Chapter 23.

Briana Stark

"Shut it down, Doctor Selvig!" Dad harshly calls down to the man below.

"It's too late!" The doctor turns around and grins at us excitedly, "It can't stop now. He wants to show us something! A new universe,"

"Okay," dad says in the same unimpressed, bored tone and he raises his thrusters towards the device.

He fires a beam of plasma and then suddenly I see a blue barrier raise up around the device before it blasts out what looks like a tidal wave. Dad and next tumbles backwards through the air. Doctor Selvig slams into a nearby vent and lays crumpled on the gravel-covered roof.

"The barrier is pure energy," C.A.S.S tells me through my helmet.

"That would have been nice to know earlier," I mumbled.

"Alright. Plan B. Stay put," dad told me, we both drop down onto the tower and my feet crunch down onto the gravel. Dad's suit begins to disassemble from around him. Both dad and Loki glare at each other as they slowly make their way into the penthouse.

It felt like hours that I've been waiting outside while dad and Loki are more likely threatening each other inside. The sound of shattering glass catches my attention and I look only to see dad plummeting towards the cement sidewalk over a thousand feet below. Then a large red pod shoots from the window and follows dad down, it slowly opens and envelops him within an Iron Man suit. The thrusters catch him just before he hits the ground, and then he turns and shoots back up towards Loki who is now standing in the window.

The Tesseract suddenly bursts out like a flame. I looked up, following the beam that stabs the blue sky. My lungs felt like collapsing as the sky rips open and a large hole shows up. Then comes the monsters. They swarm like insects through the hole and dive down towards the earth, ready to purge it of us.

"Right, armor," I hear dad say.

The next thing I know is that I'm shooting these monsters. They shake and tremble from the blast, but they keep coming while more explosions continue to go off. Natasha then suddenly speaks up, "Stark, we're heading northeast,"

Well, it's about time!

"What? Did you stop for drive-thru?" Dad asked. "Swing up park, I'm gonna lay em' out for you,"

The fight continues. As we all fought, I lost count of how many monsters I kill, how many are coming, and how long the fight lasted. However long the fight lasted, we're fighting as a team. Me and Natasha reach the top of Stark Tower and we quickly go over to Selvig, who's groaning in pain. He sits up with a confused look and looks around, trying to figure out what's going on.

"Doctor Selvig, we need to shut down the portal," Natasha said.

"It's too late, I did this. It's all my fault," he said.

"Well, you didn't know what you were doing," Natasha added.

"Actually, I think I did. I built in a safety to cut the power source," Selvig said.

"Loki's scepter?" I asked.

He nodded and then his eyes travel down to it. Natasha quickly grabs it and we go over to the portal. The barrier zaps and tries to force her away from it, but Natasha manages to get the scepter into place.

Natasha yells over the comms, "Hey! I can close it! Do you guys hear me? I can close the portal!"

Steve yells back, "Do it!"

Dad's voice suddenly says, "No, wait!"

"Stark, these things are still coming!" Steve argues.

"I got a nuke coming in," dad speaks up. "It's gonna blow in less than a minute, and I know just where to put it,"

Steve slowly says, "Stark, you know that's a one way trip?"

My body goes numb and my heart drops, "W-what? Dad?" I asked.

Dad speaks to Jarvis, "Save the rest for the return, J,"

My body starts trembling.

"Sir, shall I call Miss Potts?"

The fear runs through my veins.

"You might as well,"

"Dad?" I asked again.

"It's okay, munchkin," dad says, he begins shooting up to the side of the tower with a nuclear weapon on his back. His suit glides up into the sky, following the stream of light towards the portal.

"Daddy!" I screamed, tears blurred my vision, "No!"

He repeats, "It's okay, you'll be okay,"

"Daddy!" I yelled. "No! No!"

"We won, sweetie,"

"Dad! Stop!"

He plunged into the hole, I hear a few words through the chaos, "Hey, I do l-"

He doesn't finish.

"Daddy! No!"

The rest is covered in static as his body completely disappears from the darkness. My breath catches in my throat, the world slows down and I'm staring at the black hole. I distantly hear crashing from around me as the Chitauri warriors crumble to their death. I stared at the hole in the sky, begging that my father will come back to us.

To me.

But nothing happens.

And it's too late.

A huge light explodes within the darkness. That's how I know that he did it. But what hurts me the most is that...

He's gone.

"Close it," Steve says quietly.

I stared up at the hole in the sky, as if he'll still come back down to me despite the nuke going off already. I hear the device shudders and then the beam of light stretching to the sky shuts down. The portal flushes from blue to black and it curls away to a close. What brings tears of joy to my eyes is that I see the familiar red and gold suit falling through the sky.

He's here, he's alive.

He came back to us.

To me.

I hear Steve exclaim, "Son of a gun,"

Suddenly Hulk is tackling my father out of the sky and slamming the both of them into the nearby building. Bruce keeps dad safe in his arm, being sure not to crush him or smash him into the concrete wall before landing onto the ground. Then Hulk releases a deep, low roar that seems to shake the entire block. I hear a gasp from my father and I give a sigh of relief.

He's home.
