【SEASON 6 EPISODE 8: PART ONE】
Despite Johnny wanting to keep him and Miguel's departure discreet until morning, the whole team knew within the hour. Jules didn't tell anyone after her dad stopped by but when Miguel said goodbye to Sam, Devon was in the room and texted everyone in the groupchat.
Hawk was back at Julianna's door minutes after he got Devon's text.
The two of them laid in Julianna's bed, Jules curled into Eli's side while Eli ran his hand through her hair in hopes to ease her. He looked back and forth between her and the movie playing on the television every now and then. "If you want anything, just let me know. Okay, Sunshine? Anything."
Jules sighed, moving to lay even closer to Eli, which was pretty much impossible. "I just wish I could get my mind off of it just for like... a couple hours, you know?" She whispered and even though she couldn't see him since her head was on his chest, Eli nodded.
He thought back to just minutes ago when he was making his way up to the room to check on Julianna. He ran into Chozen in the lobby and Chozen said he was going to buy some food before heading back to his hotel room which meant Chozen should be coming up in the elevator any minute now.
"I have an idea." Hawk said, moving himself out of Julianna's grip. Jules groaned when Hawks body disappeared out from under her and she hit the mattress.
She watched as he ran out of the hotel room and shut the door behind him. Julianna could hear him talking to somebody maybe a couple feet away from their room, but Jules couldn't make out the words.
After about a minute, Hawk came back into the hotel room, a big smile on his face as he ran towards the bed. "Come on. Get dressed." He said and Jules squinted, barely lifting her head off the pillow.
"What?" She asked and Hawk sat down by her waist, looking down at Julianna on the bed. He moved a piece of hair out of her face and gave her a small smile. "Miyagi-Do is gonna get their minds off of tonight. We're going to the bar."
...
It turns out, almost every other team at the Sekai Taikai had the same plan as the Miyagi-Do's. Luckily, Lexi ran to an open table, body slamming a couple people in the process, but it was worth it.
She, Demetri, Devon, Jules, and Eli sat in a semi-circle booth, Robby and Sam deciding to sit at the bar instead.
"What are we gonna do now that Sensei Lawrence and Miguel are gone?" Devon asked, taking a long sip of her virgin coke while everyone else had something alcoholic.
Jules didn't looked up from her dirty shirley temple, dipping the cherry in and out of her drink. "My dad said they're gonna fly in Kenny." She answered, making all eyes turn to her.
Demetri scoffed, bringing his drink to his lips. "Yeah, cause the kid that shit his pants is totally gonna save the day." He mocked.
From beside him, Lexi stared at her boyfriend with an unamused expression. As he brought his drink to his lips again, Lexi grabbed it from his hand just before the glass could touch his lips and moved it to the opposite end of the table where he couldn't reach it.
"No more for you." She muttered.
Jules finally bit into the cherry from her drink when her phone started to ring. She looked to see who was calling her and gasped, almost choking on the cherry.
Eli put his hand on her back and gently rubbed circles against it as she coughed. "What?" He asked and Jules looked up to him, tilting her phone so he could see the screen.
"It's Rosa. I have to take this." She muttered, not thinking about anything else expect answering the phone.
Hawk didn't waste a second to move out of the booth to let Jules out and Lexi, who was sitting across from him, got out after her.
Jules grabbed Lexi's hand as soon as they were both out of the booth and they quickly ran outside the bar as Julianna answered the call.
"Hey, Rosa?" She asked, she and Lexi sitting down against the curb.
"Hola, sweetheart. How's Barcelona?" Rosa asked and Jules felt some of the panic coursing through her ease at just the sound of the woman's voice.
She smiled, her shoulders relaxing as she nodded her head even though the woman couldn't see her. "It's going well. We had the night off so we all decided to go out." Jules said and she heard Rosa chuckle on the other end of the call.
"Ahhh. Having fun with your boyfriend?" Rosa taunted and even though Julianna couldn't see her, she could hear the smirk on Rosa's face. She could even picture the woman shimmying her shoulders playfully.
Jules laughed, her head dropping a little. "Yes." She giggled out before she licked her lips. "How's Carmen?"
"The doctor is doing an emergency cerclage. Miguel and Johnny are flying home now so I can't tell them. But she will be okay and so is the baby." Rosa explained and Jules felt like she could breath again.
