Peter opened his eyes as he felt the buzzing on his wrist. He tapped his watchbto turn off the alarm and grabbed his hearing aids.

Peter was born with 20% hearing in total, so he wore hearing aids everywhere. Without them the world sounded... well, blurry. Nothing was clear, if he could hear it at all.

None of the Avengers new this. Peter seemed to function normally, and no one even thought that it was a possibility that he could be. Only May and Ned knew, and probably the teachers. Peter didn't want the other avengers to know, just in case they told him that he couldn't be Spider-Man. Some of them were reluctant to let him go out as a teenager, but if they found out he was deaf?

So it was Peter's secret.

"Morning May," Peter mumbled as he turned up the volume on his hearing aids.

"Morning, sleepy head. How was your sleep?" May was in the kitchen, making the usual toast with butter.

"Good." Peter sat down at the counter and began to eat.

"Remeber you have that hearing test next week, ok? I think you're getting new hearing aids."

Peter smiled and finished his breakfast before hurrying to get ready. He double-checked that he had hearing aid batteries: the last time he forgot, one went flat and he nearly had a meltdown at how hard it was to focus on one sound.

The teen slipped on his shoes, brushed his teeth and headed out the door. "Larb you, May!"

"Larb you too!"

He changed the mode on his hearing aids to the T-coil setting and put on the special headphones and walked to the subway. The headphones were little hooks that sat between his head and his hearing aids.

Peter found it quite funny when his phone told him that listening at a high volume could damage his ears.

Not mine.

The kid hopped off the train and made his way into the school, bracing himself for another boring day.

Peter dashed into the alleyway and put on his suit, excited for patrol that afternoon.

"Hey Karen, how are you?"

Good thank you, Peter.

The teen smiled and webbed his bag to the wall, swinging away into the blue yonder. The wind whistled pasted him as he hollered, running across rooftops and swinging so low that he nearly touched the cars.

Patrol was quiet that day. The hero only had to stop one mugging, helped an old Dominican lady and stopped someone from stealing a car that happened to be their car. Peter sat on the edge of a railing, nibbling on the warm churro. The sun was setting, painting streaks of blush and gold clouds across the horizon. Lights flickered on below him, illuminating the darkening streets.

Peter heard a soft yelp.

Finally, something good.

He flung himself off the roof and glided towards the sound. He landed behind the muggers as they threatened a teenage couple who were headed on a date.

"Hey! I don't think they wanted you as third wheels on their date! Maybe you should learn some respect."

The muggers whirled around as Spider-Man pulled the guns out of their hands. They instantly lunged towards him, throwing punches and kicks.

Peter dodged and whirled, adding in the occasional kick to the stomach or web to the face. One of the men swung his arm to club the vigilante, but peter dodged, sending himself flying into the punch of the second mugger.

Peter smacked against the wall and heard a sickening cracking as one ear went deaf.

Nooooooo not the hearing aid!

He launched himself at the two  cornering them and shooting web grenades rapidly, leaving the ebemy wrapped in web cocoons.

"That wasn't so hard. Learn next time."

The arachnid swung away to the top of a building and pulled off his mask.

Oh nooooooo.

His hearing aid was a tangle of wire and crushed plastic. The receiver and amplifier weren't bad since they had been in his actual ear, but the rest of it was hopeless.

And he was supposed to be visiting Mr Stark now.

What do I do? I won't be able to hear him clearly because my ears won't be focusing on speech. I don't want to talk, just in case I talk too loud. Nat will definately think that something is up.

He got to his feet dejectedly and pulling on his mask, he swung to the tower.

"Hey Peter!" Tony smiled as Peter pulled off his mask and climbed through the window.

"Hey Mr Stark," Peter nearly whispered.

"You ok buddy? You seem a little quiet."

"Yeah yeah, I'm fine, just a little tired." Peter swallowed, trying to hear Tony clearly. Luckily Tony had a loud voice.

"Ok, go get changed and come join us for movie night."

Peter nodded and shut his door. He placed the dead hearing aid on the desk and moved to the bathroom to get changed.

Clint was bored.

Like, so bored.

The kind of bored where you were willing to do something that would generally bore you.

That bored.

So bored that he couldn't even find joy in climbing in the vents. No one was doing anything interesting, but no one could do anything.

His hearing aid whistled slightly. "Yeah ok, shut up or else I'll take you out again!" Clint mumbled as he crawled along the vents.

"Hey Peter!" He heard Tony called.

PETER'S HERE!

Finally, someone who would play Mario Kart with him!

Clint knew Peter would go to his bedroom next, so he moved to the grate above the bed, hoping to jump out and surprise him.

