I sighed as I set my phone down.

"Who were you talking to?" my dad grumbled from where he was standing. He looked down at me as I was sitting on the kitchen stool.

"Michael," I muttered.

"Oh that boy that you've been talking to, that for all we know could be a 40 year old creep!" my dad exclaimed.

"We FaceTime all the time and I've seen him in person," I muttered.

"Correction, you saw him on stage and he could've possibly not recognized you," my mom chirped.

"Yes he did. His band member came and talked to me," I said.

"Yes, yes sweetie. That must've been a lovely dream you had," my mom said smiling sarcastically.

"Whatever," I mumbled.

I got off of the stool and grabbed my car keys from the hook.

"I'll be back whenever," I said slamming the door shut, not waiting for a response.

I walked outside to my car as the cool air nipped at my skin. It was really cold saying it was mid October, leaving me confused. I was glad that I had a few extra sweatshirts in my car but now I had no idea where to go.

I got into my car and pulled out my phone. I dialed my older brother Halen and hoped he would respond. He was so lucky that he had moved out of the house and living on his own. He was going to a college about half an hour away and I really missed visiting him. He was still living at his apartment near campus during this time of year. I don't blame him. I'd want to be as far away from our parents too.

You'd think that since my parents named my brother after the band Van Halen they'd be fine with me having a friend in a band, but I guess not.

Halen didn't respond but I decided to drive to his apartment building anyways. I started driving, blasting Voodoo Doll from the album Michael had sent me. I had gotten it two weeks before everyone else. I guess you could say I was special.

I pulled onto the highway and started driving towards my brother's apartment.

"Halen, are you here?" I yelled into his apartment. I had used the spare key and was now stepping inside.

I got no response so I went further into the complex.

"Yeah, coming!" I heard a yell coming from his room.

Out came my brother in skinny jeans and with damp hair.

"Sorry, I was in the shower Soph," he said pulling me into a hug and I quickly hugged him back.

"That makes sense, what are you up to tonight?" I asked.

"You really drove all the way here just to ask if I had plans?" Halen asked amused. I rolled my eyes at him.

"No, Mom and Dad were arguing again so I left," I said shrugging my shoulders.

"Again?" Halen asked sighing.

"Yes," I huffed.

"What was it about this time?" he asked.

"That I'm waiting a year for college," I mumbled. He still didn't know that was my plan and I was scared what he would think.

"I wish I had done that and I'm excited for you. Make sure you live that year to it's potential," he said smiling.

I let out a sigh of relief.

"So, do you have plans tonight?" I asked.

"Yeah, I'm going to see a friend's local band at the pub," he said shrugging his shoulders.

"Can I go?" I asked.

"And maybe stay the night?" I added.

"Of course, your stuff is still in the hall closet from last time," Halen said rolling his eyes.

"I'm going to go put on a shirt and we can go," he smiled.
