Chapter 11
Obito looked up at her, and his eyes softened. He looked into her eyes. "I'm sorry. I really am. I truly care about you, and you in turn brighten my day. I love you, even if you hate me."
She turned her gaze away from him. "It's not fair."
He knew exactly what she was talking about. It wasn't fair that she was the one to be attacked by wolves, to be abandoned.
All he could say was, "I know-...I know."
He stretched out his arms, bent down, and scooped the little girl up into his arms. She kicked and punched at him. "Lemme go! Wha' are you doin'? Where are we goin'?!"
He looked gently at her, even after a punch in the face. "Wherever you want to go. Tell me, and I'll take you there. If you want something, I'll get it for you. I'll do anything for you. Tonight is the night I have time off of work, and I want to spend it with you, Kyo."
Kyo stopped her kicking and punching, and looked up at him. "Anything?"
"Anything."
She thought about it, and then a smile that she fought to hide, but failed, crept onto her face.
"I wanna go.." She smiled wider, changing her mind. "It's a surprise."
"What?" Obito didn't know what she could possibly be talking about. "You can't keep the location a secret from me, I'm the one taking you to the destination."
Her sweet innocent green eyes stared up at him again. "Then you'll hafta trust me when I tell you which way to walk."
"Hm," was his reply.
They walked outside, to meet a cool breeze. Obito hugged Kyo tighter in his arms as she stuck her neck out to the side, making sure he was going the right way.
"Left!" "Left!" "Oh, I meant right." "Left!" "It's right over there!"
He stopped right outside of the forest to look up at a round, grassy hill. The moon and stars reflected off of the grass, giving it a blue light that looked beautiful.
He walked up it, and sat down at the very top. He laid Kyo down beside him. "Here?" He asked softly.
"Yeah, isn't it pretty?"
"Yeah."
"Ano.." Kyo looked down at her bandages. "Could I take 'em off? Jus' for right now?"
Obito nodded, and unwrapped her bandages. He threw them far away, down the hill, unseen. "There." He said, and put his hands behind his head.
Kyo scowled. "That's littering!" She said. Obito looked back at her with an amused smile.
"Not if we get it later."
"Yeah, but.. but.. that's still littering!"
He let out an exaggerated sigh, telling her to let it go.
He stared up at the sky. "To what degree is it a choice to be made?" He wondered aloud. Kyo turned her head to look at him in confusion.
"Whata you talkin' 'bout?"
"I mean, it's not our fault if we are born into this world. We are made, even if we didn't want to exist."
"I think you should be happy that you exist!" Kyo softly replied, even though he didn't expect an answer. "You are you, no matter how many times you try not to be. If you didn't exist, then what would I do? What would everyone else do? I would be sad and lonely if you didn't exist. Even if you didn't want to be born into this world, you should still enjoy what you think you could miss. To exist, huh? What does that mean? To exist? I wasn't born perfect or really gifted. I'm not sure whether or not I will enjoy this life. At least not until the moment before I die, when I reflect on my life. But I'm pretty sure that I will say that this life was good, and I think you will, too."
Obito turned to her. "I've never heard anything so beautiful come out of the mouth of a five year old, or anyone." He turned back to the sky. "They're so pretty.." he mumbled.
"Aren't they?" Kyo asked. She laid back down, and stared up at them. She covered her left eye. "If I cover this eye, I can see the stars!" She covered the other eye. "If I cover this eye, I can see you, the moon and the stars again!"
She uncovered her eye, and looked straight up. "It takes both eyes to see the whole, beautiful night sky!"
Obito turned his head to look at her. Kyo really does say the most inspiring things, even if she doesn't mean it.
Kyo caught his eye, and turned to look at him. She let out a loud giggle, and turned back. She suddenly sat up onto her knees, and pointed upwards. "Look, Obito-san, a shooting star!"
He sat up as well, but instead, studied Kyo. She was so excited! He liked seeing her happy, seeing as she has been really sad lately.
Kyo's hand fell to her side, and she crossed her arms. She looked at Obito, furrowing her eyebrows and puffing out her cheeks. "Obito-saaan, you missed it!" She whined.
Obito chuckled. Kyo couldn't hold a straight face anymore and burst out into a fit of laughter. They both laughed, the joyful sound filling the silence of the night.
Kyo grinned at him, and looked up into the sky again.
He blinked. He blinked again.
Kyo's hair and eye color were back to normal. Her tied back hair turned red again, and her eyes swirled together with a mix of color until they were finally bright blue, like before.
Her hair wasn't purple anymore, and her eyes were no longer green. She was happy again. Free of her mental illness.
As if it had just realized that it was nighttime, her hair slowly turned dark blue. He couldn't help himself. He reached out and stroked her hair. She stopped everything she was doing, and closed her eyes, smiling slightly.
She was enjoying every second of this new affection that she had never felt before. It calmed her, and she just relaxed. He unconsciously continued to stroke her hair gently as he looked deeply at her calmed expression.
This was a night that they both would remember.
Always.
