Chase & Catch
November 13th, 1920.
New York City, MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America).
A while ago, like it had been mentioned before, a certain Dark Wizard had made his sympathisers attack different places in Europe. He has been raising an army, but no one knew his whereabouts, so far everyone was trying to get his acolytes.
At some point, after there was a strike in Switzerland, Grinderwald was caught with a bunch of his fanatics. However, he managed to escape once more. No one knows where he might have gone to.
Now, we find ourselves in a tough situation. There was an emergency meeting in the United States, at the Magic Congress. Amélie was there as Head Auror of the French Department, right behind the Minister and next to one of her lifelong friends, Elyna Allard, her right hand in the Bureaux.
In the room there were witches and wizards from all around the world, all of them in silence while the current situation was discussed. And by that I mean the death of a Muggle Senator, killed during his speech earlier that night.
"Our American friends have permitted a breach of the Statue of Secrecy that threatens to expose us all." Said Minister Heinrich.
"I will not be lectured by the man who let Gellert Grinderwald slip through his fingers." Said President Picquery and Rosier had to look down in order not to let anyone see her smiling at the comment, amused.
"Madam President, I'm sorry to interrupt, but this is critical..." The voice of a woman called everyone's attention. When she entered the room and saw all of the wizards and witches that were in there she stopped talking, a concerned look on her face.
"You better have an excellent excuse for this intrusion, Miss Goldstein." Said the President.
"Yes. I do." She stepped closer to the middle of the room. "Ma'am, yesterday a wizard entered New York with a case, this case." She lifted her right hand a bit to make it even more clear. "Full of magical creatures and, unfortunately, some of them have escaped."
"He arrived yesterday?" She nodded. "You've known for twenty four hours that an unregistered wizard set magical beasts loose in New York and you see fit to tell us only when a man has been killed?"
"Who's been killed?"
"Where is this man?" The President avoided Miss Goldstein's question by asking another one. The woman bent down, placed the case on the ground, opened it and knocked on top of it before stepping back. Moments later, a guy appeared from inside the case. He stepped out and looked around, only a second afterwards, another guy appeared and the crowd murmured amongst them.
"Scamander?" Asked the British Minister as the man in the blue coat bent down to close his case after the other man was next to him, and Amélie frowned. That's when she had a better look at the man's face and she realised he look a lot like Theseus.
"Oh, hello, Minister." Said Scamander as he stood up.
"Theseus Scamander? The war hero?" Asked a man from across the room.
"No. This is his little brother." Said the Minister.
"Newt." Rosier said out loud —to herself, though— as she remembered a name that had fallen off of Leta's lips ages ago.
"You know him?" Asked the French Minister to his Auror.
"Not personally, I know his brother." She clarified.
"What are you doing in New York?" Asked the British Minister to the youngest Scamander.
"I came to buy an Appaloosa Puffskein, sir." Said Scamander sarcastically.
"Right. What are you really doing here?" He remained quiet until Seraphina spoke again.
"Goldstein, who is this?" She asked, pointing with her eyes at the man beside Newt.
"This is Jacob Kowalski, Madam President." She answered. "He's a No-Maj who got bitten by one of Mister Scamander's creatures." Everyone exclaimed loudly, not to mention that they asked for him to be obliviated. Amélie looked at Elyna, who sighed as she shrugged, while Élie blew the air out of her cheeks. This was serious. That's when Newt got a look at the image of the Non-Magique Senator floating in the air.
"Merlin's beard." He exclaimed.
"You know which of your creatures was responsible, Mister Scamander?" Asked a woman and Rosier crossed her arms over her chest.
"No creature did this." Newt answered. "Don't pretend. You must know what that was. Look at the marks." He covered his mouth. "That was an Obcurus." Everyone gasped and Amélie's arms fell to the sides as she frowned and the rest murmured.
"You go too far, Mister Scamander." Said Madame President. "There is no Obscurial in America. Impound that case, Graves." The head of the American Law Enforcement department extended his hand and the case flew from Newt's hand to his.
"Wait, no." He tried to take out his wand.
"Arrest them." Graves used his hand again and the three of them were made to kneel as Aurors approached to handcuff them.
"Don't hurt those creatures." Newt begged. "Please. You don't understand. Nothing in there's dangerous. Nothing."
"We'll be the judges of that." Said the President as Graves stood up and took the wands of the witch and the wizard before the three of them were made to stand. "Take them to the cells."
"Don't hurt those creatures! Nothing in there is dangerous!" Newt continued to beg for the safety of the creatures as he was being basically dragged out of the room. "Please don't hurt my creatures! They aren't dangerous! Please, please! They're not dangerous! They're not dangerous!" When they had been taken away, Rosier decided to step out of the room and follow the Aurors. It didn't take long before she bumped into...
"Graves." She said, keeping her hands in her pockets.
"Rosier." He said. "Where are you going?"
"To speak with whomever I need to speak to be able to see the three guys you have arrested."
"Why?"
"He's Theseus' brother."
"I am aware."
"You can't keep him here, he must be taken back to Europe. To London."
"No time." She scoffed.
"Bullshit." He looked at her with a coy smirk.
