Snow - The Assassin and the Bar

Why did the assassin meet the girl in a bar? Tequila!

I just made that up. Can you tell? Don't worry, you'll see the relevance later. Probably. Maybe...

Another day, another dollar. Or, rather, another day, another dose of whatever your poison is. Whether it's given out by pill or needle, the day doesn't matter, just as long as you roll up your sleeve or swallow.

And that, my friends, is how you start on a cheery note.

Another day (I'll continue), another visitor. What's your name?

Claudia Mori

Claudia, hello. Good to meet you. Where are you from?

Middle of Nowhere, Vermont

Population 1 plus a couple of dinky little spiders, Miss Muffet? Do you like living there? If not, where would your favourite place to live be? Is yes, where would you least like to live?

I never liked growing up in a small town where rumors spread like wildfire. Luckily, I go to college in New York City now. No one knows who I am, and I can be anyone I want to be. I can't imagine living anywhere else now!

Those rumors. They're almost as bad as rumours. They spread so fast and can burn all who come in contact with them. Pesky things. At least you can be who you want now. You are able to create a whole new and improved you. That can't be bad. I wish I could create a new me and forget this one. I'd be just ordinary. A normal guy. Anywho, what do you do for a living, and is it your dream job?

I'm a full-time student. I'm a junior in college, majoring in journalism. My dream job is to work as an editor for a major news organization.

Big aspirations! Good for you! Priorities, though - how do you feel about bacon? A crazy person once said it was the food of the gods. OK, I admit that person was myself...

I completely agree. Pancakes with bacon is my favorite food in the world.

You can get bacon pancakes? Cool! Oh, you probably meant pancakes with bacon. Hmmm. Yay. What is your favourite film?

Up. In particular, the opening scene. I cried like a baby.

Well, that's certainly a new one! I do like the film, the answer was just unexpected. Wouldn't it be great to have all those balloons? Unless you're Cyril, of course. He suffers from a globophobia – the fear of balloons. Granted, that's not why he's in here. He's a resident of this wonderful establishment because... Oh, my apologies. We were talking about you. What's your opinion of log cabins?

My family owns a log cabin in Vermont. I used to love going there when I was younger, but since my family became a big mess we rarely use it anymore. It comes in handy for secret escapades.

It must do, especially if you know you won't be disturbed. I notice you said escapades rather than escapes. Very intriguing. And snow?

Very mixed feelings. I have a bittersweet memory from when I was fourteen years old. I clearly remember because it happened on Valentine's Day and it snowed. It was one of the best and worst days of my life.

That's young to fall out of love with snow. You should still be enjoying snaw balls and angels. And, if you were in an asylum, what would your particular delusion or psychosis be?

I wouldn't be able to trust anyone and would think that everyone is out to get me.

Well, they are! Watch your back! Only joking. Mostly. I sound like Newt from Aliens (love that film). The monsters mostly come out at night. Mostly. Hey-ho. What sort of books do you like to read, or do you think there's no point when you can just watch the movie?

I like to read mystery/thrillers, particularly crime novels. I also really like jigsaw puzzles. It's something I would do with my dad.

That's cool. I haven't done a jigsaw since... I don't know when. I don't recall them being a big part of my childhood – along with doing anything with my father... Moving on. Bacon – just cooked or crispy?

Are you kidding? Crispy all the way.

I apologise. How foolish of me! Please, tell us about your adventures in the Snow anthology!

It all started during winter break. The day after New Year's—at a bar, to be exact. That's when I ran into Lucas, my old crush that I hadn't seen since high school. I don't want to give the rest away, but let's just say that drinking a lot of tequila can lead to serious consequences, including a trip to the hospital and shacking up in a log cabin with a hot guy who once broke your heart.

Tequila can be blamed, I'm sure, for a great many serious consequences! Hell of a way to kick off the new year! Now you're in the asylum with me, how do you aim to get out? Do you have an escape plan?

I've never been good at making plans. I'll have to count on Lucas to rescue me! He's the smart one of the two of us.

Yeah... About that. He's currently sleeping soundly (he's had help) in Room 101. Very smart of him, trying to rescue you from an asylum and pretending to be insane to get in. That was a pretence, wasn't it?
