Twenty Three
In the morning, you wake with a start. The cabin is empty, though. No sign of anyone else on their way in to knife you, or otherwise cause you harm. You dress and pack your stuff, seeing as tomorrow is your last day in the cabin. After breakfast, you consider everything you've been through in the past few days.
It's been a lot of eye-crossing research, and way more excitement than you think is probably normal for the mountains. A lot of it was pretty, though, and definitely refreshingly different from the constant concrete jungle in the city. The people are even nicer, minus one murderous dude. You look at the notebook, filled with your scribbles about a long dead woman and her possible brother who is haunting your cabin.
You've come this far. Plus, you sort of promised Luke that you'd find his sister for him.
But after last night... who knows what other dangers are lurking around the corners in this strange and wild land?
Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to head home a day early. You doubt anyone would blame you, after what happened last night. It was sort of cool, but it also made your heart race like crazy, which can't be too good for your health. And what if you hadn't stood your ground? What if you'd gone off on some random chase through the woods? What if you hadn't hit him as accurately as you had?
What if he'd succeeded?
Ice cold creeps down your back, and you shiver at the very thought. Do you really owe Luke anything?
You take a deep breath.