Her exhale looked like smoke in the air. "Oh, that's amazing." She breathed out. Jules turned to Lexi beside her, who hadn't taken her eyes off of Julianna.
Jules gave Lexi a thumbs up and mouthed "She's okay." Lexi let out her own breath of relief, her head resting on Julianna's as the air left her lips.
"Good luck, princesa." Rosa said and Jules smiled, wishing Rosa and Carmen were able to come to Barcelona to see the Sekai Taikai. Not just for herself, but for Miguel too.
"Thank you." Jules muttered back happily and when Rosa hung up, Julianna opened Safari.
"What are you doing?" Lexi asked, squinting as she watched
the tip of Julianna's tongue poke out of her mouth as she typed.
"Looking up what a fucking cerclage is." Jules muttered, wanting to know exactly what happened to Carmen.
Lexi almost instantly nodded, her mouth making a small "o" shape. "It's where they stitch her cervix close to prevent preterm birth." She answered and Jules fingers stopped typing.
She turned to face Lexi and shook her head, turning off her phone and pushing it back into her pocket. "I have never been more grateful that you watch Grey's Anatomy." Jules admitted and Lexi snickered, shrugging innocently.
"Yeah, well, someone in our friend group has to." Lexi joked, the two of them standing back up to walk inside.
Jules brushed dirt off her pants and once she got majority of sand off, she looked back to Lexi. "I need to go back inside and tell Robby." She said and Lexi's eyes widened. She quickly nodded her head, leading Jules back inside.
"I'll let you guys be." Lexi muttered, walking back toward Eli, Demetri, and Devon.
Jules looked around the room until her eyes landed on Robby at the bar, dipping his straw in and out of his drink just like Jules had been doing with her cherry. She made a beeline towards her twin, taking the seat that Sam was sitting in earlier in the night.
"I just got off the phone with Rosa." Jules breathed out, groaning as she pushed herself onto the high barstool.
Robby turned to Julianna, his eyes widening and his hand finally letting go of the straw. "Really? How— How's Carmen doing?"
Jules rested her elbow on the table and placed her head in her hand, turning to face the boy. "She's in surgery right now but she and the baby are okay." Jules explained quickly and Robby let out a breath of relief, dropping his head. "Okay. That's good." He muttered and even though he wasn't facing her, Julianna could smell the alcohol in his breath.
Her eyebrows creased together and she gently rubbed his shoulder. "You okay?" She asked and Robby kept his head down but nodded anyway. "I've just been so in my head about Tory." He rubbed his head, his eyes glancing to Tory and Kwon sitting on the opposite end of the bar. "She... doesn't even seem phased that we took a pause." He muttered.
Julianna's frown slumped sideways and her head tilted. "Well, it could be bothering her, she's just hiding it better." She tried to come up with an excuse. It must've been working because Robby finally turned to face her.
"When Hawk and I broke up, he hid how upset he was a lot better than I did." Jules said, remembering how easily her emotions swayed after her and Hawk broke up.
Robby raised his eyebrows, bringing his glass to his lips. "So you're saying it's a family trait?" He asked and Jules chuckled as he took a step of his drink. Robby had to hold back laughing with her.
"Whatever helps you sleep at night." Jules muttered as her laughter started to die down.
She watched as Robby's frown started to settle back on his face. Julianna squinted. She's been seeing him frown a lot.
She bumped her shoulder into his, making him turn back to her. "If you need anything, you do know I'm here, right?" Jules asked, her voice quieter.
Robby stared at Jules, his eyes softening and his shoulders deflating as if that was exactly he needed to hear. He blinked and he quickly looked back at his drink as he nodded. "Yeah, I know." Robby muttered, his voice breaking.
Julianna's frown deepened. She hated that he was isolating himself from the rest of the team. "How about you come and sit with all of us at the table?" Jules asked and Robby looked back to the table Jules had been sitting at the rest of the team.
He scoffed out a laugh when he saw only one person left at the table. "All of us? It's just Hawk." Robby said, turning back to Jules just as she looked back at her table.
"What?" Jules muttered under her breath, watching as Hawk twirled his drinks umbrella around in his mouth out of boredom, everyone else gone from the table.
