Year 2: Chapter Three (Rewrite)

"Psst, Y/N." Draco whispered from behind him.

He tried to ignore it. He was sat next to Hermione in the transfiguration class, waiting for Professor McGonagall. Draco sat behind with one of his friends whilst Harry and Ron sat in front.

"Y/N." He called out once more, this time throwing a piece of paper at the back of his head.

Again, Y/N ignored him. After Draco had told Hermione she'd be next when the Mrs. Norris incident had happened, Y/N had been very cross with him. A death threat was not something Y/N respected, not even in his own brother.

"Y/N!" Draco nearly yelled this time, throwing a bigger scrunched up piece of paper at Y/N.

Y/N snapped around, finally getting irritated. He shot Draco a glare before picking up the crunched up parchment. Draco gave him a sorry smile before gesturing for him to read the page. Y/N sighed, turning back to face the front before reading it.

"I'm sorry, Y/N. To you. Not the Muggle-born." Hermione leaned in close to Y/N to read.

"Gee, thanks."

With the roll of her eyes, she was back to her schoolwork. Y/N furrowed his eyebrows. It wasn't him that Draco needed to be sorry for, he wasn't the one that was hurt. He turned back to face his brother who was now doing puppy eyes at him. Y/N scratched his head before tapping Hermione on the shoulder.

"Do you have a spare piece of parchment, Granger?" He asked, dipping his quill in ink.

Hermione hummed out a response, sliding a spare page over to Y/N. She was too occupied in her study to pay much attention to the twins.

"Apologise to Granger. Not me. After class." Y/N said as he wrote down his words.

He proof read his spelling before scrunching it up into a ball and throwing it to Draco. Just in time for Professor McGonagall to enter the room.

"Could I have your attention, please?" She spoke as she made her way to the front.

Both Y/N and Hermione put down their quills. There was no chance now that Draco could reply during class. He knew how much attention Y/N paid in classes.

"Right. Now, today, we will be transforming animals into water goblets. Like so."

Professor McGonagall pointed her want at a bird, tapping it a few times and counting to three.

"Vera Verto." She casted, successfully transfiguring the bird into a transparent glass.

All students had a look of amaze on their faces. All of them except Hermione. Instead, she had this deep thinking expression. Y/N wondered why.

"Now it's your turn. Who would like to go first?" The professor rolled her sleeves off before wandering along the rows.

She stopped when she spotted Ron.

"Ah, Mr. Weasley. One, two, three. Vera Verto." She instructed, demonstrating the wand movement.

Ron licked his lips, nodding. He was excited to try it out. With the clear of his throat, he casted the spell, pointing at his rat.

"Vera Verto!"

The rat transformed, but not in the way Ron anticipated. Whilst taking shape of the goblet, it remained furry. And had a tail. Y/N grimaced. That looked gross.

"That wand needs replacing, Mr. Weasley." Professor McGonagall took notice of his badly taped wand.

Before Ron could reply, Hermione's hand shot up. They were about to find out what it was that occupied her mind.

"Yes, Miss Granger?" Professor McGonagall called on her as she made her way back to the front of the class.

"Professor... I was wondering if you could tell us about..." Hermione paused, hesitating slightly.

"The Chamber of Secrets?"

The class went silent. They all stared at McGonagall with mixed expressions. Some were curious, some were scared. But none of them were smiling. Y/N took a glance at Hermione. She must've been very shaken up about the writing on the wall.

"Very well..." The professor gave in after taking a deep breath.

""You all know, of course... that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. Now, three of the founders, co-existed quite harmoniously. One did not. Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts."

The professor dressed in green strolled around the classroom as she spoke. The childern's eyes and heads followed.

"He believed magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. In other words, pure-bloods." Professor McGonagall took a glance at Draco, then at Y/N.

Y/N watched as Draco glared right into the back of Hermione's head. Y/N shook his head at his brother. After everything, Hermione helping him out in his first year, seeing her talent, Draco would always hate her. Simply for her blood. Luckily, Hermione didn't notice the glare. Y/N didn't mention it.

"Unable to sway the others, he decided to leave the school. Now, according to legend... Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in this castle known as the Chamber of Secrets. Though, shortly before departing, he sealed it... until that time when his own true Heir returned to the school. The Heir alone... would be able to open the Chamber and unleash the horror within, and by so doing, purge the school of all those who, in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study magic."

