Chapter Six: Petrified

"It was Hagrid. Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets 50 years ago." Harry admitted to the other three as they walked through the courtyard.

It was a cold day, all four of them had their robes on along with their scarves, carrying bags and books on their way out of class.

"It can't be Hagrid. It just can't be." Hermione defended their friend.

"We don't even know this Tom Riddle. He sounds like a dirty, rotten snitch to me." Ron exclaimed, hugging his books to his chest.

"So... like you?" Y/N teased, shoving some of his books into his enchanted messenger bag.

"The monster had killed somebody, Ron. What would any of us have done?" Harry argued, stopping in his tracks.

"Look, Hagrid's our friend. Why don't we just go and ask him about it?" Hermione suggested, being the quartet's peacemaker.

"Seems like only Hermione's got a sense of loyalty between you three Gryffindor's." Y/N chimed, shoving his hands into his pockets, forgetting his gloves on his bed.

"That would be a cheerful visit. 'Hello, Hagrid. Tell us, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?'" Ron sarcastically rolled his eyes at the girl's idea.

"Mad and hair?" Hagrid's voice came from behind them, making the quartet jump at his appearance.

"You wouldn't be talking about me, now, would you?"

"No!" They all replied in sync with the tone of a small child denying that they had eaten the last cookie from the jar.

"What's that you've got, Hagrid?" Harry prevented the awkward silence by showing interest towards the item Hagrid held.

"Oh, it's uh- Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent. For the Mandrakes, you know." Hagrid replied, showing them the green watering can.

"Now, according to Professor Sprout, they've still got a bit of growing up to do. But once their acne's cleared up, we'll be able to chop them up and stew them and then we'll get those people down at the hospital un-Petrified."

The quartet nodded, worried about the Petrified students.

"In the meantime, though, you four... had best be looking after yourselves. Alright?"

They nodded once more before Harry left to tend to the Mandrakes.

"Do you really believe it's him?" Y/N watched the gentle giant walk away, greeting Neville who ran fast towards the quartet.

"Harry, I don't know who did it, but you'd better come." Neville said frantically, doing his best to catch his breath.

"Come on!" Neville took off once more.

The confused quartet quickly took off after him who lead the into the Gryffindor common room, dragging Y/N in along with them, making sure to cover his ears when they said the password. Upon entering the boy's dorm they saw Harry's belongings trashed, all over the floor.

"Well. I knew the Gryffindor common room's were much messier compared to Slytherin's but I didn't expect this." Y/N muttered, making Hermione nudge him slightly as Harry went to investigate his trashed items.

"It had to be a Gryffindor. Nobody else knows our password." Hermione said, watching Harry rummage through his books.

"Unless it wasn't a student."

"Whoever it was, they must have been looking for something." Ron added, staring at the feathers that had now been taken out of Harry's pillows.

"And they found it." Harry spoke up.

"Tom Riddle's diary is gone."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Y/N sat next to Hermione in the big library with a scatter of books on their table as they researched about clues on the Chamber.

"Why do you three try so hard to 'save the school'? You do know that's our Professor's jobs right?" Y/N yawned, leaning his cheek into his hand, propped up on the table as he flipped through a book.

"If you're so against it, why do you help us?" Hermione asked him, also flipping through her book.

Y/N went quiet, thinking hard.

"Hmm... Why do I help you three...?" Y/N mumbled to himself, his eyes threatening to close.

Hermione's eye drifted from her book to Y/N who looked more tired than her. The two of them spent most of their free time together, searching through the library about anything that could help them about the chambers. Y/N seemed to be lost in thought which gave Hermione the time to study his features properly. Though Y/N and Draco were twins, Y/N was considerably more handsome, perhaps taking after their mother. He had long eyelashes and sparkling blue eyes. His blonde hair was pale yet was darker than Draco's almost-white hair, it seemed to shine in the light but was soft, free and slightly wavy compared to Draco's straight, slicked back hair. Hermione wondered what it would feel like to run her hands through them.

"I guess it's because I wanted to be different." Y/N spoke up after a long silence, snapping Hermione out of her thoughts.

"Different?" Hermione questioned him, turning her attention back to her book.

"My brother and I were born twins after all. Don't get me wrong, of course I'm much smarter and handsome than him but he's not a loser either. My brother is great with spells." Y/N said lazily, multi-tasking with speaking and reading.

"I guess I was tired of following my father's strict rules. I wanted to see the world for myself and decide my own view-points instead of being told them. My brother is a suck-up though, he wouldn't miss a chance to show my father how much he was like him. I hope that one day, he'll learn that he could live for himself and not for my father."

Hermione hummed a response. Perhaps Y/N was so cocky and a bit of an ass for a reason. He was a good person at heart, and he was trying his best.

