Need
May 16th, 1927.
London, England. United Kingdom.
British Ministry of Magic.
Amélie found herself in her office, an office that was right beside Theseus'. It was just as big as Scamander's but it looked larger thanks to the way she had arranged it. It was tidy, with her large bookshelf on one side and windows on the opposite side, a few flower pots here and there, and pictures, as well as a small liquor station near the window.
Twenty minutes ago, she was with Theseus, taking a break from their chores to chat and gossip, as one does with their partner. Yes, they're officially a couple. A couple of months after Jacob and Queenie's wedding, these two started dating officially, making office life more fun, for they had someone to share it with. And, as a matter of fact, today marks one year of sharing their lives with each other.
Five minutes ago, Scamander had gone to ask something to his assistant, at least that's what he said he'd do, but he was taking forever to come back. Amélie assumed Theseus had asked Porter whatever he had to ask him and proceeded to go back into his office to continue with his tasks, so she focused back on hers as she continued drinking the whiskey Theseus had poured for them as she went on.
She finished writing her report on a small mission she had gone to with Theseus and their Aurors, a successful mission in which many of Grindelwald's acolytes were captured, including Abernathy and Carrow, both of them were locked on special cells and would be taken to Azkaban in the morning. This meant they were one more step closer to finding Gellert and putting an end to his reign of terror.
The second she signed the paper, Amélie sighed and reclined in the chair of her desk, tying her slightly longer hair into a small bun on the back of her head. She looked at her pocket watch and smiled at the picture she kept of Theseus in it, he was laughing and smiling, narrowing his eyes like a little kid, it was taken few months ago when they had gone on a date. The watch marked 6:15 PM. Élie closed the watch and saw the glass she had emptied and the glass that Theseus had left there, with melted ice, and she frowned.
Amélie stood, grabbed the folder and walked out of he office to get into Theseus'. She knocked the door but no one answered, naturally, her hand found the doorknob and she twisted it to push the door open but she found the room empty.
"Monsieur Porter?" She asked as she turned around to face the assistants that sat across their doors on their respective desks.
"Yes, Madame?" Asked Alexis as he looked up from his typing machine.
"Do you happen to know where Monsieur Scamander is?"
"Oh, he left." Amélie looked surprised while both Porter and Madame Dupont looked at each other and smiled, knowingly. It was a smile Porter was trying to hide as well.
"What?"
"He asked me if the Aurors had handed in their last reports and I said they were on his desk, he signed them and handed them back over to me alongside his own report and then said he'd be leaving earlier than you."
"What an idiot." Muttered Rosier, this caused Madame Dupont to chuckle, even Porter cracked a smile. "Did he really leave?"
"About ten minutes ago, ma'am." Said Madame Dupont, which caused Élie to scoff.
"He mentioned he had left something for you in his office." Porter informed.
"Thank you." Amélie said as she nodded, before walking back into Theseus' office. There was a small envelope on the desk with her name and the number one written on it in carefully made handwriting, next to it a single red rose. Amélie smiled as she grabbed the flower delicately to take a sniff of its sweet scent as she left the folder with her report on the wooden desk and took a hold of the envelope. When she opened it, it revealed a letter.
My cherie amour,
If you find yourself reading this words, it means that my plan for our anniversary is going smoothly. Yes, leaving you at the office was part of the plan, you'll probably call me an idiot because of it. However, it had to happen in order for my surprise to go as I had planned several months ago, I had to have the time to get everything set in place and make sure our evening was the most delightful.
You're probably wondering 'what the hell is going on right now', well, I decided to have a little fun and mess around with you like I used to do when we were younger, only that this time I'm not trying to get you into detention, I'm trying to get you to meet me for a lovely date. You'll find instructions to get here and, I promise, it will be fun. This is envelope number one out of five that you'll find along the way.
The first thing you've got to do is get to the place only you and I have a key to open its door. You'll find another envelope there, keep on hunting for the envelopes and I'll see you soon.
Love, Theseus.
