Chapter Three: Rivalry
They were sat in Transfiguration class, currently doing self-study, Y/N had run in late due to him socializing with a Ravenclaw, forgetting his next class was somewhere further. Y/N had instantly become popular in their school-year, he was social and easy to get along with, even other houses took interest in him, mostly girls their age.
"Today you will receive your small quiz results from last lesson." McGonagall spoke up, putting her quill away.
"I do admit, the test was a bit difficult due to this being only your third week in Hogwarts, I am impressed that one of you had gotten full marks.
"It's definitely gonna be our Y/N." One of the Slytherin students smirked.
Y/N grinned, when he wasn't out socializing or following Harry around, he studied a lot. Even back before going to Hogwarts he knew more than most kids his age, Draco was sure of that fact. McGonagall waved her wand, making papers fly around the room before falling on the tables. Y/N's mouth opened wide, his face dropped when he read his mark.
"98 out of 100?!" Draco blurted, looking over Y/N's shoulder.
"Then who?!"
"Woah! Nice going, Hermione's got full marks!" Neville praised, smiling widely at Hermione.
Y/N was in shock, how could a Muggle-born possibly do better than him in transfiguration. It must have been a coincidence.
"It must've been pure luck." Draco spat, rolling his eyes.
He could not believe that his dear brother could lose to anyone, he'd seen how well Y/N would do in any subject, always reading books at home when he could.
Although Y/N brushed it off, telling his friends that he didn't mind it, it was obvious to Draco that Y/N was extremely bothered.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"Y/N, come have lunch with us!" Draco yelled through the doors of their dorms.
"I'm going to head to the library, you go on ahead!" Y/N yelled back, he had reading glasses on with many papers covering his bed.
Y/N quickly gathered all of his scattered pieces of parchments, stuffing it in a small messenger bag whilst reading through his books, choosing which to return to the library. It had been a week since they had their transfiguration results back and he had been studying non-stop. He missed out on a few hours of sleep due to this, he refused to lose to Hermione once again. His father expected him to be the very best as soon as Y/N showed talent for magic, and he was terrified of his father. Draco was definitely his favorite.
Walking through the halls, Y/N felt a bit wobbly, clutching his head when he felt an ache though he continued to head to the library, pushing through his tiredness through the rows of shelves when his vision began to fade.
"Bloody hell." Y/N muttered as he lost consciousness.
--------------------------------------------------
"You're finally awake." Hermione's voice rang out while Y/N sat up.
"Granger?!" Y/N was startled upon hearing her voice, getting up from the couch he was laid across.
"Shhh we're in the library." Hermione scolded, reminded Y/N of where he was.
"I found you sleeping in between one of the isles. This was the furthest I could carry you, you are pretty heavy you know? There aren't many people in the library at lunch time."
"Shouldn't you be eating in the Great Hall with your friends?" Y/N questioned, his face was pink upon realizing that a Muggle-born had helped him.
He checked his watch, it had been about half an hour since he arrived at the library.
"I don't have... many friends..." Hermione looked away, shoving her face into her book.
"Oh..." Y/N went quiet, he thought with how smart she was, she'd at least have a few friends.
The two of them ended up staying in the library together, quietly studying at the same table, not sharing a word after that, it was quite awkward but Y/N felt a bit relieved. Had one of his friends seen him pass out, they might have teased him about it. From that day on, Y/N had considered Hermione worthy enough to be his rival.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"One of a wizard's most rudimentary skills is levitation or the ability to make objects fly." Professor Flitwick explained to the class.
"Do you have your feathers? Good."
Y/N stifled a laugh when he saw Hermione smile at the professor, holding up her feather for a second. Draco on the other hand full out chuckled, making Y/N elbow him slightly in the side.
"Now, don't forget the nice wrist movement we've been practicing." Professor Flitwick continued.
"The swish and flick. Everyone."
"The swish and flick." The students repeated, waving their wands accordingly.
"Good. Oh, and enunciate. Wingardium Leviosa. Off you go, then." Flitwick praised.
"Wingardium Levio-SUH" Draco casted, obviously not working.
"You sound like one of those Muggle surfer's Granger once talked about." Y/N giggled, making fun of his brother.
"You speak with the Mudblood?!" Draco gasped, raising an eyebrow.
"Definitely not! I just overheard it..." Y/N lied, refusing to admit that he sometimes had conversations with the Muggle-born.
"Wingardium Leviosa." Y/N casted perfectly, making his feather fly for the first time.
"See now, you've got the brains and I've got the looks." Draco grinned, shooting a playful finger gun at his brother.
"You wish, unlucky for you, I got both." Y/N smiled his signature cheeky grin.
"No, stop, stop, stop! You're going to take someone's eye out!" Y/N's eyes snapped to the same bushy haired girl that he had been competing with.
Ron's shoulders dropped along with his wand, obviously annoyed at Hermione already.
"Besides, you're saying it wrong. It's Levi-O-sa, not Leviosar."
"You do it then, if you're so clever." Ron groaned, rolling his eyes.
"Go on, go on."
"Wingardium Leviosa." Hermione casted perfectly, making her feather fly across the room, gaining the attention of their professor.
"Oh, well done! See here, everyone, Miss Granger's done it!" He praised.
"Splendid!"
"Wingard- Leviosa." Seamus casted, making his feather explode.
The students giggled, seeing the boy now covered in ashes, his hair all messy.
"I think we're going to need another feather over here, Professor." Harry said meekly, shocked at what had happened.
------------------------------------------------------
"'It's Leviosa, not Leviosar.'" Ron mocked as they made their way out of the classroom.
Y/N raised an eyebrow while Harry, Seamus and Dean laughed.
"She's a nightmare, honestly! No wonder she hasn't got any friends. Even you'd agree, right Malfoy?"
