Chapter 12 BTS at KBS

Ki got to work early. She wanted to be at the department briefing. Technically, she had nothing to do with the visit. She wrote breaking news while this event was carefully crafted down to the minute detail. She'd already received her instructions to dress smartly and sit quietly and under no circumstances attempt to engage with the guests. Still, she just wanted to be in the room. It was like magic to her, seeing all the pieces come together, like a book's chapters coming together to create the perfect story. She was particularly amused by the reminder that all single women remain out of camera shot. The story was about the boys, not a potential dating scandal. And they all knew if ARMY saw a picture of any member with a girl, the stories would be more important than the facts.

When the shiny black vans pulled into the parking lot everyone rushed to the windows to watch the motorcade. It looked like the President himself was visiting. Even the people that had just moments before rolled their eyes and said they didn't know what all the fuss was about were now nose-pressed into the glass. She watched the cars disappear into the underground garage. Everyone slowly wandered back to their desks. After Ki had finished going through her emails, she headed to the kitchen to grab a drink.

She snapped open her juice and was about the take a drink when she heard a voice she thought she recognized.

Joon?

She froze.

Impossible. And yet? Could it be? He couldn't be here. They wouldn't even let him in the building. Especially not today of all days. Did he have a reason to be in the building? She heard the voice again. It couldn't be her imagination. The sound of that voice was carved into her chest. It was the voice that spoke to her when she had to make a decision, the voice she had chosen to be her guide and companion. She clutched her chest, remembering the pain of walking away from that voice.

Maybe she was hallucinating.

Maybe she was wrong.

The slight chance that she was right pushed her forward and the next thing she knew she was walking down the halls, trying to find the source of the voice. She turned a corner just as the voice disappeared behind a closing door.

The door clicked shut.

Was he behind that door? Was she brave enough to open it?

Impulse took over again and she walked boldly to the door, swung it open and stepped inside.

Six faces instantly looked up at her. She heard the soft click of the door shut behind her and the sound made her jump. Heavens. She was looking at BTS.

The conversation came to a stand still as the boys looked at her and then looked at Namjoon. He was usually the one that handled all the speaking. But he was leaning over a book so intensely his face was nearly between his knees. The boys looks at Namjoon, who was clearly not budging, and then each other. Jin, recognizing he was the oldest and the one most likely to talk to strangers, stood up. He was about to speak when he noticed her hands, or more specifically, her fingers. In perfect Jin fashion, he couldn't pass up a chance to make a joke. "They let a single woman in here? Wow, normally when we do interviews they hide you from us!" Jungkook and Hoseok chuckled, but the rest continued to stare.

Ki snapped to her senses and threw her hands behind her back. "Of course I am married. I am SOOO married. Totally married." The boys looked at her blankly. "Oh you mean this?" She held up her bare finger, "I....... used to be overweight. Like really overweight. I....... lost it! The fat, I mean, not the ring." She pointed suddenly at Jungkook who jumped as if he was being mugged, "I did Jungkook's workout. You know the one on Youtube. I did..... that.... and then my ring didn't fit. It was too big. It was so big, I had to take it to the jeweler to be resized. So.... yes... I'm married. I'm a married woman that just came in to make sure you didn't need something to drink or some snacks... maybe. Lemona, anyone?" Six heads turned to the table that was covered in bottles of water, various beverages, and snacks for days. She followed their gaze. Not only were the real faces of BTS staring, but they were joined by the dozens of BTS faces staring at her from the labels of the beverages, vitamin powders, and snacks that adorned the table. She flushed.

"Oh.... yes.... well.... I see you don't need anything so.... I'm just..... not married. I'm 24. Are you kidding me? And I've never been fat. I actually don't work out. Like ever. Sorry Jungkook," He gave a small nod, clearly bewildered by the conversation, "It's just my metabolism. It makes up for my very boring face. Anyway, I actually just came in because I thought I heard a voice I recognized. Not your voices. Of course your voices are very recognizable, they just aren't the voice I was looking for. I thought...... I heard....... a friend....who is definitely not you or here or will be...... ever. Why am I still talking, " she cringed, "Please don't tell anyone about this because I really like my job. Sorry to bother you." She turned, running straight into the door. Jimin winced on her behalf. She backed up, straightened her shirt, opened the door gently and walked out with the last shreds of her dignity. The boys sat in silence as they heard the door click closed.

