Chapter 34 - Heartbeat

Actually, Yibo would have liked to take care of his parents' marriage problems, because he didn't believe that his dad really doesn't love his mom anymore. Because he just knows that his dad will always love his mom. That she will continue to be his dream wife. And that his mom wants nothing more than for his dad to come and ask her to return to him.

But Yibo wasn't fooling himself either. He couldn't even solve his own love problems and had so many appointments that he often barely got to sleep or eat. Most of the time he slept when he was taken from one appointment to the next. As for eating, he often ate nothing for a day or two, then a little, and then nothing again.

A few nights ago, when Yibo returned to the hotel from his many appointments, having eaten nothing and barely able to keep his eyes open from tiredness, his mom had been waiting for him. She had gotten him something to eat and after he had eaten and showered, she lay down in bed next to him, wrapped her arms around him and kissed his forehead.

"Is this how you imagined your fame? Is this what you always wanted?" She asked him softly.

"I knew it would be hard mom. But this level of hardness, I never assumed. I wanted to be a famous superstar and I made it. But I sacrificed a lot to get there. Too much, probably. Because some of what I had to leave behind, I'll never get back."

"Like Zhan?"

"How do you figure it now?"

"Well, it's obvious you're looking for him."

"Really?"

"Mn. It is to me. And I understand that, too. You loved him very much and you left without saying goodbye to him. You left him because your dreams and goals were more important to you than he was."

"That's not entirely true mom."

"Oh yes it is my darling. You always wanted to be famous and entertain everyone with your talents. And on top of that, you got scared. At 19 at the time, you weren't ready to commit so tightly. You had only been together for a short time and had a difficult road until then. And suddenly when you had him and we were talking about getting married, you panicked. You hadn't achieved what you wanted and you weren't ready for marriage. You were afraid you'd end up like me."

"Mom I..."

"I married your dad at the same age you were and gave up all the plans I had for him and my marriage to him. I never learned to stand on my own two feet and made myself dependent on your dad by marrying him. I know that you never wanted that kind of life. And that you were afraid you'd end up like me. Because you probably realized that you would give up everything for Zhan. Because then he would be all that mattered to you."

"Yes, at first I thought like that. I thought that's why I wanted to run away. But then I lay in my bed and thought about Zhan and his career. About what he always wanted to achieve. And then I thought that he would give up everything just for me. Just because of me, he came back to Keno Academy and put all his plans for me on hold. I didn't want that. How could I let him give up everything he worked so hard for all his life just for me?"

"Why didn't you tell him so and claim it was all about you?"

"Because it was about me, too. I thought about myself and I wanted to achieve my goals. I really wanted that. So it wasn't a lie. At the same time, I also cared about Zhan. I knew no matter what I would say to him, he would still follow me everywhere and give up everything for me. So I had to find a way for him to achieve his goals as well. And the only way to do that was to run away and not give him the chance to follow me."

"See? You'll never end up like me. Because even at 19, you were smarter than your dad and I were back then. I really hope you can find Zhan and explain everything to him."

"I hope so too mom. You know, whenever I think of him, I still get heavy heart beating. I missed him every day and still do. The first few weeks in Seoul, I almost went crazy without him. Every day I thought about getting on a plane and flying to see him. And then Youn and Wooseok came to Seoul to the academy. They helped me through this difficult time. But still, I missed Zhan like crazy and cried my eyes out at night. Especially because I learned that no one knew where Zhan was. Not even Uncle could find out with all his contacts. And still Zhan is missing. Which is what A-Kuan told me, which A-Kuan knows from Zhan's sister."

"Do you know that he has been calling me from time to time asking about you? He also sends me some money every month. Even though I never asked him for it. He said it was for my expensive physical therapy. I guess he found out somewhere that there wasn't enough money for it and I had to stop therapy."

"What?"

"Yeah, he must have called once a month for the first year after you left. Then he called every three months. The last time he called me was about two months ago. I thought you knew that? And I thought you told him about the physical therapy. I thought you asked him to and didn't want me to know. That's why I just said he probably found out on his own."

"I didn't know. What did he say? Did he say where he was and what he was doing? Do you know if he wants to see me again?"

"Mhhh, it always went the same pattern actually. He would call, ask how I was doing and the rest of your family. Asked me about physical therapy and progress. Then we'd talk about your progress in the show business and the news we heard about you and he'd say goodbye again."

"So you don't know where he is either...damn."

"I think when he's ready, he'll show himself to you. You hurt him a lot back then and it's been 5 years after all. Give him some time. If he still loves you, which I assume he does, he'll get back to you."

"Yes, if he still loves me."

"Why wouldn't he still love you? When you ran away that time, he said to me that you were going your way. I don't think he was even really mad at you. And someone like you, can't be forgotten at all. Once they love you, they always will. No matter what."

"I miss him so much mom. I finally want to see him again. I finally want to explain everything to him."

"I know. But for now, you should sleep and rest. Tomorrow, no today, is your big concert. And before that you still have the photo shoot and the press conference. So get some rest now."

