The Lost Girl
We have someone with me today who is a fan of a certain amazing film. As such, she's now my favourite person. For today at least. Tomorrow... meh...
Anywho, what's your name?
Donna
Yo, Donna. Where are you from?
I'm from Connecticut. I currently live in Arizona. USA.
Have you ever been to King Arthur's Court? Just wondering. Do you like living there? If not, where would your favourite place to live be? Is yes, where would you least like to live?
Yes, although it's a bit dry and does have a few days of insufferable heat. Still, I'll take it over cold and snow any day. My FAVORITE place to live would be on the ocean, namely in California. Even namelier around Santa Cruz.
Snow is cool, though! Okay, so it's a bit more than cool, it's ice cold, but you get my drift. You can't exactly do dust angels, can you? It's a pity you can't have warm snow – and not just the yellow kind. As you're a writer, is this your 'day job'?
How I wish. Although my day job is as an UNDERwriter. No relation, unfortunately. But it pays me far better than just being a writer would. Unless I were Stephen King, which I'm not.
You're not? Oh, you almost had me fooled. When you said underwriter, I thought you'd said undertaker. Stephen King would have been interested then! Tell me about your latest project.
It's about the vampire apocalypse and the only tool humans have in their fight against the blood-suckers is faith. Any faith, any religion. I'm rebooting what's up now, TRIALS OF FAITH, into the newly titled BEFORE I'M DEAD that will come with a new cover, new story, and new protagonist. Same world, just everything else will be entirely different.
That's sounds fab. It's quite different to holy water, a cross and sunlight at least. The reboot sounds like a lot of work but I'm definitely into the premise! How do you feel about bacon? A crazy person once said it was the food of the gods. OK, I admit that person was myself...
It truly is a glorious food and goes well with almost anything.
Almost? So what doesn't it go with? Well, maybe ice cream. I once had crispy bacon flavour vodka shots. They can put that stuff in anything! What is your favourite film?
The Lost Boys, a 1987 vampire flick by Joel Schumacher and it's glorious.

Yes it is. So good you could almost cry, little sister! Have you always wanted to be a writer, or is it something you found yourself doing one day?
It's pretty much always been my thing. I distinctly remember starting to write when I was 9. I haven't stopped since.
I wonder what trigger it when you were nine. Was it the fear or anticipation of leaving the single digit years behind you and wading up to your neck in two figures? Do you have so many ideas they dribble out of your nose if you don't get them down, or do you have to hunt around the floor and the back of your sofa to find where your Muse is hiding?
I have more ideas than I know what to do with. I don't utilize a Muse. I find they just get in the way.
They can be slippery little so and sos, that's for sure. Besides, where would you put them? They want food and clothing and driving about everywhere... Oh, wait. That's kids. If you were in an asylum, what would your particular delusion or psychosis be?
Schizophrenia, probably.
Nice. Unless you suffer from it, where it's probably not nice. Hey, as you're not really sitting in this asylum with me (she is, really, folks), does that mean I'm a voice in your head and you're already on your way? Or you're a voice in my head and I'm meant to be in here? Or even, you're a voice in the head of a voice in Shaun's head?? Phew, I'm getting dizzy! What genre(s) do you write?
Young adult fantasy, paranormal/supernatural, horror, fanfiction.
Is that all in the same book? I think that's awesome. And I never use the term awesome! Except just then. What genres(s) do you read?
All of the above plus historical fiction, some non-fiction, and the occasional literary novel.
Cool. Like snow angels. You sweep your arms and all sorts of genres (or snow flakes, get caught in your grasp. If these are the same, what attracts you to them. If they're different, why do you think that is?
I like the escapism they bring when I read and write. I can get lost in a whole different world, even if it's historical fiction. I just immerse myself in it and while away my time.
That's one of the best things (apart from supporting wonky table legs) about books. Each book can take you on a different journey. It can be a time machine, spaceship or vehicle to somewhere and somewhen completely new. Love it. And, bacon – just cooked or crispy?
Crispy on the verge of burnt.
Just on the verge – teetering on the precipice between taste and tough? Yum. You're entering your work into the Wattys for 2016. Watt story (do you see what I did there?) are you entering? Tell us about it!
I'm entering my Changing Light series (HUNTED, AND THEN THERE WERE TWO, and RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE NIGHT which is not yet posted), my Lost Boys fanfiction about a young woman who moves from New York to Santa Carla and gets herself caught up with a bunch of vampires after one of them tries to kill her. The story timeline is she getting introduced to the group and becoming a vampire (HUNTED), Star and Laddie get introduced to the group and my protagonist is adjusting to her new vampire life (ATTWT), and then it follows the movie itself with a few twists (RAGE).
I'll also be entering my rebooted BEFORE I'M DEAD since I intend to have that up and qualifying before the deadline.
Lost Boys fanfiction. Sounds too good to be true. That's most definitely going on my reading list! Now you're in the asylum with me, how do you aim to get out? Do you have an escape plan?
Collude with some of the guards to fake my own death and escape via a corpse tunnel?
The thing is, colluding with them could mean your death won't be faked. I'm not pointing any fingers or anything (I'm likely to get them chopped off), but you want to watch out with them. But hey, you could try it. Just in case, could you lend me a copy of your Lost Boys books? I've just realised, they don't allow us access to digital devices in here.
Just in case (like I said), here's a little more about Donna. She's off chatting with the orderlies. We might not see her again...
Donna has been writing since she was in the single digits when she first realized she needed to do something about all the thoughts in her head. After a stint with bad poetry she finally found her way to novels, mainly of the young adult fantasy variety. When she's not cranking out more stories she works a regular 9 to 5, reads anywhere from 2 to 3 books a week, drinks copious amounts of tea, eats way too much, and makes her own beauty products because her skin turns into a sentient hive if she uses anything else. This is mostly because she lives in the desert where the air siphons water clean out of her. She lives with a man named Steve and several quadrupeds: three cats named Renfield, Sam, and Dean; and a MinPin named Malfoy.