Something stopped him though. Peter seemed really jittery and was looking around a lot. Clint watched as the boy pulled something out of his pocket, stared at it dejectedly before putting it on his desk. He waited till Peter was in the bathroom before he slipped out and moved to the desk.

"What the..."

It was definately a hearing aid. It was also incredibly broken.

Peter has hearing aids? I wonder if he can sign. How deaf is he? Why didn't he tell me?

Clint frowned. Not many avengers knew about Hawkeye's disability. Only Nat, Tony and Bruce did.

Maybe it was time he told Peter.

Clint snatched the hearing aid off the desk, scribbled a note and ran out to Tony.

"TONYYYYYYYYYY!"

Tony sighed and put his mug down. "Did you break one again?"

Barton looked around sheepishly. "Maybe? Can you please fix it? I want to be able to hear the movie properly, and no one else likes it when the subtitles are on."

Tony rolled his eyes. "Fine. It won't be fixed before then, but I'll put the subtitles on."

"Thank you!" Clint grinned as he grabbed a stray popart off Tony's plate and vanished into the vents to watch Tony do his magic.

Peter walked out of the bathroom, scratching his ear. It felt really weird to have the air rushing in and out if it. He went to grab the broken device of his desk and started.

Where did it go?

He hunted everywhere. The floor, the desk, under the bed, his laundry, the bathroom.

Maybe if he had looked at the paper the first time he could have prevented all the stress.

Not that the not relieved any of it.

Hey Pete, I saw the broken hearing aid. Don't stress, I'll get it fixed.

"Who wrote this?" Peter sighed and stuffed it in his pocket.

He walked out to the living room and joined the others. Everyone was talking and it was too loud but too quiet at the same time. Peter just stayed quiet.

Nat noticed Clint watching Peter closely. Peter had been quiet all night, not joining in any conversation.

"Is Peter ok?" She whispered.

Clint paused. "I found a broken hearing aid on his desk, so I asked Tony to fix it. I think it might be his."

"Have you told him about you?"

"No, I'm going to though." Clint stood up. "In going to go make popcorn. You wanna join me Pete?"

Peter nodded and followed Hawkeye to the kitchen.

"Hey Pete," Clint put a bowl on the bench top. "I found the hearing aid on your desk."

Peter jumped. "Oh, it's not mine, I found it and thought about fixing it..."

peter im deaf too

Peter stared in shock at what Hawkeye had signed.

you are

Clint nodded.

i became deaf round about your age  actually    were you born with yours

yup I only have 20% hearing so i got hearing aids    im lucky though cause my mum found out about eight weeks after i was born    So ive always had hearing aids
(This is what happened to me so)

Clint smiled. dont worry i got tony to fix it    i told him it was mine

Peter nodded. thanks

no problem

"Clint! I fixed it!" An exasperated Stark walked into the kitchen, holding the small beige hearing aid in his hand. "How many times do I have to tell you to put tape on!?"

Clint chuckled and handed the hearing aid to Peter, who put it in without a fuss.

"Wh... what?" Tony blinked.

Peter looked down at his hands. "Um, Mr Stark? I'm actually... well, deaf."

Tony gaped. "Pete, that's, thats... that's amazing! I never would have guessed!"

Peter looked up with shock. "You... you don't think I'm stupid?"

Tony shook his head. "Kid, you are the smartest person I know. And you're deaf! That's amazing!"

Peter smiled. "Thank you Mr Stark." He looked at the doorway. "Should I tell the others?"

"Only if you're comfortable."

Peter nodded.

"Hey Peter!"

"Ned!" Peter ran down the corridor and did his handshake with his best friend. "I got new hearing aids yesterday."

"Sick!" Ned looked at Peter's ear. "You got blur and red ones?"

Peter nodded. "Hawkeye changed his to black and purple."

"Hawkeye has hearing aids? You guys are like, buddies!:

Peter nodded. "Um... I'm thinking of telling people the I'm deaf. I think the teachers probably know, but I think I'm ready to tell the world."

Ned smiled. "Go for it."

"Sup losers." MJ walked over to the pair. "What's happening?"

"I got new hearing aids."

MJ nearly dropped her book. "You're deaf!?"

Peter shrugged. "Apparently."

"Dude... do you sleep well at night?"

"Like a dream."

Everyone laughed.

"Hey Puny Parker! Are you feeling better today? Apparently you were away yesterday. Did you get the sniffles?" Flash pouted and added a babyish tone to his voice.

Peter smirked. "I'm sorry, what did you say? I got new hearing aids yesterday so I couldn't quite catch that." He pushed his hair back to reveal the blue and red device.

Flash was silent. He knew he couldn't say anything, cause Peter would pretend not to hear. But what if he couldn't genuinely hear him.
He huffed and stalked off, leaving Peter to earn high-fives from his friends.

This was a great day.
