Chapter Five: The Trapdoor
"Why did it take you guys so long to get here?" Y/N questioned the trio as soon as they got inside the room.
"Blimey!" Ron squealed like a little girl upon Y/N's reveal.
Y/N chuckled before walking up to them, pulling down his hoodie.
"How did you get here without getting caught?"
"Quite easily." Y/N hummed before turning his attention straight to Fluffly.
"Wait a minute. He's..." Ron started.
"Snoring." Harry finished as Fang's breathing caused their hair to fly all over.
"Been like that before I got here." Y/N said, kneeling down in front of the three headed beast.
"Snape's already been here. He's put a spell on the harp." Harry whispered upon seeing the instrument.
"I doubt he'd leave evidence if it were actually him..." Y/N mumbled, still not believing it was Snape.
"Ugh... It's got horrible breath." Ron groaned, wincing as he walked towards Y/N.
"Nothing different from what I usually smell around you, Weasley." Y/N teased, getting up from his spot.
"Rude." Ron rolled his eyes.
"Right. Before you boys start another argument, we have to move it's paw." Hermione broke their fight up.
"What?" Ron scrunched up his face.
"Come on!" Harry ordered before walking up to it's huge paw.
All four of them started pushing to reveal the trap door, careful not to wake Fluffy. They were successful.
"I'll go first. Don't follow until I give you a sign." Harry said, looking into the dark hole.
"If something bad happens, get yourselves out."
"Uhm..." Y/N interrupted, staring right at Fluffy.
"The harp..."
"Ewww!" Ron groaned when Fluffy's slimey saliva fell onto his shirt.
"Right, well. It's every man for themselves now!" Y/N yelled before jumping right into the trap hole.
"Jump!" He heard Harry call out from above.
Ron screamed all the way down until he landed on some weird plant roots.
"Woah." Ron smiled.
"Lucky this plant thing's here, really."
"Woah!" Harry shouted when the plant started moving, trying itself around them.
"Stop moving!" Y/N yelled at Harry and Ron who struggled against the plant's hold, causing it to grip onto them tighter.
"This is Devil's Snare. You have to relax. If you don't, it will only kill you faster." Hermione explained, doing her best to stay calm.
"Kill us faster? Oh, now I can relax!" Ron shouted sarcastically, still struggling against the plant.
"Weasley." Y/N sighed, shaking his head.
"Right. Shall we, Granger?"
"Yeah, Malfoy." Hermione replied just as the two of them slipped through, going straight through the plant.
"Y/N! Hermione!" They heard the other two scream as they fell through.
"Now what are we gonna do?!" Ron screamed in panic.
"Just relax!" Hermione shouted from below, dusting herself off.
"Where are you guys?!" Harry yelled, trying his best to follow their orders.
"Just trust us, Harry!" Y/N shouted after standing up, fixing his collar.
"AHHH!!! HARRY!!!" Ron screamed at the top of his lungs when Harry slipped through.
"You alright?" Y/N asked Harry who was now on his bottom.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Harry groaned, accepting Y/N's outstretched hand, pulling him up.
"Help!!!" Ron cried, muffled by the plant.
"He's not relaxing, is he?" Hermione asked Harry, looking at the plant above them.
"Apparently not." Harry shook his head.
"Typical Weasley, all mouth and no head." Y/N rolled his eyes at Ron's screaming.
"We've got to help him." Hermione said over Ron's shouts.
"What?" Harry questioned in distress.
"I remember reading something in Herbology!" Hermione said, frustrated.
"You're a genius, Granger!" Y/N praised her as he pulled his wand out and pulled his sleeves down.
"Lumos Solem."
A bright light shot out of Y/N's wand, making a hole in the plant under Ron, causing him to fall down.
"Phew! Lucky we didn't panic!" Ron said, standing up and looking around the room.
"Lucky Y/N and Hermione pay attention in Herbology." Harry corrected his ginger friend.
Suddenly, a weird flapping noise was heard on the other side of the area.
"What is that?" Hermione asked, turning towards the noise.
"I don't know. Sounds like wings." Harry said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Right then, let's find out, shall we?" Y/N muttered before leading the way to the next room.
The room was decorated with pillars made of stone and weird keys with wings on them.
"Curious, I've never seen birds like these." Hermione gasped, staring at the odd keys reaching up to the tall ceiling.
"They're not birds, Granger. They're keys." Y/N chuckled, for someone so smart, she could be quite dense.
"I'll bet one of them fits that door." Harry said, looking towards a broom.
"What's this all about?" Hermione asked, staring at the floating broom.
"I don't know." Harry shrugged.
Ron pulled out his wand and walked straight to the door.
