Chapter 1: Zinnia
I was casually scrubbing the sidewalk while watching Orion when it all started to happen. My mother rushed outside and commanded for us to come inside. I have never heard Mother use so much force, I was in such shock I couldn't move. Orion slowly trudged towards me then grabbed my hand. I came out of shock and started to dash towards her, but tripped on a bucket that was left out. I was unable to walk because of the fall and surprise, so Mother darted outside and picked me up, but before I knew it, I was hurled onto the ground again.
It all happened so quick, but after it finished, I kept re-running it in my head. I couldn't believe it. I had just watched my mother push me out of the way to try to protect me but in her attempt, she was abducted.
I kept saying to myself that I imagined it all and mother was inside looking through the window right now to keep an eye on me and Orion. I kept saying it even though I knew that I couldn't and would never imagine my mother getting abducted by aliens. I slowly started to cry then felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Orion, he gave me a nice hug and said it would be ok.
I looked up at the sky to think and ended up seeing hundreds of ships surrounding us. I noticed that hundreds of things were landing on our earth and hundreds of people sat and cried as their loved ones were abducted or killed. I stood up and covered my eyes as a big blinding light showed up. An announcement from a creature popped up.
"People of earth, our planet has started to fall apart and we have come to find your home habitable for us. We need a place to stay while our home is re-built. While we live here, we will be making adjustments, but we will be living among you. Don't be afraid if anything happens. If a 'loved' one of yours was taken, they will be taught our ways and kept until we are to leave. We must teach humans to learn our ways to teach their young and offspring if we are to ever come back. If a 'loved' one of yours was killed, well, we can't help. They must've deserved it. If you would like to learn our ways, step to this blue plank. If you don't want to be killed as we re-build your world to fit us, step to this red plank. If you don't agree with our ways, you should hide because you won't survive for long. If you have any further questions, ask an alien at the front."
Two planks were placed down from a huge ship and Father slowly walked outside. "What are you doing?! Looking up at the sky, that's crap. You should be looking at the sidewalk and how dirty it is! It doesn't look clean to me yet!" He kicked some dirt onto the sidewalk and slapped me.
"Hello father, aren't you going to notice the ships surrounding our atmosphere?" I rubbed my sore cheek and looked at him. I wanted to tell him exactly how I felt. About life, Mother, Orion, him. Father paused.
"DON'T TALK BACK TO ME! OBVIOUSLY I NOTICED THE DAMN SHIPS! HOW COULD I NOT?! IM NOT DUMB! NEVER MIND THE SIDEWALKS, NOW FOLLOW ME! WHERE'S YOUR MOTHER?!" He shouted and looked at me as if he was daring me to tell him everything. He grabbed me and started to drag me to the big ship.
"She was abducted," I stole my hand back as he stopped, grabbed Orion and tied my hair back. Father Started to whimper, which I have never seen him do. I didn't care though. He whipped around and scowled at me.
"DONT MAKE UP STUPID STORIES! She's probably already on the ship making sure our new house is perfect for my arrival," grabbed my hand again and started to drag me and Orion to the ship again. I got a quick glance at his eyes and saw much more wrath then I have ever seen before. He dragged us up the red plank and didn't say another word.
On the ship I saw what looked like a huge forest. We were given a number and sent to houses that were on the ship. As I walked, I stayed behind Father and Orion a little so I could think to myself. When we reached the house, I was so lost in thought that I almost trampled over Orion.
"Hey, careful," Orion glared at me with hatred.
"Sorry Orion, I was thinking about mother. I miss her a lot, I bet you do as well," Orion didn't have to say anything after that, the look in his eyes was enough. He turned around and started to walk faster. I could tell something was on his mind, I just didn't know what.
I saw an alien and wanted to ask so many questions.
"Excuse me, I have a few questions for you," I stutterd scared of what it could do to me and what to assume and not to assume.
"Yes? Ask away," The alien said, it had a small robotic accent.
"Uh, How do you guys speak english and understand us?" I asked the first question. "Not all of us can speak your languages, some of us speak multiple of your languages. The reason some of us can speak human languages is because we have studied your planet for a while as we orbited space and dropped our more human-like aliens to learn your ways. Some of us use translators," The alien spoke very quickly and showed no sign of movement or emotion. It was like a hologram.
"How come you aren't killing us all off?" That was one of my biggest questions for the aliens.
"That question has been asked a lot, the question shall be answered on the next screen," The alien started to turn to the next human, but I still had questions.
Orion pulled on my arm once he noticed I was gone and dragged me to the house. Once inside the house, I realized it looked nothing like I was used to. It was a small house, but I had my own room. I had walls to block me out from father, I could contemplate my escape from father. I could think about everything I wanted to, by myself and wonder what life would've been like if I weren't in this family, or if Father was kind. I laid down on my bed and thought about Mother, how I missed her and what she would have done if she was still with us. I hoped she was still alive and survives the time in her 'prison'. I thought about Orion and what might be on his mind. I just kept on thinking that entire night. I didn't even fall asleep, I just thought to myself all night.
In the morning, I was allowed to stay in bed because Father was out and Orion didn't want to talk to me. I walked outside and saw flurries of people and aliens rushing around. I guess that last night, everyone started to get along. It was like an average day so I just decided to get dressed and start getting on my chores.
I was in the middle of watering the green grass when I was interrupted by a boy.