"You've always been a bold one, Amélie. But it takes bigger guts than I thought you had to talk to me like that."
"Well, now you know I have them." He looked away. "Let me talk to him. That way I can at least inform his family about the situation." He sighed. "Please, and we'll be even." He frowned. "I saved your skin three months ago when you visited Paris, let me talk to him and we're even." He looked away from her, sighing.
"Five minutes. Go down the hall and down the stairs to the left." She nodded.
"Merci beaucoup, monsieur." He nodded back. "And, Graves?" He looked at her. "What are you going to do with the case?"
"See what's inside."
"Don't hurt those creatures."
"I won't. What will you tell him?"
"I don't know yet." She made her way down the hall and found the stairs, rushed down and looked at the guards who nodded at her. It didn't take her long to find three people in the cell. "Newt Scamander, right?" The young man that was sitting on the ground stood up.
"Yes. Who are you?"
"Amélie Rosier, Head Auror of the French Bureaux." He raised his eyebrows. He only needed the name to know how his brother would simply rant about her in the good way —when they were a thing— and the bad way —when they had parted ways—. It was a name he hasn't heard in a long time. "And...friend of your brother."
"What do you know? Have they done something to my creatures?"
"No. They haven't done anything."
"Do you know what they'll do?"
"When I asked, Graves said he'd have a look inside the case. That's all I know." He sat back down as he sighed. A silence pitched through everyone's ears for a minute until Jacob spoke.
"Can someone please tell me what this Obscurial...Obscurius thing is, please?" The wizards looked at each other.
"There hasn't been one for centuries." Said Miss Goldstein.
"I met one in Sudan three months ago." Said Newt. "There used to be more of them, but they still exist."
"It was before the wizards were underground." Amélie explained. "When we were still being hunted by Non-Magiques." Scamander nodded. "Young wizards and witches sometimes tried to suppress their magic to avoid persecution."
"So, instead of learning to harness or to control their powers, they developed what was called an Obscurus." Newt added.
"It's an unstable, uncontrollable, dark force that bursts out and attacks. And then vanishes." Said Miss Goldstein as she looked at Scamander. "Obscurials can't survive long, can they?"
"There is no documented case of an Obscurial surviving past the age of ten." He said. "The one I met in Africa was eight when she...she was eight when she died." Everyone remained silent for a moment again.
"What are you telling me here? That- that Senator Shaw was killed by a...a kid?" Asked Mister Kowalski. Silence seemed to be enough answer for his question.
"I need to inform your brother." Rosier commented.
"No, don't do that. There's no need to disturb him while he's hunting for that Grindelwald." She breathed in and out at Newt's response. "Please, don't tell him. He's doing more important things and I don't need him to yell at me for being arrested and accidentally setting loose some creatures all over New York. Please, please don't tell him anything." She sighed through her nose.
"Fine, but I do need to know what can they find in there, something that could make you look...more guilty." Asked the Auror.
"More guilty?" Asked Newt. "I'm not guilty of anything in the first place."
"And I believe you, but they won't do the same that easily. Mister Scamander, you're not even supposed to be in New York given Minister Fawley's surprise to find you here." Newt sighed.
"They will find creatures, magical creatures of all sorts." He said after a short pause. "I'm studying them and I'm writing a book about them." Amélie smiled. "There's nothing that-" She frowned when he stopped mid-sentence.
"That what?" He just looked at her. That's when Graves showed up with two more Aurors. "Graves."
"Time's up."
"Give me another minute."
"No, I'm sorry." She sighed and they opened the door of the cell. "Scamander, Goldstein. Out." They took a hold of the magical guys. "If you want to give a hand, take care of him." He said, looking at the Non-Magique. "Obliviate him." They were walking down the hall as the other two simply stood there and looked.
"It was good to make your acquaintance, Jacob." Newt told the Muggle, turning around to face him. "And I hope you get your bakery." Mister Kowalski waved at him to say goodbye. Amélie knew that something was off, something didn't feel right. She closed the gate of the cell and left Jacob in there. He frowned.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"To do my job." Her eyes landed on Elyna when she saw some movement to her right. "What are you doing here?"
"Looking for you."
"Well, stay here. Keep an eye on him, I'll obliviate him as soon as I'm back."
"And where are you going now?"
"To the interrogatory." She followed the Aurors and hopped into the elevator before the doors closed. "Bonsoir." She greeted everyone and Graves sighed.
"You can't be here." He told her.
"According to the Magical laws of Europe, you cannot interrogate an Eurpoean witch or wizard without the presence of another native of the lands of the other side of the world. I thought you were fond on them as we're supposed to be with yours."
"That only applies if both of you are British."
"Lucky for you, I am." He frowned. "My Mother was a Witch from Britain, meaning I have the nationality. Plus, the law also applies if they're natives of allied countries. Last time I checked, the UK and France were allies, weren't they? Not to mention that the presence of a family member is recommended, and due to Theseus' absence, I'll be that person." Graves sighed, exasperated. Amélie smiled at him.
"Seems like I'm not the only one that annoys people." Newt whispered and Rosier smiled.