"Whatever you're going to try, it's not gonna work." Y/N mumbled, fully aware that the Professor's were much smarted than that.
"Alohomora!" Ron casted anyways but to no avail.
"Well, it was worth a try."
"What're we going to do?" Hermione made a noise of frustration, getting impatient.
"There must be a thousand keys up there!"
"We're looking for a big old fashioned one. Probably rusty like the handle." Ron explained, looking at the keyhole.
"There! I see it! The one with the broken wing." Harry pointed up above him.
"Right, well. Off you go, Harry." Y/N said, taking a seat on the cold concrete floor.
"What's wrong, Harry?" Hermione raised her eyebrows at him who simply stared at the broom.
"It's too simple." Harry muttered.
"Oh, go on, Harry! If Snape could catch it on that old broomstick, you can." Ron said, his voice raising in pitch.
"You're the youngest Seeker in a century!"
Harry reluctantly placed his hand on the broom making the keys started fluttering faster and more aggressively around the room, they then began to scatter around Harry, disabling him from flying off.
"This complicates things a bit." Ron gulped.
Y/N hummed, his mouth turning into a smile as he stood up. Now this was more interesting. Harry began to fly off with one hand, using the other to swat the keys away, he twisted and turned around the pillars until he caught the key.
"Catch the key!" Harry shouted as he threw the key at Y/N who easily caught it.
He ran to the door, unlocking it and shutting it just as Harry flew in. They entered a room filled with giant statues resembling chess pieces.
"I don't like this. I don't like this at all." Hermione whispered as they walked through the columns of statues.
"Where are we? A graveyard?" Harry questioned in a hushed tone.
"This is no graveyard." Ron whispered before walking off on his own, studying the statues.
"It's a chessboard."
The lights lit up to reveal the giant chessboard as the quartet walked to towards a door when the pawns drew their swords, blocking their path.
"Now what do we do." Hermione asked, obviously shaken up.
"It's obvious, isn't it? We've got to play our way across the room." Ron suggested, standing in front of the quartet.
"Alright. Harry, you take the empty bishop's square. Hermione, you'll be the queen-side castle. Y/N, the other castle. As for me, I'll be a knight." He smirked.
"Gryffindor's and their hero complex..." Y/N muttered under his breath as he walked towards his spot.
Ron climbed up onto the empty horse.
"What happens now?" Hermione asked, standing in one of the empty squares.
"Well, white moves first." Ron replied.
"And then... we play."
The pieces began to magically move as Ron looked around, thinking very hard.
"Ron, you don't suppose this is going to be like... real wizard's chess, do you?" Hermione gulped.
"This will be fun." Y/N grinned, staring straight in front of him.
"You there, d5." Ron instructed the pawn piece, ignoring Hermione's question.
The other pawn drew it's swords, smashing the piece Ron just moved into pieces making the quartet shiver.
"Yes, Hermione. I think this is gonna be exactly like wizard's chess." Ron gulped.
And so the battle started, with Ron instructing the pieces, causing many of the piece to destroy each other, making Hermione flinch with each loss. Y/N watched with amusement at all the destruction. Whoever's magic this was, they must have been extremely powerful.
"Wait a minute." Ron gasped, there were only a few pieces left on the board.
"You understand right, Harry. Once I make my move, the queen will take me. Then you're free to check the king."
"No. Ron, no!" Harry shouted upon realizing.
"What is it?" Hermione questioned, unaware of the situation.
"Weasley plans on sacrificing himself." Y/N answered calmly.
"No, you can't! There must be another way!" Hermione shouted, staring at Ron.
"Do you wanna stop Snape from getting that Stone or not?!" Ron shouted back, turning his head towards her.
"Harry, it's you that has to go on. I know it. Not me. Not Malfoy. Not Hermione. You."
(A/N: This line is so funny to me.)
Harry stared at him before nodding. Ron braced himself before ordering his horse to go on. The queen moved close to Ron and drew her sword, smashing Ron's horse into pieces, causing Ron to fall off the horse.
"Ron!" Harry shouted at the now-unconscious Ron.
Hermione quickly turned to run to him but was stopped by Harry.
"No, don't move! Don't forget, we're still playing."
Hermione gulped before stepping back as Harry walked towards the king, causing the king to drop his sword, showing that the game was over. They instantly ran towards Ron.
"Hermione, take care of Ron. Then go to the owlery. Send a message to Dumbledore. Ron's right. Y/N and I will go on." Harry instructed.
"You'll be okay. You're a great wizard. Both of you." Hermione reassured them.
"I'm not as good as you and Y/N." Harry sighed.
"Me? Books and cleverness. There are more important things. Friendship and bravery." Hermione chuckled.
