Chapter 26.

Four years later

ROSALIE (AMETHYST)

"Little one, it is time to stop pretending and open your eyes." I say to her as I open the curtains to illuminate the room. I could hear Amelia holding in her giggles under the blanket.

"You won't have ice cream this week if you choose to still sleep." I say in a sing-song voice.

"I am awake, mummy." My three years old ball of energy springs up from under the blanket, faking a yawn and grins, exposing her perfect set of teeth. This trickster and her antics!

"Good morning, mummy." She says in a cute voice. I take her in my arms and spin her gently before placing a kiss on her forehead.

"I was getting prepared to call the monsters under your bed." I tease and watch how she curls her toes, widening her eyes in freight before hiding her face on my bossom.

"Monsters?!" She says with fear in her voice, resulting into a chuckle from me. At least this will do the trick for the end of this week. I carry her to the bathroom to perform her morning ritual which is bathing.

My heart drops as I study some of her features, she sure did not get her eyes from me but then, who did she get it from? I cannot remember anything from six years back. The only thing I know is that a woman said she found me beside a pile of burnt vehicle parts without any means of identification.

The first time I had woken up in a strange place, the woman was with me all through. She told me how she found me and asked for my name. That was when I thought and my mind was blank! Empty! I could not remember anything.

Initially, I thought I would recover after some months but here we are, six years after and not a single memory of the years which I had forgotten came back to me.

Luckily, the woman who found me was on a visit to America, so on her way back here, she took me with her and that is how I landed myself here in Canada. I later got to find out that her name is Mrs. Sadie Williams and she is very influential in this country, hence her ability to bring me in.

My sadness was heightened on the day I found out I was pregnant. My walls came crumbling down my feet like someone had hit it so hard and with so much force. How do you tell your child that you don't know who their father is, not because you don't want to know but because you simply cannot remember, no matter how much times you tried to. Sadie let me stay in her house, or should I say mansion, for a while as she used to be hardly ever around.

The day I gave birth to Amelia, I made a promise to myself to love her and be the best mother she could ever have. Her presence gave me new found purpose and so in the next one month, I went on a job hunt but it was difficult as I didn't have any IDs or proof of qualification. I told Sadie of my challenge and she was against the idea of me working. We had formed a great bond and she often referred to me as her daughter. She adopted me legally, strange as it sounds and my name became Rosalie Williams.

I later got employed as a waitress in a big restaurant. A year later, I moved out of Sadie's mansion because I sometimes felt like a burden on her. As opposed to my thoughts, she did not feel like I was extra baggage in anyway.

Over the years, my job as a waitress has been wonderful so far as my work place is an amazing environment to be found. Also, through my hardwork and consistency, I was promoted to position of Head waitress and the pay increased too.

I rented a small house just close to where I work but Sadie insisted she paid the mortage for the property instead. The neighbours here are really nice and never fail to check on one another.

At first, I chose not to be too involved in the affairs of the neighbourhood. However, they kept showering me with so much love to the extent that I just had to give in. I feel Amelia splash water on my face.

"I have been talking to you, mummy." She points up, a scowl on her face.

"Sorry, baby." I tickle her.

"I want pancakes for breakfast." She pleads, giving me puppy dog eyes. That is her favorite food, she could eat it all the days of her life and never get tired.

"Oh no, baby. I made toast already. You could have pancakes tomorrow." Thing is, I sometimes resist her persuasive looks. Unlike me, she has Sadie wrapped around her tiny little fingers. That woman is the definition of a perfect grandma when it comes to her. She dotes on Amelia and does her bidding.

"Okay." She says in a low voice before returning to her bubbly self.

Bath time is always fun because it is basically play time too. Whenever I am done with bathing her, the floor gets filled with water and I become wet from all the splashing we do.

"Time for School and I have to go to work, too." Oh, did I add that it is a work day?

I dress her up and quickly go to have my bath, making sure to leave the bathroom door slightly open so I could monitor her from in here.

After my bath, I quickly dress up and we have our breakfast before heading out.

"Hello, Mrs. Doe." I say a greeting to my next door neighbour, all smiles.

"Good morning, Rose. How is little Amelia doing this morning?" She gestures to her as she fondles with her cheeks while Amelia sends her a toothy grin.

"She is fine, thank you." I reply and greet all other people on my way to dropping her off to school.

"Be a good girl and always remember, Mommy loves you." I kiss her on the cheeks and she whispers a 'Mimi loves mummy too' as I drop her off at school. I head to the restaurant, all alone in my car. I miss my Amelia already.

I pull up in the driveway as I arrive at the front of the restaurant, easing off my seatbelt, I get down, breathing in the morning's fresh air.

"Morning, Russell." I greet my boss as I walk into the restaurant. He is not the owner, per say, his work as a manager makes him in charge of everyone here.

"Ava!" I squeal, hugging my friend, the moment my eyes land on her. She is the closest friend I have here.

"A very good morning to you, Paula." I greet the head cook, who is the oldest here and treats everyone with love and respect. She returns my greeting with a smile and walks up to hug me, ruffling my hair in the process.

I just laugh and say a hello to my other co-workers before heading to the locker room to get changed into my uniform which was a combo of navy and light blue. I am the only one who wears this colour combination of work uniform amongst the waiters/waitresses since I am the head waitress, the others wear black and white uniforms. It is the same style as mine for the ladies, the men put on trousers and shirts. As I go back to where everyone is, Russell calls me to his office for a brief talk.

"Rosaline, the new owner is coming today and I want you to attend to him." He says, looking rather terrified.

"Okay." I say, holding back my laugh as I see the brave Russell cowering in front of me just because of the said boss.

"Hey, Russell. Stay calm, how bad could he be? You look freightened." I nudge him playfully on his shoulder because it seems funny and different and I could not hold back the urge to do it. I burst out in laughter at his current state.

The truth about me and him is, we are very close friends and he even knows about my amnesia. We are not going out, please he is not my type. He and Ava are an item and I am so happy for both of them as they are my friends.

"You think I am overreacting, Rose?" He asks and I nod a 'yes' to him.

"The last time he came here with his late father, he scared the shit out of all of us." He states.

"How come I don't know him?" I ask.

"Because you needed to attend to Amelia due to her sickness that day. Plus, the visit by him was impromptu." He states.

"So, this scary owner, I get to be at his beck and call today?" I ask.

"Yes." He answers back.

"Why me?"

"Because you are perfect for the job, Rosaline. Plus, you are the head waitress so if there is anyone for this job, it is you." He states, matter-of-factly.

"Alright." I nod my head slightly. "Any other thing?" I ask.

"None for now. How is Amelia?" He asks, smiling at the mention of my daughter's name.

"She is great." I respond.

"We have missed her presence around here. Please bring her to see us soon." I laugh and nod in response.

"You may take your leave." He says and I turn to take my leave. The restaurant is buzzing with activities as it is quite popular around here so it is usually filled with customers.

"Order for table 2, John. You all need to be fast." I say, shouting out orders and supervising attendance to customers.
