There is Always A Man Before The Fall

The summer before my sophomore year I spent as much time as I could with my mom, Jenny Black. With it just being the two of us my whole life, at some point, my mom became more like my best friend instead of my mom.

After she realized there was nothing to worry about with me going off and becoming a rebellious teenager, she became a very chilled parent.

My mom was only eighteen when I was born. Still in her senior year of high school. My father left our small town of Deep Valley Virginia a few months later after graduation and neither of us heard from him since.

My mom always worked a minimum wage job to keep a roof over our heads and to make sure I always had what I needed.

Mom was amazed by my new look and confidence. One night after we had been up talking for hours she admitted the city was good for me. Something she had a hard time admitting. I think she was hoping I'd hate it and want to come back instead of leaving for my second year. She missed me being home when she got in and was lonely.

I set my mom up on a dating website without her knowing. At 36 she was still a knockout. She was on the short side at 5'4. She had mid-length wavy brown hair with bright blue eyes. She had an hourglass figure that looked like something from the Marilyn Monroe era. Which is why it didn't surprise me at all when she had tons of messages in two days.

I went through them all and narrowed it down to two different men. I set up a date with both of them the following week for her. That way she wouldn't be upset when I went back to New York at the end of the week.

That Saturday after everything was loaded up in my car, I showed my mom the site and her two dates for the following week. While she was looking through everything trying to figure out how to kill me without getting caught, I kissed her goodbye and snuck out the front door.

It was a week before classes started back for the fall semester. I had my schedule and dorm assignment already. I was assigned the same dorm as the year before, I'd just be getting a new roommate.

When I arrived back on campus, there weren't many people moving in and my roommate was one of them.

I set my room up on the same side as the year before. The decorations were the same as last year the only new thing was a collage of pictures I'd made over the summer of all the memories I'd made from the year before.

I called Joss that night and we meet at our favorite bar. All my friends came for our welcome back to the city party.

The next day, my roommate for the year showed up around noon. Mandy Jane was a sophomore and was studying Pre-Med just like me.

5'2 with long, red hair full of wild curls and green eyes. She reminded me of Merida the Disney Princess. She was dressed in a button up three quarter sleeve shirt and a blue jean skirt with Keds. She looked just like me before Joss took me under her wing.

Mandy's hair may have been wild, but she was one of the most organized people I'd ever met. Her side of the dorm was always very tidy with everything in its place.

She set up study schedules for us and always helped me whenever I asked. She was the nicest person I'd met. We didn't have a class together that first semester, but she told me what to watch out for with the different professors.

I took Mandy to meet Joss and our friends. We all hung out several different weekends. Going to bars and different parties. I asked Joss to take Mandy under her wing and help her as she did me.

After the fourth time Mandy hung out with us at our friend James party, Joss told me she didn't want me to bring Mandy back. When I asked her why she told me she didn't like her and had a bad feeling about her.

Joss had to be wrong about Mandy. She just hadn't spent the same amount of time with her that I had. So instead, I tried to help her like Joss did for me.

We went shopping and started hanging out more. I would blow off plans with Joss for Mandy and not tell her because I knew how she felt and didn't want to hear a lecture.

When spring semester rolled around, Mandy and I signed up for the same Economics class. It was the only class we both needed to finish our prerequisites we hadn't taken, and we were stoked to take it together. We planned to meet each other there and get a seat together.

I was the first one there. Since Mandy had a class before this one, she would be here soon. I was getting my notebook from my bag when someone sat in the seat beside me. I thought it was Mandy so I turned to tell her hey, but the smile fell from my face when I realized it was a guy sitting there instead of her.

He looked like a model straight from the cover of GQ. Sandy blond surfer style hair with brown eyes. Broad shoulders and a tight t-shirt showing off his washboard abs. You could tell he was tall even though he was sitting down at the moment.

I didn't know how long I was staring at the Greek god beside me. He broke me out of my daydream when he started to chuckle and held out his hand. "I'm Trevor Davis."

I snapped my mouth shut and licked the side of my mouth making sure there wasn't any drool.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Abbie Black." I put my hand in his and tried to stop the shiver from going through my body when his skin touched mine.

"I'm glad this seat was still open. I'll have something beautiful to stare at while I pretend to pay attention to this class." Trevor gave me a wink as he finally let my hand go.

Mandy came into the class then and started looking around for me. When her eyes landed on me and the two people on either side of me she gave me an annoyed look.

I shrugged my shoulders at her in reply and pointed to the seat on the other side of Trevor that was still available. When Mandy sat down I introduced them to each other before the professor started his lecture.

By the end of the class, Trevor had both of our numbers and a study date for the three of us that weekend. After that, we started meeting up twice a week. The three of us always getting along with each other, never arguing.

During spring break, Trevor started texting me asking me out on a date. He had been flirting with me since that first class but hadn't asked me out until now. I told him no because I didn't want to mess up our study group if things didn't work out between us. Trevor didn't give up though. No matter how many times I shot him down.

The week after spring break, our Economics professor gave us a group project to complete. It would be half of our final grade along with the term paper due the last week of class. Trevor and I were paired together. After spending every night together for a week, I agreed to let him take me out that Saturday.