Jin turned to his bandmates. "What was tha..." but he stopped when he saw Namjoon stand up and walk to the door. He stopped in front of it, staring at the handle. The boys watched in silence.

Just as he had abruptly walked to the door, he now turned around and sat back down.

Everyone was looking at Namjoon.

Jin broke the awkward silence, "That was crazy. I like her."

Jungkook laughed and said, "She's just your type. Doesn't know when to shut up." The boys laughed. Namjoon said softly, "She's not."

Yoongi turned to his friend, "She's not what?"

Namjoon turned to look out the window, avoiding eye contact, "His type." The boys gave each others looks from one to another.

Jin mocked offense. "I'm everyone's type. This handsome is WORLDWIDE. Maybe I'll ask for her number before I leave."

Namjoon retorted, "Don't get her fired."

Jin face straightened, "Are you ok? Are you nervous about the interview? We know it's a big deal, but we're all in this together. It's gonna be fine."

Namjoon turned back to his friends, "Yeah, of course, I'm fine. Not nervous at all." He reached for a bottle of water, cracked it open and began chugging it down. The boys looked at each other as if sending silence messages.

Taehyung looked at Namjoon. They had been friends for too long. He knew something was strange. He asked Namjoon, "Do you know her?"

Namjoon nearly choked on his water, "What? No! Why would I...."

Taehyung continued, "That's why you put your head down when she walked in the room. You are the voice she thought she heard." He folded his arms in self satisfaction. "The question is, why does she know your voice, but doesn't know your RM from BTS?"

All eyes were on Namjoon awaiting his response. What was he going to say? They all jumped as the door opened again. But it was no rambling single lady this time. It was their manager ushering them out of the room.

Yoongi gave Namjoon a look that said, "Don't think you are getting out of this."

Ki left in a hurry. She hated how her cheeks gave away her feelings. She ran to the bathroom and splashed her face with cold water. Then she remembered she was wearing mascara and frantically began trying to reassemble her face. After a few panicked minutes, Ki was able to leave the bathroom looking decent. She held her head up and walked down the hall. People were gathered around the monitors watching the interview that was happening live in the other room.

Crystal called her over, "Ki, come here. Look at RM's arms! They weren't kidding when they said he's been working out!" Ki rolled her eyes, but was simply happy to be acknowledged so she walked over. Suddenly she heard the voice again, but this time it was not coming from down the hall. It was coming from the screens in front of her. Ki froze in horror as she identified the voice ingrained in her brain. Without thinking she pushed through the crowd and placed both of her hands over RM's nose and mouth, mimicking a mask. She knew those eyes. She gasped.

"What are you doing?" People were murmuring behind her, but she didn't care. She moved her hands off the screen to cover her own mouth. "I assaulted RM while he was sleeping."

Crystal had made her way to the front and whispered, "What?"

She turned to her friend now, "Am I going to jail?! I don't want to go to jail." She turned back to the screen and watched Namjoon. She recognized the way he nodded his head, the way he sat in his seat. "No, he gave me the desk matt AFTER I slept with him, so he can't be that upset. Oh heavens...." she turned to her friend again, "He gave me a desk matt!" The words rushed out of her mouth as if they were poison, "He. gave. me. his desk matt. He thinks I'm a fangirl! I am NOT a fangirl. Dynamite's a bop, I admit that, but I am sooo not a fangirl." The realization hit her suddenly and as her face fell her voice rose, "It wasn't real. None of it was real. He played me!" She swung around and began marching away from the monitors. She turned to yell back at Crystal and while walking backwards blurted, "I hate him!" She swung back around and ran straight into the chest of a white t shirt and light blue sweater.

"You promised you wouldn't."

She looked up and caught his eyes. Those same eyes and that same mask. She hated that mask. A security member immediately grabbed Ki and began pulling her away. She elbowed the guard and growled, "He ran into ME, why are you yanking on me?" He hesitated a moment and looked to Namjoon.

"She's cool. You can let her go. It was my mistake."

She glared into his eyes, "Yes, it was." They both knew she wasn't talking about their collision.

The guard let go and took a step back. She realized the entire office was staring. Flustered, she began walking away. She heard Namjoon call after her, "You promised!"

