Episode 52:

Bani and Jai were fighting in the middle of a deserted road. Bani was shocked to know that Jai had absorbed the powers of Markaat when he killed her. She wanted to smack herself for not realising it sooner. Bholenath had clearly said that only she could kill Markaat and if Chandrakala was dead; it meant that someone else had her powers and was the new Markaat now. However, she did not let her disappointment show on her face or slow her down as she kept thrashing the 'ehsaan faramosh' Nag. Her anger and aggression fuelled by eons of betrayal and pain. It dawned upon her that it was Jai who manipulated the planets against her as only someone with Markaat powers could do that. This gave her another reason to want to end this low life who was currently trapped in her tail.

Jai somehow got his palm out of her tight hold. He had pined for her for ages, eons! Her powers to be exact. He had manipulated, lied and killed for it. Hell, he even killed his own mother and did something as major as manipulation of planetary movements, something against the nature; only for her powers and he would not accept defeat after so much hard work and backstabbing. He concentrated on his powers and attacked her. She went off balance and that made her lose her hold on him.

Jai looked at the sky and invoked his powers to see the movements of the stars.

J: (thinks) Almost time. Mujhe ab isse bs kuch samaye aur bhatka kr rakhna hai. Jaise hi vo do grah takrayenge, Bani pr laga mrityu yog apna asar dikhate hue bhuchaal le ayega. Pr tb tk ke liye isse kaboo me kaise karu?

It clicked to him that he still had a vile of the special potion he made to entrap her but somehow she had escaped it twice. He threw it on her while she was still busy.

J: tch! tch! ...third time is the charm.

Bani stood there frozen while Jai began to laugh. Suddenly, he heard a sound of tires screeching and looked at Veer speeding their way.

J: Not bad! Great timing bade bhaiya...

Jai quickly turned into a small snake and climbed a branch and observed. Veer noticed Bani standing very still in the middle of the road.

V: ye Bani yahan? Nahi! Ye veham hai...jadugarni ka jadoo hai...

Veer sped up his car and hit Bani. She was hardened like a statue and this impacted both the car and her. Veer looked back in shock as he felt the collision. Bani had fallen down, her eyes open wide. She looked dead and pale. Veer's mouth opened in shock, his own car was going out of control but that was least of his concerns.

V: BANI!

He screamed but his car hit a giant tree and the collision caused him to hit fast against the steering wheel.

V: Bani!!

He whispered as he lost consciousness.

Jai led out a shrill laugh.

J: Bade bhaiya to gaye!...aur nahi bhi gaye to kuch der me tumhare ta-ta bolne ke baad jb mujhe shaktiyan milengi na, tb unhe bhej dunga tumhare pass.

Jai smirked evilly as he picked up Bani's statue-d body with his tail and crawled to some ruins of a house. He kept her there and went to prepare for the time when he would kill her. He calls Daksh.

Phone Call.

Jai: Sun!

Daksh: Shh....tune mujhe phone kyu kiya hai?

Jai: abe Cheel! sun meri baat...Tera bhai behosh pada hai poorani pahadi ke raste me. Utha ke le jaana.

Daksh: Deal sirf uss Naagin ki thi. Don't you dare harm Bhai!

Jai: Mujhe interest bhi nahi hai and uske behosh hone me mera hath bhi nahi hai.

Daksh: accha vo naagin kahan hai?

Jai: usse tujhe kya?

Daksh: Zyada over smart mt ban! Deal powers divide krne ki thi...

Jai: (thinks- isse ganta kuch milega! Bewakoof) arey to maine kahan kuch kiya hai! Tere bhai ki harkaton ne bhaga diya hai us Naagin ko..abhi tk dhoond hi raha hoon. Galti se bhi ghar aye to batana.

Daksh: Nahi aayi toh?

Jai: to hum kl ek khaas yagya karenge to usse hum tk kheench layega pr abhi tum sb ghar hi raho and bs is Veer ko le jao....

Phone call ends

Jai smiled evilly. Yagya! Ha! Kl tk to shaktiyan meri ho chuki hongi aur ye naagin khatam. Krtne rehna jitney bhi yagya krne ho tb....kuch nahi hoga...bs is cheel ko le jaye. Kahin isse hosh aa gaya to pata nahi ye sir-phira kya karega. Abhi is pr time invest nahi krna mujhe.

