Chapter 3 - Adrijan Kosos (Re-Write)
"What do you want from me Adrijan, I'm guessing it's not just my company?" She said, flashing me a smile.
"Veronica, you know what I came for and it's very important that you give it to me!"
"Adrijan, Darling! We are In In Korčula to enjoy ourselves, Can't we talk business later?" She said as she played with her bouncy blonde curls.
I took a huge glug of my gin and tonic and sighed as I knew this wouldn't be easy. I looked at my watch and realised it had been almost an hour since we ordered our meal.
"Do you want me to get a waiter?" I asked her, she shook her head and raised her hand in the air.
"Waiter! Hello? We have been waiting for our food for over an hour!" She screeched as she clicked her fingers loudly, everyone turned to face us and I shrunk in my seat.
This is why I could never be with a women like Veronica, She is just so impossible to be with, she is a rich and spoiled brat.
A waiter came over to our table with a tray of food. He was very skinny and was rather old. He had glasses perched on the end of his nose. As he walked towards us his expression changed to one of fear as he saw Veronica staring at him. As he began to apologize Veronica kept yelling at him and I could see him pulling on his collar as he tried to back away.
"Veronica." I was trying to get her attention.
"Do you know who my father is? You could lose your job for this!" she threatened, pointing a finger at him.
"Veronica, leave him alone, you should be grateful for the food." I politely stated. She suddenly stopped yelling and waved the man away. I gave him an apologetic glance and wished I could just leave but I needed to get what I came for.
I started to eat the Zagrebački odrezak I had ordered. It was just veal steaks stuffed with cheese and ham which was then grilled in breadcrumbs. I was eating slowly when I saw veronica jab her fork in MY steak and eat a huge mouthful.
I just sort of stared at her in disbelief. Our paths have crossed a few times but I don't know her well enough to let her eat off my plate. I've had enough now and just drank the last of my gin and tonic.
"Look Veronica, I have to get going, you know why I am here so Why can't you give me the information?" I said banging my fists on the table.
She rolled her head back laughing. Somehow this was all a joke to her, one big game. She played with her blonde curls for a moment and then gave me a seductive smile.
"What information do you require then moja ljubav?"
"Information regarding an ex flame of yours, Vladimir Broz."
As soon as I said those words everyone in the restaurant looked at me. The whole room went silent.
Veronica leaned over the table and grabbed me by my tie, almost dragging me across the table towards her. Her once blue eyes turned a darker green, Full of anger.
"Don't you dare speak his name, you hear me! That man has caused enough corruption already." Snapped Veronica, she pushed me back into my chair glaring at me.
A burly waiter came over to our table.
"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"That's ok, he already was!" She uttered in complete disgust.
"Not quite yet!" I smirked, showing the waiter a small card.
Naziv: Adrijan Kosos
Starost: 27
mjesto rođena: Korčula, Croatia
Member of Vojno-obavještajna bojna
The waiter went a shade of white and apologized as he backed away.
I let out a small laugh. I wasn't going to hurt him!
"What did you show him?" Asked Veronica, clearly interested. I showed her the card before putting it in my pocket.
"You know you're older than you said you were." She smiled.
"Is that all you noticed?" I said through gritted teeth.
"No! Why didn't you tell me you worked for the battalions?
"I guess it slipped my mind?" I said with a shrug.
"Look, Do you want this information or not?" She asked. I nodded and pulled out a pen and small notepad from my pocket. I motioned for her to start at the beginning.
"A few weeks ago, when I was still with Vladimir, he started to be on the phone all the time, always talking to someone called...um...Drake Marshall? I think that's it Anyway he was planning something big, Not local news Big but Worldwide.."
I was busily scribbling this down.
"They were always talking about a computer chip or something and also a place called the cheese grater or was it the carrot or..." She was listing loads of vegetables, ok she has officially lost her marbles.
"Thank you Veronica, It was nice to catch up but I must be going now." I said getting up and putting my notebook and pen away and kissing her hand.