"It's a gift, Mister Scamander, we must use it well." They walked out of the lift and moments later, walked into an interrogation room. Graves sat down across from Newt while Miss Goldstein stood by the door while Amélie stood behind Graves. Said man placed a file before him and laced his fingers together over the table.
"You're an interesting man, Mister Scamander." Said Graves.
"Mister Graves..." Goldstein tried to talk but, with a simple gesture, Percival made her go silent.
"You were thrown out of Hogwarts for endangering a human life." Graves continued.
"That was an accident." Newt said to the black haired woman that stood by the door. Explaining everything to her than the Auror that sits before him.
"With a beast." Graves added. "Yet one of your teachers argued strongly against your expulsion. Now, what makes Albus Dumbledore so fond of you?" Scamander didn't even look at him.
"I really couldn't say."
"So, setting a pack of dangerous creatures loose here was...just another accident. Is that right?"
"Why would I do it deliberately?"
"To expose wizardkind. To provoke war between the magical and non-magical worlds." Amélie frowned.
"Mass slaughter for the greater good, you mean?"
"Yes. Quite."
"I'm not one of Grindelwald's fanatics, Mister Graves."
"I wonder what you can tell me about this, Mister Scamander." He extended a hand, making a bubble looking container float over the table. That's when Amélie realised he had taken that out of Newt's case and that precisely this is what Newt had remembered a moment ago.
"It's an Obscurus. But, it's not what you think. I managed to separate it from the Sudanese girl as I tried to save her. So I wanted to take it home to study it. But it cannot survive outside that. It cannot hurt anyone, Tina."
"So it's useless without a host?" Amélie frowned at Graves' question and the tone of voice he had used. It was as if he was...interested in the Obscurus. Deeply interested. The French Auror started to walk slowly to stand on the opposite orner, right in front of Percival.
"Useless? Useless? That is a parasitical, magical force that killed a child. What on earth would you use it for?" Graves looked at everyone in the room, his eyes nervous as he stood up.
"You fool nobody, Mister Scamander. You brought this Obscurus into the City of New York in the hope of causing mass disruption, breaking the Statue of Secrecy, and revealing the Magical World."
"You know that can't hurt anyone. You know that."
"You're therefore guilty of a treasonous betrayal of your fellow wizards and are sentenced to death." One of the witches dressed in white placed the tip of her wand by his shoulder and on his neck. Amélie gave a step forward but Graves extended a hand, keeping her in her place. "Miss Goldstein, who has aided you and abetted you-"
"No! She's done nothing of the kind." Newt argued. Élie looked at Tina, whose eyes were filled with tears and whose face had written sadness, worry and some sort of betrayal all over it.
"Receives the same sentence. Just do it immediately." Graves finished and Tina started sobbing. "I will inform President Picquery myself."
"Tina-" Newt tried to speak.
"Shh."
"Percival, think about this." Amélie jumped into the conversation. "You must dig in deeper, you have to-"
"Rosier, if you won't cooperate and do your job as an Auror, I will arrest you for conspiracy and betrayal as well." Amélie stood there, feeling useless and helpless. "Go obliviate that No-Maj or your wrists will be cuffed and bye-bye career." She sighed annoyed.
"You will regret threatening me when you know you're not doing your job properly either." She said harshly as she pointed at his face and left the room to make her way back to the cells. Only that she found something she didn't expect nor liked. "Where is he? Elyna, where's the Non-Magique?"
"Someone came for him, they just left and I couldn't avoid it. I'm sorry." She groaned, annoyed.
"Merde." They started rushing upstairs. "I need you to go back to Europe, I don't care about what Newt said, go to London and find Theseus Scamander. Tell him his brother is in serious trouble and that he must get here as soon as possible." Elyna nodded and they reached the lobby of MACUSA. "Who took him?"
"Him, they're over there." She spotted a man with a blue suit walking Mister Kowalski.
"Thank you. Now go and find Mister Scamander." Elyna nodded and walked out of the place while Amélie approached the man. "Evening." She greeted.
"Miss Rosier." The guy nodded.
"Mister Graves game me the order to take care of him. Thank you, but I'll take it from here."
"I'm sorry, Ma'am, but you have no jurisdiction here."
"I-"
"Hey, Sam." A female voice appeared to their right.
"Hello, Queenie."
"They need you downstairs. We'll obliviate this guy."
"You ain't qualified."
"Hey, Sam. Does Cecily know you been seeing Ruby?"
"How did you-"
"Let us obliviate this guy, and she'll never hear about it from me." Mister Kowalski looked at the two of them, specially at Queenie, as they walked to the opposite way they had been walking. This Sam guy walked away slowly.
"What are you doing?" Asked Jacob.
"Hush. Tin's in trouble, I'm trying to listen." Amélie frowned. "Any of you knows, where's Newt's case?"
"Graves has it." Rosier answered. "Must be at his office, don't know where it is though."
"I do. Come on."
"Wait, you're not going to obliviate me? The question's specifically for you, French miss." Élie smiled.
"I'm not obliviating you, Mister Kowalski. And I know she won't do it either." Queenie smiled.
"Of course not. You're one of us now." Said the blonde woman.