On the other hand, Daksh ended the phone and turned to say everything to Ponky who was sitting next to him, curious. He then turned to go get Veer when he got shocked looking at three pairs of eyes that were  looking at them with anger and disappointment.

Veer held his head in pain as he opened his eyes.

V: Ugh! Mujhe kya hua tha...mai yahan? Kahan hoon mai?

He felt weak and closed his eyes. The last image of his car colliding with Bani and hitting the tree while she lay lifeless flashed before him.

V: Bani!! Kahan gayi..

He looked at empty roads.

V: Kyu? Kyu tum mujhe apni lagti ho? Kyu?...ye mujhe kya ho raha hai? ....jb maine tumhe hit kiya tha...tb bhi...tb bhi mujhe kuch feel hua tha...kuch dikha tha...kya tha vo?...

He sat there, upset and confused. What added to his messy head was this invisible pull that he was feeling. He felt as something or someone was dragging him towards itself.

V: Ugh!!

Veer angrily threw away a large tree trunk.

V: Bohot hua! Veeranshu Singhania humesha apne mn ki sunta hai and ab mai wahi karunga!

He closed his eyes and opened them, his golden ones. Flapping his large wings, he followed where this invisible force was guiding him.

Meanwhile, Bani lay still in the ruins. Her heart aching for her husband and her unborn child. She wanted to ensure the safety of this baby as well as make sure that Veer was okay after that accident. She closed her eyes and prayed.

B: Hey Bholenath! Mai ek Naagin hoon aur ek Naagin ki bhakti aur Shakti dono shiv hi hai. Aap meri madat kijiye. Maine humesha apki sache man se aradhna ki hai, aap pr vishvas kiya hai aur mujhe poori umeed hai aaj bhi aap mujhe rasta dikhayenge.

Bani kept praying. At a distance, Jai was sitting on a rock, waiting for the right time to strike while keeping his eyes trained on Bani when a young girl touched his robes, breaking his concentration.

J: aye ladki! Bhaag yahan se..

Girl: Bhaiya, apne meri bhed dekhi hai?

J: Haan, mai kha gaya...

Girl: kya? Meri maa mujhe bohot maarengi...aap sach me kha gaye?

J: (kya musibat hai) mai koi janwar hoon? Nahi khai pr tum mera dimag mt khao, bhago yahan se.

While the girl distracted Jai, another girl entered the ruins and smiled at Bani. She placed a hand on her and left. All this while Bani kept praying. Slowly, she felt warmth spread through her and her body was getting less and less stiff with each passing moment. Then, she turned into a huge red snake and slithered away.

Jai who was getting irritated by the girl, shooed her away and turned to see Bani was gone. He entered the ruins but could not find her. He looked up to see that the time would come soon. He got angry while he started running like crazy.

Jai: (shouts while running) BANI! Mujhse bhaag rahi ho, par apni kismat se kaise bhagogi?!...ye mrityu yog tumhari jaan lekr rahega...tumhari saari shaktiyan iske milte hi kamzor ho jayengi, koi luck kaam nahi ayega...BANI! ahh!!

The girls looked at each other and smiled. They stood at a distance as they observed Jai go bonkers. They came back to their original self- Bela and Brinda. They smiled at each other, prayed for adi naagin and left.

Bani who was crawling away suddenly became human again. She understood that the planets have finally collided and she was going to get even more unlucky now. Everything had been turning against her but now it will get worst.

Veer suddenly landed in front of her. Relief coursed through her as she ran towards him but stopped herself from hugging him.

B: Mai- mai vo... (cries) mera vishvas karo, mai vo gale padne wali ladki nahi hoon...

V: Shh...

They both looked up to see the sky change its color. It was turning red like flames and they both knew it couldn't mean good.

V: Jldi Bani.

Veer lifted Bani in his arms and began flying away but as the planetary effect increased, Veer's powers began to decrease as well for he was helping her. Suddenly, he felt his wings pull back in and powers reducing. He slowed down and was lowering towards the ground when his wings were gone completely and they fell down.

V: Ye kya ho raha hai?

B: Vo dekho!

They looked up to see big rocks of fire come towards them. They both began running.

B: Veer! Vo dekho...chalo!

They both reached the steps of prachin nag mandir and ran in without stopping. Veer felt a jolt in his head as Satyug flashed before him.

