Chapter 33 Signpost

No one's POV

Ryu only walked. He walked at the mountain with his mind barely functioning as he carried his dead little sister body on his back. He slowly went north as far away from the base where his former comrades were currently doing battle against the rebel army. Within that mountain, he saw smokes rising from one particular place. That was the place he needed to go, since he knew someone was waiting for him there. And so he walked towards the high end mountain where there he saw a cabin.

There he saw two people grilling a meat from a danger beast they killed. Of course the two latter noticed Ryu's approached. The one with the white hood stood up already attempting to fight.

???: Are you one of the Empire Assassin?

???: Wait Bulat. There's no need to fight. I know who he is.

The woman next to the hooded man name Bulat stopped him in his tracks. Her voice was firm, eyes filled with guilt when she saw the girl Ryu was carrying. Ryu however shows no sign of hostility towards the two figures. His eyes were nothing but void. Without any strength left to keep his conscious mind from going, he dropped towards the ground.

Ryu:...

???: Bulat! Go and save him! He is—

That was all he heard before slowly falling to a deep sleep.

After defeating the last of her enemy and mourning for the death of her friend Green, Akame went around to look for her partner hoping he was alright only to glanced to further up the mountain. The city where she had some acquaintances were now on fire.

Akame: Why's the city...on fire?

???: That was the point of our operation, Akame.

Akame turned her head around, the ravenette looking to see Kairi walking up to her. A cold and indifferent face was on his.

Kairi: Our mission was to execute all those affiliated with the Rebel Army. That village was supporting Mount Hakuba. You helped us get rid of all those annoying government officials and greedy merchants.

Akame look back with disbelief.

Akame: What..?

Kairi: We executed them. The enemy knew the city would burn...so they came down the mountain to help.

Akame: So you burned the city? What about the civilians?

Kairi: Looks like the Incineration Squad went a little overboard. They massacred everyone to make an example of them. Alongside Ryu...

Akame: What...?!

Akame look of disbelief turned to pure shocked when she heard Ryu was also burnt. Before she could comprehend what Kairi had said, he continued.

Kairi: That friend of yours Najasho was fighting Ryu when he throws Ryu near the village. From what the spies told us, Ryu was trying to save the civilians from getting burnt.

Akame: So you burnt him too?!

Kairi: The incineration squad probably doesn't know that Ryu was with the Empire.

(Timeskip)

After heading back towards their hideout to recuperate her exhausted body, Akame went head back to the city after the fire had burned down. She walked in horror as she traversed around the city. Burned bodies lied dead all over the place, some of them were in positions of them trying to escape. However, her eyes widened in horror even more when she came across a house burned to ash.

Akame(mind): After everyone I've killed and everyone I've made an enemy of.. what have I even accomplished? I wanted the people here to be happy. But instead, they ended up burned to ashes.

Coming across her sight was something she didn't want to believe. Laying among the ash were two children. Akame knew these two as she would train them in her spare time when she spent time in the village. But what broke her the most was what she saw next to the burnt children. It was a gun. She knew right away it was Prometheus. Ryu's Shingu. And alongside the children, the gun was completely burnt down. She screamed in sadness, now knowing everything about their corrupt Empire and the death of her beloved partner.

Akame: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Akame wailed for the man whom had always given her closure. The man whom supported her his whole life ever since they were kids. The man whom she could share about absolutely everything. Her suspicious about the Empire was right. She weren't making the people happy. She was just doing the Empire's dirty work, killing the Rebel's that opposed the corrupt government. But not only that. They were also killing innocents. Innocents that had nothing to do with this. Innocents that were simply trying to get by. Akame continued to scream and cry in sadness even more, holding the gun weeping tears for the fallen.

(Elsewhere)

His mind was foggy but surely coming back towards him. He opened his eyes to see that he was inside a cabin that he didn't recognize.

???: Ah I see you are awake.

Looking towards his left, he saw the same woman he had tried to make contact with. She had short, silver hair and purple eyes. She wears an eyepatch where her right eye used to be. She wears a black suit that shows her cleavage. She has a green and black mechanical right arm. It was Najenda.

Ryu: !!

Seeing her Ryu immediately leap out of his bed and pinned her towards the wall strangling her with extreme strength. His eyes were filled with intense glare but also endless stream of tears.

Najenda: Ngh...!

Bulat:...!

Najenda: Bulat, stay where you are!

The man next to her immediately tried to kill Ryu who was attacking his boss. It was a tall muscular young man with blue eyes and black hair that he usually wore in a combed up, heart-shaped pompadour.

Bulat: But Boss!

Najenda: It's fine.

Ryu: You promised...

Ryu's voices was filled with deep lost as if he had no more reason to live.