"As for me, I'm simply the best." Y/N beamed with pride, causing Hermione to punch his arm.
"I mean, she's right. You're great, Harry." Y/N muttered, rubbing his arm.
"Be careful. Both of you." Hermione reminded them before they both stood up, walking through the next door.
Y/N and Harry walked down a cold misty staircase, it was eerily quiet with only the sound of their footsteps heard. They then came across a door, locked in an empty room.
"Well." Y/N spoke up, crossing his arms.
"We've got no clues for this one then."
Harry hummed a response before studying the door as Y/N went to lean against the wall.
"Y/N!" Harry yelled as Y/N went through the wall, with a faint thud.
He fell right through the wall and went into an odd room with a lectern in the middle, holding a book. The room was lit up with blue flames all around.
"Y/N! Are you alright?!" Y/N heard a frantic Harry through the wall faintly.
"I'm alright! I'm in a strange room!" Y/N yelled back.
"Hold on I think I see a lever!"
Y/N pulled the lever, it did nothing on his side but he heard rumbling from Harry's side.
"The door opened!" Harry shouted.
"But I can't get in with you!"
"I can't get out from this way either, I'll figure it out! You go on ahead, Harry!" Y/N yelled before turning his head towards the strangely hovering book.
"Alright! You better return alive!" Harry said.
"You too, Harry!" And with that, Harry left.
Y/N looked around the room, noticing strange writing that didn't seem to be English. They glowed on the walls with the blue flames surrounding them, seemingly floating into the book ever so often.
Without any other ideas, Y/N reached for the book. Upon grabbing it, Y/N felt himself weaken, though he did not let go of the book. It didn't hurt him, rather, it seemed to drain his energy. Y/N didn't give in to the odd feeling, fighting it instead, pulling the book towards him as the strange glowing writing seemed to flow into him.
"This has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever done." Y/N gritted his teeth, pulling as hard as he could onto the book.
Y/N finally pulled the book away from the lectern, causing him to fly across the room with a loud thud from the strength he put into it. He felt his consciousness fade before he could even open the book.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Y/N..." Someone shook him slightly.
"Hey, Y/N."
Y/N's eyes fluttered open to see that he was in the hospital wing, asleep in one of the beds. He clenched his head, groaning before looking to see the owner of the voice.
"Harry?" Y/N whispered as he sat up on the bed.
He looked down to see he was now wearing pajamas, the same that Harry wore. Harry retreated back to his bed.
"Did you do it?"
Harry smiled, nodding before speaking up.
"What was in the room?"
"A weird book. Sucked all my energy up." Y/N groaned.
"Your energy?" Harry tilted his head.
"Yeah, after I picked it up, I passed out." Y/N replied before taking a look around him.
Y/N and Harry had a lot of lollies placed on their bedside tables, though Y/N's pile seemed to have more, it must have been Draco. The door suddenly swung open, revealing Dumbledore.
"Good afternoon, Harry, Y/N." He greeted them, walking into the room.
"Tokens from your admirers?" He pointed to the bundles of sweets.
"Admirers?" Harry questioned.
Y/N was not surprised, he was very popular among his year after all.
"What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrel is a completely secret." Dumbledore started.
"So, naturally, the whole school knows. I see that your friend Ronald has saved you the trouble of opening your Chocolate Frogs."
He picked up an empty package.
"Ron was here? Is he alright?" Harry questioned upon hearing his friend's name.
"And Granger?" Y/N added, opening a packet of jelly beans.
"Fine. They're both just fine." Dumbledore replied, reassuring both boys.
"And the Stone?" Harry asked.
"Relax, dear boy." Dumbledore shushed him.
"The Stone has been destroyed. My friend Nicholas and I have had a little chat and agreed it was best all around."
"But then, Flamel, he'll die won't he?" Y/N questioned, remembering what he had read.
"He has enough Elixir to set his affairs in order." Dumbledore reassured.
"But yes, he will die."
"What about the book I found? In the room?" Y/N asked, remembering it.
"We found you on the staircase passed out, there was no book with you." Dumbledore raised an eyebrow.
Y/N's gaze fell down, thinking hard about it. Perhaps he had dropped it. He stopped listening to Harry and Dumbledore, thinking hard about the book and how strange it was. He stared at his palms, thinking about it when small blue flames appeared in his hands, materializing into the book. Y/N didn't make a noise as to not gain Dumbledore and Harry's attention. He opened the book.
"To whom this book had found itself loyal to. This contains the ancient magic." Y/N read in his head.
He flipped through the book, seeing many spells that he had never heard of before and instructions on how to learn it. The door swung open, startling Y/N, causing the book to disappear into blue flames just as it had arrived.