From that moment on, it didn't take them long to reach Graves' office. It was closed and the door was locked. Queenie started to make an attempt to pick the lock using classic spells that would open it like 'Alohomora' or 'Aberto' but none worked.
"He would know some fancy spell to lock his office." Said Queenie and Amélie pulled out her wand.
"If I may..." Said the man beside her and she simply nodded, giving him a try. The two ladies stepped back a bit and, seconds later, he kicked down the door. Rosier chuckled.
"Magnifique." She complimented and Mister Kowalski smiled.
"Thank you." Queenie rushed into the office, took the case and the wands from the desk, and walked out quickly. With a flick of her wand, Amélie fixed the door for it to look as good as new.
As they walked back to the cells, alarms started ringing and many people in leathered coats started moving. As they all walked and rushed to get to the lobby, they bumped into the two wizards that were sent to die. They all understood each other with their eyes. Everyone asking questions like 'are you okay?' and 'what do we do now?' Queenie looked at her hand and moved up the case.
"Get in." She said and Tina, Newt and Jacob got into the case while the two other girls walked out towards the lobby again. Queenie made her pink coat appear with a flick of her wand as they walked into the lobby. They started walking downstairs when someone called the blonde girl. "I'll meet you at the entrance." Amélie nodded and simply walked out of the building. They met right outside seconds later.
"So? Where are we off to now?" Queenie offered a hand and Amélie took it, that's when they deapparated just to appear on top of another building. That's when the case was opened and the other three came out, moments later, they kept on moving and apparated on top of Jacob's building.
"Graves always insisted the disturbances were caused by a beast." Said Tina. "We need to catch all your creatures so he can't keep using them as a scapegoat."
"How many creatures are you missing, Mister Scamander?"Asked Élie.
"One. And, please, call me Newt." Rosier nodded with a smile. "Dougal, my Demiguise."
"Dougal?" Asked Tina and Newt chuckled while she simply smiled.
"Slight problem is that, um...he's invisible."
"What?" Asked Élie.
"Invisible?" Tina repeated at the unison.
"Yes." Said Newt. "Most of the time he does, um..."
"How do you catch something that's-?" Amélie started to ask.
"With immense difficulty." He answered.
"Oh." Exclaimed Tina. "Oh." It sounded like she had realised something. "Gnarlak." Everyone looked at her.
"Excuse me?" Asked Newt.
"Gnarlak. He was an informant of mine when I was an Auror. He used to trade in magical creatures on the side."
"He wouldn't happen to have an interest in paw prints, would he?"
"He's interested in anything he can sell."
"Brilliant. We must leave now if we are to catch Dougal tonight." Everyone nodded and they stood by the edge of the building. Everyone except for Amélie. "You're not coming?"
"I'm afraid not. I've risked too much already. I can try to inform you of everything I hear at the Ministry, that's the only way I can help you."
"It's more than enough." Said Newt, that's when Tina stepped forward and gave her a card with her address on it.
"You can find us there." She told the Auror, who nodded with a smile.
"Good luck." In a second, they deapparated.
She aparated herself on the street to start walking back towards the MACUSA building in order to get to France again. As she walked, she noticed how the Non-Magiques talked vividly between them, couples holding hands, children.
She smiled to herself, although it was a sad smile that no one around seemed to mind. At some point, as she turned left on a corner of the street, getting closer to the building by the minute, she heard someone walking right behind her. She looked over her shoulder and saw a shadow hiding behind some trees, she frowned as she looked back to the front and saw two people walking towards her, their hats low and their leathered coats shone with the streetlight. Aurors.
She looked down, her hat covering her face perfectly as she crossed the street and made her way down a park quickly. When she looked over her shoulder again, she saw four figures pressing the walk. She cussed under her breath as she pulled out her wand from under her sleeve and held it tightly.
When she saw other two closing before her, she stopped on her tracks and started walking on an opposite way, faster. Why were they chasing her? Why were they after her? What was going on? Her frown got tighter as she crossed the park again.
"Rosier!" She stopped abruptly again and turned around to find the Head of the Law Enforcement.
"Graves." She said.
"Listen, Amélie, I need you to come with me. Now."
"What? Why?"
"Because...you're under arrest." Her frown intensified. "You helped them escape, Rosier. That makes you their accomplice. You're under arrest."
"I...what?" He stepped closer and she stepped back.
"Give me your wand, Rosier."
"No." He tilted his head.
"Amélie, let's not do this the hard way." She scoffed and a second later, her back hit the tree trunk behind her. She was cornered. "Listen, we have two scenarios here. One: I arrest you and you're taken to the French Ministry Prison, or, two..." He made a long pause as he stepped closer to her. "You join me." Their eyes met and her frown remained while he just looked at her. "I could use someone like you with me. Your sister is already by my side."
"What did you say?" He nodded.
"She's the most loyal of them all." She shook her head. "My most loyal accomplice."
"You lie."
