Chapter 27: Fate's Reasons
"Kyt," Zim's hoarse whisper reached her in the dark. It was nightfall and they were hiding behind several buildings in the downtown of the city. They had escaped Zim's base without running into another set of troops; which was much to Kyt's joy. She could feel his cool gloved hand fumble around for hers. "Kyt... Can you tell me why..."
"Why what?" She said softly, peeking out from where they were hiding, waiting for Skoodge's signal to move. Gir and Gaz were ahead where Kyt could reach them easily if they ran into trouble. There it was; a green flicker among the stars. Instinctively, she tightened her fingers around Zim's hand and pulled him forward with her. We're so close.
"...Why him?" Zim's asked quickly, looking around. He could feel the pause in Kyt's mind; her thoughts slowing and zooming in on his words. Why him. Everyone always wondered why Dib Membrane. Why did she approach him the first day of school? Why did she continue to stick around him? Why did she care for him? Why did she 'love' him? Kyt tucked away in their new hiding spot, pulling Zim in. She sat in silence for what seemed eons.
"He was there," she began, poking her head over the dumpster. There were people fighting out in the streets ahead, rioting in fear and indulging in the moments of chaotic freedom that they had for the night. Kyt chose her words carefully. "After years of being looked over and never spoken to... Of always being ignored. He didn't do that. I existed to him and he took the choice of getting to know me more. Just simple reasons..."
"But you and Zim....Here we are now...." He whispered, fidgeting with her fingers nervously. Kyt pulled her hand away gently, to keep her balance as she scooted forward in a crouch. There were shouts of drunken men, crazed woman, young hooligans...
"We... We just kept running into each other." Kyt spoke out in realization. They had always met under strange circumstances, never by choice. Always thrown together by life. "And you... Didn't stop Tak when you had all the power to do so."
"But I'm here helping now," Zim growled softly, "I could easily turn back to my Irken kind. Zim knows all your weakness, all your filthy faults."
Skoodge's signal went off again. Zim was right behind her as they drew nearer to the chaos. It was an absolute purge. The police themselves were unable to constrain every citizen or just a single group. They were a herd of animals with fear as their only guide... Kyt didn't pause to think, "But you wouldn't. You won't."
A sigh eased its way from her lips, her iridescent green eyes flickering to the stars. Not so long ago they had been among those stars, where everyone only dreamed they could go, only to land back on this mess of a planet. The only reason she was even there was Zim. If he hadn't messed up his experiment on Irk years ago, if he hadn't of banished Tak... None of this would have happened. It all went back to Zim, she always ran into Zim. Here she was trying to right all of his wrongs, having betrayed her own brother for him. Fate threw them together, always back to him. A small sarcastic laugh clawed its way up her throat. Fate even killed Dib off, just so I could sit here with Zim. Fate... What do you want me to even say? What do I have to do?
"Curiouser and curiouser," she mumbled softly just as a different signal from Skoodge went off. Something had gone wrong. Someone was in trouble- someone could be hurt someone could die... Kyt's mind was reeling as she bolted forward. Gaz could be hurt. Gir could be hurt. A brief wave of worry for even Skoodge hit her.
Without a thought for the warning signal, Zim grabbed her wrist. He didn't know what words to say that could match everything jumbled up in his head. Every strange, sickening feeling in his squeedley-spooch. He had to know. He tightened his clawed grip against her struggle, feeling her skin grow hot through his gloves. "Kyt I have to know how you feel. I have to know."
He felt her struggle stop and her body stiffen. Her head turned, her glowing eyes met his wide maroon hues. Her breathing was heavy as she struggled to form words, the lights in her eyes wavering, "Now isn't the time... Gaz. Gir. Skoodge. We can't... I can't."
"Then when? You always run off... You find some excuse, you monkey!" Zim snapped, "I never know. Zim has been among the enemy for you. He turned against his own kin. Even Skoodge."
Kyt stared at him feeling her frustrated tears drop slowly, washing the grime of death and dirt on a trail down her cheeks. Her emotions mixed. She needed to save her- no. Their friends. But at the same time, it dawned on her that he was against his own kind for her. He was risking everything for her. Even when he wouldn't save her from Tak's bullying, she realized how little that was compared to how he risked his life and sanity for her. How he acted and lied to his kind. How he was risking his position as an invader and possible future leader for her. Always for her.
This has to be brief. Can't waste more time...
"Zim," she said quietly, grabbing his wrist to pull him closer and turning her body around almost like a dance. She watched his serious expression; authoritative. Menacing and strangely beautiful even though he lacked certain human features. He was clearly alien. But so am I, Kyt scoffed to herself, feeling where her wings fit into the grooves of her spine.
Without wasting another second. She reached up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips against Zim's. It wasn't the same fluttery feeling that she got with Dib. It was stronger, like gleeful punches to her chest. There was a hint of urgency, of need, the moment Zim kissed back after his initial shock. His lips weren't the leathery feel or any other strange texture she had expected, they were rather human. Strangely human.
They let their lips linger until Kyt pulled away, her wings widespread. She didn't say a word as her feet went off the ground and her body left the Earth he stood on physically, but his squeedley-spooch was flying, too. There wasn't a need for words.
He finally had his answer.
