Chapter Four: Realizations

"I can't believe we're so late this time!" Hermione yelled as she and Y/N ran through the halls to get to class.

Y/N and Hermione had tried to make sure they ended up where they left with the Time-Turner every chance they could (though not always achieving it) but this time they were very late, about 5 minutes late. It wasn't their fault the Time-Turner could only go in intervals of 60 minutes but they could have turned the time earlier.

Y/N clicked his tongue, taking a quick sprint to grab Hermione's hand.

"Come on, I know a shortcut." Y/N said, leading her through the hallways.

It wasn't a surprise Y/N knew the short cuts of Hogwarts. He was in Slytherin and his friends were in Gryffindor, leading him to have a lot of time for himself to explore and to avoid other students that tried to get on his good side.

Y/N pulled Hermione behind him as they cut through corners and odd passages when he felt Hermione stumble behind.

"You alright, Granger?" Y/N instantly stopped to turn around to face her.

He looked at her, his eyebrows furrowed. His hand never left her soft and warm ones as they panted in the halls. Hermione was bent down slightly, panting hard, unable to speak.

"Hermione?" Y/N spoke up once more, using his free hand to tuck her hair behind her ear.

His hand found itself onto her cheek, forcing her to look at him. It was obvious that the multiple classes were taking a toll on her.

"I'm okay." She said, standing upright.

"Clearly not." Y/N scoffed, letting go of her cheek.

"I'm fine, Y/N." She insisted, dragging him forwards.

"Hermi-" Y/N was quickly cut off by Hermione.

"I'm fine!" Hermione snapped, turning to face Y/N once more.

Y/N was taken aback by her sudden yelling but he understood. Along with classes, the two also had the homework from all the classes. Hermione must be beyond tired. Y/N was tired too but it seemed to take more of a toll on Hermione.

Y/N walked up to her, placing both his hands on her cheeks, forcing her chocolate eyes to look back into his ocean ones. Y/N leaned in closer much to Hermione's confusion. She closed her eyes, afraid of what may happen next.

"You've got bags under your eyes." Y/N said after the long silence causing Hermione to open her eyes, both of their faces pink from embarrassment.

Though Y/N wouldn't admit it, he wondered what would happen if he had leaned in closer, allowing their lips to touch.

Y/N had gotten bolder with touching Hermione and she had gotten more used to him, raising the suspicions of all the students around them but they always denied any accusations, announcing that they were strictly friends.

"I'm okay, Y/N." Hermione spoke softly, taking Y/N's hands into hers.

"Really."

Y/N went silent, his gaze falling to her shoes as she reassured him. His heart beat faster the tighter she held his hands, confirming Harry's question to him a few days back.

"Let's go to class." Y/N spoke up, letting go of one of her hands and leading her through the halls once more.

The two of them finally reached the classroom, opening the door quietly for no one to notice. Y/N let go of her hand as they both sat separately. Hermione took a seat next to Harry whilst Y/N took a seat next to Draco, being the only empty seats near their friends.

"Where did you come from and why are you so tired?" Draco whispered, raising an eyebrow at his brother, a bit surprised at his sudden appearance.

Y/N quickly got his book out, placing them on the table.

"Page 394." Draco said, turning his brother's page for him.

"Thanks." Y/N muttered, taking a quick look at Hermione before turning his pages.

"Y/N?" Draco questioned again, gaining the attention of his brother.

Y/N hummed out a response as he watched Snape walk to his spot behind the class.

"Why do you sometimes appear in class all exhausted and panting?"

"Uh- Exercise." Y/N stuttered, McGonagall made them promise not to tell anyone about the Time-Turner.

"With Granger?" Draco chuckled, placing a hand on his cheek.

"Don't tell me you're doing that with the Mudbloo-"

Y/N cut Draco off by placing his hands over his mouth.

"Shut it." Y/N spat, his face a bright shade of red.

"Don't tell me it's true-" Draco spoke as soon as Y/N let go.

"No, of course not!" Y/N whisper-shouted, trying to calm himself.

"Dear brother, though I don't like the Mudblood, you can tell me about your love life-" Draco teased once more.

"Pay attention to class, Draco." Y/N huffed, turning to look at Hermione.

Draco teased Y/N more but Y/N tuned him out, only studying Hermione who sat across from him. If somebody told him back in his first year that he'd someday have a crush on Hermione, let alone be best friends with her, he'd think they were crazy and offer to pay for the mental hospital.

"What is it, Y/N?" Hermione whispered across to him, noticing his stare.

Y/N was startled but kept his cool, resting his head on his hand as he continued to look at her.

