Part 82
Calm. Serenity. Peace. Most important of all, he was pain free.
It's all Henry could feel right now. The pain he bottled up for years had all gone. He was feeling light on his chest and his shoulder, the burden that he carries all the years of worrying, it's all gone.
But then he remembers.
He remembers what happened and the tightness in his chest came back. The furrow of his eyebrow returned but he knew he was still not awake for this. He could feel his eyes are still close and his body still laid on the ground. His palm could feel the familiar dirt and pebbles scratching underneath his fingers before he realized this isn't the place he last laid on before he closed his eyes.
His eyes shot up to see the ember sky above him and his heart tugs deeper into his stomach. He could feel the breeze of wind softly blowing on the side of his face and his hair flipped from his forehead to the side.
He exhaled longly feeling the heaviness of his chest pressing him deeper but he fought it off to raise himself into a sitting position from the ground. He grunted feeling his head heavy like he was just hit by something.
"Took you long enough." A voice startled him.
"Alex?" He turned to his side to see his husband in all his glory self hugging his knees sitting next to him with that widest dimple smile he yearned. He was wearing the white linen clothing with his pants folded right above his ankle.
"Hi baby." He says still keeping his eyes over the horizon basking on the warmth of the sun shining over him like a spotlight. The smile never leave his face.
That face. That beautiful handsome adonis Henry gets to claim all his glory alone.
"Alex?" Henry called his name again letting his tongue runs Alex's name thousand times over causing Alex's gaze turned towards him. His eyes squinted one eye with his lips curved on the side but soon his dimpled smile dropped when he realized how Henry is at verge of breaking next to him.
"Oh darling, how bad is it?" He asks with the same amount of guilt covers his face. Henry shook his head with his trembling lips before wrapping his arm around Alex's neck pulling him into his longing hug.
"It's bad Alex. It's really bad." Henry whisper shuddering on Alex's neck. He could feel Alex soft palm stroking over his back hushing him softly in his ear.
"I'm so sorry Hen." Alex whispered pulling Henry off from his embrace and Alex wiped his thumb over Henry's cheek. Henry leaned into his palm kissing the warmth skin that now soaked with his tears letting Alex rested his thumb over his thick lower lips.
"I'm so sorry." Alex repeats and Henry shook his head before a smile tug on the corner of his lips. "It doesn't matter now, we're together. Like always. Like- we planned too." Henry says in tears and Alex eyebrow frowned.
"M-My parents?" He asks softly and Henry couldn't help lowering his gaze in their intertwined hand. The ring on their fingers glowing under the rays of the sun. "Devastated." Henry whisper letting a tear dropped on his cheek.
"Luke?" He asks lifting Henry's chin to face him and saw how his lips trembled at the thought of their son. "I-" Henry paused after he realized what this place resembled in one of his dreams. He remembers it well. He was here before. When he died.
"Alex. Are we-?" Henry couldn't have a heart to continue his own word and Alex traced his thumb over Henry's chin. Their eyes finally met and Henry could see how Alex's eyes glistened with tears begging to fall.
"I don't know baby. I thought I did. Maybe we- did die. Or maybe we're just- waiting to wake up." Alex says and Henry sighed realizing how they are either dead or at the brink of it.
"Alex. What do we do?" Henry asks and Alex put on his brace facade pulling Henry into his chest letting them both laid on the ground with Henry resting his cheek over Alex's broad chest. They both exhaled simultaneously letting their warmth spread into each other. Their hand tangled over Alex's chest feeling the rise and falls of their breathing follows.
"Now love, we wait." Alex whispered softly planting his kisses over Henry's forehead. Henry sighed lifting his gaze towards Alex, his nose tip barely inches away from Alex's and he feels Alex softly leaned pressing his lips over Henry's.
"I love you for infinity husband." Alex whisper and a single tear fell from the corner of his eyes.
"I love you for infinity husband." Henry repeats sighing into the crook of Alex's neck letting his long arms wrapped him close before his eyes closed again.
.
"Alex?" Henry calls after a while, Henry could feel the vibrating hummed under his cheek from Alex before he pushed himself up and sat facing Alex. Alex folds his arm underneath his head with his legs crossed on top of each other.