"What are you playing?" Amélie asked herself with a smile on her face and excitement fluttering in her chest. The place for which only they had a key to its door its obviously their home, so, she was heading out. Élie grabbed the folder with her report, held on to her envelope and her rose and walked out of the office.
Rosier proceeded to walk into her office and take her blazer and coat, threw them on, grabbed her hat and placed it over her head before walking out. She locked the door of her office as she always does and locked Theseus' door the very same way.
"You're on your way out too, madame?" Asked Madame Dupont to Amélie.
"Oui, madame." Amélie handed over the folder. "Please make sure to give it to Travers before you leave."
"Will do." She smiled and nodded, a gesture Amélie reciprocated.
"And, please, don't stay too late. Go home, have dinner, a glass of wine, enjoy your evening, both of you." The assistants nodded and smiled.
"Thank you, ma'am." Said Porter as Amélie smiled at them again and walked away with envelope and rose in hand.
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Eventually, Amélie got out of the Ministry and made her way towards their home in King's Street.
When her key turned in the door and she opened it, she smiled hopeful to find Thes inside. However, her smile dropped when she found the house empty. "Theseus?" She called but there was no response. "I'm home." She placed her coat and hat on the rack and realised Theseus' grey coat was there, a detail that worried her. Amélie drew out her wand and made her way through the house.
The house was totally empty, it was only herself and the cat. When she wandered in their bedroom, she did notice an anomaly, though. On the bed, right above the navy blue bedsheets, was a medium-sized white box with a green silk robe that kept it closed and a red rose on top of the box. Élie frowned and left her wand on the bed to open the box, inside right on top of white wrapping paper, rested an envelope. On it's cover it read: Amélie, this is envelope number two. Inside it was another note from Theseus.
I remember we were walking down the streets of Paris one day. We had gone out for dinner and celebrate the fact that we had signed the contracts of the Head Auror command-ship and the ownership of our home. It was three weeks before you moved out of your home, of the life you had always lived and your own place to morph our lives together. Something I cannot thank you and love you enough for. That same day, on our way back to your place, we walked past a boutique, and I remember how your eyes lit up when you saw a green dress through the window. Well, my beloved, here's the dress I am certain you'd look stunning in. For your next clue, you must find me at the place where the wine and whiskey we drink tastes sweet, but not sweeter than at home.
I'll be waiting for you eagerly, darling.
Sincerely, the man that cannot wait to taste your kiss, Theseus.
Amélie smiled brightly as she removed the wrapping paper and pulled out the dress out of the box. The gown was beautiful, its fabric soft as silk, and green as an emerald; she knew exactly where she'd wear it, for the next place they'll go to was a fancy restaurant that was opened a year ago, Theseus decided to take Amélie there for dinner the day they signed the contracts and the keys of the house were handed over to them. That night they gut drunk on red wine and whiskey and laughed all the way home. He'd surely be waiting for her there.
Élie was equally excited to meet with Theseus that she took off her suit quite quickly and slid into the gown carefully. The straps were thin over her shoulders, the soft fabric over her chest on a V cut and letting her collarbones show, it was tight around her hips and fell down her legs smoothly, the train flowing, not tight anymore. When she looked at her reflection in the mirror, she smiled at the fact that her back was exposed and knew why Theseus got her the dress, not only because she loved it, but also because he'd love the way it looks on her.
Rosier took a white coat out of the closet and threw it over her shoulders before she took a white bag that would match and placed inside some money, her watch, and her wand, as well as her new British Ministry ID, always keeping the French ID right behind it. Amélie slipped her feet into a pair of green heels and walked up to the dresser, from where she grabbed her perfume and splashed some of it on her neck and her wrists before she pulled out of her work leathered bag her red lipstick and reapplied the makeup on her soft lips.
Then, she walked out of the house and locked the door behind her before deapparating from the street to apparate right in front of the restaurant. She smiled and walked in being welcomed by the staff immediately. She was asked if someone was waiting for her already and she said yes, then said Mister Scamander and she was guided further into the restaurant.