V: Bani! Ye, ye kya tha?

B: Kya hua?

V: Tum kon ho?

B: mai samjhi nahi...

Veer stressed his head and realized it was him. Satyug is his story and he was Akesh. It was the same temple and standing before him was Nageshwari- his eternal love.

V: Nageshwari!

Bani hugged him tightly and sobbed.

B: Tumhe sb yaad aa gaya?

V: sb mtlb?

Bani shook her head and kept hugging him.

V: waise ye toh Nag mandir hai. Mai yahan andr kaise aaya?

B: Kyunki tum mere sacche sathi ho Veeranshu! Adi Naagin ke saathi hone ke naatey tum nag lok ke bhi kuch lagte ho....Bholenath ne hume swikara aur is mandir ne tumhe.

Veer stood there while Bani carefully closed all the doors of the temple. She lit the lamps.

B: Hey Bholenath! Mujhe pata hai meri shaktiyan abhi kamzor pad chuki hai! Is samay kaam nahi kar rahi aur bahar jo aag baras rahi hai, vo mujhe bhasm karna chahti hai pr mujhe pata hai, vishwas hai ki is mandir me mera koi kuch nahi bigar skta...raksha krna dev.

Bani began circling her idol with the lamp in her hand. Veer studied her.

Each passing moment bought more wreck. Jai ran around like crazy looking for Bani, the fire became more and more intense while the Singhanias grew restless to find Veer. It felt like the poorani pahadi had sealed itself. They couldn't enter its premises but only witness as red and black hues danced above it. Meera wailed in Tapish's arms, hoping for her sister's well-being while Balwant caught hold of Daksh and Ponky.

Balwant: Agar Veer ko kuch bhi hua na...KUCH BHI! To tumhara jo haal mai karunga na...tum soch bhi nahi skte.

Ponky had tears in his eyes but he looked down while Daksh looked away as well. Both felt very guilty.

Balwant: Uski kismat jhud gayi hai us Adi Naagin ke sath. Haan mai usse marna chahta tha isse pehle ki vo Veer se mille. Vo usse marna chahti thi. Pr kahani badli aur vo pyaar kr baiti Veer se. Mai usse phir bhi marna chahta tha pr mujhe ye ehsas ho gaya ki ab Veer aur Bani jhud chuke hai. Ek ka bura krna mtlb doosre ka bhi bura krna. Veer ko Bani yaad nahi hai phir bhi usse door jakr uski halat kya hui...dekhi na tumne...

Balwant was ranting away his anger while the Singhanias stood worried for the fate of the two people  who stood inside the temple.

The temple walls shook as winds threatened its windows and doors. The bells started to ring on their own accord but Bani's faith in her idol kept her going. She felt something pulling her outside but she felt as if her child was countering that pull. It was giving her strength. It was a smart Baby. She looked to see Veer was struggling as well. He was holding his head but staying there as well. Suddenly, the sounds got louder and scarier before a blast sounded near the gate and they both fainted.

Veer woke up first. The planetary movement was restored to its original state and the mritu yog had passed. Flashes of his life with Bani began coming to him and his eyes widened in realization. He looked around to see her on the floor. He rushed to her and lifted her in his arms.

V: Mujhe maaf kr do Bani! Sweetheart! Maine tumhare sath kaise vo sb...I am so so sorry sweetheart!

Veer began to tear up. The barrier in his memories was probably lifted by Bholenath or triggered by the events of the night but as old memories rushed in, they new ones became more and more painful.

B: Veeranshu! (She opened her eyes)

V: Sweetheart!

Bani closed her eyes.

B: heaven! Am I dead?

V: Bani! Ye kaise baaten kr rahi ho...Bani utho...

Bani woke up and realised it was really happening. She sobbed.

B: You remember?

V: Everything (he nodded)

Bani hugged him and began to sob.

They both sat their hugging and feeling each other's warmth. They parted when they heard shouting.

Balwant: Veer!

Tapish: BANI!

They rushed out of the temple to see the Singhanias flying and looking around for them.

B: Daddy ji! Bhai...hum yahan hai...Meera di, neeche dekhiye..

Meere, who was in Tapish's arms spotted them first and pointed out to the others. They reached towards them.

Smoke was coming off the ground and it looked like a storm had passed.