"I know this place." Henry turned his head around to see the fields around them. He remembers this place exactly from the past.
"I remember seeing my parents here. Why can't I see them again?" Henry asks. Alex shrugs resting himself on his elbow but soon regretted when the ground pricking on his skin. "I dunno." His eyes lurked around them and noticed how Henry starts to lift himself up and walked away from him. He followed Henry after he noticed how Henry headed to the cliff nearby them.
"I don't get it." Henry says looking down at the edge with fear creeping inside of him before Alex pulls him by his elbow.
"What are you doing? You're gonna fall." Alex says concerned at him. Henry eyebrow furrowed at the thought, "It's not like we could get any deader love." He joked and noticed the worry in Alex's face clearly shown.
"Look I don't get it either but don't tempt fate." Alex says pulling Henry away from the edge and wrapped his arm around his waist.
"What is it? What are you afraid of?" Henry asks and noticed how Alex kept his gaze low on the ground beneath their feet.
"I don't think we are dead yet." Alex says earning Henry another furrowed look. "What are you talking about?" He asks concerned before tangling their fingers together.
"I think I can hear whispers, voices- I dunno. It sounded like prayers sometimes." Alex says turning on his heels with his hand running through his curly hair. Henry followed clueless after Alex walked away from him.
"What do you mean?" Henry asks catching up behind him but stops halfway when he could feel a stab of pain over his chest. He gasped clutching the shirt he wore with his fingers. His breath hitched causing Henry to lean forward grabbing his own knee to hold on to the pain.
"Hen?" Alex noticed how Henry's not beside him or close to him when he turned to see him fell behind with his hand clutched on his chest.
"Henry!" Alex yelled running back to him but before he could, Henry fell on his side right on the ground with a thud after his body hits.
.
"Listen here bastard!" A voice whispered in the air in the middle of the darkness.
"Don't leave yet. Please. We need you, all of you."
"Dad, please."
"Luke?" Henry whispered before slowly fluttering his eyes to wake.
"There he is." The sight of Alex smiling happily above him made Henry wonders alone in his thought.
"I thought I lost you again." Alex says and Henry was lifted from the ground to sit properly.
"Luke's alive." Henry states and Alex's eyes widen at his words. "Luke's alive?" He repeats and Henry smiled nodding softly at him. "I remembered. I remembered him and I can hear him." Henry softly lifted Alex's hand in his tightening his fingers over his trembling one, "Luke's alright. None of this is your fault darling." Alex eyes lowered to their tangled hand after Henry states the one word he had been circling in his mind ever since he woke up in this lonely field.
"Darling, it's going to be okay." Henry says cupping Alex's cheek letting his tears fell on Henry's palm. "Everything will be alright." Henry assured him.
"It's not Hen. I assure you. There is nothing okay about this. I got us in this situation. We both are here because of me!" Alex voice raised and Henry could feel pain coursed through his voice.
"Darling this is not your fault. The driver who hits us is. No one would expect this too happened." Henry says cupping both of Alex's cheek in his palm now. He pulled Alex crying face to look at Henry.
"This is not your fault, love. Whatever happens, it's not your fault." Henry whispers feeling Alex's breath fanning over his face at their closeness.
"I'm scared Hen." Alex whispers letting their forehead touched.
"I'm scared if I opened my eyes and you are not here with me anymore." Alex let out his fear feeling Henry's soft delicate fingers stroking his palm.
"I'm scared that you both actually survives and I'm not. I don't want to let you go just yet." Alex whispered causing Henry to pull back.
"What?" Henry asks with his eyebrow crooked.
"I'm scared." Alex continues. "I'm scared. What if I was the only one who didn't survived? I don't want to be left alone. I'm scared Hen. I'm not ready to die. I'm not ready to let go just yet." Alex shakes and trembles in Henry's touch as he watched Alex's shoulders shudders breaking in tears.
"Oh Alex." Henry pulled him closed to his chest before Alex wrapped his arm around Henry's waist letting him pulled Alex closer to straddled him. "Don't go Hen. Don't leave me here all alone." Alex continued tightening his arm around Henry like a toddler. Henry hushed softly stroking his palm over Alex's back whispered nothing but soft words in his ears.