Her eyes lit up when she saw her man sitting at a table by the window. Theseus was wearing a fancy black suit that matched the vibes everyone in the restaurant was going for, his hair slick mack messily, curls falling over his forehead; he was drinking his whiskey neat, as he always does on special occasions and his eyes wandered past the glass where small droplets of water started falling onto.
When Theseus swallowed the sip of cold beverage he had taken, and removed his eyes from the window, he started searching for his woman and his blue eyes quickly landed on her figure. The red haired girl smiled brightly at him as soon as her eyes locked with his blue orbs, and he stood up in the blink of an eye, feeling sudden nervousness at the sight of Amélie. She walked up to him as she removed the white coat gracefully and Theseus smiled back at her, narrowing his eyes, as his hand found his chest due to the lack of air.
"You are breathtaking." He told her when he managed to move and approach her before she could reach her seat. Theseus kissed Amélie's lips sweetly, both smiling into their kiss and she laughed once they had separated from each other as Thes took a hold of her coat.
"Bonsoir, mon amour. You look extremely handsome tonight." He kissed her again as he pulled her chair for Élie to take a seat. "Merci beacoup." He hummed in response.
"I knew you'd look so stunningly beautiful in that dress." She laughed melodically at the rain of compliments he started pouring on her.
"You did?" He hummed in response again as she was asked what she'd like to drink, Amélie ordered a glass of rosé, but Theseus was quick on ordering the bottle. Then, their waiter walked away. "You're outdoing yourself this time."
"Am I?" She shrugged. "I just think this anniversary should be special."
"Why?" Theseus shrugged and took a sip of his whiskey, taking his time in tasting the alcohol on his lips, a smile being drawn across his face. "Why?" She asked again.
"Aren't you worth it?" She scoffed and his hand reached for hers across the table. "Aren't we worth it?" Amélie smiled tenderly as she laced her fingers to Theseus', he pulled her hand gently towards his mouth and placed a tender kiss upon her knuckles.
"Of course we are." Theseus smiled against her skin and kissed her knuckles again.
"I mean, one year of sharing our lives seemed fitting for a night like this one."
"Agreed. Although I'm still bitter about you leaving me at the office with no further notice." Scamander laughed.
"Yeah, sorry about that. It was all part of my plan."
"I can see that. I did call you an idiot, by the way." Scamander chuckled.
"I knew you would, and what can I say? I came up with the idea out of the blue and went on with it. And you must admit the envelope hunt has been fun, has it not?"
"It has. I expected your clues to be a little harder to decode, you know? I expected young Theseus to make my life a little harder for a moment."
"Honestly, I thought about it, but I just wanted to hang out with you, it would be pointless to have you running around town." She laughed, throwing her head back, and Theseus wished they could be in a more private place until he didn't care. Laughing as well, he pulled her chair closer to his, this action only increased Amélie's laughter, her head pulled back still, so Theseus kissed her shoulder and then her neck discretely, taking in the soft rose scent of her perfume. Rosier turned to him and kissed him tenderly.
"Well, I'm here now and it's just been two envelopes." He nodded.
"I know." He said shrugging; Amélie smiled sweetly, gesture which Theseus reciprocated. Theseus let go of her hand to reach for something in the inner pocket of his coat, from it, he pulled a white envelope and he grabbed something from the ground, another red rose. "Number three." Élie chuckled as she took the envelope and the flower before opening the letter to read it out loud.
"After dinner, we shall walk underneath the shadows of the spot where I first told you I was in love with you." Her green eyes looked up at him. "Are we going all the way back to New York?" Theseus frowned with a smile, tilting his head to the side; his confusion made Amélie chuckle tenderly. "The first time you told me you were in love with me was in New York."
"Oh, shit. I forgot to write 'here in London'." They laughed as she nodded.
"Kensington Gardens?" Theseus nodded.
"I thought it would be a nice thing, to go on a walk." She laughed and looked out the window.
"Under the rain?" Theseus laughed too.
"Well, Élie, I can't control the weather." Both laughed loudly. "But there's something romantic about it, you know?"
"Oh, I know." He reached for her hand and kissed her knuckles again. Then, their wine bottle arrived and they ordered dinner.
