Chapter 46: The Past is Hard to Bury

3rd Person's POV

The group of travelers were walking through the forest on foot. Arrosa was at the back, as always, keeping to herself. She was thinking to herself about many things; Naraku, the others, the sacred jewel, etc. There were so many things flooding her mind that it was somewhat hard to focus.

As they walked, Izayoi noticed Arrosa in the back. She felt really bad for the priestess. In a way, Izayoi knew how she felt. Of course Izayoi's Father wasn't the evil Naraku bent on destroying her and trying to turn her into a killing machine but still.

Iziyaoi stopped walking and waited for Arrosa to catchup. "Hey Arrosa," Izayoi said to the priestess.

"Hello," Arrosa whispered back.

Izayoi sighed. She didn't want Arrosa to be stuck in her shell. It just wasn't right. I wish there was some way I could make her feel better, Izayoi thought as they walked. Maybe I....

Suddenly, Arrosa came to a stop. She looked to her left but all that was there were trees, at least, that's what it seemed like to the others. However, to the young priestess, in that direction was something very important to her.

Arrosa then broke into a run to the left and ran as fast as she could. "Arrosa," Izzy shouted. "Where are you going?"

"I need to check on something!" Arrosa shouted as she ran through the woods.

"Come on," Ayuma said. "We need to make sure she's safe."

********************

Arrosa ran for several minutes until she finally came to a clearing where an old hut, that was in shambles, was falling apart. Arrosa slowly made her way to the hut as memories flooded into her mind;

Flashback

4-year old Arrosa sat on the ground, playing with an old doll her Mother had brought her. She moved the doll left and right and held it closely to her chest in a tight hug. As she played, she would look up at her Mother every now and again to see her Mother hanging up the laundry to dry or something like that.

Kikyo looked Arrosa every now and again too and would smile each time she would look at her child. Even if her Father was Naraku, Arrosa was so sweet and innocent that it was a hard fact for Kikyo to believe sometimes. "Mother," Arrosa spoke. "Can I ask you a question?"

"What is it Arrosa?" Kikyo asked, stopping the current chore she was doing.

"Well, I was wondering, why don't we live in a village with other people?"

Kikyo frowned a little. She didn't have the heart to tell her child the truth about her, not yet anyways. She didn't want her child to fear her Mother, but she would need to know at some point in her life. Still, the thought of Arrosa hating her gave Kikyo nightmares.

The priestess kneeled down so she could look her child in the eyes. "Arrosa, I can't tell you yet," Kikyo replied. "But I promise that you will know when you're older. Understand?"

"Yes Mother,"  Arrosa replied.

Now, in real time, Arrosa looked into the hut and found the old doll she played as a child. The doll still had its hair and clothes on but it was stil faded and old.

More memories soon flooded back.

Flashback

6-year old Arrosa tried her best to steady her arrow as she aimed for a tree. When the arrow was released, it went right past the tree though. "It's no use," Arrosa sighed. "I'll never be as good as Mother."

The young girl then made her way back to her hut and saw that her Mother was cleaning around the house. Kikyo smiled when she saw that her daughter was coming back from her training in the woods. However, Kikyo noticed the saddness in her child's eyes. "What's the matter Arrosa?" Kikyo asked.

"Mother, I'll never be as good as you," Arrosa admitted as she slumped down to the ground.

"Why do you say that?"

"I can't fire an arrow, and my spiritual powers haven't even appeared yet."

Kikyo sighed and then sat next to her daughter, wrapping her arm around the child. "I know it's hard for you right now Arrosa, but sometimes things need time to become great."

Arrosa smiled slightly and placed her head on her Mother's shoulder. "I guess you're right."

Arrosa's old bow she had as a child was on the floor; its string broken after all the years. "This place," she said to herself. "Why is it that even though the memories of love are here, why is that I still feel scared whenever I think of here?"

Then Arrosa looked out to the field that surrounded the hut.

Flashback

8-year old Arrosa ran to her with medicinal herbs that her Mother had instructed her to pick. "Mother," she called out. "I brough the-"

Arrosa stopped dead in her tracks. She saw her Mother standing in a field with strange, white creatures surronding her. There were white things that were in their claws and when they approached Kikyo, the white items in their claws would be absorbed into the priestess' body. Arrosa stared in awe at the event.

The creatures soon left Kikyo and disappeared into the air.

Kikyo sighed to herself. I wish I didn't have to do this, she thought.

"M-M-Mother?" Kikyo turned when she heard her daughter's voice and saw the child standing at her side.

"Arrosa? How long have you been standing there?"

"Uh......just a.....little while....."

Kikyo turned her back to Arrosa, not wanting to look at the child. "I wish you hadn't seen that."

"But Mother, what were those things? What were they giving you?"

"Come inside so I can explain everything to you," The two soon made their way into the hut and when the fire was lit, Kikyo told the 8-year old her story;

"50-years ago, an object called "The Sacred Jewel" came into the world. It was the forced-out soul of the priestess Midoriko, a powerful priestess who was known for her strength against demons. The jewel had the power to grant any wish and make demons more powerful. The jewel was impure so demon slayers gave the jewel to a powerful priestess who could purify the jewel. As she carried it around with her, more demons attacked her.

"One day, a half-demon appeared, wanting to use the jewel to become a full demon. Every day, the half-demon tried to take the jewel, but every time he failed. As time went on, the priestess soon developed feelings for the half-demon, and the half-demon developed feelings for her. They agreed to use the jewel so the half-demon could become human.

"Their plans, however, did not go well. A spider demon transformed himself into the half-demon and attacked the priestess. He took the jewel and then attacked the half-demon, tricking the half-demon and priestess into fighting each other. The half-demon tried to get away with the jewel, but with the last of her strength, the priestess bounded the half-demon to a sacred tree that had a seal on it that would make the half-demon sleep forever. The priestess requested that she be burned with the jewel, so that it would be lost to this world, forever."

"But Mother," Arrosa said after her Mother finished. "What does that story have to do with the creatures?" Slowly, Arrosa's mind wandered and then she finally put the pieces together; "That priestess, was you wasn't it?"

Kikyo nodded. "50 years later, after my death, I was resurrected by the demon witch Urasue. I am the walking dead, kept to this world only by the souls of the departed."

"What does that make me?"

"You are alive Arrosa. Unlike me, you are not of the walking dead, but of the living."

"Mother."

"I understand if you hate me now."

Arrosa looked at her Mother's saddened face before hugging her. "I don't hate you. I love you. You're my Mother. I will always love you."

Kikyo wrapped her arms around her child. "And I will always love you."

Now, Arrosa stared at the field. "I will always love you Mother," she whispered. "You will always be in my heart."

"Arrosa!" The priestess turned to see the others had arrived.

"What are doing Arrosa?" Mochigo asked.

Arrrosa sighed. "I'm reliving my memories."

So that's some history on Arrosa's childhood. Please comment and vote on it guys! Thanks!