"Mn. I'm totally exhausted too."

"Then sleep well now. I'll stay with you tonight and make sure you get a good night's sleep."

"Thanks mom." Said Yibo and fell asleep.

It wasn't until about 11 am that Yibo woke up again. He had been so exhausted that he had slept for almost 10 hours and would have preferred to sleep much longer. But the next appointments were already pending and he had hardly any time to eat and shower. So he hurried to not have to struggle through the day with an empty stomach again.

From the hotel it went directly to the photo shoot for a make-up brand product. Then they drove to Yibo's new apartment, which was finally finished renovated and furnished. After a tour of his new apartment, he informed his mother that she could now move in there and what the door code was. And already he had to move on again.

A press conference was planned. For that he had to go to another hotel, where his stylist gave him clothes to put on and his make up artist made him a light make up so his face wouldn't shine in the light of the cameras. Then he had to take a seat in the big conference room, where the journalists immediately took several pictures of him.

When the flurry of flashes finally stopped and Yibo could slowly see again, he looked around the room to see if he might see a familiar face. It was easier for him to speak when there were already people he knew. But at first, Yibo didn't recognize anyone from the press and media.

But then, as he turned his gaze to the open door, his heart suddenly began to race heavily. Even though the person standing there was not looking at him and he could not see the face properly, he knew it was Zhan! He immediately got up from his chair, which brought him questioning looks. His manager held him by the wrist. "Where are you going?" He asked Yibo in a whisper?

Yibo looked at his manager and replied, "I just need to check on something."

"Oh yeah, and what?"

"There..." He looked again at the open door, but there was no one there. He wanted to go see, but his manager wouldn't let go of him and pulled him back to his chair.

"Remember why we are here Yibo. Whatever you want to check, you can do later. Right now, concentrate on the press conference here."

"Yes, sir." Replied Yibo. He dutifully answered all the questions, which of course had been cleared with his management beforehand, and then had to stay for a few good pictures. Then finally he was allowed to leave.

He hurried into the hallway and looked around on both sides. But the person he was sure was Zhan was nowhere to be seen. And instead of searching the whole hotel for Zhan, Yibo had to listen to a scolding about his behavior at the beginning of the press conference, from his manager. Which visibly annoyed Yibo.

"Well, if I had a manager who dared to speak to me like that, I would fire him and find a new one." Yibo heard a familiar voice say behind him.

Yibo spun around and Emily beamed happily at him. "Emily...wow...how are you?" He asked after she immediately hugged him in greeting.

"I'm doing great. And how are you, I don't have to ask, do I?" She indicated the manager, who was already back on his cell phone.

"No, I'm fine. He was right, after all. I shouldn't have just gotten up earlier."

"Maybe. But Yibo? I saw him too!"

"What?"

"Yes. I saw Zhan. I saw him earlier. He was even in the room taking pictures of you."

"Really?"

"Mn."

"Then I wasn't mistaken. But tell me, why are you here?"

"I don't know if anyone has told you yet. But your question probably indicates no. So I'll tell you. I'm a reporter now, and I was actually only here because I was supposed to interview someone. But he didn't show up at the appointed time. I was about to leave again, but my boss called me and said, then I should attend your press conference. My colleague was still stuck in traffic, so it was just as well that my appointment was cancelled."

"Mhhh, you're a reporter? But you wanted to get on stage and in front of the cameras."

"I wanted to. But life had other plans for me. After you all left, He Peng and I became friends. We became a couple and got married at the start of our third year at Keno Academy. After we graduated, my husband and I were in front of the camera. But then I got pregnant unplanned. And with a baby and a husband who is always away, it's not easy being a mother, actress and dancer. Luckily, I listened to the director and had a plan B. I'm now a reporter and interviewer. I am working now as a reporter and interviewing athletes. My salary is good. I have good working hours and enough time for my daughter."

"So everything still worked out for you."

"Yes it has. I just wish my husband could be home more often. And as soon as my daughter is old enough, I want to give my career in show business another try."

"What's old enough for you?"

"When she goes to school."

"That's not going to be easy."

"I know. In case of need, I still have my job."

"That's good."

"Mn. It's really nice to see you again Yibo. But unfortunately, I have to go to my newsroom now and write an article about you."

"I have to go on as well. I have to go to rehearsals for my concert tonight."

"I heard about that. You've really made it far. It's just too bad it didn't last with you and Zhan."

"That's another story. Maybe we'll meet again sometime and I'll tell it to you. But only if it doesn't get published!"

"Don't worry. You know me."

"Yes, but now you're a reporter."

"But I still don't tell on friends."

"Good to know."

"Okay, I'll be on my way now. Oh yeah, if you see Zhan again, give him my regards."

"Will do. See you then." Said Yibo with a smile. He watched Emily hurry away. Then Yibo had to go on his way again as well. And as he left the hotel, he looked around very carefully. But he did not see Zhan again.
