Chapter Three: Recruitment
"Do you ever stop eating?" Hermione scrunched her face up at the ginger-haired boy who stuffed his face with food as if it was his last meal.
"What? I'm hungry." Ron groaned with a mouthful of sausage before continuing on.
"I suppose mother was correct about the Weasley's having no manners." Y/N spat, turning to the next page of his book.
"Hey!" Ginny glared at him.
"Sorry, not sorry." Y/N poked his tongue out at her before leaning his head onto Hermione's shoulder.
"Why are you at our table anyways?" Ron complained.
Hermione sighed, eating her food quietly while serving as Y/N's head rest. She did not want to get involved with their fight.
"Same reason why you're not at a pig pen. Cause I want to be here." Y/N rolled his eyes, lifting his head from Hermione's shoulder.
Hermione facepalmed at the two before looking away to see Harry approaching.
"Harry." She greeted with a smile.
"Can I join you?" Harry asked shyly, making Y/N snicker.
Y/N instantly regretted it, being hit on the shoulder by Hermione.
"Pardon me, professor, but what exactly are you insinuating?" They heard Umbridge's voice echoing through the hall.
"Tea." Y/N grabbed a piece of toast before walking off towards the voice.
"Y/N!" Hermione called out before following him.
"I am merely requesting that when it comes to my students... you conform to the prescribed disciplinary practices." McGonagall answered her with her usual warm yet stern voice.
Y/N watched their argument with amusement, eating his toast slowly with a smile. Hermione had caught up to him along with Harry, Ron an Ginny. She stood next to the boy who instantly began gossiping with a few Slytherin students. The girls instantly made faces of dismay when they noticed Hermione's presence.
"So silly of me, but it sounds... as if you're questioning my authority in my own classroom... Minerva." Umbridge growled, taking a step up the stairs to appear higher in authority than McGonagall.
Y/N wrapped his arm around Hermione's shoulders, pulling her closer to him. Most of the Slytherin girls were very jealous of Hermione. She was the top of their grade and was dating the most popular guy.
"Not at all, Dolores, merely your medieval methods." McGonagall spat back, taking a step up the stairs to be on the same level as her but she was far taller than the overly pink professor.
"I am sorry, dear. But to question my practices is to question the Ministry... and by extension, the minister himself." Umbridge frowned.
"I am a tolerant woman... but the one thing I will not stand for is disloyalty."
"Pfft. She's hardly a woman." Y/N chuckled.
"Y/N." Hermione scolded, worried her boyfriend would get in trouble again.
"Sorry, love." Y/N muttered, placing a gentle kiss on her head.
"Disloyalty." McGonagall repeated in shock, taking a step back.
"Things at Hogwarts are far worse than I feared." Umbridge took another step up, now speaking to the students that have gathered.
"Cornelius will want to take immediate action."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Having already revolutionized the teaching of Defense Against the Dark Arts... Dolores Umbridge will, as high inquisitor, have powers... to address the seriously falling standards at Hogwarts School." Fudge explained to the reporters as camera's flashed from every side of him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You applied first for the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, is that correct?" Umbridge questioned Snape in the middle of his class, writing on a piece of parchment.
"...Yes..." Snape answered, refusing to look at her.
Even Professors believed Hogwarts was like a living nightmare at the moment.
"But you were unsuccessful?" Umbridge mocked.
"...Ob...viously." Snape replied in his usual emotionless tone.
Ron snickered, earning himself a whack on the head with Snape's book.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days have past since the previous incidents and Umbridge had basically taken over Dumbledore's role. She had enforced so many new rules that even Hermione, who had followed every rule that she could, was getting annoyed. She ruined any fun of school, making it seem more like a prison than a learning environment.
Y/N didn't have much trouble following the rules such as the music ban and Weasley product ban but he did get very annoyed that he now had to be snuck into the Gryffindor common room to hang out with his friends.
"What's going on?" Draco asked upon seeing his brother who quickly made his way across the courtyard.
"Professor Trelawney's in trouble." Y/N whispered, dragging him along behind him.
The two boys stood in the front row of the crowds of students as Filch brought a few suitcases over at the trembling Professor.
"Granger." Y/N smiled upon seeing his girlfriend who had just joined in the crowd along with Ron and Harry.
"This is horrible." Hermione felt instant remorse as the sight of the sobbing teacher.
She didn't like Trelawny's classes but that did not mean she had to be treated like this.
Hermione was short in height compared to the blonde twins so Y/N pulled her in front of him before wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"Six- Sixteen years I've lived and taught here." Trelawny stuttered at Umbridge who looked at her with a cold stare.
"Hogwarts is my home... You can't do this."
"Actually, I can." Umbridge smiled, holding a piece of parchment.
"Pity. I quite liked her easy classes." Draco chuckled, earning himself a glare from Hermione.
