Goodbye

(Suicide trigger warning)
Tony pressed play on the recording, tears in his eyes.
Peter smiled shakily, his eyes puffy and a bit red. He waved, and looked down at his lap, and cleared his throat.
"Um... hey Mr. Stark" He said quietly, wiping his left eye a bit. "I'm... I'm sorry"
"Kid..." Tony whispered sadly, looking down at his computer screen.
"I know you tried your best. And it was awesome! I'm so glad you did, I couldn't be more thankful" Peter said, his tone getting a bit happier for a moment, until his voice cracked a bit at the end and a few tears fell from his eyes.
"I could have done more..."
"But I just couldn't, anymore, Mr. Stark. Please don't think it was your fault! It wasn't! It wasn't your fault at all" Peter said, staring at the screen as if trying to stare into Tony's eyes.
Tony quickly wiped the tears from his eyes, staring intently at the screen, wondering when the pain would be over.
"Remember that one song I played on loop from Two Player Game, The Goodbye Song? Remember how the line goes 'Id stay if I could, but the universe won't let me'?"
Tony chuckled under his breath fondly, remembering the month Peter had become obsessed with George Salazar.
"Well I always thought that was a dumb excuse, but I kind of get it now" Peter said, looking off the camera a bit. He sighed, and shook his head.
"I bet you really wanna know why. Why I did what I did. And I just, I can't explain it" Peter said, suddenly speaking a bit louder.
"I'm so sorry Peter"
"I couldn't DO IT ANYMORE!" He yelled, his voice shattering Tony's heart, as the teens tears finally let loose and fell freely from his eyes.
"All those times I said 'saving people is my passion' I was LYING! I have no passion anymore! My chest constantly feels like an empty void! I dont CARE ANYMORE! I dont care anymore" He cried, suddenly breaking down at the last line.
"Oh my god..."
"All the times I said I was tired, because I didn't get a good nights sleep? I looked exhausted because I was tired of trying. Tired of making an effort when there was always a part of me saying it didn't matter. That I shouldn't make an effort. That in the end, it's always better off for everyone if I didn't do anything"
"Peter..."
"So I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so, so, so sorry. Thank you for taking care of me, Tony" Peter smiled, before shutting off the recording.
Tears streamed down Tony's face as the image of the last thing his kid would ever do was stuck on the screen.
This was the first time in a LONG time Tony has cried like this.
Or at all.
"Mr. Stark?" A soft called our from behind him. For the briefest moment, he expected to turn around and see the smiling face of his protégé looking right at him, but no. It was just some underpaid intern.
"Yes, Diana?" Tony replied quietly, tiring around to face the timid girl.
"It's time for you to head down... to the... um" she said, searching for the right thing to say. Tony looked over at the screen, shut it off, and then stood up.
"Thank you" He said, walking slowly to the door and putting on his jacket. It was Autumn, Peter's favorite season.
He decided to walk instead of taking a car, seeing as the service wasn't very far, and he needed some time to think, and cry by himself.
Everyone knew not to bother him. They all knew what happened to him. To his son.
Eventually he made it to Peter's favorite park. There was already a group of people congregated, not a lot seeing as only friends and family were invited, but still. They shouldn't have been gathered like this. Not for this reason.
He wiped his eyes for the final time, and made his way up the small stage, to speak to everyone.
"Peter loved this song, the Goodbye Song, with all his heart. It was fitting, such a soft, sweet song for such a soft sweet boy. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry something like this happened to him. None of this should have happened"
Tony looked around, and saw everyone wiping tears from their eyes, unafraid to cry in front of the rest. So he let go too.
"And although, he'll be out of sight, dear, know he'll be right here, right here forever" he said, quoting the song. He looked down at the photo of Peter clutched in his hands, and stepped off the stage.
More people stepped up to speak, but it was just a blur. Lost in his own thoughts, Tony barely noticed anyone else until he was drawn out of his thoughts by a tap on his shoulder.
"It's time, Tony" May said quietly, bringing the both of them to the where the rest of the group has congregated next to the grave. A few more kind words were shared, and a priest arrived as well. It was only a few more minutes, before the coffin was lowered into the ground.
Everyone but May and Tony left, leaving the two next to the grave.
"I'm sorry May. I failed both you and him" Tony said quietly, his usual bravado and confidence gone. May laughed softly, and looked down at the ground her precious nephew had just been lowered into.
"You did all you could have. I cant possibly thank you enough for giving him such happiness when you could. For sticking with him through thick and thing. It's not everyday that a billionaire decides to do something like that" May said, resting a hand on Tony's shoulder.
"It's not every day that an amazing boy like Peter is born either, is it May?" Tony reasoned, laughing under his breath. They both looked down at the hole in the ground that held the one person dearest to the both of them.
"I'm sorry, Peter" May said softly.
"I'm sorry son. I love you so much" Tony whispered, a single tear dripping down his cheek as he and May both dropped their handfuls of soil into the grave, solidifying what they dreaded most.
"And don't you forget me"
Please don't ever consider suicide. Please always remember there ARE people that care about you, whether it's someone close to you, or even me. If you ever need to talk to anyone, please don't hesitate to message me, I'm happy to talk.
