11: The First Date
Piper:
All night I sat and thought. I couldn't sleep, especially since I might be arrested or killed tomorrow. I wrapped up in a fleece blanket and walked to Lucy's room. I was ready to wake my friend when I noticed she was still up too.
Look at us: two poor, single, twenty-something year olds who couldn't sleep.
"You do realize it's three-thirty right?" I asked, sitting on the bed next to my friend.
"Yeah, I can't sleep."
"Me neither." I slipped under the covers. "I'll probably be fine. I did some research and I think we can trust them. Not to mention, most of the guys are hot, and sadly taken. Let's try and get some sleep." I turned on my side and closed my eyes.
------------
I woke squinting at the light. Lucy was already up and I could hear her cooking in the other room.
"Good morning." She handed me my panda mug with fresh coffee just the way I like it.
"Morning Lu," I said, grabbing my more casual look for the day. After breakfast we hurried out the door, running to the car. We were silent all the way to the courthouse where riots were striking up all around the building.
"Move!" I screamed, honking at the protesters who were covering the streets. Then I saw him.
Captain America was being walked into the courthouse once again; this time with a petite woman wearing a red jacket that said 'Stark Industries' and a buff shorter man with pale skin and dirty blond hair.
My stomach began to churn when I remembered what I had done to Cap. Finally, the crowd moved away from the roads and closer to the building, so that I could let Lucy out around the back.
"I will be fine. Have a good day at work" I said, giving her a tight hug, and driving away.
------------
When I arrived at the cafe, I saw him sitting there. His gaze was switching between a menu and the clock on the wall.
"Hello," I said, sitting across the table from him. His eyes left the menu and stared into mine, piercing my soul. If he was going to arrest me, he was going to look hot doing it.
"Let me properly introduce myself," he started. "My name is Sam Wilson..." Now that I wasn't falling from a building, I realized that I had heard the name before.
"The China house!" I blurted out. A look of confusion and concern covered Sam's face as he stopped talking and stared. "I heard your name at the China house... And I kind of let everyone know that Captain America was there."
"That was you?" He exclaimed, "Steve was as red as a tomato after that one."
"Sorry," I said, blushing.
"It's okay. If you know Steve, he's not one to hold a grudge," he chuckled, "Now, what is it you do...did for..." He stopped and lowered his voice, "Hydra?"
"I was head scientist of ADP. Airborne Disease Prevention," I started, "Until my boss told me I had to make one. He knew that the best person to make a virus was the person preventing them. That's when we made Project Intercept. They brainwashed me to believe that you were the bad guys and they were the good guys," I paused, "Sam, they could use Project Intercept to destroy the world."
"Ms. Smith, I think it's time you met my friends," he said, getting up and extending his hand to help me off the stool.
"Wait. My roommate. I need to pick her up from the courthouse," I said, looking straight into those deep brown eyes.
"Isn't Steve there too?" He asked, his Jersey like accent peeking through every word.
"Uh... Yes, he is," I said, gritting my teeth. Lucy wasn't gonna like this.
He quickly took his phone out of his pocket, clicking the contact that read, 'On Your Left'.
"On your left?" I asked.
He quickly answered, "It's a long story."