"Nothing, you really just look like a Lion." Y/N chuckled, watching her get her book out.

"'Werewolves'?!" Ron's voice cut their conversation short.

"But Sir, we've just begun learning about red caps and hinkypunks." Hermione instantly snapped her attention towards the Professor.

"We're not meant to start that for weeks."

"Quiet." Snape scolded before walking down to the front of the class.

"Now, which one of you can tell me the difference between an Animagus and a werewolf?"

Hermione's hand shot up, making Y/N chuckle lightly.

"No one?" Snape said, ignoring Hermione.

"How disappointing."

"Please, sir." Hermione spoke up although not being called on.

"An Animagus is a wizard who elects to turn into an animal. A werewolf has no choice."

Y/N had a smug look on his face as if saying 'that's my girl'. Draco noticed this, giggling at his brother earning himself a light punch on the shoulder.

"With each full moon when he transforms, he no longer remembers who he is. He'd kill his best friend if he crossed his path. Furthermore, the werewolf only responds to the call of it's own kind." She finished.

"Awooo!" Draco howled, making Y/N chuckle.

"Thank you, Mr. Malfoy. That is the second time you've spoken out of turn, Miss Granger." Snape scolded unfairly.

"Are you incapable of restraining yourself or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?" He spat.

"Five points from Gryffindor."

"He's got a point, you know." Ron whispered.

Y/N hated the way his heart seemed to feel heavy when he saw the sad expression on Hermione's face due to Snape's scolding, instantly he started scribbled something on a piece of paper before folding it into a paper crane and blowing on it off his hands, making it fly to Hermione. Draco did the same but blew one to Harry, raising Y/N's suspicions but he decided not to question it.

"As an antidote to your ignorance, and on my desk, by Monday morning... two rolls of parchment on the werewolf, with particular emphasis on recognizing it." Snape said, making the students groan.

"Sir, it's Quidditch tomorrow!" Harry argued with Snape.

"Then I suggest you take extra care, Mr. Potter. Loss of limb will not excuse you. Page 394." Snape leaned in close to him.

"The term 'werewolf' is a contraction of the Anglo-Saxon word 'wer'... which means "man," and "wolf.". Werewolf, man-wolf."

Y/N watched as Hermione read his note. At first she had a serious expression due to Snape's mean behavior towards her but as she read Y/N's note, she couldn't help but smile softly at it. Y/N felt flutters in his stomach at the sight, forming a smile of his own.

All Y/N wrote on the note was 'Don't mind it.' along with a moving drawing of a Lion biting Snape's bottom. Y/N was proud of himself to be able to make his best friend stifle a laugh.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a stormy, rainy day as the Gryffindor's played against Hufflepuff. The teams had to wear goggles to protect their eyes from the falling raindrops.

"Go Harry!" Hermione cheered loudly, making Y/N's eardrums ring.

Y/N wanted to sit with Draco and his Slytherin friends but Hermione had dragged him along to where the Gryffindor's watched. Y/N noticed Hermione slightly shivering from the cold storm even though she had a raincoat on. He quickly took off his own, wrapping it around her. Y/N chuckled, she looked like a Slytherin now with the green raincoat.

"Aren't you cold?" Hermione questioned him, trying to return his raincoat.

Y/N shook his head, smiling softly at her as he wrapped the coat around her once again.

"Green suits you, Lion." Y/N laughed as she sneezed.

They watched Harry as he dodged a student that's broom seemed to be on fire. Harry then disappeared into the clouds, along with the Hufflepuff seeker.

"I hope he's alright." Hermione whispered since Harry had been in the cloud for a minutes now, even after the Hufflepuff student had returned.

"He's falling!" Y/N yelled, squinting to see Harry fall down without his broom.

"Aresto momentum!" Dumbledore casted, making Harry's fall slow down.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"He looks a bit peaky, doesn't he?" Ron whispered.

"Peaky? What do you expect? He fell over 100 feet." Fred Weasley scoffed.

"Yeah, come on, Ron. Let's walk you off a tower and see what you look like." George added, defending Harry while he was passed out.

A few Gryffindor students, along with Hermione, Ron and Y/N crowded Harry around the hospital bed, worried about him.

"Probably a right sight better than he normally does." Harry mumbled, finally regaining consciousness.

"How are you feeling?" Hermione questioned him, taking a seat on the bed.

"Oh, brilliant." Harry laughed.

"You gave us a right good scare there, mate." Fred said, moving around to Harry's side.

"What happened?" Harry asked, taking his glasses from Y/N and putting them on.

"Well, you fell off your broom." Ron explained the obvious.