"I'll be right back, Granger. Gotta take a leak." Y/N said, standing up from his seat.

Y/N did just that, taking about 10 minutes due to the nearest bathroom being quite far and being stopped by multiple students greeting him. What a pain it was to be popular.

When Y/N returned, the library was crowded with students. Y/N instantly felt something was wrong, his pace quickened as he pushed through the students to see Hermione, frozen and being escorted on a stretcher.

"Hermione!" Y/N called out, running to her side.

"What happened?!" Y/N asked Professor McGonagall who had arrived before him.

"I don't know, one of the students found her in the library like this." She replied, helping move the carrier.

"It's all my fault, if I hadn't left her alone I-" Y/N started blaming himself at what happened to his best friend.

"Please, calm down, Mr. Malfoy. She will be okay." Professor McGonagall tried her best to soothe Y/N all the way to the hospital.

"She was found with this." She gave him a small mirror that looked as if Hermione held it until she was Petrified.

Y/N blocked out all the noise, hearing only a ringing in his ears as he walked through the halls towards the hospital, his eyes locked onto Hermione's frozen ones. He could only stand in shock when they reached the hospital as the adults began to transport her onto a bed. There's no way he'd lose the only person who he could compete with like this. He refused to believe it. But due to Draco's constant teasing that Hermione could be a Muggle-born that would die and how Draco would hope Hermione would be the one to die to him always being with her, he couldn't help but worry.

"I'm afraid all you can do is wait until we have the medicine ready, Mr. Malfoy." Madam Pomfrey snapped him out of his thoughts, pulling out a chair for him as McGonagall left to get Harry and Ron.

Y/N nodded before taking a seat and staring at Hermione once more before reaching out for her hand.

"Please, if- when she wakes up. Don't tell her I was the one here." Y/N said, embarrassed of how she'd tease him for being so worried.

"I will try not to forget." She said before walking away to tend to the other students.

"Please don't die, Granger." Y/N pleaded, clutching her cold hand tight.

"Who else am I supposed to tease? Who else could I call my best friend and rival?"

Y/N stayed in the same position until Harry and Ron arrived to which he immediately retrieved his hand.

"What happened?!" Harry exclaimed, running towards Hermione.

"We were at the library and then I left to go to the bathroom. She was like this when I returned, no one saw what happened." Y/N explained, his eyes not leaving her, as if she'd disappear the moment he looked away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Y/N." Harry and Ron's heads peaked out of Harry's invisibility cloak.

The three of them had planned on going to Hagrid's outside of curfew which meant they had to be sneaking around. Y/N used Kai to sneak out while Harry and Ron used the cloak.

They quietly made their way to Hagrid's, Y/N under the cloak with them now, knocking on the door as soon as they got there.

"Who's there?" They heard Hagrid question them from inside.

Hagrid opened the door, holding his crossbow ready but saw no one due to the boys being under the cloak.

"Hello?" Hagrid called out once more before the boys revealed themselves.

"What's that for?" Harry questioned the crossbow.

"Nothing. I was expecting..." Hagrid stuttered, putting down his weapon.

"It doesn't matter. Come on in. I just made a pot of tea."

The boys did so, walking into the hut and watching Hagrid pour them a cup of tea along with plates of fruit cake. Hagrid's hands were shaking terribly, making the boys worried.

"Hagrid, are you okay?" Harry asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I'm fine. I'm alright." Hagrid said, nodding.

"Did you hear about Hermione?" Y/N asked, tilting his head.

"Oh yeah. I heard about that, alright." Hagrid responded.

"Look, we have to ask you something." Harry went straight to the point.

"Do you know who's opened the Chamber of Secrets?"

Hagrid fell silent, his gaze avoiding theirs.

"What you had to understand about that is-" Hagrid was cut off by a loud knock on the door.

"Quick, under the cloak."

The boys did so, hiding under the cloak as Hagrid opened the door.

"Professor Dumbledore, sir." He greeted.

"Good evening, Hagrid. I wonder... could we...?" Dumbledore replied, ushering his companion.

"Of course. Come in. Come in." Hagrid welcomed them in.

"That's dad's boss!" Ron whispered.

Y/N recognized him as well.

"Cornelius Fudge, Minister of Magic." Y/N told Harry, watching him through the cloak.

"Bad business, Hagrid, very bad business. Had to come." Fudge said, walking inside the hut.

"Three attacks on Muggle-born's. Things have gone far enough. The Ministry's got to act."

"But I-I never-" Hagrid stuttered at their accusation.

"You know I never, Professor."

"I want it understood, Cornelius... that Hagrid... has my full confidence." Dumbledore defended the half-giant.