.
"First and foremost, we are terribly sorry for what happened." The ER doctor came forth after hours of spending saving Henry's life. It was morning when they came out from the room to tell both Ellen and Oscar what happened to Henry exactly.
"Mr Fox seems had lied to every medical personnel about his wellbeing and all of us thought he was being checked at. Turns out he doesn't." The doctor continued. Ellen could feel the tightening grip over Oscar's fingers clutching her palm after they heard the doctor.
"He suffered a major internal bleeding from inside his abdomen and from the record I pulled, he was under treatment of anticoagulant drug for his heart which explained why he bleeds continuously. We also have contacted Mr Fox's Cardiologist and she is inside with him right now as we speak."
"We are deeply sorry at our negligence from our part and we understood that if you wanted to settle this legally, you both have every right to." One of the lady wearing a pantsuit with her knee high skirt that came together with the doctor explaining to them about Henry's situation.
"I won't." Oscar adds, turning Ellen's head sharply surprised by his words.
"Whatever you guys have to do, just do it. Save my boys. Bring them back to us." Oscar trembled in his own words and his eyes betrayed him when he finally let those tears falls on his wrinkled cheek.
But they could see how Oscar's requests seems like he pointing a knife on their necks and the way they exchanged glances at each other made them even more curious on the situation. "What?" Ellen beats him by asking first. They pulled a breath before the doctor continued.
"Mr Fox's condition is complicated. His heart is failing, and he needs surgery but his body won't survived the operation. We would lose him on the table if we continued for surgery. From this point, I don't think he would survived the next 24 hours and you might need to start calling his other family members."
Oscar could feel the grip over his palm tightened by the bad news. He couldn't bear to shifts his glances this wife next to him. He could almost feel the tears running down her beautiful face has finally breaks the tough exterior she held over the years.
"Nothing about this is good news for us. How will we ever tell our son that his husband is dead when he woke up?" Ellen questioned and the doctor run his tongue over his lower lips.
"Sir, madam, we will do our best to save them both but I think at this point, only prayers and miracles would helped them both." The doctor continued and Oscar turned his gaze sharply at him. "You obviously underestimated the power of a prayer son. Believe me when I say we both had prayed enough for our sons and God forbid that if today is the day they took him away from us, our prayer would never escape our lips."
Oscar stood abruptly pulling Ellen with him, "Stop telling us what can't be done and start figuring out a way to save them both. Don't waste our time by telling us the odds. Fuck those odds." Oscar says sternly grabbing Ellen's hand in his pulling them towards Henry's room.
.
"Dr Sylvie." Ellen voice breaks behind her as she watches her doing Echo on Henry's chest. There were tubes all over him and somehow the image of Henry on that bed with tube coming out of his mouth feels rather familiar. That specific tight knot feeling in their stomach grew just like the last time they saw him in this condition.
"Hey guys. We're back at this huh?" She says not tearing her eyes away from the monitor as her hand guided the wand all over Henry's chest.
"How is he?" Oscar asks as Ellen stood next to Henry stroking his blonde hair from his forehead. It was surprising to see how Henry barely had any scratches on him but on the inside it was all a mess.
"Not good. I hate to say this but we might need transplant soon." She says cleaning off the residue of the gel with the paper towel. She sighed turning the monitor off before she stood facing them again.
"I'm sorry to say this but he didn't have that much time. They need to push the surgery to fix him internally and I doubt we can find a heart this fast either." Sylvie rubs her palm together after taken some amount of hand sanitizer by the wall after she removes her glove. She stares at both Oscar and Ellen standing by Henry side wondering how the night had turned such a way.
Ellen and Oscar both shifted their glances at each other once again before she broke in tears still had her hands over Henry's palm.
"We need to call Phillip and Bea. They need to be here in case-" Ellen paused choking on her own tears. Oscar stroke her back softly nodding at her ideas before he pulls out his phone and taps on Phillip's number. It took him few rings before he answered and Oscar cursed after he heard his sleepy voices from the speaker.