Meera coughed and hugged Bani.

M: tu safe hai Bani! Mai bata nahi skti ki mujhe kitni chinta ho rahi thi...Tum bhi Veer.

Veer gave her a thumbs up as his was enveloped in a bear hug by his father. Bani and the rest were standing and telling them what happened and Veer had Daksh and Ponky by their ears for poisoning his mind about Bani when he had forgotten her. All of a sudden, Bani jumped and landed away. She looked back to see an arrow had hit the ground where she had been standing earlier. She looked up see to see someone was standing in the shadows.

Bani realized it had happened before.

B: (thinks) kya ye aap ho?

The baby giggled.

B: thank you baby.. (speaks softly)

V: Kya?

B: kuch nahi (blushes)

V: dhyan do! (shouts)..KON HAI? Busdil! Samne aa..

Jai came forth. His entire body burnt and shining black and red.

J: Busdil hoga tu saale!

V: Saala to tu hai mera...waise new makeover?

J: Sb is Naagin ki wajah se! Maha mrityu yog laya tha maine is adi naagin ke liye...pr ye bach gayi to iska bhugtan kisko krna pada? Mujhe!...UGH!! Naagin, iska badla toh mai tujhse lekr rahunga...

Jai screamed and launched himself at her with a trishul in his hands. Veer closed his eyes and opened the golden ones while his black wings spread out.

V: aaja dhabewale.

But before he could reach either Veer or Bani, she transformed into a large snake and flicked her tail. Jai landed far.

V: Kya kr rahi ho Bani? Abhi bhi bachana hai isse?

B: Isse nahi tumhe. Adi Nag aur trishul ka gehra sambandh hota hai...aur ye koi mauli trishul nahi hai. Bholenath ka hai...Isse kiya hua adi naag ka vaar bohot ghatak hai, tum nahi lad paoge.

V: Bani!

B: Mai tumhe weak nahi samjhti pr tum samjho...is trishul se Jai Chandrakala ki shaktiyan cheen skta hai to tumhe bhi maar skta hai....

Bani changed into her majestic Naagin roop and raised her hands towards the sky. She closed her eyes and did a tandav. Everyone was taken aback by her bold moves. Veer was in awe of his wife's moves. It was his first time seeing her sway like a naagin.

V: (to himself) bad timing ...don't think all that Veer.

Bani hands suddenly brightened up as a trishul appeared before her.

B: aaja...aaj adi naagin ke hatho aadi naag ki maut ho hi jaye!

J: Vo to waqt hi batayega ki kon kisko marta hai.

A fight commenced between the two. The ground that had witnessed a storm not long ago witnessed another ferocious sight as the supposed 'saathis', the Adi couple began to fight. The temple in which Nageshwari killed herself for Hriday witnessed Bani fight Jai in front of it. The sound of trishul banging against each other vibrated in the surrounding as they began to fight. Suddenly, Bani lifted her trishul skilfully and Jai's trishul went away flying. Bani was about to pierce his chest when he fell into her feet.

J: Bani! Mai saathi hoon tumhara satyug ka...tum mujhe kaise maar skti hoo!

B: Makkar! Teri himmat kaise hui ye duhai dene ki...

Jai smirked and suddenly pulled at her feel. Bani tripped on her back but flipped at the last minute.

B: tum kabhi baaz nahi aaoge.

She turned into a huge snake and launched forward. Jai turned into a charcoal black snake and fought as well. His once grey-brown snake now as burnt as his whole body. The battled continued when bani suddenly trapped Jai in the folds of her tail and suffocated him. Jai turned back into his human form and coughed.

He tried to get his hands out to cast a spell when Veer pierced Jai's hands with his fallen trishul.

J: Tu! Saale mere hi trishul se mujhe hi!

Bani realised he was going to cast a spell but Veer's attack made his hands numb. She bit Jai, ending the low life snake and the part of Markaat that lived on, died with him.

V: trishul tera nahi shiv ji ka hai..adi naag ka hai...pr tu adi naag kehlane layak nahi hai.

Veer spat to Jai as he took his last breath.

Bani: Veeranshu!

She rushed to him and they shared a heartfelt hug. They checked each other for injuries.

B: waise tumne kaise vo trishul?

V: Maine to us shakura ko bhi issi se maara tha, yaad karo..

