Chapter 21
WHY WOULD I WRITE A FANFIC ABOUT NIALL AND HARRY'S ACTUAL SISTER that is all i have to say here, carry on
*******
My fingers lightly tap against the steering wheel, creating an nonexistent beat as I stare out the windshield of the car. I've been sitting and just looking at the small building a few feet away for around five minutes, and I still haven't figured out whether or not I should go out. I mean, she knows this car, she knows I'm supposed to be here, why bother going out?
Then again, it would be awkward if she just came in and I started driving. But what am I supposed to say to her if we're standing out in ten inch deep snow? Besides, it's warmer in the car. But I wouldn't be even able to look at her properly, and then it'd be awkward if she just caught me staring at her in the rear view mirror. And if I stare at her for too long, then I might crash into something. God knows how inconsiderate some drivers can be. But wait, wouldn't that make me an inconsiderate driver? No, I wouldn't want to-
Oh, to hell with it. I shake my head lightly, putting an end to the train of thoughts that were becoming more ridiculous and irrelevant by the second, and open the door of the car. I don't bother locking it as I slam the door shut, I'm gonna be back in there in a matter of minutes.
Just as I start walking around it, I notice the door of the diner opening, and a familiar figure walking out. I sigh and lean against the hood of the car, watching her as she checks if the door is locked multiple times. She turns around a few seconds later, her arms crossed and even when I'm twenty meters away from her, I can see the nervous look on her face. Although, that expression vanishes when she spots me, and she even smiles as she starts walking toward me, staring at her feet the entire time. So she'd see where she's walking. Or because she's still trying to hide her smile.
I lean off the car, wiping off the snow from my jeans, and take a few steps forward when she's near enough, until we're standing right in front of each other. She has her lips between her teeth as she looks up at me, a bit hesitantly, while my expression remains blank. Then she looks down at her feet again, kicking the snow like a child, the pom of her beanie catching my attention for a few moments.
This is why I should have waited for her in the car. "Hi," I finally say, my voice almost cracking due to not speaking for quite some time. I clear my throat as she looks up at me, looking a bit relieved that I'd said something first.
"Hi." So, we've been standing in front of each other for a minute straight, and all we've managed to do is say hi. That's good enough, I guess.
"Shall we?" I ask, almost stuttering as I point behind me at Seth's car. She nods and looks at the ground again as she walks to the car; well this isn't going to work if both of us are acting like we can't speak English.
I'd unlocked the door on the passenger's side before leaving the car, so we're both in at the same time. "Is there any... place you wanna go to?" I ask slowly, careful not to mess up any of the words. If I'm doing all of the speaking, I might as well do it right.
"Uh, yeah," She says sitting up as I start the engine. "Do you know where Pearson High is?"
I frown, "The high school?"
"Yeah."
"No," I shake my head, furrowing my eyebrows harder; why would she want to go to a high school at half past ten at night?
"Could you give me your phone then?" She asks, her tone timid again. "You know, so I could type in the address?"
"Yeah, but..." I blink a few times while pulling out my phone, deciding not to ask what we're going to be doing there. I'd probably get in a car crash if I knew what's going on in her head.
"Okay, here you go," She hands me my phone back, and I sigh when I see that it takes approximately 4 minutes to get to this school by car. Which means four minutes of either gawky silence or gawky words.
"So, how've you been?" I ask, my voice a little high-pitched. Gawky words it is.
"Good," She says, nearly sounding like she's choking on the word. "What about you?"
"Good too."
It didn't really occur to me that it might be bungling silence and words. But here we are, sitting five inches apart, she's picking at her nails while I'm humming along to Unbelievers by Vampire Weekend, that can only be faintly heard from the radio.
"Well," I start, after stopping the car a couple of minutes later, and looking outside the window on her side. "I think... this is it?" I'm pretty sure this is it, I'm just not sure if she's really serious about it being our destination.
"Yeah, let's-let's hurry up," She says, the door on her side already opened while I'm still unbuckling my seatbelt. I can't tell if she's excited about something or anxious about it; the fact that we're on a high school yard makes me nervous either way.
"What are we doing?" I ask loudly as I exit the car too, frowning at the unpleasantly low temperature. "Where are we going?"
"Just follow me!" She tells me, just as loud, but unlike me she sounds excited. I sigh and shake my head as I lock the door of the car, and then the door on her side too; who knows what she has in that peculiar mind of hers?
"Could you at least wait for me?" I shout, seeing as she's already practically jogging through the yard. "Not everyone has legs as capable as yours."
At my words, she slows down and throws her head back; if I was any closer to her, I'd probably hear her groaning too. "Why so cranky, Niall?" She asks in an amused tone as she turns around, just as I'd caught up to her.
I don't know why, but looking at her right now makes me think about all the things that Harry told me a few days ago; everything, from her relationship with her father to her relationship with Craig. And even after going through all of that and the things that I said and put her through, she still finds me worth her time.
