He rushed upstairs, his brain in a flurry of panic. What would he say?
Oh yeah sorry about that, just thought I'd play some piano cause I saw it sitting there and recalled my depressing childhood. Laugh at me all you want.
Nope, no way was he going to mention it.
To Peter's immense relief, everyone had fallen asleep, either sprawled on the couch or having headed to bed.
He sighed with relief. His secret was safe for another day.

Ever since that night, Peter had gone back to play piano. He would only play on Friday movie nights when everyone was asleep, but it soon became a way for him to destress and unwind. He went to music stores and found music from movies and classical composers. He snuck away every time he visited the avengers.
He even played at school when he was anxious or tense.
He would hide out in the music room at lunch, letting himself drift away with the music.
He thought no one knew.
MJ had been on her way to the library  when she spotted Peter walking suspiciously in the other direction. He had told Ned that he was looking for a new textbook to read for the weekend, but clearly he wasn't.
MJ followed as her friend snuck down a quiet corridor and slipped into a room.
What the heck us he doing in the music room?
The only people who went there were the kids who dedicated their life to music and spent their time practicing for what seemed like 40 hours a day.
MJ had never seen Peter play an instrument.
She poked her head in the window careful not to draw attention. Sitting at the old piano was the curly haired boy, playing away to his heart's content.
MJ smiled. Peter had a broad personality, ranging from the bouncy energetic ball he was when he was with his friends, the shy nerd at school, the cocky vigilante or the big brother when he was with younger kids. She had never really seen this soft, quiet part of him, oblivious to the world around him.
It made her heart feel all fuzzy.

The only other person who knew was Pepper.
She had been noticing Peter's regular disappearances and had been keeping tabs on it for quite a while. She didn't want anything happening to her baby spider. She had taken upon herself the role of a mother for him, not that he had fully realised yet.
So when Peter had vanished for an hour one day, she went all mother on him. She left the penthouse and into the elevator, instructing l FRIDAY to take her wherever Peter was.
She wasn't expecting to open out to the teen playing 'Lavenders Blue' on the piano.
She loved to sing this one to Morga when she got her to bed. It was a gentle song, one that calmed her and made her feel at peace.
She stayed by the elevator, quietly singing along.

Peter didn't notice the elevator open, or an CEO walk out. He was in his own world,a world.of memories and melodies.
His mother had sung this lullaby to him when he went to bed. It would call him down after long days of excitement and comforted him when he was upset.
No one had been there to sing it when his parents died.
He hadn't found anyone who filled that spot.
At least, he didn't think so.
He let the music pour from the strings, wamrapping himself in the time and the memories. It was a peaceful feeling, almost bittersweet.
"Lavenders blue dilly dilly Lavenders green
If you are king dilly dilly I'll be your queen."
"Lavenders green dilly dilly Lavenders blue
If you love me dilly dilly I will love you."
Peter stopped abruptly. He had been singing along quietly, but there was someone else.
Some one, some one who reminded him of... no.
He turned around tho the sound if the singing. Pepper was standing quietly next to the doors, almost shyly.
"S-Sorry Mrs Stark. I just sa-"
"Peter, it's ok. I'm not mad at you." She smiled warmly before joining him. "Do you like that lullaby?"
Peter looked at his hands in embarrassment. "Yeah, I do. My mum used to sing it to me before I went to bed. It always sent me to sleep."
Pepper noticed his fidgety actions.
"Do you miss them?"
"Yeah."
Peter stared down at his hands, willing the tears to stay back.
He wasn't expecting arms to wrap around him gently, pulling him into Pepper's chest. The tears couldn't stop, flowing down his cheeks and onto the woman's shirt. A sob burst from his throat and he couldn't stop it.
Pepper didn't feel awkward or I'm sure of what to do. She wrapped her arm firmly but gently around his small back and ran the other hand through his curls, comforting the child in her arms.
It was a step.
A small one,but a step nonetheless.
Every time Peter went downstairs, Pepper noticed. Sometimes she'd join him, playing duets and singing loudly and laughing. Other times she let him go on his own, knowing that sometimes one just needed a way to escape. She always gave him a hug when he came back.

Tony was in the lab, tinkering with some project or other. He looked up as his beautiful wife walked down the stairs and through the doors. "Hi honey."
"Hi beautiful." He responded, giving her a soft kiss before noticing the stack of paper in her arms. "Don't tell me I have more paperwork to do because I'm not doing it."
"No," Pepper smiled as her husband turned back to his project. "We're having a child."
Tony dropped his tools and and whirled to face her. "Wh-what? You're pregnant?"
"No." She managed to keep a straight face while laughing internally at Tony's confusion. "We're adopting one."
She placed the papers down on the bench. Tony looked at her warily before looking at the paper. He smiled, eyes brimming with excitement. "Does he know?"
Pepper shook her head, smiling. "Let's start, shall we?"
"We shall."

It was Peter's birthday. He stretched as the smell of chocolate chip pancakes reached his nose. Aunt May was the best.
May smiled at Peter, her eyes shining with excitement. "Morning, Sleepyhead. You excited?"
Peter nodded his head. He was going to the compound later today. For his birthday party with the Avengers. "It's gonna be lit." He said, pancake filling his mouth. May smiled. She knew what was coming.

"Open mine first!"
"No, do mine!"
Peter shushed them all and sat down on the couch. "Someone get me the presents and I'll unwrap them, but I won't if you keep on squaking like birds.
Clint gave Sam a knowing look.
Peter unwrapped all of the presents. He had science shirts, Lego sets, a maths book with tricky equations, a textbook by Banner himself and even a Spider-Man plushie.
"Thank you so much guys! This is amazing!"
"You're not finished yet."
Peter watched in shock as Steve and Bucky wheeled in a piano-shaped gift.
"No. Way. Nuh uh. This can't be real." Peter pulled the paper off the shiny black piano, running his hands across the lid. "Pepper! You didn't have to! I-I don't know where I'm going to put it! Or get it home for that matter."
Tony walked over with a smaller rectangle gift in his hand. "Thats alright. We have our ways." He handed Peter the gift.
He unwrapped it slowly, wary of what might be inside. It was a picture frame. He flipped it over to see the picture.
It was a certificate.
For adoption.
For him.
By Pepper and Tony.
Peter opened his mouth like a fish. He couldn't say anything. His hand went to his mouth, tears threatening to spillnover the edge.
"Re-really?" He looked at May.
May nodded. "Really. I'll come and visit on weekends and holidays. You'll enjoy it here."
The tears spilled over and down his face. He bolted to his new parents, pulling them into a tight hug, whisoering thank yous repeatedly. May joined in, inviting everyone else to join the huddle.

Peter got weekly piano lessons and all of the piano books he want. He even created a little theme song for himself.
Pepper came into his room every time he had a nightmare. She would sing him lullabies quietly till he went to sleep, running her fingers through his soft hair.
Sometimes she fell asleep with him.

Flash made the mistake of commenting on Peter's late parents. Peter smiled before responding that his parents were indeed alive.
Flash was confused as was the rest of the school. No one knew Peter was a Stark. Only those closest to him did.

He lived his family. Both of them.
And he wouldn't change it for the world.