Ryu: You promise you'd protect them. So why? Why is she there with no supervision? Why didn't you keep an eye on her like you promised? And now... she's... she's...

Najenda:...

His crimson-amethyst eyes filled with tears again, and all Najenda and Bulat could do was stare. No matter the circumstances, Najenda had promised Ryu that she would protect Tsukushi with her life until her death. So she had no excuses for what had happened. She took a deep breath and stared right back into Ryu's gaze.

Najenda: I have no excuse for what happened. And it was also my decision to sent her to a rural place where I had hope that the war would not reached. But I appear to be mistaken. So the dead of your little sister, Tsukushi was mine to blame.

Ryu:...

Najenda: So if taking my life would give you closure, then you are free to do it.

Najenda said eyes filled with resolution. Bulat who was standing near her was quiet. But he was surprised that her boss was offering her own life. If her boss is dead, the revolutionary army would received a damage beyond salvation. Ryu however betrayed Najenda and Bulat's expectation by releasing his hold on Najenda's neck and instead drop to his knees.

Ryu: No. Killing you will not satisfy me one bit. It's this corrupted empire's fault.

Ryu held his demonic arm to his face trying his best to end his tears. To Najenda and Bulat, Ryu looked like a man whom had live a hundred years of misery.

Najenda: You have her eyes.

Ryu: DON'T! I wish ... I wish I were dead ...

Najenda: And what use would that be to anyone?

Najenda said coldly.

Najenda: If you loved Tsukushi, if you truly loved her, then your way forward is clear.

Ryu seemed to peer through a haze of pain, and Najenda's words appeared to take a long time to reach him.

Ryu: What —what do you mean?

Najenda: You know how and why she died. Make sure it was not in vain. Help us changed this corrupted empire.

There was a long pause, and slowly Ryu regained control of himself, mastered his own breathing. Looking at his dead little sister for one last time, his face turned resolute. At last he said.

Ryu: Very well. But first, please tell me. Is — is Rose okay?

Hearing this, Najenda smile.

Najenda: She is. She's currently west near one of the revolutionary hideouts. She has become an indispensable member for us.

Hearing that his one last remaining little sister is still alive brought a relief smile to Ryu even if it's only temporary. Ryu spent the entire day with Najenda and Bulat telling them everything he had learned about the empire from the inside. About what kind of weapon and Teigu the Empire possess. Every valuable information was given to them without reserve.

Ryu: If it's alright with you, boss. Please let me bury Tsukushi's body and see Rose from the Shadow at least one. Just to confirm it with my own eyes.

Najenda: Very well. With your Lycanthrope power, I'm expecting you to get back fast.

Ryu: Deal. But I want both your words, that you won't share me being a Lycanthrope to anyone else. These stay between the three of us.

Najenda: I have no reason to.

Bulat: A handsome man like you already deserves my respect. I won't tell a soul.

After recuperating his body, Ryu stood up standing alone in a hidden room. There he saw a spare of new clothes since his old one was deterred and a note from Najenda.

'Your clothes were wrecked so I prepared a new one. It's perfect for a Vampire like you.'

After reading the note, he put down the note and tried on his new clothes. After he was done, he step out of the cabin where Najenda and Bulat were. There they saw Ryu's new look. He was wearing an entire set of black clothing. There are also tinges of red sewn in throughout the clothing.

Bulat: Truly handsome.

Najenda: Perfect. A Grim Reaper of the Night. We're welcome to have you on board, Ryu Vampir.

Ryu: I will fight for the sake of what is right. Tsukushi's last wish, and for the good of the people alongside the revolutionary army.

Bulat: Right on.

Najenda: As promised, I'll give you the exact locations where Rose is currently at.

Ryu: Thank you. I'll return as soon as possible.

With one last bow, Ryu leap off with Tsukushi in his arm so he could bury her somewhere while also going to where his other little sister Rose is. Before he get to far, he heard Najenda's voice and a voice he knew all to well.

Najenda: You must be an assassin from the empire. I've been waiting for you.

Akame: So you knew I was coming, then.

Ryu(mind): Akame...

Ryu couldn't believe she was here. She must have gotten a mission that was similar to the last one. Assassinate the former general of the Empire, Najenda. And so Akame traveled to where Najenda's last known location is which being deep in the mountains. In the same cabin where Ryu had just been recently, she encountered the former general there with her bodyguard, Bulat.

Ryu(mind): I wish I could see you sooner. But I got a job to do. And knowing you, you'll do the right thing.

Knowing Akame's personality he knew she would follow her heart. And he was convinced that Najenda could convinced Akame as well. With that in mind, Ryu left the spot not watching the confrontation between Akame and Najenda.

Ryu(mind): We'll see each other again, I promise you.
