2. A Word of Warning

" Class is dismissed. Make sure you study for the test next week and hand me your research papers by the end of this week, " your professor declared before letting the class go. You took a moment to catch up with your friends, but your mind was so focused on what you had researched on last night.

' Are you okay, (y/n)? What's on your mind? You haven't talked much today, ' your friend asked, resting a hand on your shoulder. Snapping out of your thoughts, you looked towards those kind eyes for a moment, your own eyes softening once you saw how worried she was for you. Have you really not talked much today? You could have sworn you did.

Perhaps you had a lot on your mind lately.

Your hand reached out to hold hers, rubbing the back of it gently. This only brought a worried smile on her face before you decided to respond. " I'm doing alright, bestie. Thank you for checking in on me. " Her brows only furrowed at that.

' (Y/n), you didn't answer my question. What's on your mind? '

It wasn't like you were trying to avoid her question. It was more . . a way for you to avoid explaining everything that you learned about last night. It was going to take a long time, and you needed to get back home so you could c—

' (Y/n). '

That was certainly too stern for you to ignore now. You hesitated before letting out a deep sigh.

" I know you're worried, but I just have a lot on my mind right now. Can I tell you later when I'm free tonight? " you reasoned with her. You prayed silently that she could just leave you alone for the day. It made you feel bad for doing this to her, but something in that abandoned building seemed to be calling out to you, as if you were destined to be a night guard there. Perhaps it was your destiny to explore the building and finally solve the mystery of Freddy's Fazbear Pizza.

' Or maybe you're just crazy and have no sense of control when it comes to knowing everything, ' a voice in your head retorted back to you.
Yeah. That was probably it.

Though she looked quite worried, she hesitated in her reply. ' Fine . . Just promise me that you will call, yeah? ' You nodded with a faint smile.

" Yup. Will do. "

And with that, you raced back home, finally focusing on your new task at hand : getting that job interview.

-

" . . Yes! Thank you! . . It's okay if it's last minute. I'll come to the interview tonight! " you exclaimed before finally saying your formal goodbyes and hanging up the phone. This was it. You did it. You had to admit : going to such lengths to unearth the horrors of the past was a crazy idea, even for you, but unsolved mysteries were always a weakness of yours. Those mysteries gave you something to do, a way to relieve your boredom. After all, life isn't worth living if you don't take a few risks here and there. Live a little, as you were often told by your friends.

The interview was only a few hours away, so you needed something to do to calm your nerves for the time being. Maybe your apartment could use another round of cleaning? Or maybe you could play on your switch? Thoughts ran rapidly through your head until you decided to just take a short nap. Laying down on the couch, you closed your eyes and drifted off to sleep.

When your eyes snapped open, you could hear the sound of children laughing. Looking around, you noted that the party hats and balloons suggested it was some kind of birthday party. The thought of children being happy brought a smile on your face. You decided to walk around, interacting with the kids as they showed you their masks of the animatronic characters. This all seemed so interesting when you suddenly saw a group of five kids follow a man dressed in purple away from the rest of the children. Curious, you followed the group from a distance, an uneasy feeling bubbling deep inside you. Something was wrong.

' Now children, this way. Don't you want your surprise? ' asked the man. Oh, you absolutely hated the way he said such words and that unsettling grin on his face. Deciding to interfere, you stepped forward and called out to the kids.

" Hey, where are you taking these kids? The party is this way! Come on, kiddos, let's get you back to the party, " you said with much ease and confidence. You could have sworn that anger flashed across his face before his attention was directed towards the now rejoicing kids who ran to hug you. Accepting the hug, you held their hands and guided them back to the party, only for the entire room to be empty and dim. Feeling a sudden emptiness, you turned back to warn the kids, only for them to disappear from your side entirely.

" Huh . . ? Where could they b — "
' ' You are a kind soul. ' '

" Agh ! " you exclaimed, whipping your head around to see a lanky puppet figure with five small ghosts beside it. Are those ghosts who you think they were . . ? The puppet tilted its head eerily to the side to get your attention and you immediately snapped back to look at it.

' ' Thank you for saving these children from that creature, but it's too late. ' '
' We're already dead, ' said one of them blankly.
' But you could have saved us. '
' But you must save yourself now. '

The kids started to chant something, but your mind went hazy as you tried to process what was going on. Who were these kids and why did they seem so familiar? Your brain searched for answers, trying to find information that involved five dead kids. After a moment of thought, your brain finally found out who they were and you wanted to vomit right then and there. Those were the kids that died from Freddy's Fazbear Pizza. By process of elimination, that guy that you saved them from was probably their murderer, whisking them off to a private area to slaughter them like a mad man. You felt sick. Your vision started to spin, moving in and out of consciousness as the puppet and the kids' chanting grew louder. Barely, you could discern what they were telling you. A sign. A warning.

' Save yourself . . Save yourself . . Stay away . . Stay away . . '

All you could do at that moment was scream at the top of your lungs.

