First Up...@FromtheBar
FromtheBar (aka Rachel Cohen) is a lawyer by day, writer by night, and who knows what else at night. She spins stories across several genres, including sci-fi, erotica, and fan-fic.
Give us some background. What makes you, you.
My parents - they let me read everything I wanted uncensored. Blame them.
What do you think makes a good story?
It's magic. Seriously. Some just have what others don't. And it's different for every reader.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
Getting into my current position.
What is your biggest failure?
The fact that I still have to work and do not own an island.
As George R.R. Martin once put it, he's a gardener when it comes to writing, meaning he plants a seed and lets it grow, not knowing what it's going to be until it grows. Then again, he acknowledges some writers are architects, planning their projects in meticulous fashion. Which are you, gardener or architect and why?
When it comes to writing, I'm a hobo. Or a trophy wife. All right, I don't really know how either of these lives, but I just do what I feel like when the mood strikes me. In writing. Not in real life.
Are any character experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I guess they all are, more or less. Though I never had sex with six vampires at once, so I guess some are souped up.
Do you write naked? (couldn't resist!)
I wish. Or, at least, in a bikini. Something to strive for, definitely.
Which of your characters would you want to date?
All the boys are hot, so that makes them all basically dateable. But they are all kind of nuts, so none are marriageable. Then again, most men you fall in love with when you are young are that way, no?
How do you choose the titles for your book, and what made you pick Interregnum?
"Interregnum" is a book written by a "Split Game" series character who had reached an impasse. A "time between times" in his life. But in the book itself, "interregnum" is the period between governments, when the military had taken over the country. I was drawn to the idea of a character identifying not with a character, but with an entire story - feeling misdirected and torn, and making a fictional society reflect his state of mind.
What is your best editing tip?
If you are not cutting out at least half of what you've written, you are doing something wrong.
What are you working on at the minute?
Finishing "Interregnum," doing notes for a "Book Sleuth," and gearing up to being rejected by batches of agents.
How do you manage deadlines and priorities?
Whatever is on fire gets done first. Everything else waits until it is on fire.
Who designed the covers?
I do. But I steal from Milo Manara.
If her answers had you laughing, take a chance and add Interregnum to your read list!
