Part 87
"Like I said, Luke's body is fragile and we won't know exactly when his heart would gave out again." The doctor explained watching as those faces crumpled into disappointment again.
"The thing with overdose cases we treat it as best as we could. He took dangerously high amount of dosage that does damaged to his kidney. I do believe it wasn't the first time either." He eyed them dangerously knowing how they left that part before in his history and it came back haunting them in their assess.
"We did our best to save him but at this point, his body is too weak and the next time his heart stopped, there might be no coming out of it."
A gasps escaped their lips followed by sobs of tears from the women. Pleads were mutters under their breaths hoping that Luke's life would be spared one last time. But they knew nothing would ever changed the fact that Luke's body seems to tell them that he wants nothing but giving up.
"Please. I beg of you. Do something. Do anything. I need my grandson to be alright. I promised our sons that we took care of him while they're gone." Oscar pleads and for the first time in his life, his words actually clung to the false hope. His arm still wrapped around Ellen's that clinging to his side in tears since earlier.
"I'm sorry sir, we tried our best but from now on, all we could do is wait for him to respond to treatment. Despite everything, it's all up to him." The doctor continues. "It has been days and we thought he would be fine by now. Why the sudden changed?" Phillip asks suddenly earning them all a curious look.
"Seems that he gave up." Bea whispered next to Phillip turning his head sharply at her. "Don't you dare say that." He warned her and she darted her look weakly at him before letting a sigh escaped her breath.
"He lost his parents. What do you expect Pip? What did Henry do when dad died?" She asks turning all heads at her. Phillip was rather appalled by the question that he was trying to avoid in years. But neither of them could deny the fact how Henry struggled in his early years after Arthur's passing.
"Luke's life is tragic since he inhaled his first breath into the world. If it wasn't for Henry nor Alex. I don't even think we would be standing here today all of us together." She signed looking around the room to see Ellen and Oscar staring back at her. They both had taken a seat over the chairs by the waiting area after the doctor had left them.
Their eyes are bright red and their cheeks are flushed with tears breaking her hearts in pieces. For Bea and Phillip, the only person they had lost is Henry and although Alex had made that impact in their lives, it wasn't as devastating as both Ellen and Oscar felt. They lived together, they've seen each other every other day and Oscar mostly due to his line of work with Alex and Henry both. Losing them had brought their world into shattering pieces and there is no one, literally no one would bring that pieces back together, except Luke.
"Luke need us more than anything right now. Henry and Alex would be heart broken to know that we left him all alone in the dark trying to survive this." She continues and saw how Phillip slowly leaning against the bench by the wall with Martha by his side.
"He needed to hear us so he could come back home. All of us." Bea suggests. Ellen upon hearing her suggestion lifted her head from Oscar's shoulders and wiped her tears hurriedly with the heels of her palm.
"You're right. He needed to hear us. All of us. We need to guide him back home." She says with a hopeful smile on her face. She gripped Bea's hand tightly in hers before pulling her into Luke's room.
.
Sorrow filled the room with nothing but tears and grim. It felt like they already lost him, it felt like he is already moving on and his soul is no longer in here with them leaving only his body for them mourned.
Ellen sat by Luke's side holding his hand in hers, tracing her fingers over his knuckles feeling the cotton bandage wrapped around his wrist softly grazed her palm. Her eyes wont stop tearing seeing him like this. Even though it wasn't the first time they saw him vulnerable and weak like this, this hurts more.
"Luke darling." Ellen called stroking her fingers softly against his skin. "Luke sweetheart, can you hear me?" Ellen calls again.
It was silence and the only thing that heard in the room was the beating of his heart through the machine. Slow and steady as if it was a ticking time bomb waiting to finally stop and exploded.
"Luke we're here for you darling. We're all here. Don't you dare leave me Luke. I have so much to say to you, so much to tell you about you father's. I need you to come back. I need you here with me so I could love you the way I love your fathers. Please darling. Please come home." Ellen pleads causing each and everyone in the room to shed tears with her.
.
