Kings and Queens
I have been playing chess with my dad lately so I decided to do a oneshot about chess cause what the heck
Peter opened the door cautiously. He had never been to chess club and was honestly nervous at messing up big-time, but Uncle Ben had taught him when he was younger, so Peter decided to give it a shot.
"Peter! What are you doing here?"
A kid from Peter's class asked, turning everyone's attention to the teen hiding in the doorway.
"I just... I just wanted t-to play some chess?"
The kids exchanged glances. "You ever played chess before?"
"Um, yeah." Peter swallowed. "My... my uncle taught me when I was younger."
"Who's gonna play him?"
"I will." A girl at the back of the room stood up. Her narrow blue glasses framed her ice-blue eyes.
"Ooooh, Parker gets to play Rose!"
"He's gonna lose!"
"She's crazy good."
Peter ignored the comments flying around the room. "Sure."
She smiled. "Have a seat."
Peter sat down nervously.
"Black or white?"
"I don't mind."
"White it is."
She set out the board and gestured for Peter to start.
The game went for a little while, each opponent jumping pieces around the board. Peter noticed how she liked to make patterns.
He surprised her by taking a bishop she had left unguarded.
She retaliated by taking a pawn.
Not the best move, but still.
After a few more moves, Peter saw an opening for a double kill. He moved his bishop to close in around her king.
He got too cocky.
She twirled a tiny strand of her chestnut hair at the nape of her neck, contemplating her next move.
She smiled and moved her queen down the other end of the board.
"Checkmate."
Peter stared, mouth open as she laughed.
"You got me." He held out his hand. "Good game. I haven't played for a while."
She looked surprised. "You did exceptionally well. My name is Evelyn, but all my friends call me Evie, that is, if I had any friends."
Peter looked at her suspiciously. "Is that a reference to Hercules I smell?"
"Correct. You pass with flying colours."
Peter smiled. He liked the quirky, smart girl. "Who taught you?"
She looked at her hands. "My dad taught me before he left. I sort of kept it up to remind me of what it was like when he was still here."
"I haven't played chess since my uncle died several months ago."
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine."
"Wanna play again?"
Peter grinned. "Only if you sit with my friends at lunch tomorrow."
Evie held out her hand. "Deal. Though don't blame me if I start writing."
Peter cocked his head.
"I want to be an author when I grow up."
"You'll have to write about people playing chess!"
They laughed and started the game.
True to her word, Evie sat with Peter, Ned and MJ. She and MJ became friends instantly, discussing books and how dorky the boys were.
It's funny how a simple game can bring people together...
Welp, that was bad.
Woooooooooo
Basically that is the way I beat my dad in chess.
That is the only time I've won
Though I beat my grandpa by taking his queen, and then he gave up.
Send requests per favore as ya girl is lost for ideas.
And I am publishing YET ANOTHER book because my brain.
Love yalls
-Evie