Then, Jules watched the female captain of Furia de Pantera, Maria start to make her way towards Hawk, the boy having no clue of the girl coming towards him.
"Oh, what is she doing?" Jules muttered, hopping off the bar stool to walk back towards her table. Robby straightened up at his sister's abrupt leaving. "Oh... Bye." He said under his breath.
"You want to dance?" Maria asked, resting her arm right beside Hawk.
Eli didn't notice Jules, his eyes on Maria as he almost instantly shook his head. "I'm not interested." He said and Jules crossed her arms from behind Maria, waiting for the girl to leave.
But Maria didn't. Instead, she tilted her head. "What? You've got a girlfriend?" She asked, her voice almost taunting Hawks rejection.
Julianna wanted to scoff. She held her arms tighter to her chest and raised her eyebrows. "Right behind you, actually." She answered, making Maria and Hawk turn to her.
Maria's face dropped and Eli watched his girlfriend with wide eyes.
Jules walked closer to the booth, smiling at Maria. "Hi, Maria, right? I don't think we've properly met." Jules said and the girl nodded, staring at Julianna with a small bit of fear. After Tory knocked a girls tooth out and Julianna ripped another's hair out, all of the girls have been terrified of them.
"Yeah... You're Julianna, right?" Maria asked, side stepping when Jules got right up to her to scoot back into the booth beside Hawk.
Julianna sat down with a sigh and a smile. "Yeah!" She answered and not even Hawk could tell if the voice she was giving the girl was fake and genuine.
Maria nodded, her shoulders tense as she looked back and forth between the couple. "I'll let you guys be." She said after a couple seconds, turning around.
"Bye!" Jules hummed, raising her hand and waving to the girl as she walked away.
Eli's eyes stayed glued on Julianna, his jaw dropping, but his lips twitched with amusement. Slowly, a crooked smile spread across his face as he moved closer, draping an arm around her shoulders. "Is Julianna Lawrence jealous?" His tone was teasing, every word dripping with fake disbelief.
Julianna let out a dramatic sigh, rolling her eyes even as a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "No. No, I was just..." She hesitated, glancing away as if she was searching for the right word. She turned back to her boyfriend and raised her eyebrows playfully "Protective."
Eli's grin grew, his eyebrows raising as he let out a low chuckle. "Protective, huh?" He repeated, his tone laced with faux intrigue that made Jules hum in agreement.
"Yeah. Maria did not care that you declined the first time. It was really rude to ask again." Jules clarified in a playful tone. When she looked back to Eli, the boy tilted his head. "You sure it wasn't jealousy?"
Julianna scoffed, swatting at his chest but struggling to hide the blush creeping up her cheeks. "In your dreams." She muttered, but her voice wavered just enough to give her away.
Eli hummed, the sound raspy and sending a shiver down her spine. "Every night, Sunshine." He murmured, dipping his head down to press a quick kiss against her neck. Julianna turned her head away as warmth spread across her face.
"Stop it!" She hissed, a flustered giggle leaving her lips with the words. But Eli kept going, leaving a trail of soft kisses along her neck until her laughter finally came out.
She could feel Hawk start to smirk against her neck before he lifted his head. He reached out, his finger grabbing Julianna's chin, turning her to face him. He smiled, his hand moving from her chin to her cheek.
"For the record, I thought it was cute." Hawk clarified.
Jules rolled her eyes but this time, she couldn't fight her smile. "Yeah, yeah." Julianna muttered, leaning in to kiss him.
Eli grinned into the kiss, his hand curling around the back of her neck. When they pulled apart, Jules looked around the empty table. She turned back to Eli, her eyebrows furrowed. "Where'd they go?"
Hawk sighed, getting more comfortable in the booth, letting Jules lean into his side as they both leaned back against the cushions. "Devon went to the bathroom and Lex wanted to take a walk on the beach. Dragged Demetri with her." He explained and he felt Jules nod against his chest.
He looked down at the table and nodded to Julianna's shirley temple. "How's the drink?" He asked and Jules hummed, reaching for the glass and bringing it up to Hawk's lips.
"It's a shirley temple so it's perfect." Jules said as Eli leaned forward, wrapping his lips around the straw to take a sip and when he pulled away, Jules brought the drink to her lips.
