Chapter 4
It was dead silent all throughout the house. The door creaked open, and two figures made their way through the door.
Sasori paused before coming in. He quickly scanned the room ahead of him, and stopped at the couch.
Itachi was sleeping like a prince, upright. Next to him was Kisame, who was snoring face down on a pillow, with a bloody wipe in his hand. Obito's head was hanging as he was sitting up, with his arms folded. And then..
He eyed something small on the carpet, and slowly crept over to it. Deidara followed slowly. He crouched down cautiously next to it, and jolted when it moved.
Deidara snickered at him, to which he returned with a glare. He made out a chest shape of a little girl, moving up and down. He moved his hand towards her, and jumped back immediately.
The little girl shakily stood up, and moaned a little. She rubbed at her eyes. Her head hung slightly, and her eyelids fluttered. Sasori moved over to her, and flicked her upper right cheek.
She hadn't flinched in the least when he did so. "She's in a deep sleep," Sasori confirmed, "she's probably dreaming." Deidara responded with a grunt.
-
Kyo woke up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water. She walked down the hallway, and it seemed to stretch on forever. On and on she walked, yet she didn't seem to be getting any closer to the kitchen.
On the way over, she passed a window in the hallway. The moon's light seeped into the dark environment, catching her attention. She walked over to it, and peered out the glass.
From the hallway window, she noticed several figures standing outside of the house, staring at her.
-
Sasori and Deidara followed the little girl all the way over to the hallway, with full curiosity. She stumbled over to the window, and stared out of it. They traced her line of sight, to an empty field of grass that blew with the wind.
"Nngh, stop it, stop. Don't.. keep.. no. S..top it. Go.. away.. you're scaring me.. stop it!" A look of pure terror crossed her face, and they continued to watch with full interest.
-
The figures wore black and white, and their skin was pale as a white sheet. The grass seemed to blow with a ghostly aura to it. They moved slowly towards her, moaning strange and scary-sounding things. The wind howled, causing her to shake in fear.
"Stop looking at me like that!" She yelled, but they didn't listen. They looked like a cross between the dead and the living, and the way they looked at her was terrifying.
They wanted her dead, and she was frozen in fear, she couldn't move. The whole house turned gray, and dark colors enveloped her field of sight. A chill she had never felt before entered her, and she screamed in terror.
-
They both grew alarmed when the little girl began to scream and cry, still rooted to the spot, eyes wide. Immediately, Itachi ran in.
He bent down to look straight into her cloudy eyes, filled with horror. He clutched the sides of her shoulders, and shook her gently.
"Kyo, wake up! Wake up, Kyo!"
Still crying, she moaned in responce. Itachi took hold of her hand tenderly, and walked her outside. He took her to the place where she was staring at.
He stretched out her hand to feel the grass, and used his chakra to make green and blue hues to light up the area around them. Soon she woke up, and looked around her. "W-what?" She asked in confusion.
Itachi squeezed her hand in comfort. "It's okay." He whispered. Almost as if she hadn't heard him, Kyo looked around. She started mumbling things that he didn't understand. 'She's awake, but it's like she doesn't know it,' he thought.
Kyo sniffed a few times, rubbed her nose, and bent down. She felt the ground as if she was blind, and laid down, beginning to go to sleep again.
Itachi scooped her up in his arms, and carried her in with slight worriment. He was met at the front door by a confused Sasori and Deidara. "Who is this? Hm." He asked, pointing at the girl in question.
"Her name is Kyo, and she is staying with us." Itachi replied. He trudged up the stairs. Deidara stopped at the foot of the stairway.
"Y'know.. that's not what an explanation sounds like. Hm." He called after him.
"Do you know what whispering even is?" Sasori spoke, irritated. As Deidara opened his mouth to respond with a witty remark, Itachi came back.
"Explanation. Now." Sasori pointed upwards, in the direction of where Itachi had taken Kyo.
"The short version or the long version?" Before Deidara could even speak, Sasori quickly interrupted,
"The short version."
Itachi, tiredly blinked a few times, before starting. "Obito took a liking to Kyo, and look her hom with him. We don't know much about her, except for the fact that she's a homeless orphan, and her mother left her and never came back. She seems to have wolf instincts, and can run up to speeds of thirty miles per hour."
His eyes trailed upwards, to where he had put Kyo into his room, and snugly into his bed. "I'm going back to sleep, so goodnight." He walked past them, onto the couch in the living room, where he returned to his slumber.
"How.. strange. Hm" was all Deidara could say about the matter. Sasori stayed silent. It wasn't something small, this was huge. One more person was going to live with them. Not only that, but it was a small innocent little girl.
A girl like Kyo didn't belong in the Akatsuki. She would die, he was sure of it.
-
The next morning, everyone had woken up, and Itachi had told Obito and Kisame everything that had happened. By then Kyo was still asleep.
"It would be wise to either kill the girl, or send her away," Sasori turned his head toward Obito, "she seems to be having too many problems that could interfere with the actions of the Akatsuki."
Obito was quick to shake his head. "No, I can't do that. I don't know what it is, but something about her.. fascinates me."
"Anyways," Itachi started again, "I am convinced that Kyo has Night Terrors." Deidara gave him a confused look.
"Night terrors?"
"Yes, night terrors. Night terrors in children are very different from the much more common nightmares. The symptoms are frequent, and recurring episodes of intense crying and fear during sleep, with difficulty in arousing the child. Night terrors typically occur in children her age, though it's actually very uncommon.
"Unlike nightmares, most children don't remember the dream they had. The problem is that they can't tell that you're there, even if you're comforting them. They will sit up in their bed and scream, and it is very hard to make them stop."
"Ugh." Kisame slapped a hand over his face. "I mean, I feel bad for Kyo, but this sounds like a huge hassle." Obito ignored the comment, which he interpreted to sound insensitive, and instead asked something different.
"How do you know so much about it?"
"Hm, it's not that Sasuke had them, but I have heard of them frequently. I worried that Sasuke could get them, so I prepared myself for what to do if he did."
Kyo made her way down the stairs, into the kitchen. "'Ey, Kyo, whatcha' doin'?" Kisame called out to her. "Oh, hey Kisame-san." She replied tiredly, as if she had just noticed him.
"Hey, get over here, y' little sleepyhead." He said. She made her way over to them, before stopping, and blinking a few times. She turned around, and marched straight back into the kitchen.
"She seems to have a short attention span right now." Sasori noted. Deidara shrugged.
"Hopefully she'll only be like this today."