" FUCK! " you screamed out, falling out of the couch with a loud thud. You scrambled to sit up and look frantically at your surroundings, only to sigh in relief as you realized where you were. You rubbed your forehead, trying to remember the details of the crazy dream.

' It felt so real, like I was right there with them, ' you thought to yourself.

With a sigh, you got up and checked the time, seeing as it was only 6 o'clock in the evening. You knew your interview was at 8 tonight, but you couldn't help but think back on what those kids warned you about. What could they possibly mean? Was it a warning to stay away from the building entirely? Now that you thought about it, it made sense. The place was probably haunted and who knows what sorts of horrific sights you might see in there? While you were someone who loved horror attractions and murder mysteries, were you going to get involved in a situation you shouldn't mess with in the first place? Then, a thought popped up in your mind that sent shivers down your spine :

Maybe there was a reason why nobody ever solved this case.

You were torn now. Should you cancel your interview? You could get away with the excuse that it was too much to prepare for an interview at such a short notice. That could work, right? After all, you were still so young. With how desperate those children were warning you, something in your gut told you that getting this job could possibly put you in danger. But, your heart still longed to find answers as to where those kids could be. Remembering your dream and the suffering look on their faces, you also wanted to help them. Shouldn't you put their souls to rest if you could at least figure out who the killer was? He might still be out there, completely relaxed at the fact that he got away with all those murders from so many years ago. You needed those answers. You needed to do it. For them.

Never so sure in your life as you were now, you held yourself with resolve as you got yourself ready for the interview. You have to solve the case. For their sake.

-

Driving into the parking lot, you turned off your engine and looked at yourself in the mirror. You could do this. You know how to charm your way into getting what you want. You keep telling yourself that the nerves you're feeling right now must be because of the interview, but deep down, you knew you were still scared. Maybe you should have listened to the children. You still can now. You could drive away from this place and never return, but your conscience knew that it was only right to do these kids a favor and rescue them from the suffering they must be experiencing. Taking a deep breath, you opened your car door and locked it, confidently walking up to the entrance of the dilapidated building.

Upon your first step into the dusty lobby, you already regretted your decision.

' Are you (y/n) (l/n)? ' A kind voice asked in the darkness. You squinted and rested your hand on your forehead, looking to see the person who said that. Said person emerged from the shadows with a lopsided grin and waved at you in a friendly manner. You waved back in a daze and nodded to his question, clearing your throat.

" Yes. That's me, " you responded back with equal eagerness. He smiled at your enthusiasm and led you to what seemed to be his office. As he gestured to the chair across from his much larger one, you immediately followed his instruction and sat down stiffly in front of him. He noticed your discomfort and chuckled a bit.

' You don't have to be so formal with me. Don't worry! It'll be a chill interview and I'll make it quick, yeah? ' You didn't heave the heart to complain, so you nodded. He hummed approvingly and set a manila folder in front of you. ' Now, (y/n) tell me a bit about yourself and why you wish to work for me as a night guard. '

Nodding, you explained to the best of your ability everything about yourself that you had written in your script earlier. You made yourself as interesting as possible before exclaiming how interested you are in the legend of Fazbear Entertainment and your love for horror attractions. A lot of it seemed to be bullshit to you, but the man was eating it all up. After you finished your last sentence, he clasped his hands together and immediately spoke. ' You're hired. '

Pause. He said what? Just like that?
That didn't seem right.

You blinked at him for a bit, questioning his behavior. Why was he so eager to hire? That warning was suddenly at the forefront of your thoughts, as if there were alarms going off in your head telling you to not accept his offer of employment. But you were always the stubborn one. After a moment of coming back to reality, you smiled.

" Thank you so much sir. I really a — "

' Now, just sign here and you'll be set! ' He interrupted quickly before handing you the contract. Another red flag. Reading through the contract, your eyes widened at one particular sentence that set off all alarms in your head again.

" Uh . . Why does this say all employees cannot quit the job unless for a legitimate reason, and the company is not responsible for any injuries or deaths that occur? " His eyes widened in panic before settling into a relaxed emotion. ' Some guards in the past have had injuries because they tripped over loose boards and stuff. It's not our fault that they're clumsy, right? ' he joked, laughing a bit too forcefully. That was also not a good sign. Looking down at the contract, you knew this was a decision you would regret, but you couldn't think like that now. You needed to save those poor children and put them to rest and this was the only way you could access this building for your investigations.

With a final, tired sigh, you signed your name on the contract, handing it back to him. Your eyes locked with his and suddenly you felt like you signed a deal with the devil himself.

' Your shift starts tomorrow night at 12am until 6am. Good luck, (y/n)! '

Good luck? What the hell does that mean?

Shakily, you stood up from the chair and shook his hand before he guided you towards the front entrance again. You were just in time to see the sun set and disappear into the green hills that seemed so far away from here. If only you could run away from here, but your sacrifice in safety would be worth it all, just to see those kids happy again.

With a final wave goodbye, you walked back to your car. 12am tomorrow. God, what a mess you've gotten yourself into.