She couldn't taste any alcohol, which she knew meant she should be careful about how much of it she drank, but it was too good.
"Do you think they have to go cups? This is really good, but I'm gonna have to drink the last of it slowly and I don't want to waste anything." Jules asked and Hawk sighed, taking the drink out of Julianna's hands and putting it on the table.
"Then how about you take a break from your shirley temple and you and I dance?" Hawk asked, rubbing his hand up and down her arm. Jules turned to Hawk, a new sparkle in her eyes as she let out a small gasp.
"Such a gentleman asking me to dance!" Jules playfully gushed, getting out of the booth since she was sitting on the edge.
Hawk smiled, dipping his head to try and hide that and the pink growing on his cheeks. Julianna held her arms out for the boy and Eli took them easily. Once he was standing, his chest pressed right up against Julianna's, his hands moved to her waist, finding the small section of exposed skin between her pants and her shirt.
He spun her around by her hips, turning her to face the dance floor and as they started walking towards the crowd of other teens, Hawk leaned forward from behind Jules and kissed her cheek.
...
Lexi loved the smell of the beach. It didn't matter what beach she was at, what time of day, or even if she was right at the water or not. From blocks away you could smell the beach and Lexi absolutely adored it.
She walked hand in hand with Demetri across the shore, getting just far enough that the water wouldn't hit them when the waves came by.
Lexi smiled, ignoring the sand in her shoes as she smiled. "It's so beautiful here." She muttered, gazing at the ocean. Demetri turned to her and smiled at how much Lexi's eyes sparkled looking at their surroundings.
Lexi sighed, nudging a patch of sand with her foot. "I wish we had more time to do tourist-y things."
Demetri looked away, his smile fading. "Yeah, well, if we just dropped out of this stupid competition, we could do that." He muttered.
Lexi's face fell as she turned to him, her eyebrows pulling together. "Why do you keep doing that?"
The question made Demetri turn to her, his own face scrunched in confusion. "Doing what?" He asked and Lexi shook her head. "Shitting on this whole thing." She replied, keeping her eyes on him.
Demetri's shoulders slumped and he shook his head defensively. "Because it's stupid! We're not going to win, Lexi. Our team has no chance, and honestly, I don't even care."
Lexi stopped walking, yanking her hand from his. "Well, we have a chance because we haven't been disqualified yet! Stop saying we can't win."
Demetri turned to face her fully, his jaw tightening. "Why? What difference does it make? I don't care about winning, Lexi! Nothing's going to change for me when we go back home if we do."
Lexi stared at him for a moment, anger bubbling up in her chest from his lack of consideration. "This might not change your life, but this could change Robby's, and Miguel's, and Eli's lives!" Lexi screamed, throwing her arm out to the side as if the three boys were standing beside her.
Demetri scoffed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "It wouldn't change Eli's life! He applied to MIT like we planned!" Demetri spat and Lexi had to hold back rolling her eyes.
She closed her eyes instead and shook her head. "Demetri, you can't keep attacking Eli for not wanting to apply to MIT. " She said, her voice quieter now. She didn't want to yell and she just wanted the two boys to stop fighting all of the time. "If he changed his mind about going there, then he changed his mind. Be happy for him!" Lexi said desperately.
Lexi watched as Demetri's face fell and Lexi back straightened, thinking she finally knocked some sense into the boy.
But then he glared at the girl, and Lexi felt her heartbeat hammering in her chest.
"How could you side with him?" Demetri spat and Lexi frowned. A tired sigh left her lips as she shook her head. "How could you not?" Lexi whispered.
For a moment, Demetri didn't respond and Lexi took a step forward. "He's your best friend, Demetri! Where he goes to college will set him up for the rest of his life. Wouldn't you rather he go somewhere he loves than somewhere he feels forced to go?" Lexi yelled, her words coming out fast like word vomit.
Demetri stared at her, his expression hardening.
"Why did you even come if you didn't care?" She asked, her voice cracking as she shrugged her shoulder.
"I came here for you!" Demetri shouted. Lexi's mouth clamped shut, her eyes wide. She took a step back, stunned.