"Seems to be the only classes you'd ever pass." Hermione mocked, rolling her eyes.
"Y/N control your little Mud- Muggle-born." Draco spat out.
Y/N sighed, changing his position to Hermione's other shoulder so the two wouldn't be able to look at each other. Y/N placed a soft kiss onto Hermione's cheek before watching the scene in front of them once more.
McGonagall had arrived at the scene, quickly pushing past the students to comfort the sobbing Divination professor.
"Something you'd like to say, dear?" Umbridge kept the smile on her face.
"Oh, there are several things I would like to say." McGonagall spat, hugging Trelawny as she blew her nose.
The castle doors cracked open, forcing everyone's gazes to the man who had appeared. Dumbledore finally made an appearance after the long dreadful days of Umbridge's rule. Umbridge stared smugly at him as he approached them.
"Professor McGonagall, might I ask you to escort Sybil back inside?" Dumbledore ordered with authority.
Trelawny whimpered out a few 'thank you's as McGonagall brought her in.
"Dumbledore, may I remind you that under the terms of Educational Decree Number 23, as enacted by the minister-" Umbridge spoke with an annoyingly forced high pitched voice.
"You have the right to dismiss my teachers." Dumbledore cut her off.
"You do not, however, have the authority to banish them from the grounds. That power remains with the headmaster."
"For now." Umbridge's smile returned.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"That foul, evil, old gargoyle." Hermione spat, walking back and forth across the Gryffindor common room.
Harry had dragged Y/N into the room after another detention with Umbridge, making sure that Umbridge hadn't seen them.
"We're not learning how to defend ourselves. We're not learning how to pass our OWLs. She's taking over the entire school!"
"Calm down, Lion." Y/N sighed, pulling her onto his lap.
She crossed her arms but melted into his arms nonetheless.
"Why's he here again?" Ron complained, watching the couple.
"Cause I'm hot and you're not." Y/N poked his tongue out at him.
"Besides, obviously they like me better than you."
"Y-/-N." Hermione scolded, sounding out each part of his name.
"Her-mi-o-ne." Y/N copied her, pressing kisses onto her cheek.
"It's not like I was lying."
Ron groaned, turning away from the couple to listen to the radio.
"Security has been and will remain the Ministry's top priority." Fudge's voice came out of the radio.
Hermione got up from Y/N's lap to listen closer as he and Ron simply leaned on the couch.
"Furthermore, we have convincing evidence that these disappearances are the work of notorious mass murderer, Sirius Black."
"Y/N if you know anything about the Death Ea-" Harry quickly turned his attention to the blue-eyed boy, hoping for any piece of information that would save his godfather.
"Harry that's completely insensitive!" Hermione cut him off, quick to defend her boyfriend.
"Harry!" The fireplace spoke, cutting off the fight that was about to break out.
"Sirius!" Harry called out, instantly getting out of his chair to speak to him.
"You alright?" Hermione walked over to Y/N who's expression had turned dark.
Y/N nodded, forcing a soft smile at the woman he loved dearly. She leaned down, placing a gentle kiss onto his lips before returning to her seat on his lap.
It wasn't easy being a Death Eater's son and being friends with Harry.
"What are you doing here?" Harry spoke to the blazing fire that took shape of Sirius's face.
"Answering your letter." Sirius replied.
"You said you were worried about Umbridge. What's she doing? Training you to kill half-breeds?"
"Sirius, she's not letting us use magic at all." Harry complained.
"Well, I'm not surprised." Sirius sighed.
"The latest intelligence is that Fudge doesn't want you trained in combat."
"Combat?" Ron questioned.
"What does he think, we're forming some sort of wizard army?"
"That's exactly what he thinks." Sirius confirmed.
"That Dumbledore is assembling his own forces to take on the Ministry."
"Is he mad?" Y/N spat, leaning his chin onto Hermione's shoulder to see the man in the fire.
"He's becoming more and more paranoid by the minute." Sirius informed.
"The others wouldn't want me telling you this, Harry... but things aren't going at all well with the Order. Fudge is blocking the truth at every turn and these disappearances are just how it started before. Voldemort is on the move."
"Well, what can we do?" Harry questioned, wanting to be useful.
"Someone's coming. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. But for now, at least, it looks like you're on your own." Sirius quickly disappeared.
Thunder roared as rain began to fall hastily from the sky. Hermione got up, deep in thought and began to stare out the window, the three boys following behind her.
"He really is out there, isn't he?" She questioned them, staring tensely out the window.
"We've got to be able to defend ourselves."
"Oh no. I know that look." Y/N gulped, staring at his girlfriend.
He was about to be dragged into another event by the heroic Gryffindor's.
"Y/N. If Umbridge refuses to teach us how, we need someone who will." Hermione turned to face him, taking his hands into hers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"This is mad. Who'd wanna be taught by us?!" Harry exclaimed as the golden quartet made their way to the Hog's Head, heavily dressed in warm clothing.
