Chapter Nine

The darkness is broken by flashes of light. They become more often and longer as time goes by. At one point I see what looks like cobblestone streets and brick houses lining them. But then the darkness returned and I fall back into oblivion.

                                   ~

Beep beep. Beep beep. Beep beep.

Oh great, again?

I open my eyes to see that I once again am in the hospital. This time a nurse is hovering over me, glaring.

The room is so bright, I squint and I don't think she realizes I am awake because she continues to scowl. She mutters under her breath, "Stupid girl."

I raise an eyebrow and she nearly jumps out of her skin. "You're awake."

Why yes I am, Captain Obvious.

"I'll get the doctor." She says before running out of the room.

After a minute a man, who looks like he came straight out of a magazine, walks in. Messy blonde hair, tall, lean figure in a blue-green smock.

He looks at a clipboard by my bed. "Ember Wes, is it? I'm Doctor Burret."

"That's me." My voice comes out scratchy. "What'd I do this time?"

"We are not exactly sure. You seem perfectly healthy, and show no signs of what would've caused the coma."

"How long was I out?"

"You seem pretty relaxed for someone who just woke up in the hospital." I shrug and he continues, "Two weeks."

"Again? How long until I am released?"

"We would like to hold you for another week, this time, to make sure you are back to normal."

I groan. Another week? What am I supposed to do?

"I'm sorry but it is for your safety. Would you like us to contact your emergency contact and tell them you're awake?"

"Who is it?" I ask sitting up.

Dr.Burret scans the clipboard, "A Samantha Harrison. Is that a yes?" He asks as my eyes light up.

"Yeah call her please."

~

Thirty minutes later, Samantha was sitting next to me on my bed talking. "So they are both moms?"

"Riley and Blake? Yeah, crazy huh?"

"What are their names again?"

"Zoë, Joshua and the others are unnamed."

"What others?"

"You didn't hear? Blakely is pregnant again, twins."

"What?!"

"I know right?"

"Whose the dad?" I ask.

"Andrew, her high school sweetheart, I don't remember if you met him. But he is this tech genius and he created this company. Now they basically don't need to work ever again."

"Is he cute?"

"I guess." She shrugs, nonchalant.

"Okay what about Zoë's?"

"Derrick...Maybe...?I...can't remember. She told me once, when she found out she was pregnant but I never met the guy."

"Oh, odd. Has Blake decided on any names?"

"I don't think they've decided, she's only six weeks along, but they want bible names."

"Why?"

"Andrew is very religious, and Blake goes along with it."

"Hmm. Don't you have work?" She looks hurt, "No! I'm not trying to get rid of you, I mean, you live alone so don't you have to work?"

"Oh, not at the moment. I only have to upload once a week and I have some premade videos."

"What do you do?" I ask, confused.

"I'm a YouTuber."

"A what?"

"You-Tube-r." She stretches it out, "I get paid to make videos and post them online."

"What kind of videos?"

"Whatever I feel like making. Tutorials, sitdowns, vlogs, reviews. Anything that I think would be mildly entertaining."

"Hmm. Does Blake have a job?"

"Not anymore, she was a personal trainer, but she decided she'd rather spend time with Joshua."

"What about Riley?"

"She is a barista, waitress and a secretary." I must have a strange look on my face because she says, "She is a single mother going to law school. She works from seven at night to two in the afternoon the next day."

"She only has five hours a day to spend with Zoë and sleep?"

"And do her online college classes. Yeah, not the greatest situation but Ri's tough, plus Zoë loves being in my videos so I get to watch her."

A YouTuber, a barista/waitress/secretary/future lawyer/mother, and a personal trainer/mother. I have some cool friends.

We spend the rest of the night chatting until she falls asleep on my shoulder. I scoot over and soon fall asleep too.

When I wake up, Samantha is sleep hugging me. My arms are pinned to my sides. I lay there for a minute before whispering, "Sam."

She doesn't move. "Sam! Samantha!" I say, gradually getting louder.

She stirs, "What?" When she realizes what she is doing, her face flushes and she lets go. "Sorry."

"Wanna find us some breakfast?"

"I don't want more hospital food. I'll go find something else."

"Fine, be quick."

She climbs up and walk to the door.

She passes a mirror on the way and makes a U-turn back to brushes her teeth and hair. She puts on some concealer and mascara she found in her bag the ran out the door.

I get out of bed and take a quick shower. When I go back out the nurse is back and asking me a series of questions.

I answer as quickly as possible, Samantha had returned holding up a bag of food that smells heavenly.

Finally satisfied, Willow, I find out her name is, leaves us to our food.

My hospital basically stay turns out to be a sleepover. We watch movies, talk, do each other's hair, and Blake visited, but sadly Riley couldn't come. Nurse Willow already tried kicking out Samantha but couldn't find a valid reason.

Finally a week later they release me and go to Samantha's to stay until I can figure something out.

I have a decent set up in the living room. Pull out couch, stacks of clothes and a hideous dog that sleeps on my lap.

That night, I sit out on the balcony with Sam staring out at the city that blurs out the stars.