The couple spent a nice time, laughing and getting drunk on not so cheap wine until the rain turned into a drizzle and they could actually walk underneath towards the Gardens. Theseus placed Amélie's coat over her shoulders before he threw on his own coat and, once the check was payed and they were outside, Theseus made sure to create a water umbrella that emerged from his wand to protect them from the remaining rain as Élie locked her arm to his. They were thankful to be in the magical side of London at the moment.
By the time they were nearing the edge of the Wizarding world and the Muggle world, the rain had stopped and he could keep his wand before they crossed that barrier, which was simply walking through an Inn called 'The Leaky Cauldron'.
Both walked together down the streets until they reached Kensington Gardens and entered the dreamy place, where white flowers were blooming during the rainy summertime. The rain made everything feel damp, however, these two enjoyed their evening walking down the lanes underneath the trees being embraced by the sweet and light-felt shadow they casted.
"While this is a romantic walk, I'm intrigued about what could happen next." Said Amélie.
"Oh, you won't even see it coming." She rolled her eyes, amused, and Theseus chuckled as she smiled at him. "I don't know about you, but I feel like I missed dessert."
"Oh, darling, you don't feel like you missed dessert. We actually didn't have dessert."
"Right. In that case, would you fancy an ice-cream?" She smiled and nodded knowing exactly he'd say that because she's not a big fan of cakes or any sort of cookie, and there's an ice-cream shop nearby.
"I most certainly would." He smiled and kissed the side of her face before they walked out of the Gardens to cross the street and reach the ice-cream shop. Inside, he ordered for both a pair of scoops in cones, vanilla for Amélie, chocolate for him.
"Thank you." Said Amélie as Theseus payed before both walked out. A second later, they turned around as they heard the worker of the shop calling someone.
"Miss! Excuse me!" Both Aurors stopped on their tracks and turned around.
"Yes?"
"Are you Madame Amélie Rosier?" Amélie frowned and looked at Theseus, who was just as serious.
"I-" Before she could answer, the man showed her a white envelope with formal handwriting on it. It said 'Amélie Rosier. Number four.' and she just looked at Theseus, who smiled before looking away as he shrugged and kept on licking his chocolate ice-cream. "Yes, that's me. Thank you, I must've forgotten it."
"That's what I thought. Have a nice evening." He added before walking away.
"You too." Said Theseus. Amélie just looked at him and he started chuckling while they kept on walking on the sidewalk. "You're an idiot. I worried for a second." She joined his laugher as it increased and stole a kiss from her when she tried to open the envelope.
"I love you." Rosier's eyes snapped towards Theseus' side profile and smiled happily and, as Theseus likes to tell her, as bright as the sun.
"I love you, too." She opened the envelope and pulled out the letter as she kept on eating her ice-cream. Theseus held the envelope and kept it in his pocket as Amélie read. "My love, by the time you read this it'll be quarter past nine." Amélie frowned and pulled out of her bag the pocket watch, it was indeed, quarter past nine. "Incredibly precise, Monsieur Scamander." Theseus shrugged proudly, which made her laugh as he smiled at her; Amélie kept on reading. "I suggest we walk down the Gardens for a while or go to the place we love the most, it's entirely up to you." She looked at him. "I want to go home, actually. I love these shoes but my feet ache."
"Hmm, you're really good at these guessing games." It was Élie's turn to shrug.
"Certainly, and you've got to make this harder, Thes." Scamander laughed and rolled his eyes as she kept the letter in her bag alongside the rose he had given her and held his hand tightly. They finished their ice-creams enjoying a comfortable silence until they entered their world once again and made their way towards their house.
At their arrival, Theseus took off her coat and placed it on the rack before taking off his own coat. Amélie kicked off her heels and let her hair down her as she let out a sigh and made her way towards the bedroom with the third rose in hand because she pulled it out of her bag before throwing the bag on the couch.
"I'm still waiting for number five, Scamander." Theseus laughed from the kitchen.
"That note will be the most shocking of all." Amélie laughed too and made her way towards her dresser, where she removed her earrings and placed them into her jewel box, then, she took off her necklace and her ring. As she did so, Rosier spotted an envelope on her pillow and two red roses alongside it through the mirror's reflection.
