9: Say Goodbye to the Red Octopus
Piper:
"Good morning," I said, waving to Kyle the security guard. I sat my coat and cup of coffee on the conveyor belt and walked through the metal detector.
"Why Saturday?" I mumbled, grabbing my coffee and searching for Mindy.
"Gwod murning" she said, chewing the potato chip in her mouth. Mindy never cared about being healthy. She ate what she wanted, and was still as skinny as a twig.
"Potato chips for breakfast? Really?" I said, snatching the bag from her grasp. I quickly walked to the trash bin, threw it away, and grabbed a protein drink from the fridge. I threw it just in time for her to catch it.
"Good morning Ms. Smith," My boss said, gesturing to the elevator. I glanced in concern to Mindy then clicked the button.
"What is it you wanted to talk about?" I asked walking into the elevator. No answer. When we reached the top I stepped out to see a gigantic, red octopus painted on the ground.
We were on the roof.
"I'm so sorry, Ms. Piper Smith," he started, a sound of concern in his voice. I was once again held at gunpoint. This time by my own boss.
"We... aren't... the good guys... are we?..." I asked, stuttering at every word. I kept backing up, hoping I could find the door. When I felt the edge one thought passed through my mind. 'Falling would be better than bleeding.' I firmly placed my hands on the concrete edge ready to jump.
"Hail Hydra," he said growing closer ready to shoot.
I looked him in the eyes one last time saying. "Screw Hydra!"
------------
Wind swept through my hair as I fell to my death. I could only hope Spidey was somewhere nearby. The ground sped toward me.
I was starting to panic when a dark toned man with what seemed to be metal wings caught me. Trying to focus on him and not how high I was. I looked straight through his red goggles. He was the man who tripped me.
"You?" I said, keeping my eyes on him and not the top of the Empire State building.
"Walk much?"he exclaimed, landing in an ally right next to a pizza joint.
"Thank you for saving me from my impending doom. Thank God you can fly better than you can walk."
"I just have one question for you. Why were you falling?" He asked, as his wings compacted into the shape of a backpack.
"You're an Avenger aren't you?"
"I asked you first."
"For the past three years, I have been told that Hydra is good, and the Avengers are bad." "I don't know what their plan is but I'm going to figure it out."
"Wait, hold up, hold up. You work for Hydra?" He asked, rubbing his head in confusion.
"Well, I did. Never mind" I said trying to change the subject. "Thank you for saving me Mr...?"
"Wilson, Sam Wilson; and we're not done here." "Do you like coffee?" He asked raising his left eyebrow. I hadn't noticed until now how attractive he was. His black buzzed cut hair left nothing to the imagination with what seemed to be a lacking beard. But he was cute.
"Yes, I do..."I said, mentally slapping myself in the face. "But, I really need to go. So, maybe a rain check." Just like our first encounter, I walked quickly away, not looking back for a second.
I heard him shout. "What's your name?"
I stopped turned around and said. "Piper."
"Well, Piper, meet me at that Starbucks right there three o'clock sharp!" He said gesturing to the coffee shop. "And don't be late!" He gave me a very stern look, making me know for sure I had to be there.