"Really? I meant the match." Harry snapped sarcastically.

"Who won?"

They went silent as Hermione stood up, stuttering as she tried to find the right words.

"No one blames you, Harry-" She said.

"Hufflepuff won." Y/N cut her off.

Hermione elbowed him due to his straightforwardness.

"The Dementors aren't supposed to be on the grounds. Dumbledore's furious." She continued explaining what had happened.

"After he saved you, he sent them straight off."

"There's uh- something else you should know too, Harry uhm-" Ron finally spoke up.

Ron clutched something wrapped in a Gryffindor themed cloth.

"When you fell, your broom sort of blew into the Whomping Willow, and-"

"It got absolutely wrecked." Y/N continued for him, being the only one to be straight forward with Harry.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Well, well. Look who's here." Draco called out to Hermione and Ron who looked out to the shrieking-shack.

Y/N followed behind Draco, having spent the time shopping with him and a few of their friends. Now it was only him, Draco, Crabbe and Goyle who walked around.

"You two shopping for your new dream home?"

"Leave them alone, Draco." Y/N defended, shoving his brother softly as they walked down the snow covered hill.

"Y/N!" Draco yelled, slipping on the soft snow and landing on his bottom.

Y/N poked out his tongue and placed his hands into the pockets of his parka before skipping over to Hermione, hiding behind her, making her and Ron giggle.

"Oops." Y/N said innocently, poking his tongue out at Draco who had gotten up and made his way closer to the group.

"What are you laughing at, Weasle-bee? Even that house is a bit grand for you, isn't it? Don't your family sleep in one room?" Draco glared at Y/N who had his hands on Hermione's shoulders, peeking his head next to hers.

"Shut your mouth, Malfoy." Ron growled at Draco.

"Not very friendly. I'm not even sure why you choose to hang out with a beggar and a Mudblood, Y/N." Draco scowled.

Y/N walked next to Hermione, dusting the snow off his hair.

"Draco, I thought we've gone over this." Y/N confronted, placing his hands back into his pockets.

Y/N refused to wear gloves and a beanie, thinking it wasn't very fashionable. Y/N had a great fashion taste for his age, managing to amplify his already handsome natural looks.

"Boys, I think it's time we teach Weasle-Bee how to respect his superiors." Draco said, pulling his coat tighter around him, afraid of teasing Hermione further.

"Hope you don't mean yourself." Hermione laughed, defending Ron.

"How dare you talk to me! Y/N you should keep your filthy little Mudblood on a leash!" Draco insulted.

Y/N was about to confront Draco directly to defend his best friend when a snowball came out of nowhere, hitting Draco in the face.

"Who was that?!" Draco yelled out, clearly a bit shaken up.

They all squinted to where the snowball had come from only to see no one there when another snowball flew at Draco. Y/N chuckled at the scene, already guessing who had done it. Harry did seem to be extremely determined to go to Hogsmeade.

"Don't stand there! Do something!" Draco yelled at his friends.

"What?!" Crabbe yelled back as his beanie got pulled over, covering his eyes.

Goyle's pants were pulled down too with no one there.

Hermione chuckled along with Y/N, watching the other boys get toyed with and flipped around. The invisible Harry then pulled Draco by the legs down a hill, making him terrified. Draco instantly stood up when Harry had let go of him, running back up the hill he had originally arrived from, pushing through his friends.

Y/N's laughter died down, instead he looked towards Hermione who was laughing hard at Draco's karma. He felt a smile tug at his lips as his eyes sparkled, his overall expression softening at the sight of her. He had finally come to admit that it was not some simple crush that would fade easily. He, Y/N Malfoy, had finally fallen for Hermione Granger, the very girl that he had called ugly every chance he could, the very girl he had sworn to be his rival for all his life. For the first time in his life, Y/N had felt complete and utter defeat due to Hermione capturing his heart.

Y/N didn't know what to do, he didn't know what he could do. If he had come out to tell her he had fallen for her, Draco would only torment her more, feeling that she isn't good enough for his brother. And perhaps the girls that had a crush on Y/N would also bully her, making his situation more difficult.

"Harry!" Hermione chuckled, snapping Y/N out of his thoughts.

Harry emerged from his invisibility cloak, dying of laughter.

"Bloody hell, Harry." Ron cursed, being the only one not the catch on.

"That was not funny."

"Pee your pants, Ronald?" Y/N teased the boy, laughing along with Harry and Hermione.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Those Weasels! Never told me about any Marauder's map." Ron spat after having heard about how Harry had gone to Hogsmeade.

