The Wedding (Part 1)
"Ok so everyone's here" Rhodey said as he walked with Pepper, a bit frantically. There was still so much to do and set up, and the cake was totally MIA, and for some reason all of the napkins have disappeared.
"Except for the fucking grooms of course" Pepper muttered under her breath, motioning for Peter to follow the two. The reception was immediately after the main wedding, so it needed to be totally ready for when everyone would get there.
Currently, the small group of friends Tony and Stephen had invited were aimlessly milling around the lakeside, excitedly chatting with one another.
"Do we have enough seats for everyone?" She asked Peter, who was ground patrol, and was supposed to tell her if anything that could go wrong showed up, like not enough chairs.
"We added extra, remember? Because Tony said that at weddings people always bring a plus one when they're not supposed to. The seating is fine" he assured her, deciding not to tell Pepper that just a few minutes prior, he had been worrying about the exact same thing.
"Baby boy!" Wade called, dragging Peter away from Rhodey and Pepper. "Matt has the audacity to say he looks better than me in a tux"
"Matt's blind"
"EXACTLY. I look FAR better than him"
"No that's not what I meant"
Rhodey and Pepper kept walking at a steady pace, periodically checking in on different places. It was a sunny day out, but not too hot as it was a generally shaded area. There was a small breeze in the wind that Pepper knew was Stephen's favorite thing about a spring day.
"Mantis!" Rhodey called, gaining the attention of the girl who was currently not doing anything. "Can you go around de-stressing people please? Some people are really worried" he said, and she nodded happily, already bouncing off to wherever she was supposed to go.
"Happy?" Pepper said, turning on the comm device in her ear, a link they established specifically for the wedding. "Any news on the cake?"
It seemed to be ok, as she then said a quick thanks and turned off the comm, now looking at her clipboard.
"What exactly am I supposed to do?" Rhodey heard Nebula ask from his left, and he was about to turn to help her, but Harley intercepted and began explaining that she'd just "yeet the flowers"
"Aren't the Maid of Honor and the Best Man supposed to be helping the Grooms now?" Sam asked, waking up next to them, and Pepper glared in the direction that she hoped Tony was in, wherever he was.
"We're helping them more right now than they could even comprehend" Rhodey answered, also glaring in the direction of Tony.
Pepper had been asked to be Tony's Maid of Honor, which didn't surprise her even a little bit. Both of them knew the wedding would collapse in flames without her there.
Rhodey had been asked to be Stephens Best Man for both the man and Tony. Steph and Rhodey had gotten along amazingly in the past couple of years, the Sorcerer Supreme loving Tony's old friend because he was "the only rational person Tony knows"
"What's the news on the table settings?" Rhodey asked, preoccupied with texting Tony to ask Bucky himself.
"The napkins have been found" Pepper relayed, clearly on the phone with Bucky. "All the food is ready and prepared, now just warming" she said. The reception was going to be held at a ballroom in Stark Tower, so the whole place is decked out as much as possible, in a strange mix of magical and technological decoration.
"Ok. Any word on the goddamned grooms?" Rhodey asked, clearly exasperated. Pepper was about to reply with a no but was interrupted by Peter.
“So um. Why am I the ring bearer?” Pepper looked at him with a mix of love and confusion.
“You’re his son? That’s what sons do” she said, already making her way away towards the cabin across from the lake. He hurried to catch up with her.
“No but... why not Harley? Or Nebula?” He asked, fidgeting with his fingers.
“Well, because we’re sticking to common gender rolls even though it’s literally a gay wedding, Nebula’s the flower girl” she explained.
“And Harley? Why couldn’t he do it?”
“He’s officiating the wedding. Somehow he legally can do that so that’s what’s happening” she said, turning to look at the boy with worry. “Why don’t you want to do it, Peter?”
He sighed and looked down. “I’m just really worried I’m going to mess this up. What if I’m bringing the rings and I trip and knock everyone over? Or what if I accidentally forget the rings? There’s so many things that could go wrong that I don’t want to because this is their wedding and it’s like the most important day of their lives and I don’t want to be the one to ruin it for them” he said, somehow getting it all out in one breath. He looked near tears, and Pepper gently moved him into one of the chairs set up around them.
“You’re wrong, you know” she said setting her clipboard down next to her. He looked up at her in confusion, still picking at his finger nails.
“About what?” He said, significantly less frantically than a moment before.
“Saying this is the most important day of their lives. You know what was?” She asked, smiling a bit.
“When they beat Thanos?”
“When they adopted you, Peter” she said, gently holding his shoulders. “Nothing you could do could ruin this for them, they love you too goddamned much” she assured him, smiling at the boy before standing up again to follow Rhodey.
“Everything ok?” He asked, turning back a bit to check on Peter in the background, who was still seated, albeit smiling this time.
“Yep” Pepper responded, checking off ‘console Peter after his inevitable break down’ off her list.
“Good” Rhodey said, looking down at his own check list, giving it a short once over. “Then we have everything covered. Except, of course-“
A screeching car pulled into the driveway of the cabin, Tony clearly driving, and pulled to a sudden stop just up the hill from where the wedding would be. Stephen, looking a bit sick because of the drive, stepped out of the passenger seat and made his shaky way down the hill to the group of people, while Tony sprinted inside.
“Who’s ready for a wedding?”