B: Haan!

V: Mai humesha se tumhara sathi tha...tum bs samjh nahi payi.

Bani got emotional and hugged him. The Singhanias fussed around them as well. Daksh and Ponky apologised. They were all leaving when Bani pulled Veer back.

B: Mujhe tumhe kuch kehna hai.

V: Haan...ek baar ghar challo, phir keh dena...

B: Nahi! abhi...

V: Bani!

The child giggled.

V: Mai abhi bhi pagal ho raha hoon..ye awazen ana abhi tk band nahi hui...

B: Aur hongi bhi nahi...poori life sunni hai..

V: kya?!

B: hmm..

She smiled at him lovingly and bought his hands to her stomach. Veer looked at her confused at the giggling got louder.

V: yeh?

B: (nods) humara baccha..

Veer got shocked at tears rushed down his eyes.

B: kuch to bolo veer!...tum...mai tumhe kbse se batana chati thi...I am pregnant pr tum tb mujhe pechante nahi they aur..

Veer stopped her by taking her into a tight hug. He sobbed and laughed. He didn't know how to react. He was going to be a dad! (Just imagine SM's reaction, he did a fab job as Veer)

The singhanias flew back down when they noticed they weren't followed by Vani.

Balwant: Veer tu kyu nahi uda? Sb thik hai na?

Veer ran and lifted Balwant!

V: Ballu! Tu dadu banne wala hai...mai dad banunga!

Balwant: Kya? Sach me... (He looks at Bani who nods)

Balwant cheers and pats Veer's back. Everyone congratulates Vani.

M: Accha isliye vo chakkar, vo ulti...ab samjhi mai..

B: Haan di

M: waise tune bataya kyu nahi..

B: Mai, mai sbse pehle Veer ko batana chahti thi di..

T: We understand Bani.

Balwant: aaj to party hogi...mai dada banunga!...ghar me bacha ayega...mai bata nahi skta mai kitna khush hoon...mere bete ka baccha!!

V: Chill dad! Relax...party kl karenge...abhi ab sbko rest ki zarurat hai...khaskar Bani

They all nod and reach the mansion.

Vani are hugging each other. Their life moments, right from their first meet, flashed before them.

B: Kitna kuch badal gaya na Veeranshu!

V: Haan, aur ab to humare baby bhi ayega...

B: haan...

V: Ladki hui to...veba naam rakhenge..

Bani laughed: accha?

V: haan!

B: aur ladka hua toh?

V: Banshu!

Both laugh.

V: Mai bhi kuch bhi bol raha hoon...khushi ke maare pagal ho gaya hoon.

B: hmm..

V: I am so sorry Bani. Aise time me bhi tum itna kuch akele seh rahi thi...you were pregnant and I treated you like a maid! Tumse itna kaam karwaya...stress diya..

B: shh...Veeranshu! jo beet gaya uski baat nahi krte...aane wala kl humara beautiful hoga...uspr gaur krte hai..

V: Haan sweetheart.

B: waise ye cheel hoga ya nag?

V: Kya pata..aap kya ho baby? Cheel?

Baby cried.

Bani asked excited: nag?

Baby cried.

V: Choro na Bani, usse nahi pata and bechare nanhe se ko stress mt do...let him come out first. Jb bhi hoga ya hogi, hum usse utna hi pyaar karenge

A few months passed away with all the Singhanias fussing over Bani, specially Veer. He wouldn't let her out of his sight and took special care of her. Tara got married meanwhile and all in all, life was looking up for them.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the ugly pits below Naglok, a weak, fully burnt Nag burned with agony and envy. It was Jai. He had betrayed nag vansh and upon his demise, he was banished in the deapest, darkest parts below the realm, his own hell. The entire lok celebrated his death while he rotted in the deapts of hell but even evil had followers. He smirked as he knew his followers would cause wreck. Afterall, the seed had been planted. He was dead and probably trapped forever for his deads but his bitter soul would not let Bani have her happily ever after. Hriday was too much of a jealous soul to let Nageshwari have her happiness. He could tolerate this torture hoping his evil followers would ruin Vani.

On the surface, his only follower moved, acting like a loyal dog and gathered more supporters. He convinved them by pointing out that the child Bani was carrying could be dangerous and must be killed.