Ki turned and instinctively stuck her tongue out at him and then kept walking. She heard some giggles and murmurs, but she didn't care. She didn't turn back. She walked all the way to her desk and sat down. If she wasn't going to jail, she felt she was definitely getting fired. She just been restrained by guards and stuck her tongue out at their honoured guests in front of at least 30 of her colleagues. She sat with her arms folded and furious. She wasn't going to cry at work. She looked down to see seven smiling faces staring back at her.

"Oh no, I don't think so! This is out of here!" With a swipe of her hand she moved all of her things off the matt and rolled it up in her hands and marched over to the rubbish bin. Just as she was about to chuck it in the bin, she hesitated. She was so angry, but she couldn't bring herself to throw it away. She justified it by reminding herself she could sell it online. Touched by the hands of RM himself. She bet it was worth money. A few people were staring at her again. Certainly the gossip would have found it's way to her department already. She smiled weakly, and still clutching the matt, went back to her desk. Just as she sat down, she saw her boss walking towards her. She immediately stood up and gave a bow. She remained with her head down until her boss was standing in front of her.

"Do you know Kim Namjoon?"

Ki looked up and met her eyes, but kept bowing. "Uhhhhh... sort of? I mean don't we all know him. He's one of the.."

Her boss cut her off. "Why don't we go have a chat in my office?"

Her boss was everything she wanted to be when she grew up. She was tall, powerful, and graceful. She did everything a man could do, and in heels. She sheepishly followed her hero to her office, ignoring the stares and whispers.

"I heard you put on a little show in front of the monitors and then yelled at South Korea's most beloved son."

She said it like a statement, but Ki knew it was a question.

"I was caught off guard. I'm sorry."

"You said you slept with him."

Ki's eyes shot up.

"Did I say that? I couldn't have said that. Did I say that out loud?" Her boss continued to stare at her. "No! Heavens no! I..." she didn't know why she started lying, but the story just started to pour out, "I fell asleep on a train once. And my head fell on the shoulder of the person next to me. I apologized and he said it was fine. The guy was in a mask, so I didn't know it was him. I didn't realize it until I heard his voice on the monitor. I just..........couldn't believe I'd had an encounter with a celebrity. Lucky me, right? What a shocker!"

"You work in a news station. You see celebrities every day." Her boss wasn't buying it.

"Yes, that's true, that's very true. Indeed. But like you said, he's South Korea's son. Seeing him on a train is just so unexpected."

Her boss leaned back in her chair and folded her arms, "Then what did he mean when he said you promised?"

"You... heard that?"

"The entire floor heard it."

Ki winced. And thought quickly.

"I didn't just nod off on his shoulder. I drooled a little bit. He told me to promise to never tell anyone. I thought I'd never see him again, so I agreed. I guess I just broke that promise, since I'm tell you now." Ki looked up to see if her boss was softening on the story.

"I guess if you promised, we won't be able to share this amusing vignette with our viewers. I suppose we could site an anonymous source..."

"No!" she nearly shouted.

Her boss tilted her head and looked at her curiously. "And why is that?"

"My most honoured madam director of the best job of my life, it's such an embarrassing story. I beg of you to let this one go." She bowed again.

"Interesting. We spoke with the BigHit team and they said the same thing. In fact, they said they'd be quite sad to learn that you were reprimanded in anyway for this misunderstanding. We agreed to let it go because we want them back when they win the Grammy. Curious they'd want to protect a stranger that embarrassed their prize idol on such an important day, don't you think?"

Ki let out a sigh.

"I'm so sorry for tarnishing this perfect day. Everyone worked so hard to make it go smoothly."

"On the contrary, you've made it even more memorable. And with everyone gossiping about you for the next few days, it means they will stop talking about who they think I slept with to get this job." Ki looked up at her startled. "Ma'am!"

But her boss was already shooing her away. "Just wait until you are in my position, you'll see how it is."

Ki left her office. She still had a job! That was unexpected. Then she stopped in her tracks. Did her boss say she'd be in her position someday? Ki beamed from ear to ear. With a new lightness to her step, she waltzed back to her desk. On her way, she leaned over her Crystal's desk and whispered, "Not fired."

Her friend gave a thumbs up and whispered, "I want details, let's grab a drink after work."