"I never lie. I tend to tell the truth...differently. But it is more than real the fact that your little sœur has joined my lines, in fact, long ago." That's when she realised the man everyone has been looking for was standing right before her. He has been underneath their noses for months and no one seemed to see a thing, to notice. And what was alarming as well is that, surely, many of his acolytes were infiltrated in the Ministries. Question was...who was who, and which side were they on? "Come on, Amélie. Time to come home." He extended a hand as he stepped away from her. She meditated for a second, not tempted, but willing to see if it was true what he was saying about Vinda. But that would be betraying her ideals, everything she has been working for, and...him.
"No." She sent him backwards with a strong stunning spell and before the other men and women could fire their jinxes and hexes, she deapparated. She apparated couple blocks away, when she simply reclined her weight against the wall of an alley, she looked around to make sure she hadn't been followed. That's when her eyes landed on what seemed to be green, blue and purple feathers shrinking. She frowned and disappeared from the streets to appear in the building. "You." She said when she saw the fugitives, the sister and the muggle there. It was quite a scene: everything destroyed, roaches running on the ground in all directions and in the middle Tina and Newt keeping something in a teapot. Amélie shrugged as she flicked her wand to rebuild and repair the broken brick walls and windows.
"Us." Said Scamander. "I assumed you'd be off."
"Me too, but things are more complicated that we thought."
"How complicated?" Asked Tina.
"Very." Answered Rosier. "Do we have somewhere to talk where we don't risk being found?" They all looked at each other and then at the case in Newt's hand. "Oh, tu te moques de moi." Scamander smiled.
"No, I'm not kidding. Everyone in." He said, opened the case and the five of them stepped inside carefully. It was amazing. There was a little kitchen and when you stepped out you could find creatures of all sorts living in their very own —and little— habitat. It was warm, cozy and peaceful not to mention bright. Everything seemed to be so serene. "Please, make yourselves comfortable." Said Newt before stepping out even further to get the beasts Tina and Jacob were carrying accordingly into their resting areas.
Rosier took off her coat and hat as she looked around, amazed by the beauty of the inside of the leathered case. She walked around and admired the creatures she had only seen images of in school books. She was smiling, feeling like a little kid again; a kid who' s enjoying of a sunny afternoon at her mother's vacation house in Great Britain. She turned around and saw Newt talking to a Bowtruckle, her smile grew bigger. She approached the Magizoologist.
"This is wonderful, Mister Scamander." She told him. "A very lovely and noble thing you're doing." He smiled, shyly.
"Thank you." She returned the smile.
"You know? It reminds me of home."
"I'm glad this place reminds you of home. It is the very same for me." She chuckled.
"And you remind me of my mother." He smiled more.
"Really?" She nodded.
"She knew and loved all there was to know about magical creatures. She was a professor at Beauxbatons, she gave us the class of Care for Magical Creatures, actually. And she had her very own Bowtruckle, she let me name her Leavy." Newt smiled even more.
"That sounds lovely." She looked at the ground and remained to smile. "Whatever happened to them? Do they have a bond like mine with Pickett?" She giggled but her smile started to drop.
"They, uh...they had a similar bond. Sadly, she got sick and passed away years ago, Leavy died couple months after her. I...couldn't save either of them."
"I'm sorry to hear that." She shrugged.
"It's alright." Élie sighed. "I'm just thinking that...she would've loved this. And your soon-to-be book." They smiled at each other.
"And I would've loved to chat with her." He looked at Pickett. "Them, actually." Rosier chuckled as Pickett made his way down Newt's arm and, slowly, made his way up through Amélie's arm until he stood on her shoulder. She greeted the little guy with tears in her eyes. She really missed her mother, after all, she was all the family she had left. Her father was vile and a bad man, a dark wizard; her sister left after their mother's passing and Amélie hasn't heard a thing from her in years. Until now.
"Hey, Newt." Queenie's voice snapped her out of memory lane. She blinked a few times and washed a single tear that fell down her cheek. She proceeded to roll up the sleeves of her shirt up to her elbow and help Newt to peel off seeds to feed some creature. "Who is she?"
"Oh, that's no one." Newt answered and focused back on the job he was doing.
"Leta Lestrange." Amélie frowned at the name and the fact that Newt hadn't answered the question, and yet, Queenie knew the answer. "I've heard of that family. Aren't they kind of...you know..."
"Please don't read my mind." There was a silence among them all. "Sorry, I asked you not to."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"You're a Legilimens." Amélie commented.
"Yes. And I can't help it. People are easiest to read when they're hurting."
"I'm not hurting." Newt said, offering a smile. "Anyway, it was a long time ago." Rosier frowned. She only knew Leta and Newt had been friends, but apparently, there had been more. She focused on her task, thinking it wasn't any of her business.
"That was a real close friendship you had at school."
"Well, neither of us really fitted in at school. So, we became quite-"
"You became real close. For years." A pause. "She was a taker. You need a giver." Newt looked at the seeds and Élie just cleared her throat. Queenie blinked when, all of the sudden, she was able to hear a third mind in the room. "Oh." She exclaimed.
"What?"
"I hadn't heard her mind...until now." Newt looked at the Auror, who simply sent him a look and he understood it was to drag the attention to her. He gave her a soft nod. "You learned Occlumency."
"Oui. Since I was very young." Amélie said.