Amélie frowned and she turned around to make her way towards the bed and picked up the envelope and the flowers. Those weren't there earlier, she would've seen them when she dressed up with the gown she was wearing, but there was nothing there. Had she missed the envelope? No, those were definitely not there last time she had been in the bedroom.
Rosier took a hold of the roses and carefully opened the envelope, inside just a small note. Amélie's confused frown fell, as well as her excited smile as she felt a shock of electricity all over her body. Élie's eyes turned teary as she walked out of the bedroom quickly to find candles lit up around the living room, more wine, and more red roses, with Theseus standing in the middle of the room; his tux's jacket gone as well as his tie, his hands nervously fidgeting with a small box.
"Is this true?" She asked and he looked at her, breathed in and out deeply as he kept the box back into his right pocket. "Please tell me this is not a funny joke of yours, Scamander."
"I would never joke about that." He approached her and took from her trembling hands the note and the flowers, he set the roses on the couch's arm and kept the note into his left pocket before holding her hands. "I used to think that passion was simply a passing thing, accidental chemistry that one day would blow everything up. But, over time, I've noticed that it's not what we are at all. We do have chemistry, but it won't blow up, the fire wont burn down." A tear fell down Amélie's cheek, but Theseus kissed it away. "I love you. And I would go anywhere that you lead. I am hopeless, breathless, burning slow hoping to have you by my side for the rest of my life, as long as I breathe." She chuckled and smiled. "I won't leave. Not again. Not ever. You asked me once to stay and I will stay, forever because at this point I need your presence in my life to breathe properly." He held her hands tightly. "Each time we do anything, each day and night we spend together, feels new; I know is essential for you to know you're loved, to know that I love you more than wishing and longing. Rest assured, my love, that I do love you more than anything in this world."
Theseus walked even closer to Amélie, still holding her hands, and bent down only a little as for their foreheads to touch gently. Slowly, he let go of her, his hands digging into his pockets. He pulled out the box and opened it at the same time he showed her the note. His mother's white gold engagement ring shone underneath the candlelight, the sapphire twinkling thanks to the fire, as his handwriting was illuminated in the white paper and Amélie teared up again.
"Would you marry me?" He read the note that was inside of envelope number five.
"Yes." She answered quickly, in a heartbeat like she had promised, Theseus had barely finished asking his question. And he smiled at her while Élie just stood there, smiling as her tears fell until he started laughing. Amélie laughed too and kissed his lips. Theseus' arms wrapped around her figure. Amélie kept on kissing his face, covering his skin with red lipstick kisses. After a long and tender kiss, she pulled away. "Always yes." Theseus laughed and let go of her to leave the note on the couch and pull the ring out of the box, then, he slid it carefully around her finger on her left hand.
Then, they stood there in their living room, just staring at the ring that's now around her finger, both surprised at how it fit perfectly, both surprised it was there, both surprised about the answer being 'yes' despite everything they had gone through, glad all the shit that had hit the fan was in the past. And they looked at each other, Amélie's teary face, and Theseus' kissed face; and they laughed again as they embraced each other.
Élie's arms were around Thes' neck while his rested around her waist, he hid his face on the crook of her neck and inhaled her perfume. Slowly, he kissed her skin and she granted him more access by throwing her head back, one of his hands was quick on finding the back of her neck.
Suddenly, they gave in to the lust building in their cores. When Theseus pulled away, Élie was quick on kissing his neck while Scamander's hands caressed her exposed back. It took him a second to get her out of the emerald dress.
Eventually, she pushed his clothes off and both were standing naked in their living room until Theseus brought Amélie with him towards the couch, where they enjoyed themselves for a while until he carried her all the way towards their bedroom.
"I love you." He'd whisper in her ear.
"I love you, too." She whispered back.
After half an hour went by, both of them were laying in bed, embracing each other. Amélie's head fell on Theseus' chest, her left hand being held by him. Both of them stared at the ring again as Thes kissed her knuckles constantly.