Hours passed and left only Oscar in the room alone with Luke. Ellen fell asleep on the couch at the waiting area while the rest of them went back to the hotel. It was an exhausting day for them, for all of them. But Oscar won't give up. He needed to make sure someone stayed by Luke side despite his unconscious. He needed to Luke to know that he is there with him.
"You know when your Papi first met me, he hated me so much that he never wanted to see me ever. But it wasn't until he got a taste of my cooking only he starts warming up to me. Or so I thought." He laughs softly at the Thanksgiving memory of them and few broken plates that still haunts him.
"But I think after what happened to your dad at Stanford had brought us much closer and I get to see him grew from a boy into a man. I was so proud of him for sticking up for Henry until today. It wasn't just love that made him stayed, it was his heart that made him do the right thing."
"But still, being in this family means everything to me Luke. When your father's met you for the first time, they are broken in pieces waiting for someone to put them back together."
"Then there you are, more broken than them and for once after years, they forgot how sad they were on missing each other. They forgot how it felt to love someone so hard that it blinded you entirely. They rekindled everything in their past because of you and proves that love is truly indomitable."
"To have that kind of love and be loved, it's beautiful. I know it's wrong for me to think like this but I'm glad they are together now. I know for a fact that neither of them would survived on their own after losing one of the other. But I also know they won't let you go this easy Luke. I know they are not ready to have you with them just yet."
"I know for a fact that Alex wont let you give up this easy. Because he didn't. He wanted to give up after he lost Henry years ago but he held himself stronger because he knew if fate would be kinder, they would reunite him back with Henry and they did. They got their happily ever after, so I need you to find yours mijo. I need you to know what it's like to have someone love you with all their heart. Just like your father's."
Oscar runs his palm over his face to wipe his tears but more running slipping through the slit of his fingers and he cupped his lips muffling his cries. He leaned forward to give Luke a kiss over his temple before planting another on his knuckles.
"Come home Luke. We'll be waiting for you." He whispered stroking his blonde hair that fell on his forehead before he left.
Oscar stares at the wall for hours when his eyes caught a glimpse of Phillip walking past the waiting area and a soft smile breaks on his face. He lowered his gaze to Ellen asleep on his lap before he leaned himself back against the wall and shut his eyes for the night.
.
Phillip couldn't find himself to sleep so he break out from his hotel room leaving his whole family behind and headed back to the hospital. He wasn't sure why but he needed to see Luke, he needed to make sure that he isn't too late to say things that was supposed to say to him.
It was three in the morning when he arrived at the ICU and noticed Luke's room is empty. He might have missed Oscar and Ellen in the waiting area when he passed, he thought.
His heart thumping against his chest wall as he sat down next to Luke by his bed. He stared at the bandage wrapped neatly around his wrist before a certain memory hits him.
His lips quiver at the thought of that memory. He tried to shake it off and held his tears but he knew he wasn't strong enough to hold it in.
"You know how many times I have sat on this particular seat holding your dad's hand, praying, begging. How many tears, how many-" he paused when his breath caught his throat. He inhaled longly before he exhaled them and continued. "How many times I have counted in my head in each passing moments hoping that your dad would be alright."
"But I never thought that I would still lose him. I thought by being the eldest would give me the privilege not to witness any of my siblings death but I was wrong. I witnessed my own father, my own mother after she tried to kill your dad. Then I have to witness your dad - left me." Phillip's voice breaks still feel the words sounds untrue when it slipped his lips.
"I never told you this but I was angry at your dad for adopting you. I thought that it was nothing but a distraction in his health wise. But little did I know was, you are his strength, his motivation and his reason of breathing that made him go through each day in his life despite the doctor told him how littlest time he had."
"But for God sake Luke, please don't let me witnessed yours as well. I don't think I have it in me anymore to grief. I can't go through any of this anymore. So I need you to wake up. I need you to come back to us so I could see how proud of Henry at you. For surviving."
.
Hope walked through the hallway after she decides to leave the hotel room and stayed with Luke instead. She thought she might be alone when she found Oscar and Ellen sleeping in the waiting room. But the moment she opened the door, she was surprised by her uncle Phillip sitting by his side, startled by her presence in the room.
"What are you doing here?" He asks her.