"Muggle-borns..." Hermione spoke in a quiet voice.

"Well, Naturally, the school has been searched many times. No such chamber has been found." McGonagall nodded before making her way back to the front.

"Professor? What exactly does legend tell us lies within the Chamber?" Hermione stopped the professor in her tracks.

Y/N raised a brow at Ron who now stared directly at him. Ron kept switching his gaze from him to Draco. Back and forth.

"The Chamber is said to be home to something that only the Heir of Slytherin can control." Professor McGonagall explained without hesitation.

"It is said to be a home... of a monster."

Everyone's face dropped in horror. Y/N noticed Hermione shuffle in her seat closer to him. Draco however? Smiled proudly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Do you think it's true? Do you think there really is a Chamber of Secrets?" Ron questioned as they fast-walked across the halls after class.

"Yes." Hermione wasted no time in answering.

"Couldn't you tell? McGonagall's worried. All the teachers are."

"I've heard my father mention it a few times." Y/N recalled, pressing his fingers to his chin.

His father didn't tell him about it, no. But Y/N did overhear him mention it to his mother once. There wasn't a lot to go off of, but Lucius Malfoy was not the type to joke.

"But if there really is a Chamber of Secrets, and it really has been opened..." Harry stuttered through his words, speaking in a hurry.

"That means..."

"The Heir of Slytherin has returned to Hogwarts. The question is, who is it?" Hermione finished for Harry, adding in a question of her own.

Y/N could immediately sense the daggers Ron was staring through him.

"Let's think. Who do we know thinks all Muggle-borns are scum?" Ron spat out as Draco conveniently walked past.

"If you're hinting towards Draco-" Before Y/N could finish his sentence, Ron had already cut him off.

"Of course!" He made a face, side-eying Draco who's back was turned.

"You heard him. 'You'll be next, Mudbloods.'"

"I heard him. But Malfoy, the Heir of Slytherin?" Hermione defended.

Y/N scoffed at Ron's words. Seriously, now all times, it was Hermione who defended him and his brother. Hermione.

"I think I'd know if my own brother is some Heir. He barely knows how to tidy his bed." Y/N spat back, rolling his eyes.

Ron furrowed his eyebrows, squinting at Y/N. He thought a bit. Something he didn't do often.

"Maybe it's you, then." Ron's thinking clearly didn't do much for him.

"Now you're just being ridiculous." Hermione sighed, continuing on her defense.

"Besides, Y/N had been with me in the library the entire time. There's no possible way he could have done anything."

"Then the twins worked together!" Ron snapped back, raising his voice.

Y/N couldn't even speak up before Harry joined in.

"Maybe Ron's right, Hermione. I mean..." Harry trailed off, looking Y/N in the eyes.

He gulped. Harry's eyes were unsure but it was the only lead they had.

"Look at their family."

The blonde was flabbergasted at Harry's switch up. Sure, Ron and Harry were quicker to get closer, but Y/N was Harry's first friend. And there's a lot Y/N had gone through to be friends with him, a lot he'd thrown away for a 12 year old.

"You're joking, right?" Y/N's jaw dropped, he just couldn't believe it.

"Crabbe and Goyle must know. Maybe we could trick them into telling!" Ron suggested with a smile.

"Or you could trust your friend?" Y/N exclaimed, eyebrows raised so high, it could reach the roof.

Hermione gave him a look. It wasn't a look Y/N was familiar with. Was it... sympathy?

"Y/N's right, you know?" Hermione didn't stop defending Y/N.

He knew it was because she was the only one with a brain.

"He's helped us with the Philosopher's stone. He defended us from his own dad, I can't believe how much trouble he'd have gone through to do that. He can be annoying, but I don't think he'd use us."

"We can't take any chances until we're sure." Harry was firm in his wording, it pained Y/N.

Both Y/N and Hermione looked dejected at this point, their faces sharing the same expression.

"Sorry, Y/N." Hermione spoke with disappointment.

It took a few seconds for Y/N to reply. The shock of both Harry not trusting him and Hermione being the one to defend him was a lot at once.

"Thanks for sticking up for me, Granger." Y/N pat her shoulder lightly.