"To keep your father away from entering your mind. He was just like me, but...bad."
"No need to comment the not so well kept secrets of my family, Miss Goldstein."
"Sorry. But, like I said before, people are easiest to read when they're hurting. And you've been hurting for a while now, because of the recent-" She closed her eyes roughly when Élie shut her mind before she could say anything.
"That's staying between us. Please." Queenie nodded with a very sad expression all over her face. "Merci."
"What are you all talking about?" Asked Tina when she approached the party. A bright smile over her features.
"Oh, nothing. School." Newt answered quickly. Rosier looked at him and now, they were even. He had changed the subject to give her a hand. She nodded swiftly this time and he returned the gesture.
"School." The girls repeated at the unison.
"Did...did you say school?" Asked Jacob. "Is there a school? A wizardry school here in, uh, America?"
"Of course. Ilvermorny. It's only the best wizard school in the whole world." Queenie answered.
"I think you'll find that the best wizarding school in the whole world is Hogwarts." Newt said.
"Or Beauxbatons." Amélie jumped into the conversation again.
"Hogwash." Queenie said mockingly before she started singing the anthem of her school. Tina was fast in joining her while the two men sat down to listen and the other woman simply crossed her arms over her chest. The five of them had bright smiled over their lips. Amélie and Jacob looked at each other and at Newt as espectators, trying to spot the same reactions on each other. But they found something more interesting. They found Scamander looking at the eldest Goldstein sister with such amazement and love...the guy was head over heels for her. The eyes of the witch and the muggle met again, both of them smiling tenderly as they realised what their friend had in mind, and looked back at the front as the girls finished their song. They all clapped, even the creatures clapped as the sisters bowed and thanked them. "Your turn." She said, smiling brightly at the other two wizards.
"Oh, no, I don't sing. Not Hogwarts' anthem, at least. I don't recall the lyrics." Said Newt. "Amélie, you sing." She laughed.
"Oh, Beauxbatons doesn't have an anthem, we just had a dance. Please don't ask me to dance, it's been years since I've done that." They all laughed and Jacob continued to humm the Ilvermorny song before he sighed.
"Oh, I wanna be a wizard." He said and Newt patted his shoulder. That's when thunder rumbled over their heads. The majestic Thunderbird was flying and his feathers looked blue rather than golden.
"Danger." Said Newt. "He senses danger." That reminded Amélie what she wanted to talk about in the first place.
"About that." She called the attention. "I think I have a lead." They all listened closely. "I think Percival Graves is not who he says he is. I think he's someone else."
"Who?" Asked Tina.
"The most wanted man in our world. Grindelwald."
"Impossible." Rosier shook her head at Tina's words.
"Not long after I left you on that rooftop, many Aurors found me and chased me, wanting to arrest me. And Graves was guiding them. He said he could take me in or I could join him. Why would Percival tell me that if we're working at similar a Bureaux? Whom else would ask someone to join him?" They remained silent. "And I know you're suspicious about him since the interrogatory." Newt nodded.
"It did sound odd his questioning about the Obscurus and the host. He asked if he was useless and it sounded as if...he wanted to use it. For what, I don't know." He said. "And I don't want to know."
"En effet. The other questions are, if he's pretending to be Graves, one: where is the actual Percival? And two: how many others could be infiltrated allies of Grindelwald? They could be anyone at the Ministries." Tina sighed.
"This is bad. Very bad." They all nodded. That's when they heard roars and things crashing loudly outside of the case.
"What the heck was that?" Asked Jacob and they all put on their coats before rushing outside. When they did, they found what looked like a dark cloud of sand destroying buildings and streets. "Is that it? That's the Obscurial thing?"
"That's more powerful than any Obscurial I've ever heard of." Said Newt as he stood on the edge of the roof. He took out his wand and looked at them all, specially Tina. "If I don't come back, look after my creatures." He handed the case over to her. "Everything that you need to know is in there." He gave her a notebook. He then looked at Amélie, spotting the tiny green fella in the pocket of her black coat. "Take care of him."
"What?" The girls asked at the unison.
"They're not killing it." He said with determination and jumped off the building to desappear midair.
"Newt!" Tina yelled before turning around to face the rest, she gave Amélie the case. "You heard him, look after them." She looked back at the front and disappeared from sight with the use of magic. Rosier turned to Queenie and gave her Newt's belongings.
"I have to help him and I need to catch Grindelwld."
"You're not even sure."
"True, but my hunch is rarely wrong." She stepped close to the edge of the building and disappeared just to appear behind a car, close to where the Obscurial was. She spotted Scamander couple meters in front of her, so, she moved to his position quietly as the muggles screamed and ran away.
"To survive so long..." Graves yelled at the Obscurial as Scamander and Rosier exchanged looks. "With this inside of you, Credence..."
"Credence? Who's Credence?" She asked Newt, whispering.
"The Second Salem boy." He answered, whispering back.
"Is a miracle." Graves continued. "You are a miracle. Come with me. Think of what we could achieve together." It was certain now, that was not Percival Graves. Credence's Obscurus threw itself against Graves, making him fall. And went by closely to where Newt and Élie were hiding.