"Oscar?" Phillip asks shuffling on the other side and Oscar took a deep breath before he spoke. "Phillip, something happened."
.
"It doesn't hurt anymore." Henry whispered in Alex's embrace, pressing his lips closer to his neck. His hot breaths fanning over Alex's pulsating veins and his scent invaded Henry's nostril like a dream.
"What is hun?" He asks, "The pain's gone." Henry whispered.
"I'm glad." Alex whispered, pulling Henry closer into his side and he couldn't help noticed how Alex's heart thumping quicker than seconds ago.
"Is it always gonna be like this?" He asks and Alex sighed another deep breaths.
"I don't know love. I don't know. But I never wanted this to end." He whispered again, pressing his lips over Henry's forehead.
"Me too." He says closing his eyes before he wrapped his arm tighter around Alex's waist.
.
Phillip and Bea grabbed their children as hurry as they can be the moment he received the call from Oscar.
"There was an accident."
Oscar voice haunts him like a broken records, repeating it inside his mind and he couldn't shake it off from hearing it over and over again. He tried but the only thing he could hear was that and he refused to wait any longer.
Oscar briefed him vaguely about what happened, that Luke is still under observation and Alex just out of surgery but they couldn't tell them the prognosis just yet. They both still not out of the woods and worst, Henry needs a transplant.
Soon as the pilot signed the seatbelt off, Phillip grabbed his phone and start making calls. He felt Martha reassuring palm on his thigh every now and then before his eyes landed on his sister sitting on the opposite of his with their kids on the other side, sleeping.
"Lance, I need your help. It's Henry, my brother. He's at Bellevue, New York and I need your team on standby. He needs that transplant- urgent." He spoke so eloquently almost as if it was his one of business call only that he needed to hide his own tears from speaking to this person.
"Short notice and I'm sure I'll figure something out. A heart is a crucial vital organ and procuring it- is complicated." Lance, the other guy reply and Phillip sighed rubbing on his temple.
"Please Lance, it's my brother. We've talked about this. This is why you are hired." He begged and it triggers something in Bea when she leaned closer eyeing her brother still had that phone pressed on his ear. She frowned letting him sorted the conversation and soon when Phillip ended the call, she burst in questions.
"What the hell was that?" She asks gripping on the console with her perfectly manicure baby pink polished nails shooting dark gaze at her brother.
"You think after the doctor told us about Henry needing surgery in the future I would just forget and wait for the day to come?" He asks tapping on his phone and Martha had a curved smile on her face.
"We set up a transplant team for Henry after Sylvie told us. I guess it's time for us to finally put them to work." She says wrapping her fingers between Phillip's on the console. He smiled his half smiled at her although his eyebrow still had that frown of worry flashes over him.
"Do I have to worry?" Bea asks and Phillip turns his gaze back at her, "Not for now little sis. Not at the moment. The only thing you should worry right now is Henry need to stay alive for this. Otherwise, all our effort will go to waste." He says sighing as he leaned against the headrest.
"What do you mean?" She asks crossing her legs on top of each other with her hands clasped over her lap.
"There is no point of transplant if Henry's body gave up. We only had six hours after they had procured the organ otherwise, it will be damaged." He said briefly knowing how worried his sister is at the moment but so does he. He tried his best not to show it and in hope by the time he reached New York, Henry is still alive and fight like he always did.
.
"Darling." Ellen shot up her head startled by Oscar's hand palming her shoulder when she saw the cup he handed to her. She sighed thanking him for the cup of coffee from the cafeteria that they had accustomed to the taste after all the years they had been waiting and drown in those cups.
They were both sitting by the hallway on one of the visitor chairs after being told about Henry's news and waiting for them to transfer him to Alex's room as per Phillip requests. Even though he hadn't landed yet, he already making plans on both of their care and ensure both of them received the best medical attention they needed.
"I can't face Luke." Ellen whispered softly after sitting silently with Oscar next to her. Their eyes stares deeply right across them against the plain wall watching as the people and the staff passed by each minute.
"I know darling. I'm dreading that either but we have to face him somehow. He's worried and for sure he has a lot of questions." Oscar adds and Ellen sniffed her tears feeling her eyes swollen enough for Luke to question her. She stood up and walked side by side with Oscar by her hips still clutching on their coffee cups headed towards Luke's room.