"Ah, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans." Dumbledore changed the subject, reaching into Harry's pile as Madam Pomfrey entered.
"I was most unfortunate in my youth to come across a vomit-flavored one. And since then, I'm afraid, I've lost my liking for them. But I think I could be safe... with a nice toffee." He reached into the box.
He grabbed one of the beans, eating one.
"Hmmm.." He shook his head slightly.
"Alas! Earwax."
Y/N and Harry chuckled as Dumbledore walked away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N and Harry were finally released from the Hospital Wing, dressed in their robes as they walked down the hall together before finally spotting Ron and Hermione.
"Alright there, Ron?" Harry smiled, stopping in his tracks.
"Alright. You?" Ron grinned.
"Alright. Hermione?" Harry shrugged before turning his head to her.
"Never better." She smiled widely.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Great Hall was filled with chatter with green banners decorating it, the Slytherin logo placed on all of them.
"You feeling better, Y/N?" Draco asked his brother with genuine concern.
"Yep!" Y/N exclaimed, patting his brother's back.
They were all quieted down by Professor McGonagall tapping her cup with her teaspoon a few times, gaining their attention. Dumbledore stood up and cleared his throat.
"Another year gone. And now, as I understand it, the house cup needs awarding. And the points stand thus: In fourth place, Gryffindor with 312 points. Third place, Hufflepuff with 352 points. Second place, Ravenclaw with 398 points."
With each house announced, everyone clapped though very disappointedly.
"And in first place... with 427 points, Slytherin house."
The Slytherin table emerged with cheer along with the other houses except for Gryffindor who slowly clapped, clearly unhappy.
"Yes, yes, well done, Slytherin. Well done, Slytherin." Dumbledore calmed them down.
"However, recent events must be taken into account. And I have a few last-minute points to award. To Miss Hermione Granger, for the cool use of intellect... while others were in grave peril... 50 points."
Everyone cheered, clapping for the small girl. The Slytherin table looked around, their smiles faded already knowing what was going to happen and it was clearly unfair.
"Second, to Mr. Ronald Weasley, for the best-played game of chess... that Hogwarts has seen these many years, 50 points. To Mr. Harry Potter... for pure nerve and outstanding courage... I award Gryffindor house 60 points. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends. I award 5 points to Neville Longbottom."
Draco gulped, now feeling absolute loss. The Gryffindor table erupted in cheer, some poking their tongues out at Slytherin table.
"And lastly!" Dumbledore added, making everyone go silent.
"To Mr. Y/N Malfoy. For breaking the stereotypes and showing absolute loyalty to his friends. He showed his resourcefulness and determination to aid them, I award 50 points to Slytherin, making the two houses tied!"
The Slytherin table cheered, with Draco engulfing his brother in a tight hug.
"Well done!" He praised him.
"Assuming that my calculations are correct, I believe that a change of decoration is in order!" Dumbledore clapped his hands, changing the banners to be half Gryffindor and half Slytherin.
"Slytherin and Gryffindor tied for the house cup!"
Everyone cheered but both houses poked their tongues out at each other upon having to share their victory.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hogwarts Express had finally arrived, ready to bring the students home.
"Come on, now. Hurry up, you'll be late." Dumbledore ushered the students.
"Train's leaving. Go on. Come on, hurry up."
Y/N handed his luggage and Kai's cage to the workers before following Harry, Hermione and Ron into the train.
They waved their goodbyes to Hagrid, Harry running up to him as the others walked in to find them a compartment.
"That one's empty." Y/N said, pulling Hermione's hood to stop her in her tracks.
"Malfoy." She growled at his way of stopping her but followed him in anyways.
"Yes, Granger?" Y/N hummed innocently before taking a seat.
"Geez, you two fight like an old couple." Ron teased them.
"As if!" Hermione instantly sat down, next to Y/N opposite Ron.
"I'd rather get eaten by a troll than get married to a Muggle-born." Y/N fake gagged, causing Hermione to smack him on the shoulder.
"You two get along well." Harry chuckled, finally walking into the compartment, taking a seat next to Ron.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the train home, Y/N had been reading the book he found, finding interesting spells he was excited to try out at his next year at Hogwarts when he felt a sudden weight on his shoulder. All his friends had fallen asleep, including Hermione who now had her head laying on his shoulder.
Y/N felt his face go pink at the interaction.
"What am I going to do with you, Granger?" Y/N whispered before turning his head back to his book.
Perhaps he should let it go for now, he'd have plenty to tease her about next year. He decided to let her rest her head on him as he read, his blush slowly fading away as he slowly dozed off himself.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A/N: That's the end of this year, everyone. Hope you enjoyed it and stay tuned for Year 2!
