Clichés
There's some sort of collective knowledge that some story clichés are unforgivable.
Such as car crashes and amnesia.
My opinion is that if you want it in your story, you can goddamn put it in your story. Ignore people trying to control your story topics and ideas. You're the author, you're the boss.
First off, car crashes are really fucking common. I've been on plenty of {long distance} road trips, and in every one of them I've seen at least 4 crashes. So, it's not illogical that characters can get in a car crash.
Amnesia. While it's not something I see everday, it's still a very real possibility. If you want to have a character get amnesia, go do it. No one can stop you. You're the author, you have all the power.
Hell, as for the people who try and say that amnesia is overrated and shouldn't be used: the author could have killed the character. Amnesia is a way to add pain and sadness to the story without ending the characters life. Appreciate that.
So whatever cliché you want to use, go ahead and fucking use it. If a cliché is considered overused, then obviously people read it, because it's used successfully to the point where it's gotten popular and widespread.