"Niall?" I blink as I hear her voice, interrupting my thoughts. Her face isn't amused anymore, I'm confused because she actually looks worried. "Look, I know that you're still angry and I don't blame-"
"No- no." I shake my head curtly, a little hesitant about taking her hand but I do it anyway. "Let's go, okay?"
It breaks my heart that she thinks I'm still angry at her, because I'm honestly not, but I'm not really sure whether or not I should tell her about the little talk I had with Harry. I guess I'll decide after this – whatever the hell this is.
She gives me a tight smile and squeezes my hand, starting to walk down the snowy pathway, me following her. "Um, could you tell me what we're doing though?" I repeat my question from before.
"No, it's a surprise," She says, but I can hear the smile in her voice again. "I wanna show you something."
I nod and purse my lips; if we were at her apartment or mine or something, I'd have an idea what that could be. But now, out in the middle of nowhere on a Monday night, I'm clueless.
"What- where are we going now?" I ask, frowning as she pulls me toward an exit; she could have just told me to drive around. "Is this a shortcut to somewhere or-"
"No, no, this is just where I put it."
"Put what?"
Instead of answering me, she lets go of my hand, just in front of the tall wire fence. I follow her out of the yard, to see her kneeling, and digging through the snow on the other side of the fence. "Um... what exactly are you doing?"
I finish my question just as she pulls out a plastic bag, looking relieved that she'd found it. "Okay... what do you think this is?" She asks as she pulls out a large, red tube, and throws the bag away.
"Um..." I take a step back from her entertained self, now completely baffled by whatever it is that she's doing. I can barely even see her face, since the only light that's surrounding us is the one from the street, which seems a mile away. Even so, I can tell that she's waiting for an actual answer to that question. "A rocket?"
I'm relieved when she chuckles; at least one of us isn't feeling fidgety about the whole thing. "Close," She tells me, taking a few steps closer to me while I try taking a few away from her, but end up colliding with the tall fence behind me. "Could you hold it?"
Managing not to widen my eyes until they've basically fallen out of their sockets, I stretch my arm out and take the object from her. "You have gloves?" She asks, even though I'm obviously wearing gloves.
"Uh, yeah?"
"Alright," She mumbles, taking a lighter out of her pocket and bending over so she could reach the end of the tube. Wait, what?
"What-what are you doing?" I frown for the hundredth time, "What is this, dynamite?"
She slowly looks up at me, a skeptical expression on her face and I can almost feel the sarcasm coming. "Yeah, Niall, I'm gonna blow you up," She says in a loud, flat tone and, well, her answer wouldn't be as disturbing if she didn't put 'up' at the end of that sentence.
"Oh, okay," I reply, narrowing my eyes at her as she tries lighting the end of whatever it is that I'm holding. "Good thing I have my gloves on then."
"Just shut up," She mutters again and takes a step back, and I look down just in time to see a flame disappearing inside the tube; okay, now I'm freaked out.
"What the hell is-"
"Just hold it tight, okay?" She cuts me off, but it's not helping.
"I'm gonna throw it if you don't- fuck!" I shout as a little fireball bursts out of the tube, flying to the sky. "What the-" I cut myself off as it erupts high above us, sending purple and green sparks everywhere. Making me smile. "Fireworks? Are you kidding me?"
"Do you like it?" The brunette standing a couple feet away from me asks, a satisfied grin on her face. I mean, if someone had asked me to make a list of things that make me happy, I definitely wouldn't put fireworks on it. But I find it impossible to not be happy right now.
"Isn't this illegal? Where did you even- oh, holy shit," I mutter as another flaming ball flies up, in the same direction as the last one; only this one sends red and blue sparks across the sky. She wasn't kidding when she told me to hold it tight.
"Three more to go," She says loudly, with a smile that could light up any room better than these fireworks that I'm holding. "Do you think you could hold it with one hand? To your side?"
Her question is a little confusing, but after the third firework I grip the tube with my left hand and carefully move my arm to my side, cautious not to hurt myself or let it slip from my hand. By the time that I turn my head to look at her again, her face is two inches away from mine, scaring me a little; she giggles as I wince in fear, and I have to fight the urge to roll my eyes at her.
"That wasn't very-" Before I can finish my sentence, her hands are on my face, and her lips pressed against mine and- ah, kissing under fireworks. I get it now.
I wrap my right arm around her waist, counting the fireworks until I'm sure there aren't any left. After the fifth one, I throw the tube in an unknown direction and put my other arm around her waist, lifting her in the air. She yelps into our kiss, making me laugh slightly and place her back on the ground. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss this; miss her, and it concerns me that no matter what either of us does, we're probably going to end up here every time.
"God, I could just..." She begins, pausing to press another hard kiss to my lips, followed by a few shorter ones. "Kiss you for the rest of my life."