Nag: Adi Naagin or ek Cheel ka baccha niyati ke virudh hai. Vo andhakar layega aur hume zimadari uthani chahiye. Ek acche bhavishye ke liye, uska marna zaruri hai

Rest: haan haan! zaruri hai.

Bani woke up with a jolt. She was feeling restless. Like something bad was going to happen. Veer had noticed her anxiety and bought her to his farm house to relax but that too did not seem to work. Bani was panicking and panting.

B: Utho Veeranshu! please wake up!

V: Kya hua Bani! are you okay?

B: Please chalo?

V: Kya hua?

B: please...chalo yahan se...

V: accha...relax sweetheart let's go.

Bani and Veeranshu headed out. It was a difficult pregnancy, given the baby was too strong- a genetic combination of the strongest Naagin and Cheel. Bani worried for her baby while Veer worried for her as they drove back towards their home. It was getting more and more difficult to drive through the storm. Suddenly, they heard a blast go off and the car stopped.

V: ye kya tha?

B: Kya? aah- Veeranshu?

V: kya hua Bani?

B: Mera Pet!

V: Bani?! shit...

He got out and tried to change his roop but his wings were finding it diffcult to handle the strong winds blowing against them. It would be harder to fly as a semi-human,carrying his pregnant wife.

B: Veeranshu! the baby...Its coming.

V: what?

He tried to calm himself and looked around. He saw a small hut in a diatance. He took Bani there and made her lie down on a cot. He looked around for things to help her.

After hours of pain, they both heard the most beautiful sound of their lives- their baby's first cry in their arms.

Veer cried as Bani gave it to him but the moment ended too soon as they noticed the gate of the hut seal shut!. 

B: (still weak as she gave birth to a very strong child, it took a lot of her energy) Veer!

Veer tried to open the door but to no avail. 

V: Ye khul nahi raha hai Bani!

B: Kya?

V: Haan!...

They both heard laughter. Voices spoke from behind the door.

Voice: Tum dono ne niyati ke sath ched chaad ki hai..

V: ye bolne wale tum kon ho...darwaza kholo..

another voice: tumhara milan hi galat tha

B: Usse khud bhagwan ne apna ashirwaad diya hai...tum ye bolne wale hote kon ho?

Another voice: tumhari maut

Laughter continued as the house began to burn.

B: Veer?

V: Bani!

They tried to change their roop but nothing happened.

A deep voice, different then the first ones spoke: Aaj adi naag ne bhi apna badla le liya...shakityan nahi toh badla hi sahi...aur shakityon se yaad aaya...is ghar ke aas pas mayavi ghera banaya gaya hai...kissi bhi icchadhari jeev ki shaktiyan yahan bekar hai...so don't even try. waise bhi ye ghar blast ho jayega....haha!

Veer and Bani looked at each with tears in their eyes. Veer tried to look for a way out but realized it futile. 

B: Humara baccha Veer!

V: Haan!...

Bani quickly wrapped their baby up in a cloth while Veer tied their phones in that cloth in hopes that their family would be able to track their baby. They kissed its forehead and tried to put it away through the window. The bars scratched its soft face.

B: Veer! (sobs)

V: Shh! ye chot zaruri hai isse bachane ke liye...

They somehow put it away and threw it tactfully so that it landed on a pile of leaves. 

Vani hugged each other with tears in their eyes. Their life danced before them and love poured out of their eyes. They cried at their fate.

B: Nahi! Hum is janam me saath hue, ek doosre se pyaar krte hai aur dono ye baat jaante hai, ye toh jeet hui na...

V: Humara baacha surakshit rahe

B: Vo jeeyega Veer, usse jeena hoga. aur vo farishte ne bhi to yahi kaha tha na..

Veer nodded and they hugged each other.

B: Toh tum sach me jaloge mere sath?

V: Rakh hone tk.

A blast went off that shook the ground, and just like that, a hut that stood ablaze, burnt down to ashes. Four nags stood- proud that they ended an evil entity but one of them looked specially smug as he had taken his malik's revenge. Unknown to them, a baby looked their way, hidden in the pile of leaves. Tears rolling down its face, scratches sealed themselves and the faces of the four foes got registered in its eyes- clear and forever!

This is how I feel they could have shown the finale as per the current track. It is open ended and leaves possibilities as well as brings the story into a full circle.

This version ends slightly tragic.