"Albus, look, Hagrid's record is against him." Fudge shook his head.

"I've got to take him."

"Take me?" Hagrid asked in shock.

"Take me where? Not Azkaban prison."

"I'm afraid we have no choice, Hagrid." Fudge sighed as another person entered the hut.

"Already here, Fudge?" Y/N could recognize that voice from anywhere.

"What's my father doing here?" Y/N mumbled, watching his dad stride in confidently.

"What are you doing here? Get out of my house!" Hagrid exclaimed upon seeing the familiar man.

"Believe me... I take absolutely no pleasure being inside your..." He trailed off, standing close to the trio making them shuffle back.

"You call this a house?" He muttered, look around the small hut.

"No. I simply called up the school and was told the headmaster was here."

"Well, what exactly is it that you want with me?" Dumbledore questioned Lucius.

"The other governors and I have decided it's time for you to step aside." Lucius explained, his voice was filled with pride and confidence.

"This is an order of suspension." He walked towards Dumbledore with a scroll.

"You'll find all 12 signatures on it. I'm afraid we feel you've rather lost your touch. Well, what, with all these attacks... there'll be no Muggle-borns left at Hogwarts. and As you may know I have a son that is rather close with one, unfortunately, and I'm afraid he'd be rather... upset... if he heard about that, I am simply doing what a father can and of course that would be an awful loss to the school."

"He's using me as a reason to get his way now?" Y/N whispered under his breath angrily.

"You can't take Professor Dumbledore away." Hagrid stood up for him.

"Take him away and all the Muggle-borns won't stand a chance! You mark my words, there'll be killings next!"

"You think so?" Lucius asked rather calmly.

"Calm yourself, Hagrid." Dumbledore said.

"If the governors desire my removal... I will, of course, step aside. However..." Dumbledore walked up to Y/N's father.

"...you will find that help will always be given at Hogwarts... to those who... ask for it."

He looked towards the three boys as if he could see them through the cloak, making Lucius follow his gaze to see nothing, confusing him a lot.

"Admirable sentiments." Lucius cleared his throat.

"Shall we?" He escorted them out after Dumbledore looked at the boys once more.

"Come, Hagrid." Fudge motioned for Hagrid to follow him out as well.

"If uh-" Hagrid cleared his throat.

"If anybody was looking for some stuff... then all they'd have to do would be to follow the spiders. Yep. That would lead them right. That's all I have to say."

Hagrid then left the room much to the confusion of Fudge. The boys heard the door click and they immediately took the cloak off, breathing heavily.

"Hagrid's right." Ron said.

"With Dumbledore gone, there'll be an attack a day."

"Look." Harry whispered, pointing towards many spiders, crawling out of the window.

"Come on."

Harry lifted one of the lamps before opening the door.

"Let's go, Fang." Y/N called out to the dog, worried about him since Hagrid would be gone for a while.

They looked towards the spiders scurrying down the window and into the Forbidden Forest.

"Come on." Harry pulled Y/N by the sleeve.

"What?" Ron spat, afraid of even going near the spiders.

"You heard what Hagrid said. 'Follow the spiders.'" Harry repeated.

"They're headed to the Dark Forest!" Ron exclaimed, his voice cracking with every word.

"You scared, Weasley?" Y/N teased with a smirk before walking off first.

"Why spiders? Why couldn't it be 'follow the butterflies'?" Ron whined behind him.

The trio followed the spiders deep into the forest which was misty, cold and dark. Fang lead them along with Y/N then Harry and Ron behind.

"I don't like this." Ron complained, trying not to squash the spiders.

"I don't like this at all!"

"Quiet, Ronald." Y/N shushed him as they followed the spiders into a cave.

"Can we go back now?" Ron cried, looking at all the spiders.

"Come on." Harry followed Fang and Y/N in.

The cave lead to another opening with giant trees and huge spider webs all around. Y/N could have sworn he saw a giant spider dash through the trees.

"Walk behind me, Fang." Y/N instructed as he walked through the trees, stopping when they heard a voice.

"Who is it?" The voice asked.

Fang barked at the earie voice followed by loud thumps.

"Don't panic." Harry whispered.

"Hagrid?" The voice questioned followed by another thump.

"Is that you?"

"We're friends of Hagrid's." Harry replied.

A giant spider, far bigger than all three of the boys combined emerged from a tree, stopping a few meters in front of them making Ron more scared.

"And you? You're Aragog, aren't you?" Harry recognized him from Hagrid's stories.

"Yes. Hagrid has never sent men into our hollow before." Aragog answered, staring at the three boys and fang.

"He's in trouble. Up at the school, there have been attacks." Harry explained.