I grin at her words, pulling her body closer to mine so I could connect our lips for longer than just a few seconds. "That sounds promising."
"Mhm," She hums against my lips, "Does it mean that I've been forgiven?"
I open my eyes as she keeps pecking my lips, her actions amusing me. "Well," I mutter, looking around as if thinking about the answer. "I guess. You should thank Harry for it."
At my words, she stops her actions, keeping her face close to mine nevertheless. "What?" She mumbles, leaning away from me to get a better look of my face. Probably so she'd see if I'm kidding her. "Harry?"
"Yeah," I lick my lips, "He kind of... told me everything."
This time she takes a step away from me, but I manage to pull her against me again. I'm really not in the mood to bicker with her, nor am I gonna listen to her if she starts denying things. I understand that she's not comfortable with being completely honest with me; all I want is for her to accept that I know about her background and to stop pushing me away from her.
"He... told you everything? Everything?" She gulps as I nod firmly. "And you're here?"
I'm a little taken aback by that second second question of hers; I was expecting her to say 'my brother is an asshole' in French or something. "Um, yeah?" I almost ask, my brows raised and a small smile on my lips at her unsure expression. "If he hadn't told me... everything that he did tell me, I probably wouldn't be here."
She nods, pressing her lips together, looking a little impressed slash surprised. She clearly didn't think that Harry telling me about her would have a good outcome. "I don't appreciate him enough."
I frown but breathe out a laugh at her statement, "Can a person like him be appreciated enough, though?" I comment with a smile, to have her roll her eyes and put her arms around my neck.
"You just met him, give him some time." She nods at me reassuringly, making me chuckle. "Did you like the fireworks?"
"Loved them," I smile and glance at her lips; she catches the hint and places her hand on the back of my neck, pulling me down to her.
"Hey!" Our actions are stopped by a loud voice not far from us; I look up to see two older men running toward us, both shouting words that I can't exactly understand. But one thing for sure; we're screwed.
"Shit," She mutters, grabbing my wrist and starting to run the opposite way, back to where we came from. I almost topple over at the suddenness of her moves, but she keeps running in spite of that.
"What- what the hell are we doing?" I almost shout; half of everything that I'd said tonight begins with 'what'.
"Running from angry residents, what do you think we're doing?" She shouts back as I finally catch up to her so she's not pulling me with her.
"What?!" I yell, glancing over my shoulder; this is a suburban area, those people could be calling the police because of the fireworks, for all I know. "No, we can't just-"
"Niall!"
"No, Freya-"
"Just keep running, will you?" I can tell that she's a little aggravated as we get to the car, but then she turns around, her back pressed against the door on the driver's side, and a wide grin on her face that stuns me for a second. Then I realize what made her so happy; I'd just said her real name, for the first time.
I open my mouth to tell her to go to her side of the car, but she shuts me up by putting her hands on my cheeks and giving me a kiss that almost causes me to pass out right on the spot; if I knew that saying her name would make her this happy, I would have done it half an hour ago.
I manage to kiss her back, blindly trying to find the keyhole of the car to unlock it. I wrap an arm around her waist as I find it, pulling her away from the door so that I could open it. "Alright, get in there," I breathe out, pushing her inside first and waiting for her to crawl to the passenger's side. We just can't afford wasting time.
Slamming the door shut, I look in the rear view mirror to see the two men walking toward the car at a fast pace; by now they've realized that they can't catch up to us, but I still feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest because we were caught either way.
"Buckle your seatbelt," I say as I clear my throat, abruptly starting the car, probably crossing the limit in under five seconds.
"Woah," Freya says, gripping the dashboard in front of her. "Slow down!"
"I told you to buckle your seat-"
"We're gonna get pulled over by the police if you don't!"
I take a deep breath through my nose, gradually slowing down until I'm driving at a normal speed. "Where'm I driving?" I ask, glancing over my shoulder to see if there's anyone behind us.
"Uh, my place?" She suggests, placing her hand on my leg when I open my mouth to answer. "Yeah, drive to my place."
"Alri- oh, no," I groan as I feel her lips on my neck, and I blink a few times to stay focused on the road. She chose the perfect time to mess with me. "Come on, I'm trying to drive-"
"Mhm," She hums in response, pulling my head to hers to kiss me again. I feel like I should thank Harry for this, but I also feel like he wouldn't want to listen about his sister snogging a guy.
She pulls away after a few seconds, finally letting me drive properly, and I'm almost surprised that I haven't started weaving through traffic. "You almost got us killed," I breathe out, even though we're in no danger at all.
"Mhm."
"Just- stop it!" I say through a laugh after she attaches her lips to my neck again, and I place my right hand on her leg. Surprisingly, that gets her to stop, and she sits back in her seat, placing her hand over mine. A second later, she takes my hand with both of hers, entwining our fingers. I glance at our hands with a smile, and throw my head back against the headrest, sighing. For once, I feel like everything is the way it's supposed to be.