"What are you doing here?" She repeats with a soft smile on her face. Her blonde hair are loose on her shoulder and each time she moves, it brushes her face softly and elegantly. She always does look as beautiful as her mother and there is no denying that.
"How is our Achilles?" She asks sitting herself down at the end of the bed next to Phillip. He scoffed before a smile broke when he remembered how Henry used to say how closed Luke looks like Achilles in the book. The only thing left was for him to find himself his Patroclus.
"Fighting." He whispered still held his hand over Luke's hand by his side and occasionally stroke his knuckles with his thumb.
"Do you mind if if I have a moment with him?" She asks and Phillip smiled shaking his head before he stood. "Of course darling. Take your time." He says planting a kiss on top of her head before he left.
The moment the door shut close, Hope take the warm seat next to Luke and held her palm under Luke's cold hands.
"Luke." She called stroking her thumb over his knuckles. "I hate you, you know that." She starts still had her eyes low on their tangled hands.
"I hate that you get to choose this path and succeeded."
"I hate that your grief is not shared with me when you should."
"I hate that I don't get to scold you for taking this decision on your own."
"But most of all I hate that I don't get to see uncle Henry anymore. I hate that life is never fair to him. He had everything he finally needed in life and then this happened. But honestly I think I was mad at myself more than I am with you. I have to live the fact that I don't get to see them anymore and I forgot how much it meant for you. I know how much it hurts you Luke. I know. I never blamed you for what you did."
"I hate that I don't get to hear his voice calling me asking me if I wanted anything if he happened to visit London."
"I don't get a chance to tell him I was accepted at the Julliard next summer. I know how much it meant for him after all the pep talks he gave me. I finally got in and I don't get a chance to tell him that." She breaks further in tears.
"I hate that I don't get to see him at my wedding, or be there after I give birth. I can't see his face when I tell him I will named my son after him. He was more of a father to me than anyone else. Even you know that."
"But I need you to be here Luke, for them. Don't leave me alone without their memories. You are the only one that proves their love exist."
"I hate how I don't get to hear his voice again, singing along at Christmas. Lulling the kids to sleep. I missed him so much." Hope broke in tears leaning herself on Luke's hand against her cheek.
"Do you remember the song Luke? How he used to sing it for us?" She asks him even though she knew he couldn't answer her.
"Stars shinin' bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper, 'I love you'
Birds singin' in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me."
"Say 'nighty-night' and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me."
.
The next day each of them sat there holding Luke's hand in smiles, praying, hoping he would find their voices helping him through the dark and find his way back to them. They wanted him to feel their love spreading through the room not in tears but happiness as they waited for him.
As the monitor beeps, their hope swell in their chest. They stood there telling stories to him as if he's awake and could hear them but they couldn't care less. They needed him to hear whatever they had to say and when he finally wakes up, he would know how much it meant to them for losing him.
"Do you remember when Henry and Alex fought over Hope? You were so young that time, oh gosh but they do love to fight on who gets to hold you." Bea laughs followed by the rest of them.
"Gosh don't remind me when Alex yelled at the old lady at the clinic." Ellen adds and they all laughed.
"Wait, what old lady?" Phillip asks unaware of the story.
"There's this old lady at the clinic when I brought Hope for a check up and she thought Henry is too young to be having a kid." Bea claimed remembering how upset Alex was at her and Henry had to practically pulled him away from charging at her.
"Like it's any of her business. What rights she has to tell people that?" Phillip protests and Martha had to calm him down by tapping on his lap. "Calm down darling, it's in the past." She says and they all break into another laugh.
They were interrupted by the sudden rapid beeping coming from Luke's heart monitor. His heart rate shows it was over 150 and it scares them when they see it went higher and higher. "Call the doctor now!" Phillip yelled and Nick literally sprinted out to get help.
"Luke?" Ellen reached his side holding his hand when she noticed his eyes flutters. "Luke, come back to us Luke. You're home, you're safe darling. Come back." She pleads holding his hand tight.
It was moment later when the rest of the staff barged in and pushed them all out from the room.
"LUKE! Hold on Luke. You hear me? I'm here, we're all here Luke."
"DON'T GIVE UP!" Ellen yelled as they pushed her out of the room with Oscar