Genuine gratitude was rare for a Malfoy to give. He smiled softly. Y/N was never that close with Hermione, though often hanging out with her. He believed Harry to be his best friend. But now, things seemed as if it were changing. His thoughts and the world around him was changing.

"Anyways, even Crabbe and Goyle aren't that thick. But there might be another way to prove Y/N's innocence." Hermione spoke up after a long silence of thinking.

"Mind you, it would be difficult. Not to mention we'd be breaking about 50 school rules... It'll be dangerous. Very dangerous.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Y/N and Hermione searched the rows of books on the shelf. There was a certain potion they needed to be brewing and Hermione knew she needed Y/N's help to do it.

"I found it!" Hermione spoke up as soon as she had spotted the book.

She reached for it, only to find it a bit too high up for her. Luckily Y/N came to the rescue, reaching up from behind her.

"I've got it." Y/N whispered into her ear, though not intentionally.

After retrieving the book, he glanced towards Hermione who stared at him. Her face was painted a light shade of pink. He smirked.

"What is it Granger?" Y/N leaned in close to her face, making her blush more.

"Finally fallen for my charming smile?"

Hermione opened her mouth to speak, only for Y/N to walk off before hearing an answer. Without looking back, he waved the book, motioning for her to follow. They shared no words as they arrived at the table Ron and Harry stood by. Y/N leaned against the wall, turning the pages before lowering it a little so Hermione could read.

"The Polyjuice Potion. 'Properly brewed, the Polyjuice Potion allows the drinker to transform himself temporarily into the physical form of another.'" Hermione read out from the book Y/N held.

"You mean... If Harry and I drink that stuff, we'll turn into Crabbe and Goyle?" Ron asked, impressed by the potion's abilities.

"Unfortunately." Y/N grimaced.

He never really liked Crabbe and Goyle, often comparing them to brainless trolls. Ron and the two were more alike than Y/N had thought about.

"Wicked!" Ron exclaimed.

"Malfoy will tell us anything!"

Y/N cleared his throat, raising a brow at Ron.

"Hello, Malfoy here. You could trust your friend instead!" Y/N spoke sarcastically.

Even after he proves his innocence with their plan, he knew he'd hold a grudge over this for a long time. A Malfoy never forgets.

"Besides, if I really was the heir, wouldn't I go off and tell Draco about your little plan right now?"

They all went silent. Clearly they haven't thought this through. They never did.

"Y/N's right. It would be much easier if we just trusted him." Hermione sighed after reading the page.

"I've never seen a more complicated potion than this."

By now, Y/N had given up. He was sure everyone knew that regardless of any warning, Draco would spill anything. His ego was so big that he'd just assume he could tell if anyone was a fake or not. He yawned, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.

"How long will it take to make?" Harry asked after being silent for a while.

"A month." Hermione replied whilst sneaking a glance at Y/N.

"A month?!" The raven-hared boy's eyes widened.

"But, Hermione! If Y/N and Draco are the Heirs of Slytherin, they could attack half the Muggle-borns in the school by then!" Harry started off with a half-shout but ended up whispering.

Y/N snickered. He still had it in his head that he'd be the heir. He brought his arms up, imitating claws with his fingers.

"Yeah, Granger. You're first on the list! Raah!" Y/N teased, scaring her by placing his hands on her shoulders.

Though initially surprised, Hermione giggled. She trusted him.

"Stop it!" She playfully hit his shoulder to which Y/N laughed at.

Harry and Ron only watched, both crossing their arms. They were serious. Upon realizing her light-hearted banter with Y/N, Hermione cleared her throat. They weren't close in that way, what were they doing? She spoke up. Y/N looked away, forcing a nonchalant expression.

"I know, Harry." Hermione said after clearing her throat once more.

"But it's the only plan we've got. If it's to prove his innocence, I'm sure Y/N and I can make it."

Y/N changed positions, yawning once more. He sat on top of a table. No signs of a smile was on his face. This hurt his pride a lot, friends that don't even trust him. If it were anyone else, he'd move on and get new friends. But there was this feeling that he needed to be a part of this. An attachment he didn't understand. Y/N didn't believe in fate, but somehow, he stuck with them.

"You owe me 10 galleons when this is over." The blonde sighed for about the 20th time since the accusations.

Another long year awaits.