I didn't tell Mandy. She was jealous Trevor and I got paired together for the project already. I wasn't sure how she would feel if I told her about his text and all the times he'd asked me on a date.

That Saturday, Trevor showed me a part of New York I hadn't seen before. He took me to a small mom and pop Italian restaurant in Little Italy. The restaurant was small and cozy with a romantic vibe with the low lighting and the candlelit tables.

Trevor kept me talking the entire time, asking me questions about myself. By the time we finished and went to a nearby park, I'd told him my entire life story.

Though he hadn't told me much of anything about his. When he dropped me off at the entrance to my dorm, he kissed me goodnight and promised to take me out again that Tuesday.

After that every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday I'd make up some excuse to Mandy and sneak off to go on a date with Trevor. Each date better than the last.

I still kept it from Mandy that Trevor and I were dating. Both of us choosing to keep it quiet when we met up on Monday and Friday for our study group.

The project that brought us together gave us both an A three weeks after we started dating so I decided to surprise Trevor that night after our date. After going to an Off-Broadway play and another amazing restaurant, I gave Trevor the honor of being the second person I slept with.

I went to sleep that night cradled in his arms thinking I could seriously fall for this guy. The next few weeks were something from a dream. My life seeming like it couldn't get any better.

Trevor, Mandy and I decided to skip our final week of the study group to work on our papers for our Economics class separately. Knowing how busy I was now with always being around Trevor, I'd finished mine a week before it was due.

I used my free time to study in the library while Mandy took over our dorm as her study central. When I finished my exams and handed in my papers, I moved back into the dorm for the last week of classes before leaving for the summer break.

Mandy and I went out that night to celebrate finally being finished with our sophomore year.

When I walked into my Economics class that Monday, Trevor nor Mandy had made it yet. After I took my seat waiting for class to start, Professor Moore came in early and asked to see me immediately.

I grabbed my things and hurried after him not having a clue with this could be about. I followed him down the hall to a conference room that already had a few people inside.

Mandy and Trevor were at one end of the long table with an older man that looked like Trevor standing behind him in a suit. The man I'd only seen in photos, the Dean, was in the center of the table facing the door with two other people on each side of him.

Professor Moore took the seat beside the woman on the Dean's right and motioned for me to take the seat in front of him.

As soon as the door shut behind me, a feeling of dread overtook me. I gave Trevor and Mandy a questioning look as I sat down, but neither of them even looked in my direction.

The Dean started to speak to bring my attention to him. "Ms. Black, thank you for joining us."

I didn't trust myself to speak so I just nodded my head.

"It's come to our attention that Mr. Trevor Davis and yourself turned in the same final paper to Professor Moore for your final Economics paper. Do you know anything about this Ms. Black?"

My dread and confusion increased. "No, sir. I turned in my own paper. I haven't seen the paper Trevor turned in."

Professor Moore slid two papers across the table toward me. One was mine, the same sleeve I'd turned mine in with. The other had Trevor's name on it but was the same word for word as mine. I could feel my eyes about to pop out of my head in disbelief.

"Can you confirm that's the paper you turned in Ms. Black?" The Dean asked.

"Yes, sir." I whispered, feeling so small in that moment.

"You heard it yourself, Dean Harlow, she did it. Now, can I take my son home for the remainder of the break, or do I need to get my lawyers involved?" The man I assumed was Trevor's dad asked, while he and the slimy bastard stood. Getting ready to leave no matter what the Dean said.

"Of course, Devon. I'll call you when I'm finished to tell you the results from the rest of the meeting." The Dean came around the table to shake both Davis' men's hands.

They left quickly after and the Dean came back to his seat before finishing what this was about.

"Ms. Black, when Professor Moore brought this to our attention, he interviewed Mr. Davis first, since he turned in his paper first. He signed an affidavit stating he was the original author of the paper and had no idea how you could even get a copy. We asked your roommate, Ms. Jane, to come in and she told us your plan. She was to distract Mr. Davis on the night of your last study group while you got the paper from his laptop. What do you have to say?"

The memory of the last Friday we meet up together was in my mind and it was playing over and over again. The only person who was left at the table alone with our stuff was Mandy while I went to the restroom. Trevor cornered me when I walked out the door, moving me to the end of the hallway so we could make out and not get caught by Mandy.

"That's not how that went at all. She..." I pointed at Mandy, getting ready to blow my top but she interrupted.

"Abbie, please! No more. I know you've been jealous that Trevor and I have been dating since the start of the semester, but this has gone too far. Trying to get him kicked out of school for not choosing you is a little much don't ya think?" Mandy asked with triumph shining in her eyes.

I sat back in my chair trying to keep the tears from falling down my face. The girl at the other end of the table wasn't the person who had become one of my closest friends over the year. She was a woman out for revenge, and it was close enough that she could taste it.

"We have Ms. Jane's statement as well. It coincides with Mr. Davis's story. Ms. Black, we need to get to the bottom of this. Thank you, Ms. Jane, you can go now." The Dean excused Mandy and she skipped out of the room.

"Now, Ms. Black, we'd like to hear your side of the story." Professor Moore said.

So I told them, everything, but whoever said, "The truth shall set you free," didn't know what the fuck they were talking about!