"You were the one who told me not to let this opportunity pass! I was perfectly content with my MIT acceptance and being considered for a spot there, but I didn't want it! You pushed me into coming to this stupid tournament!" Demetri yelled, and Lexi looked up at the boy, her eyes starting to water.
"Stop calling it stupid!" Lexi yelled, and as she raised her hand to point at herself, Lexi felt her hand start to shake uncontrollably. "I care about this thing!"
"Well, maybe you should rethink what you care about!" Demetri snapped, his arms spreading out sarcastically.
Lexi's jaw tightened, and before she could stop herself, she blurted, "Yeah, well, maybe I should rethink this relationship!"
Both of them froze.
The words hung in the air and Lexi took a small step back, her head getting dizzy as Demetri straightened up, his face pale.
"What?" Demetri asked quietly, his voice almost a whisper.
Lexi's throat felt dry. She looked down at her feet, then back up at him. "This whole trip..." Lexi closed her eyes and took a deep breath before speaking again. "This whole trip where I thought you and I would get the chance to spend so much time together and have so much fun... You didn't even want to be here."
Demetri's lips parted, and words struggled out, but Lexi beat him to it anyways. "You don't even want to be here and now you're stuck and we're fighting and it feels like you're not even trying to listen to me!" Lexi said, feeling her eyes start to burn and blur and she looked down to hide the tears.
Lexi felt a tear fall and with her head still down, she quickly wiped it. Demetri noticed the movement, his heart sinking. He took a small step toward Lexi, but when she lifted her head to speak again, he froze.
She inhaled shakily, feeling the sting of tears threatening to spill. Lexi turned her gaze downward, unable to meet his eyes. "I never wanted you to feel like you had to do this." She whispered, her voice barely audible. "I just thought... I thought it would be good for you. That it might help you see how strong you are, how much you're capable of."
Demetri froze mid-step, guilt flashing across his face, but he said nothing.
Lexi took a deep breath, her heart sinking in her chest. "I don't want you to resent me for making you feel like you had to come and I don't want to start resenting you because you keep talking down on something that's important to me." She said, her throat tightening with every syllable.
Her vision blurred completely now, and she bit the inside of her cheek, trying to keep herself composed. "So maybe..." She took a deep breath, her voice trembling. "For the rest of the competition... we just stop. Give each other some space, and when we get back home, we'll work it out."
Demetri felt like he had just been punched in the gut. His voice cracked when he spoke. "Wait. Are you—are you breaking up with me?"
Lexi's head shot up, her heart twisting at the look on his face and she quickly started to shake her head. "No!" She blurted, stepping toward him. "I'm not breaking up with you. But if we keep going like this... we'll lose everything."
Demetri stared at her, his hands trembling slightly at his sides as he blinked back tears. "Lexi, I don't... I don't want to lose you." He said, his voice shaky and his lip quivering.
Lexi raised her hand, cupping Demetri's face and forcing him to look down at her. "You're not going to. I just—we need this, Demetri. I need this. Please." Lexi whispered, her voice shaking.
He hesitated for a long moment, too scared to look away from Lexi's eyes. What if this was it? Even if Lexi said it wasn't. He started to think about earlier in the day. If he had known this would be happening, he would've prepped more; hugged her longer, kissed her more, stayed in bed for ten more minutes. Even if this was just a pause until they got back to LA.
He nodded, sniffling as a tear fell down his face. "Okay..." He whispered before finally nodding. "Okay."
Lexi stared up at Demetri, not knowing what to do next. Does she hug him? Does she just leave? Should she go back to the bar?
She decided to take a step back, her hand falling from the boys face. She stared at him as if her eyes physically couldn't look anywhere else even though he was extremely blurry from the tears in her eyes.
Without saying a word, Lexi sniffled and turned around, walking back to the hotel. Lexi crossed her arms over her chest and kept her head down as she walked. Her throat ached from holding back the tears, and her chest tight trying to stay composed. As soon as she heard him heading back to the bar, she broke.
Tears streamed down Lexi's face as her shoulders shook, a muffled sob escaping despite her biting her lip to silence her cries.
The noise caught someone's attention a few feet away from her on the beach and their eyebrows furrowed when they saw her.
"Lexi?"
Lexi quickly wiped her eyes and looked up at the voice calling her name. Her body relaxed and she let out a tired sigh when she saw Sam watching her with concerned eyes.