"Adrijan, Where are you Going?" she screeched at the top of her lungs as I left the restaurant at top speed. I ran down the steps and out into the main streets. It was around 8pm and the roads were filled with people heading to the evenings markets. I weaved in and out of the passers-by and into a dark alley, disappearing into the shadows.
I have been able to use this talent of blending in to my advantage. I can sneak into places with out being caught and that's why I'm the one who is usually put on the more high profile cases to collect the information and defeat or assassinate the enemy.
After a while of walking I stepped out of the alley ways and out into the open air. I walked through the streets past the shops and restaurants and up to the abandoned library. A few children playing on the steps. I walked up to one of the windows and peered through. Suddenly a hand grabbed my arm and pulled me through the window.
I was dragged into a large space with people dotted around the room working on different stations in headquarters. I almost tripped over my feet as I came face to face with one of my good friends.
"Luka, why did you pull me through the window, I almost cut myself on the broken pane!"
"Quit nagging Adrijan! Have you read Tomorrows newspaper?" He said as he thrust it into my hands. I looked down at the front page to see a huge image of Veronica yelling at me as I ran out of the restaurant. The headlined that accompanied it said "Veronica stood up by her new model Boyfriend."
"Model Boyfriend?" I asked. Luka just shrugged and I followed him up a windy set of stairs.
"FYI Katerina is looking for you, you might as well be a dead man walking."
I groaned and placed my hand on my forehead. Katerina Was the Head of the Battalions, she just happened to also be my boss. I shuddered at the thought of having to face her.
We finally reached her office and Luka took the newspaper back with him.
"Good luck my friend." He said as he departed back to the lower floors.
Katerina's Office
This was gonna be bad, I could sense it
I knocked on the door of Katerina's office and she called me in.
"Katerina You wanted to -" I was immediately cut off
"Sit down Adrijan" she commanded
Before I could utter another word she went absolutely Rage.
" Have you seen the newspaper? You and one of Croatia's most High Profile stars seen in a compromising situation have graced the front cover of one of the well know newspapers in this country. Why the hell were you there anyway?" She yelled as she threw the newspaper at my face. I dodged it with precision and tried to explain.
"Katerina, Veronica would only meet me for dinner, you know how she is."
"Don't 'Katerina' me! I am still your boss Adrijan, your superior and you must address me as such!" She yelled loudly in a stern tone. I had never seen a women shout that much.
"How dare you put our reputation on the line! You are representing the special battalions force of Croatia! We are the elite and people look up to us to make them feel safe."
I had never been more terrified in my life, especially of a woman.
"Sorry Mam". I said. She sat in her chair and rubbed her temples.
"Adrijan, you are my best Assassin, But you crossed the line. If you didn't obtain the information then I have no choice but to relieve you of your position.
I rummaged through my pocket and pulled out my notebook and handed it to her. She started flicking through it and making notes.
"Veronica said that Vladimir was always talking to a man called Drake Marshall and that he was planning something Worldwide Big. She also mentioned a computer chip."
"Is that it?" she asked eyeing me.
"Veronica also mention a building called the Carrot or cheese grater or something."
"The gherkin?" she questioned.
"No Boss, It sounded like she was making a shopping list."
"No Adrijan, The Gherkin is a huge building in London. If I'm correct Drake Marshall owns a club right at the top."
She grabbed her phone and started dialling a number.
"Hello James, It's me Katerina from The Battalions. Yeah I'm fine. I require some information about a known Criminal of yours. Drake Marshall? Yeah I'll hold." She was on the phone to James. I knew who he was, we had worked together before but it has been a long time.
"So he does own the club right at the top? Very interesting. I'm sending one of my Agents to investigate. Adrijan Kosos? Yes that's the one. Drake will be at the Gherkin tomorrow at Midnight? Perfect. Thank you James. Goodbye." She put the phone down and she wrote a few things down on a bit of paper and handed it to me.
"What's this?" I asked, a little confused.
She laughed and then handed me a plane ticket. How in gods name did she book it so fast?
"Looks like you're going to London."