"They think it's Hagrid. They think he opened the Chamber of Secrets. Like before."

Y/N felt Ron tug at his sleeve. He followed the red-head's gaze to see many large spiders, though smaller than Aragog, crawling around them, surrounding them.

"Harry something feels off." Y/N whispered but Harry chose to ignore him.

"That's a lie." Aragog hissed.

"Hagrid never opened the Chamber of Secrets."

"Then you're not the monster?" Harry questioned him.

"No." Aragog said.

"The monster was born in the castle. I came to Hagrid from a distant land in the pocket of a traveler."

Y/N slowly pulled his wand out of his pocket, looking around him to see more spiders emerging.

"Y/N." Ron whined, inching closer to him.

"I know." Y/N shushed him, clutching his wand behind his back.

"But if you're not the monster, then what did kill that girl 50 years ago?" Harry continued conversing with Aragog.

"We do not speak of it!" Aragog exclaimed, refusing to give them more information.

"It is an ancient creature we spiders fear above all others."

"But have you seen it?" Harry pressed on.

"Harry." Y/N said sternly but Harry ignored him once more.

"I never saw any part of the castle but the box in which Hagrid kept me." Aragog explained.

"The girl was discovered in a bathroom. When I was accused, Hagrid brought me here."

"Harry." Ron whimpered, finally gaining Harry's attention.

"What?!" Harry spat out, annoyed.

Ron shakily pointed to the spiders that surrounded them, making Harry look up at the spiders that lowered from the trees.

"Well, thank you." Harry cleared his throat, looking back towards Aragog.

"We'll just go."

"Go?" Aragog scoffed.

"I think not! My sons and daughters do not harm Hagrid on my command. But I cannot deny them fresh meat when it wanders so willingly into our midst. Goodbye, friends of Hagrid."

The spiders instantly surrounded them, dropping from the ceiling as Y/N stretched his arms, cracking his neck before taking a stance.

"You know, I've been waiting to put my book's spells to use." Y/N muttered before aiming his wand at the spiders.

"Know any spells for all of them?" Ron whimpered as the trio stood back-to-back.

"None that can take out all of them yet, but I can clear out a way." Y/N replied before standing forward.

"Follow me."

Y/N instantly started firing many small, blue fireballs at the spiders in front of him, clearing a small path.

"Caeruleae Portae!" Y/N casted making two long walls of blue flames appear in front of them.

Y/N quickly ran through before doing a combat roll forwards, turning into a ball of what seemed to be electricity for about three seconds, going at great speed towards the end of the walls where more spiders stood.

Without an incantation, Y/N raised his wand high in the air as lightning struck his wand before waving it down at the spiders in their way causing a large lightning strike to fall from the sky, obliterating the spiders.

"Come on!" Y/N waited for the other two to catch up when Ron's family car appeared in front of them.

The door opened it's doors to reveal no driver.

"Let's go!" Ron said, hopping into the front seat.

"Come on, Fang!" Y/N helped the black dog into the backs seat with him.

"Drive!" Y/N yelled when all of them were seated.

Ron started driving backwards, away from the spiders but making them fall down a small hill, making the three boys scream.

"Glad we're out of there." Ron sighed in relief as they landed on the ground softly.

Suddenly a spider appeared next to Ron, grabbing hold of him. Y/N instantly brought his wand back out, casting a spell onto the spider, making it die with blue flames once more.

"Thanks for that." Ron gasped.

"No problem, Ronald." Y/N panted, all of those new spells had taken a toll on him.

"Your new spells were wicked." Ron complimented, making Y/N smile proudly.

The three squinted at the hill to see that the spiders had followed them.

"Drive, Ron!" Y/N yelled making him drive off as they screamed.

They drove through the woods with the many spiders chasing after them at great speed as Ron tried to make the car fly.

"The flying gear's jammed!" Ron exclaimed.

"Pull harder!" Harry yelled, placing his hand onto Ron's to help him.

The quartet were finally in the air, driving through the trees and landing with a loud thud in front of Hagrid's place.

"I think I'm going to be sick." Y/N wobbled out of the car, letting Fang out along with him.

"Follow the spiders. Follow the spiders?!" Ron yelled, walking out too.

"If Hagrid ever gets out of Azkaban, I'll kill him!"

"As if you could with those skills of yours." Y/N said, patting Fang.

Their argument was cut short when they heard the car starting once more. They watched as it drove off on it's own, wobbly due to the damage it had sustained.

"I mean, what was the point of sending us in there? What have we found out?" Ron complained.

"If you were listening, Ronald. Hagrid never opened the Chamber of Secrets." Y/N explained to him, letting Fang back into Hagrid's hut.

"He was innocent." Harry added.