Ellen stopped in her track just few doors away from Luke's room pulling Oscar from walking further. "Elle?" he asks and he could see his wife had that deep stares in her eyes that filled with fear and worry. "Tell me they will be alright." she whispered softly but their distance is barely an inch for Oscar not to hear her. He sighed stepping closer with a forced smile on his face with their hand still tangled, "God's willing." He mutters.
They were interrupted by a sound of crashing glasses by the end of the hall when both of them stood and dreaded it was either coming from other patient's room or Luke's.
They stood and ran along the hallway noticed how the sound became louder and more screams coming out from the end room before they realized it was Luke's voice. "GET OUT!" He screamed again and Oscar was leading Ellen by her hand before barging into the room.
"Luke, calm down mijo." Oscar says after he saw Luke standing by the edge of the bed holding on to the IV pole with his hand like a weapon flinging to anyone that comes near him. His bandaged around his head is no longer wrapped and it was on the floor by his feet.
"NO! Take me to my dad right now! I wanna see my dad!" He yells and Ellen couldn't hold her tears from falling at the sight of Luke.
"Luke sweetie, we will but first you have to calm down." Ellen told him raising both of her palm up and the staffs are crowding him waiting to charge but Oscar gave them a signal not to as they can handle their own grandson.
"No Gams! You don't understand. Dad's hurt. He lied to all of you." He says and the moment he did, Ellen and Oscar had that wide look on their faces.
"What do you mean?" He asks even though he know what he meant. But he didn't know how Luke able to find out about Henry.
"I remember being in the car after the accident. Dad was thrown out. The scratches was not from inside the car but he was thrown out on the road. He needs help. Gams! You have to believe me!" Luke yells threatening anyone that dares to come at him with the syringes.
"Luke, I know- fuck! We know." Oscar says and Luke eyes softened by his words. Tears began to fill more in his eyes as he lowered the pole to the ground and it clanged upon contact.
"Is he?" His lips trembled to even say the word and Oscar could see him swaying before his knees gave out and Luke fell on the floor. Oscar caught him just in time in his embrace letting Luke wailed in tears hugging Oscar close to him.
"The doctors are with him darling. They will do everything they can to save them both. Your uncle Phillip is already on his way with your aunt Bea." Oscar stroked his hair back softly letting Luke sobs on his shoulder.
"Please. Please be alright." Luke whispered resting his head on Oscar's shoulder before Ellen crouched beside him and stroked his cheek in tears. "God will not abandoned those who in need love. Keep praying." She whispered with her lips trembled in tears and Luke could only nod in tears hugging Oscar closer.
.
Hours ticked by while waiting, listening to the doctors telling them the if's and when on both cases. Luke was finally wheeled into his parents room with both Alex and Henry laid in bed side by side with monitors. He broke in tears after he sees Henry in tubes and Alex as well.
June and Nora joined them after they both arrived at the same time and waited in the room listening to their heart monitor beeping steadily. Phillip texted Oscar they will arrived soon after he landed at the private terminal.
The room was filled with silence and sniffles coming from most of them. Luke stayed by Henry side occasionally went to Alex's holding his palm in his stroking his bloodied knuckles with his finger. He could feel his headache growing but he refused to leave his parent alone.
"Paps, I don't supposed I'm grounded anymore isn't it?" He smiled in his tears staring at Alex's calm face and ignored the people in the room while he talked to his father. "I just need you both to come back to me. Don't leave me please. I need you. I need you both in my life and I haven't even make you proud yet."
Luke wiped his tears with his fingers before he leaned his head on Alex's palm. It was odd when Alex's usual palm is warm and now is ice cold under Luke's touch. He hated to see him like this, especially he hated how he can't hear any of their voices talking back to Luke.
"Darling." Ellen approached him from behind resting her palm over his stressed shoulder and he relaxed the moment she touched him. "Let's get you rested." She says but Luke shrugged her off and remained seated. "No. I'm staying until they wake up." He says angrily and Ellen sighed defeated by his stubbornness.