"Newt!" Tina's voice called their attention.
"It's the Second Salem boy. He's the Obscurial."
"He's not a child."
"His power must be so strong he's somehow managed to survive."
"Newt, save him, Miss Rosier, with me." Both wizard and witch nodded and Amélie followed Tina the second she moved from her hiding spot. "We have to distract Graves enough to let Credence go so that Newt follows."
"Considérer que c'est fait." Answered the Auror, saying that it should be considered done. "You go first?"
"You go first."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, you go first." Élie shrugged.
"Alright. Graves!" The man turned around and Amélie threw a spell, that he barely blocked. A second later, Tina threw her own spell, then a second one; and he continued to block. She threw a third one and then Amélie sent two spells at him. He looked at her annoyed and when he attacked, she defended herself. The spells got connected and she grunted as she stood her ground, his attack was strong. That's when Tina attacked the man, but he stopped her spell with his bare hand.
"You two are always turning up where you're least wanted." He said. That's when he stopped the connection of the spells and threw a car at Tina while he threw a stunning spell at Rosier. Goldstein dodged while Amélie fell on her back roughly.
Both girls got up and rushed to the spot where they started hearing gunshots, that's where he'd be. When they arrived, they found the Aurors creating a protective dome to keep the muggles outside and prevent the Obscurial to get out. Obviously, because no one else knew Percival wasn't himself, he got in with no problem. The two women had to roll over the ground to get inside the magical field before it closed.
It took them a while to get into the subway, but when they did, they found Newt and Graves on the ground and the Obscurial on top of them, a second away from hurting them.
"Credence, no!" Tina yelled and Amélie stood behind. She knew seeing an unknown face could alter the boy even further. The dark shadow stopped its movements. "Don't do this. Please."
"Keep talking, Tina." Newt told her softly. "Keep talking to him. He'll listen to you. He's listening."
"I know what that woman did to you. I know that you've suffered. You need to stop this now." She started walking slowly towards the front. "Newt and I will protect you, as well as our friends. This man, he's using you."
"Don't listen to her, Credence." Said Graves, that's when Rosier started moving slowly to hide behind a column, to move forward towards him without being spotted. Not by him, or by Credence. "I want you to be free." He added. "It's alright."
"That's it." Said Tina as the darkness started to settle. Unfortunately, that's when an army of Aurors arrived, all of them pointing at Credence, whose Obscurial roared. "Shh." Tina tried to silence them. "Don't! You're frightening him."
"Wands down." Graves ordered. "Anyone harms him, they answer to me. Credence."
"Credence, shh." She tried, that's when the Aurors opened fire against him. The three wizards who were on the train tracks placed themselves close to the ground to avoid getting hurt. "No!" She yelled, as well as the other three. A distant scream was heard and, moments later, the darkness dissipated. That's when Tina and Newt stood and Graves made his way towards where Credence once was.
"Credence." He said. "You fools. Do you realise what you've done?"
"The Obscurial was killed on my orders, Mister Graves." Said the Madame President.
"Yes. And history will surely note that, Madam President." He started to step closer to where they all were, while Amélie moved as his shadow, quietly behind him. "What was done here tonight was not right."
"He was responsible for the death of a No-Maj. He risked the exposure of our community. He has broken one of our most sacred laws."
"A law that has us scuttling like rats in the gutter. A law that demands that we conceal our true nature. A law that directs those under its dominion to cower in fear, lest we risk discovery." He sighed. "I ask you, Madam President, I ask all of you...who does this law protect? Us? Or them?" He shook his head. "I refuse to bow down any longer." He turned around and started to walk away.
"Aurors...I'd like you to relieve Mister Graves of his wand and escort him back-" The gate closed itself with magic, cutting off his escape. He turned around, nodded his head and started walking towards where they all were.
They all started throwing spells at him, but with the use of a protective spell, he blocked them all and threw the spells back at them. When he was about to attack the President, Amélie used the spell Theseus had used on her years ago. She jinxed his shoe laces and his legs got together, making him stop walking, that's when Newt used one of his creatures to take a hold of his upper body and make sure he couldn't move even further.
"Expelliarmus!" Amélie disarmed Graves, his wand flying to her hand in a second. Her green eyes met Newt's as Graves panted. He nodded and she pointed at him. "Revelio." With a flick of her wand, his hair turned white, one of his eyes turned white and his skin turned paler. He smiled at the President when she approached him. Rosier stood by the entrance, right next to Newt and Tina.
"Do you think you can hold me?" He asked.
"We'll do our best, Mister Grindelwald." Seraphina looked at Rosier and she simply pointed at the shoe laces, letting his legs loose for him to be able to walk. Two Aurors took a hold of him, made him stand and made him walk towards the exit. Grindelwald stopped to look at the Wizards who had caught him. He looked at Newt first.
"Will we die just a little?" He asked, then, he looked at Rosier. "We could've done so much, and you could've gotten the family reunion you so surely longed for." She gulped and they made him walk away. She breathed out when he was far away from her sight and looked at the ground when she saw Tina and Queenie hugging.
"I figured someone ought to keep an eye on this thing." Jacob told Newt as he handed over the case.