"He won't keep it. He's going to turn it over to Professor McGonagall." Hermione answered for Harry, finally returning to her strict self.

"Aren't you?"

"Oh, sure. Along with his Invisibility Cloak." Ron scoffed.

"You're awfully quiet, Y/N."

Y/N perked up at the mention of his name. He was deep in thought, staring at Hermione as they walked along the cold, busy street.

"Just hungry." Y/N lied, avoiding eye contact.

"Oh god. What is wrong with me." Y/N whispered under his breath, now suffering the consequences of falling in love.

"Look who it is. Madam Rosmerta." Hermione spoke up, indirectly saving Y/N.

"Ron fancies her." She teased him.

"That's not true!" Ron exclaimed, trying to defend himself.

"Professor McGonagall!" Fudge called out, waving his hand as he stood on a sled.

"Cornelius!" McGonagall replied cheerfully.

"Let me help you with that, Minister." Hagrid said, opening the sled's door for him.

"Rosmerta, my dear." Fudge greeted, getting off the sled.

"I hope business is good."

"It'd be a lot better if the Ministry wasn't sending dementors into my pub every other night!" She growled, threatening him with her hammer.

"We have..." Fudge stuttered, following her as she did more work on the pub.

"We have a killer on the loose!"

"Sirius Black in Hogsmeade?!" She scoffed.

"And what would bring him here?"

Y/N pulled his hood over his head as the snow fell harder. The quartet remained eavesdropping on them. Fudge leaned into Madam Rosmerta's ear whispering something.

"Harry Potter?!" She said loudly, raising her eyebrows.

McGonagall and Fudge shushed her, pushing her into the building.

"Harry!" Hermione yelled upon seeing Harry's footsteps.

He was under the cloak again and entered the pub.

"I say no underage wizards allowed in today!" A couple of talking heads scolded Hermione as she tried to run inside.

"Shut the damn door!"

"So rude!" Hermione spat, furrowing her eyebrows.

"Calm down, Lion." Y/N pulled the girl behind him, leading her to an empty bench.

"Sit down, let's just wait for him."

Ron followed behind, taking a seat next to Hermione who was now in the middle of them. Hermione sighed, leaning her head on Y/N's shoulder as they waited. Y/N gulped, feeling his heart beat faster at the interaction.

"What is it, Granger?" Y/N spoke up, trying to calm his energetic heart.

"I'm tired." She sighed one more, leaning in closer.

Y/N looked away from her but didn't push her away. His face had gone a bright pink, using his hand to hide his blush.

"I thought you had finally fallen for me." Y/N teased though kept facing away.

Hermione went quiet. Y/N gulped before turning to look at her. Her gaze was stuck onto the snow but Y/N could see her face going red. Maybe, just maybe, she felt the same way Y/N was feeling at that moment.

"Granger?" Y/N questioned after a moment.

"As if." She answered weakly, her voice softening.

"You will always be the boy who hated me for getting a few points more than him on our tests." She chuckled lightly.

Y/N swore he felt something tug at his heart.

"Hey, that's not fair, Hermione." Y/N whined, embarrassed by his younger self.

"Uh huh." Hermione laughed.

"Wait, look!" She lifted her head from Y/N's shoulder and pointed towards footsteps forming in the snow.

Ron, who seemed to have been lost in his thoughts stood up at Hermione's words, slightly startled.

The trio quickly got up, pushing through a few people as to not lose track of Harry.

They were lead into the forest, the footsteps stopping in front of a rock, covered in a thin layer of the powdered snow. Y/N was the first to start to walk over to Harry. Hermione followed after him, slightly delayed by Ron trying to pull her back. They walked slowly and carefully, hearing Harry's soft sobbing as they grew closer.

Hermione got ahead of Y/N, kneeling down onto the soft snow, taking a deep breath before slowly uncovering Harry from the Invisibility Cloak.

Harry looked at Hermione for a split second before his gaze fell to the ground. His face was flushed pink as tears flowed down his cheeks.

"Harry, what happened?" Hermione asked softly, her voice was as gentle as a mother to a child.

"He was their friend..." Harry stuttered, his voice breaking.

"...and he betrayed them."

Y/N placed his hands on Hermione's shoulders, making her stand up from the cold snow. The two of them were confused as to who Harry was speaking about.

"He was their friend!" Harry yelled angrily.

"I hope he finds me."

Y/N realized he was talking about Sirius Black and Harry's parents. Hermione exchanged concerned looks with Hermione before turning their attention back to Harry.

"Because when he does, I'm gonna be ready! When he does, I'm gonna kill him!" Harry exclaimed.
