Nine

It's a lucky thing that you stopped for groceries on the way to the cabin. With a full pantry and free internet, it's shaping up to be a very relaxing day indeed. As you come down the stairs, you eye the fireplace and decide that this chilly cabin could use a nice, warm fire. It takes you a few minutes to get a proper fire going, but soon you have a fledgling fire slowly blossoming. You close the screen door, but leave the glass door open for now so you can get the most heat from the fire.

The smell of wood smoke fills the air as you head to the oven and scramble some eggs for breakfast, and toast two thick slices of bread to go with it. After the coffee is poured, you take your food and eat it beside the fire, enjoying the crackling of the flames and the delicious food that warms your entire body. The leather couch lets you really sink into the comfort of the cushions, and you half-doze in pure relaxation. When was the last time you woke up without an alarm, and with nowhere to be?

You glance over to the fire, and the glass screen catches your attention. There, on the outside of it, is a handprint that was not there before.

You jump in surprise, and adrenaline rushes through you again. The print slowly fades from the screen, and soon there is nothing left to see. Just your fire and the fear pumping through you. Your brain goes into overdrive, trying to rationalize it. A print from a previous renter? The hand was large, maybe a man's? Someone just had some greasy hands, that's all.

Then why did the print fade?

You shake your head, and chide yourself for being silly. There's nothing there now. Slowly, you sit back on the couch and settle back in. For the next several hours, you eye the fireplace intermittently, but nothing else weird happens. After a nice dinner, you head back upstairs to shower. When you get up to the top step, you notice that you're not alone in the room.

There is a person standing in front of the mirror, their back to you. From behind, all you can see is that they have long, dark hair that falls to their lower back, and dark pants. They turn slowly, and reveal a muscular upper body, definitely male. And pale eyes that look white.

You look around for a weapon, but find that the only thing you have is the book in your hands.