"I can't believe that's real." Theseus chuckled.
"Did you think I'd propose?"
"When you sent me in a hunt for letters and roses?" He hummed un response. "No, I don't think so." They chuckled. "I just thought you'd want to make something special for today."
"How was this for special?" She smiled against his lips.
"Very." Amélie kissed Theseus tenderly, his hands caressing her naked back. "So," she said, breaking the kiss. "we have to plan things up."
"No, we don't." Élie frowned.
"Yes, we do. We gotta figure out what we're gonna do. A wedding is a major event."
"But we have the basics: a wedding at the end of spring, early days of the summer in Italy with close friends, nothing too big." She blinked and smiled, acknowledging he remembered her dream celebration. "We could honeymoon in Greece or-"
"Yes, I'd like that." Theseus smiled.
"Alright, then all we have to do is figure out the place for the venue and the party, we already have a clear idea for the best men and the bridesmaids, the guests, who's definitely not invited to the celebration, we have to get you a dress and I have to get a tux, etcetera. Those are just details, we have time."
"No, we don't." Theseus laughed while Amélie just smiled. "We have a month."
"Élie, love, we do have time. Trust me." She sighed.
"Trust you? With this? Non, mon amour." He laughed even louder, throwing his head back. "I love you so much, Scamander, and I trust you with my life but I don't trust you with the wedding. Sorry if that hurts your feelings."
"Amélie, we do have time." He rolled around, placing himself on top of Amélie. "How 'bout we start planning everything in a more meticulous way tomorrow morning? Let's just rest tonight," Theseus began to kiss Amélie's neck. "have more wine," another kiss and she closed her eyes, smiling with pleasure. "make more love," he sucked on her skin, causing her to gasp and grip his hair tightly, which led to a low noise rumbling in his throat. "take a drunken bath and fall asleep?"
"Hm, alright."
"Took a lot of convincing, huh?" She laughed.
"Go get the wine."
"Yes, ma'am." Theseus left their bed to get the wine. He opened the bottle, took two glasses, set their clothes on the couch and turned off the candles before he returned to the bedroom. Amélie was still laying on their bed waiting patiently for him.
Their night continued calmly, talking about random things they'd like to see happen in their wedding writing them down on a journal Amélie keeps in her nightstand drawer. They drank up the bottle and gave into themselves for the second time, tasting the red wine from their mouths each time they shared a kiss.
Eventually, after both of them had reached their high and descended from it, Élie prepared a bath for them. They spent their whole time in the bathtub laughing, planning ahead, thinking of how the way their future could look like. They even talked the kids situation, and she confessed she was scared to be a mother.
"Why?" Asked Theseus as he washed her back. Amélie shrugged.
"I don't know. I'm scared not to be a good one. I mean, my references aren't very good. My dad was a dick, and my mother was an angel. She raised me good, but she also raised Vinda and you know she turned out." That's when Theseus thought about the risk and how dangerous it could be to have their wedding revealed to the public, if this news got onto the font page of The Prophet, Vinda would know and she'd try to ruin the ceremony. So he was determined to keep it all a secret.
"But there's Evan and you. Both of you turned out to be great people, Éls." Theseus brought Amélie close to his chest, hugging her tightly. "You could be a great mother." She smiled.
"Thank you." She smiled at him. "You'd be a wonderful father." Theseus smiled and kissed her lips.
"Thank you, as well." She giggled and sighed as she melted into his arms, the water still warm. "Hey, uh...how secret do you want to keep this engagement and celebration."
"Very secret. I can't have this on the front page. This is our moment, to be shared with the people we want to know, our friends, family, not every person a newspaper can reach." He nodded and kissed her temple.
"Good, we're on the same page."
"I'm glad."
These two finished up their bad and dried their bodies and hair, then, they slipped into the bedsheets again and embraced each other. Before they even knew it, they were enjoying themselves once again and covered with a thin layer of sweat.
Eventually, when they had climbed off their high once again, they laid down in bed, feeling each other's breath, their heartbeat in synch, and fell asleep under a new light knowing the future's bright for them.