"I'm a nutter, remember? And I'm pretty sure no one else can do Y/N's spells from his book."
"Y/N's got the popularity. I'm sure plenty of people would want to learn from him." Hermione explained, staring at the boy who walked ahead of them.
"Plenty of girls." Ron scoffed with jealousy.
"Look on the bright side: you can't be any worse than old toad face. And besides, though I hate to admit it, Y/N's brilliant at general spells." Ron tried to reassure.
"Thanks, Ron." Harry said sarcastically.
"I'm here for you, mate." Ron replied softly.
"Gonna be honest, it's not very hard to be better than her." Y/N chuckled, teasing him.
"Well, that's very encouraging." Harry frowned.
"Y/N." Hermione said before kicking him on the back on the knee only to miss as he ran away.
"Not today, Granger!" Y/N chuckled before slipping on the cold snow.
The other three laughed at him, making his face go bright red.
"You lovable idiot." Hermione giggled, helping him up to his feet.
"You love me?" Y/N said dramatically, pressing his hand to his heart.
"Of course I do." Hermione smiled, giving him a quick kiss before leading them towards the building.
"Who's supposed to be meeting us, then?" Harry questioned, following the confident brunette.
"Just a couple of people." Hermione replied, opening the door.
The building was small and cramped yet cozy and warm. Inside was an old man and a few goats.
"Lovely spot." Ron muttered sarcastically.
"Thought it would be safe off the beaten track." Hermione explained before walking in.
The three made their way into a private area where the others slowly filled up the room in front of them. Y/N, Hermione and Harry were sat at the front of the group on stools.
"I'll take that for you, love." Y/N whispered, taking her coat and hanging it before returning and standing next to her.
The students eventually all arrived, placing the quartet in a bit of an awkward spot. The students consisted of Neville, Ginny, Luna, Cho, Fred and George and a few other students Y/N couldn't name.
"Uhm... hi." Hermione was the first to speak up in front of the many stares.
"So... you all know why we're here. We need a teacher... A proper teacher. One who's had real experience defending themselves against the Dark Arts."
"Why?" A blonde boy spat out.
"Why? Because You-Know-Who's back, you tosspot." Ron glared at him.
"So he says." The blonde boy argued.
"So Dumbledore says." Hermione corrected him.
"So Dumbledore says because he says." The boy continued to argue.
"Sorry but who are you again?" Y/N questioned the boy who seemed to have all the confidence you could have.
"Y/N." Hermione stared at her boyfriend, shaking her head.
"Listen, if Potter and Malfoy could tell us more about how Diggory got killed..." Another boy spoke up from the crowd.
"We're not gonna talk about Cedric, so if that's why you're here, you might as well clear out now." Harry spat, having enough of them.
"Come on, Hermione, let's go. They're just here because they think I'm some sort of freak or just want to get close with Y/N." Harry whispered.
"Is it true you can produce a Patronus Charm?" Luna asked Harry from the back of the group.
"Yes." Hermione answered for Harry.
"Y/N and I have seen it."
"It's true." Y/N confirmed.
"Blimey, Harry. I didn't know you could do that." Dean said in surprise.
"A-And he killed a basilisk together with Y/N. With the sword in Dumbledore's office!" Neville backed them up.
"It's true." Ginny smiled.
"Third year, Harry fought off about a hundred Dementors at once." Ron added.
"And last year, he and Y/N really did fight off You-Know-Who in the flesh." Hermione finished.
"Wait-" Harry spoke up hastily.
"Look, it all sounds great when you say it like that... but the truth is, most of that was just luck. I didn't know what I was doing half of the time. I nearly always had help from Y/N and Hermione."
"Harry, you're really not helping yourself here." Y/N sighed, crossing his arms.
"Now's not really the time to be modest."
"Facing this stuff in real life is not like school, Y/N. You and I know that better than anyone." Harry argued.
"In school, if you make a mistake, you can just try again tomorrow. But out there... when you're a second away from being murdered... or watching a friend die right before your eyes. You don't know what that's like." He explained to the other students.
"You're right, Harry, we don't." Hermione agreed, sitting back onto her seat.
"That's why we need both of your help. Because if we're going to have any chance at beating..."
Y/N took her hand into his, giving her as much courage as she needed. She smiled at him before continuing.
"...Voldemort..."
"He's really back." A first year student finally understood.
The students finally acknowledged Y/N and Harry's skill, signing their names to join the group. Of course, Hermione, Y/N, Ron and Harry were the first to sign their names.
"Are you sure we should be allowing first years to join?" Y/N questioned out of pure concern.
"What's this? The great Y/N Malfoy actually feels worry for others?" Ron teased, elbowing him playfully.
"...No..." Y/N tried to deny.