"Hello, um, what are you doing?" He asked me
"Watering the grass, can't you tell? Or have you never heard of laboured work? " I rudely said back with an eye roll
"Well, uh, yes actually. I used to clean the house all day. I actually did lots of this 'laboured work' you talk about because I had no one. Judging from you right now, I assume you have no one either. Also, the grass is all fake, Ms," He told me as if he felt my anger and sorrow. Then he smiled. I felt so stupid, but I didnt show that. I came back with a sassy and idiotic response.
"Oh, uh, I knew that. I just was cleaning it. It was very dusty from all that dirt the aliens keep flying around because of their ships," I threw the watering pail across the lawn, looked down and smiled awkwardly. I have never really talked to anyone other than Orion and mother or yelling at other kids to get off our freshly cleaned lawn or sidewalk like Father.
"Yeah, um, sure," He walked away and I wiped my brow then walked inside to make some lunch.
As soon as I finished making a sandwich for myself and Orion. Orion came and asked if lunch was ready yet.
"Yes. It is, here's a sandw-" Orion grabbed the sandwich and ran out with a small wave.
'Rude, he's never been like that before. Wait, doesn't he have tasks?' I thought to myself. I shrugged it off and went outside to admire the new view. I saw Orion running and playing with friends which was new. I sat and took it all in as if we were gonna live here for the rest of our lives. I thought about mother and wondered if she missed us or if she was glad to get away. I cried slightly at the thought of mother being happy to get away so I tied my hair back and sat up straight. I was lost in thought when the boy came back, he gave me a book and said
"Read it, it's a really good book. We have it on my planet." Then he scurried off before I had the chance to realize he said, 'my planet' as if he was an alien. He looked almost completely normal. Short, shaggy blond hair. Dark, round, hazel eyes. Tall build and wore normal clothes. I snapped out of my small and meaningless trance.
I picked up the book and tried to read it, but I couldn't understand a word. I dropped the book remembering I couldn't read well, or barely at all. I picked up the book again and slowly went over the words. I finally realized that he hadn't translated the book so it was harder to read than usual and tossed it back onto the ground.
Later that day, another announcement came on, but from a more human-like alien.
"People of the planet. We have started our re-building. If you're missing a family member, make staff aware and we will be sure to find them. No guarantee they will be alive. We will leave all the houses in the order they were. Our world of humans and snamuhs will be the first planet to get along. We will all live together in harmony. Here's what our planet will look like." A screen popped up beside the bigger screen. It showed the new worlds' finished look. It looked nothing like all the technology from movies, it looked all nice, green and fresh. It didn't look like we were going into the future. It looked like we were going back in time. To make everything nice and green again. It looked colourful and big. It had houses, schools, stores and lots of plantery. I saw our house and it was near an amazing looking school, greenhouse, lake and moss. Lots and lots of moss. Along with trees and so many sunflowers and dandelions. Tulips and roses. Our backyard would be covered in flowers. I saw lots of zinnias covering our garden. Zinnias are mothers favorite flowers. I saw pictures of Mother and Fathers wedding and Mother was holding a bouquet of yellow and white zinnias. I smiled at the thought. I was thinking about how me and Mother could go out each night to pick zinnias
"Now, you are all probably wondering why we aren't going to kill you all. The reason is because we understand this was your planet first and we are just your guests. We are leaving one day and this planet will need to stay intact if we ever have to come back. Also, why leave such a perfect place go to waste, it needs someone to care for it," The alien answered everyone's questions when a woman screamed all of the sudden. Everyone turned around, waiting for her to explain why she had screamed. Just silence. I turned back to admire the screen.
"MY CHILDREN ARE STILL OUT THERE! I CAN'T FIND THEM! THEY COULD BE KILLED!" I whipped my head around and saw worry on her face. I have never seen that on Father's face, but I have seen it on mothers face a lot.
"It's ok miss, we will find them. What's their ages, names and what were they last wearing?" an alien went to her side and started to calm her down but the woman freaked even more.
"Katy and Jacob, but I call them Kit and Jacky, Kit is 14 and Jacky is 5 1/2. Kit was last wearing a cream coloured shirt and a jean jacket. She had black pants. Jacky was wearing a green shirt with white stripes. He had jeans on. Kits' hair was in a short ponytail last time I saw her and Jakcys' hair was a mess. Kits' hair is strawberry-blond and Jackys' hair is auburn," She gave them a rushed report and then the aliens ran off to go find them. I felt bad for the woman. I knew the pain of having people you actually love being taken away from you.
I felt an arm grab me. It was Father and he wasn't happy.
"Where were you? Why is there a book crushing our lawns' perfect grass? Why isn't the house clean? Why weren't you watching your brother?" He demanded with force but in a lower tone. Maybe he was afraid the other parents would judge his reasoning of being mad. I sure would be.
"I saw the announcement and ran to it, I was cleaning and some random kid gave me the book. I was watching Orion but I thought he was in the crowd. Also, why did Orion get to play and not clean?" I looked at him in the eye and then looked down.
" He's 7, you're 15!" Father glared at me and slowly, carefully dragged me back to the house and it was unusual, but I enjoyed not being in pain so no complaints from me.
Later I was in my room thinking again. I finally came to the conclusion that life was stupid. I was starting to let feelings get to me. I sat up, and put on my game face. Feelings are stupid. I decided then and there, I would never show them. I would work harder than ever before and keep protecting the ones I love. I would never show anyone what I felt.