"What are you doing out here?" Sam asked before she finally noticed the tear stains on the girls cheeks. Sam's jaw fell and she stumbled toward Lexi, reaching out to touch the girls arm. "Oh my God. Are you okay?" She asked softly.
Lexi just blinked at Sam. The two never really got close when Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do became a single team, but she still had countless of sleepovers with her, Jules, Moon, and Yasmine and knew enough about Sam to confide in her just this moment.
She kept her eyes on the ground, her chest moving up and down to try and control her crying. "Demetri and I..." Lexi started, but she couldn't get the rest of the words out, her voice cracking.
Sam got the gist of it and her heart sank at Lexi's words. She remembered when Demetri first joined Miyagi-Do and he wouldn't shut up about Lexi and his crush on her. He even asked Sam for help on date ideas and ways to ask her out–after going to Jules first, of course.
But she didn't want to push Lexi. She twisted her body, looking to the walk that would lead back to the hotel before she looked back to Lexi, giving her a small smile. "Well, I was about to head back to the hotel. Do you want to come with? We could go to one of our rooms and watch a movie?"
Lexi stared at Sam with big eyes, searching the girls face for any trace of pity. She didn't want Sam to feel like she had to hang out with her just because she was crying, but Lexi could see a single ounce of pity in Sam's eyes.
She felt a small smile make its way onto her face and she sniffled. "Yeah." Lexi muttered, nodding her head. Sam blinked, shocked that Lexi actually agreed before the Gomez girl giggled. "But I get to pick the movie." Lexi said, her voice shaking as she tried to laugh after just crying.
Sam snickered, the two of them starting to walk back to the hotel. "Hm... Okay." Sam breathed out before he eyes widened and she turned to Lexi. "Oh my God! You will not believe what just happened before I saw you!" Sam laughed out, wanting to tell Lexi all about her interaction with Axel.
...
After some dancing, Eli and Jules headed back to their table so Devon wasn't left alone. The three opted out to just watching a movie off of Julianna's phone and Devon moved across the booth to sit beside the blonde, leaving Jules squished between her and Hawk as they watched The Hangover off of her phone.
About halfway through the movie, Demetri stomped into the bar, his head hung low and tears in his eyes. He grabbed his jacket off the seat of the booth and when Jules saw how upset he looked, she paused the movie and sat up straight, looking up at Demetri with wide eyes.
"I'm leaving." Demetri grumbled and Jules blinked in shock at the boys bluntness. She nodded her head, turning her phone off and shoving it into her purse. "Oh, um... Okay, then we'll all go. We're not splitting up." Jules said. She looked to Hawk, who was the one sitting at the edge of the booth, and motioned for him to get up so she and Devon could get out.
Hawk opened and closed his mouth, moving out of the booth as he mindlessly nodded. "Yeah, we will all go." He told Demetri before his eyebrows furrowed when he realized he came into the bar alone. Hawk looked around the room for Lexi and turned back to Demetri when he didn't see her.
"Where's Lex?" He asked just and Julianna's phone beeped. She pulled her phone out of her purse and read her new text from Lexi. "She just texted, her and Sam already started walking back."
As she put her phone back in her bag, Hawk's eyebrows raised. "She's walking with Sam willingly?" He whispered in shock. He's never seen Sam and Lexi interact one on one, so that was a shocker.
Jules looked up to Hawk, sending him a warning glare. "Don't jinx it."
She looked to the bar, and her nose scrunched when she didn't see Robby sitting in the chair he had been glued to the whole night. "What?" She muttered to herself and when she didn't see Robby in the room at all, Jules turned to Devon.
"Dev, do you know where Robby is?" She asked and Devon opened her mouth and looked up as she thought about it. After a couple seconds, Devon turned back to Jules and shrugged. "I saw him leave earlier."
Julianna sighed, reaching for her phone again. She opened up FindMy and let out a relieved breath of air when she saw Robby was already back at the hotel. She turned off her phone and shoved it back into her purse as she looked to the three, nodding her head. "Okay, he's already back at the hotel. That's everybody."
With that, the four made sure no one left anything before they all started to walk back toward the hotel, Demetri uncomfortably quiet and Jules too drunk to notice.