"And I assume this petit gars mignon would like to be with you." Amélie told him as well, as she took Pickett from her pocket and placed it onto Newt's shoulder. He was indeed a very cute little guy.
"Thank you." He told them, both of them nodded.
"We owe you an apology, Mister Scamander." Said Picquery. "But the magical community is exposed. We cannot obliviate an entire city."
"Actually, I think we can." Said Newt. Everyone looked at him and, a second later, he had placed his case on the ground, opened it stepped in to get something and then stepped out, then he called Frank. Moments later, the majestic Thunderbird flew out of the case. When he was sitting on the ground, Newt stepped closer. "I was intending to wait until we got to Arizona. But it seems that now you're our only hope, Frank." The creature squeaked as Scamander caressed his feathers. "I'll miss you too." He showed Frank the bottle he had gone to find before he called him. "You know what you gotta do." He threw the bottle up and the agile bird caught it before taking flight.
Everyone looked at the Thunderbird get to the top of the clouds and saw how the clouds changed of colour before thunder echoed around and a blue light was seen far up above. Moments later, rain started pouring down.
That's when the Aurors got to work. Some of them teleported to the streets above them while some others stayed down low. All of them were going around the area of the city Credence had destroyed and repair the buildings, lampposts, cars, and everything that was wrecked by simply flicking their wrists. Every singe one of them looked like Orchestra Directors, moving their wands ever so gracefully to get the bricks, newspapers and pieces of metal back into place. Those that walked on top of the buildings also looked like dancers, moving to their own rhythm to make New York look like nothing had ever happened to it underneath the war rain.
Amélie had gone out to help with the tough task, but she returned to the subway station once she had made three buildings look like they once looked: good as new. There she found her new comrades.
"They won't remember anything." Newt told those whom were present. "That venom has incredibly powerful obliviative properties."
"We owe you a great debt, Mister Scamander." Said Picquery. "Now, get that case out of New York."
"Yes, Madam President." She turned around and so did all of the members of MACUSA. Only that, a second later, she turned back around, frowning.
"Is that No-Maj still here?" The four of them gave Jacob a quick glance, they exchanged looks and finally looked back at Seraphina. Their silence, and Jacob's very noticeable presence, was enough answer. "Obliviate him. There can be no exceptions." They all gave a step forward, trying to protest; but she simply placed her hand up and offered a sad smile. "I'm sorry, but even one witness...You know the law." Queenie looked down, she looked sadder than everyone else. "I'll let you say goodbye." With that, the President left.
They all walked closer to the entrance of the subway, the five of them standing at the edge of the stairs. Queenie reached out for Jacob, making him stop before he could step out of the glass roof that was covering their heads.
"Hey." He said and chuckled, as if he was trying to replace sadness with a laugh. Making the moment sweeter, even if everyone had that bitter taste in their mouths. "This is for the best. Yeah, I was...I was never even supposed to be here." Queenie started crying as Jacob's voice started to break. "I was never supposed to know any of this." He started crying. "Everybody knows Newt only kept me around because..." He didn't have an answer, he frowned to his own uncompleted sentence. "Hey, Newt, why did you keep me around?"
"Because I like you." Everyone smiled. Amélie looked at him and then at the ground. She knew that Newt was not very fond on people, Theseus had told her on one of their chats when they were kids. "Because you're...my friend." He added. "And I'll never forget how you helped me, Jacob."
"Oh."
"Hey..." Queenie said, stepping closer to Mister Kowalski. "I'll come with you." Both chuckled. "We'll go somewhere, we'll go anywhere." Jacob chuckled weakly. "See, I ain't ever gonna find anyone like you." Amélie started crying as she looked at the ground, remembering similar words she heard long ago.
"There's loads like me."
"No. No. There's only one like you." Tears fell from Jacob's eyes.
"I gotta go." He said after sighing. He turned around and Newt walked upstairs even further to stand beside him, as well as Tina.
"Jacob." He said.
"It's okay, it's okay." He sighed. "This is like waking up, right?" They all smiled at him. "It was nice meeting you all. Newt, Tina, Miss...French witch. I'm sorry, you said your name once, I think." She chuckled.
"It's Amélie, Mister Kowalski."
"Please, call me Jacob." She nodded and smiled.
"Jacob. It was my pleasure." He smiled and nodded before looking at Queenie. He just looked at her and she knew. Of course she knew, he didn't need to say all the words he'd like to tell her because she had already heard them in his head.
That's when he walked backwards and the water started falling on top of him, soaking his hair and clothes. He closed his eyes and looked at the sky, breathing in slowly. It took less than a minute for Queenie to place her wand up and create an invisible umbrella to avoid her clothes from getting wet and step closer to him. It took her half a minute to kiss him ever so tenderly to let him know all the words she didn't say because he could't hear them. Now everyone was crying.
With that, they all left Jacob standing there in the rain. When he opened his eyes, everyone was gone and it was, indeed, like waking up from the craziest, most beautiful and lovely dream he has ever had. Not even knowing when or why had he gone there. And, just like Theseus long ago, he woke up to the stain of a kiss that would remain there until God knows when.