"What? How could I possibly agree with that?" Y/N glared at him.
Ron raised an eyebrow, he knew the Malfoy's were strongly against Muggle-born's, surely Y/N would have agreed.
"I mean- Draco's probably waiting for me." Y/N stuttered before fast walking away.
Y/N could not believe he defended a Muggle-born, if his family heard about that, they'd nag him for hours.
Y/N made his way to the Great Hall, thunder roared as multiple lightning bolts flashed through the air. Y/N sat next to Draco as usual, conversating about classes and families with the other Slytherin students.
"Troll! In the dungeon! Troll in the dungeon!" Professor Quirrell yelled through the crowds of students after bursting through the giant doors.
The students went silent, instantly turning their heads to Dumbledore.
"Thought you ought to know."
Quirrell fainted right there in the middle of the Great Hall, causing the students to instantly panic, screaming as they dropped their food, instantly getting out of their seats.
"Silence!" Dumbledore yelled through their screaming.
Everyone instantly stopped and turned towards him.
"Everyone will please not panic! Now... prefects will lead their house back to the dormitories. Teachers will follow me to the dungeons."
"Y/N, where are you going?!" Draco questioned Y/N who instantly blended in with the crowd desperate to reach Harry.
"Harry! Weasley!" Y/N yelled, finally catching up.
"What?" Ron asked, turning his head.
"Granger's still in the bathrooms!" Y/N exclaimed while catching his breath.
"You're right! She doesn't know!" Harry realized, pulling Y/N and Ron with him, instantly running through the now empty halls.
"I think the troll's left the dungeon." Ron gasped when they heard growling and stomping.
Harry yelped before pulling the two behind a pillar. They watched as the troll stomped through, pulling a giant club behind him.
"It's going into the girl's bathroom!"
The trio instantly ran towards the room, bursting through the doors upon hearing Hermione scream.
"Out of the way, Granger!" Y/N yelled, picking up pieces of rubble.
Hermione looked towards him before starting to crawl away just as the troll swung it's club, destroying the stalls above her. She squealed for help, stuck under the rubble while the troll slowly bent down towards her. The boys grabbed pieces of broken wood, throwing it at the troll.
"Hey, pea brain!" Ron screamed, trying to get the troll's attention away from Hermione.
The troll turned towards them when Y/N hit it right on top of the head, allowing Hermione to crawl away but not without the troll noticing. She screamed when the troll swung it's club at her, destroying the sink she hid under.
"Help!" She shouted in distress.
Y/N waved his wand in panic at the troll, shooting out a small blue flame at it's hand, causing it to drop it's club. Harry instantly ran towards the troll, hopping onto it's club just as the troll picked it up. He mounted the troll's shoulders, making it throw him around before Harry stuck his wand up the troll's nose, angering it and making it pick Harry up by the leg.
"Do something!" Harry shouted.
"Y/N do the fire thing again!" Ron screamed, watching as Harry got swung around.
"I don't know how!" Y/N yelled back, swinging his wand, trying to get the same reaction.
"Swish and flick!" Hermione instructed them from under the sinks, making the hand movements.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" Ron casted, taking the club from the troll and dropping it on it's own head, causing it to go unconscious and dropping Harry.
"Cool." Ron grinned.
"I've got you, Harry!" Y/N dove onto the ground, sliding on the floors, causing Harry to fall onto his back.
"Ow."
"Sorry!" Harry yelped, instantly getting up and helping Y/N stand.
The quartet stood around the troll, inspecting it.
"Is it dead?" Hermione asked.
Y/N crouched down and poked it with his wand, trying to see if it would react.
"I don't think so." Y/N replied before standing up and dusting off his robes.
Harry pulled his wand out of the troll, leaving a thick trail of snot making him groan.
"That's rancid." Y/N made a disgusted face.
"Troll bogies." Ron winced.
"Ah!" Professor McGonagall gasped upon entering the room with Quirrell and Snape.
"Oh, my goodness! Explain yourselves, all of you!"
"Well-" The boys all started speaking at the same time.
"It's my fault, Professor McGonagall." Hermione spoke up, defending them.
Y/N, Harry and Ron all exchanged confused looks.
"Miss Granger?" Professor McGonagall questioned, not believing her.
"I went looking for the troll. I'd read about them and thought I could handle it." Hermione lied.
"But I was wrong. If Y/N, Harry and Ron hadn't come and found me, I'd probably be dead."
"Be that as it may, it was an extremely foolish thing to do. I would've expected more rational behavior on your part and am very disappointed in you, Ms. Granger." McGonagall scolded.
"Five points will be taken from Gryffindor... for your serious lack of judgement."
She turned her head towards the three boys.
"As for you three gentlemen... I just hope you realize how fortunate you are. Not many first-year students could take on a full grown mountain troll and live to tell the tale." She scolded them.
"Five points... will be awarded to each of you... for sheer dumb luck."
"Actually, I believe we were rather skillful..." Y/N muttered under his breath, shrugging his shoulders.
McGonagall didn't hear him and walked away, leading Snape away.
"Perhaps you ought to go. It might wake up." Quirrell ushered the quartet out.
"He's rather odd isn't he?" Y/N spoke up as they walked down the halls.
"Professor Quirrell?" Ron asked, turning his head to the blonde.
"Yeah. Anyways, thanks Granger." Y/N looked towards Hermione, her hair was now bushier than ever.
"Yeah, good of you to get us out of trouble like that." Harry praised.
"Mind you, we did save her life." Ron spat.
"She wouldn't have even been in there if it hadn't been for you, Weasley." Y/N spat back, matching Hermione's walking pace.
"What are friends for?" Ron smiled, finally accepting her as part of their group.
