Part 67
Henry watched as his and Alex family gathered around in his room after he was moved to a different unit. He was clear from having to stay in ICU and he was transferred to the normal ward and he couldn't be any more relief. It wasn't just because he doesn't need to be attached to the cardiac monitors anymore but also it was only one floor down from Luke's ward which is a lot closer than the ICU. But most of all, none of them knew that they are both engaged and they had been hiding it from all of them since they wanted to tell all at once.
Henry smiled when Hope climbed on his bed wanting to stay by his side after so long they hadn't spend time together. Alex pouts at him when he sees Hope taking her place right underneath Henry's arm snuggling comfortably underneath the thick blanket that Bea brought for him.
"Uncle Henry." She calls and Henry hummed turning his gaze down at her. "Yes darling." He asks playing with her fingers. "Is everyday gonna be like this?" She asks and Henry took a deep breath before he answered her. "Sometimes. But you know that you had to go back home soon right?" He told her. She hummed in silence playing with Henry's fingers tangling in hers. "Why can't I stay with you and Alex?" She asks him cutely and he smiled.
"Because then mummy will get upset. She will miss you." Henry could see she lifted her gaze at her mother talking to Ellen and Oscar before she broke into a laugh. "Mummy can move here, she's happier here." She suggest and Henry smiles. "What about Sarah? You're her friend. You two are inseparable." Henry asks and Hope sighed staring at Sarah sitting on her father's lap smiling happily when he fed her the cookies Ellen made.
"She has her parents. I don't even have a dad." Hope whispered softly thinking Henry might not hear her. "Hope, listen to me." Henry turned her to face him and she had her gaze low on her lap before Henry tilted her chin to face him.
"Your father is here, right here. Just like my father, your grandfather was in mine." Henry pointed at her chest and she looked up from Henry's finger towards his hazel eyes. "They're never gone sweetie, we will keep their memory alive as we all lived." Henry can see the glistening tears over Hope's eyes as she stares at Henry's face. She smiled when Henry cupped her cheek and gave her a kiss over her forehead before she wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Babe." Alex called after he came out from the bathroom wiping his hand with the paper towels before tossing it in the trash can and sat besides Henry over the bed, "Should we now?" He asks pressing his lips over Henry's temple and he smiled. "I don't see why." He replied with a soft smile on his face.
"Guys! Can we all have your attention please?" Alex starts wrapping his arms over Henry's shoulder hugging both Henry and Hope in a side hug.
They all looked up to see them all three over the bed waiting patiently for Alex to continue. Alex smiled bringing Henry's hidden left hand underneath the blanket and placed the ring he had hidden in his pocket back into Henry's finger with a sheepish smile.
"Henry and I are getting married." He was expected to have the whole room cheered and jumping in excitement but instead, the only excitement they've got is by the little innocent girls that understood marriage by people kissing each other in a ceremony.
"Alex do you mind leave us. I need to speak with my brother." Phillip asks as he stood placing his daughter down on the floor next to her mother. Both Henry and Alex turned their gaze towards each other confused at Phillip sudden coldness. "Anything you want to say Pip you can say to both of us. There's no need to separate us in different room, we're not children." Henry says and he could see him sighed desperately.
"Alex, we need to talk." Ellen stood with her cold stern face and it made both Alex and Henry even more confused at their behavior.
"Mar, can you take the girls downstairs. I'll see you then." Phillip told his wife and she obeyed knowing even though she's family, she had no say in this. She took Sarah's hand in her before holding for Hope and she climbs down from the bed following her out from the room.
"Alex." Ellen held the door opened for him to join her and Oscar but he denies her. "No. I'm not a kid mum, just tell me what you all had in your mind-" Alex was cut off when Ellen yells. "Alexander Gabriel Claremont-Diaz! I am not in the mood for banter, WE need to talk! So either get out or I'll pulled you out by your ear, your choice!" Alex was taken back by his mother's tone and for years he never heard her spoke with that tone.
"Jeez, what's with you people." Alex cursed before he rolled his eyes at her.
"Be right back." He kissed Henry over his lips briefly before he follows Ellen out and shuts the door behind.
Henry turned his gaze back to his brother right ahead of him with his sister stood in silence with guilt ridden all over her face. "Talk." Henry says.
.
"What the hell was that?" Alex asks angrily at his mother after she pulled him by his arm towards one of the empty room by the end of hallway. Obviously she didn't want people to hear their conversation but he didn't exactly knows why she's behaving this way towards him.
"What?" Alex asks as soon as the door closed and he watched how Oscar and his mum stood next to each other with his arm crossed over his chest. "It's about Henry." Ellen starts earning him another confused look. "What about him?" Alex saw the hesitant look on Ellen face when she turned to look at Oscar.
"Mijo, maybe we should sit down." He gestured him to sit over the single chair in the room but Alex pushed his hand away.
"No. You both wanna talk, let's talk." Alex told them crossing his arm over his chest.
"When Henry had the surgery, they didn't know whether or not he's gonna survives. Later, Dr Sylvie told us that Henry might-" Ellen paused unable to continue her word looking at Alex's face. "That he might what?" Alex asks.
"That his heart is not strong enough and one day he might need a transplant or worst." Oscar helped clearing the tension but he didn't expected to see Alex smirking with a weird grin on his face. "Is that it? So- what?" He asks curiously.
"SO! How can you get married to a man that has no future? I know you love him but losing Henry will only drowned you back into the hole that you just crawled back up! Do you even remember how badly you fall when Henry left? Need I remind you that none of us would want that memory back!" Ellen yelled at him.
"You don't get it mum. My love for Henry is not just us being together. I know he might not have a future with me where we grow old in grey and watched our kids grew together but I would gave up everything to have whatever time I had left with him. I don't care what you guys think. I want him."
"Well you can't have him!" Ellen yells back. She sighed sharply before cupping his cheek making Alex turned to face her again.
"Alex. Your break up is already hard enough for us to watch and losing Henry, it wasn't just a breakup anymore. It'll kill you. You were torn apart when you had that dream of losing him. I won't be able to save you then, it's inevitable. His death is inevitable." Ellen could feel Alex's gaze softened at her words before lowering her hands down from his face. "I know." He whispered earning Ellen a confused gaze.
"I know mum. We've talked about it. But I was never this sure in my entire life. I love him and he loves me. Plus both of you are the one who pushes me to marry him. Why the change of mind?" He asks.
"We just wanted to spare you from your heartache son. We don't want to see you get hurt." Oscar adds turning Alex gaze towards him in anger.
"And you think separating us would do me any good? Clearly you forgot what happened ten years ago." Alex spat earning Oscar a sigh. "I didn't! I just don't want you to get hurt Alex." Oscar could see the rage fuming inside Alex when he pushes on and Alex burst like a pop balloon.
"You don't get to decide on anything! You are not my dad and I am not a child!" Alex blurted but before he could realized what he's just said to him, a sting slap hits him over his cheek turning his face to the side with a burning heat radiates on his skin.
He looked up to his mum staring at him apologetically but also angrily with tears in her eyes. "Don't be like your father! Oscar has been there for you more than your own father ever care. Blood doesn't makes it family! You should know that by now!" Ellen spat through her seething teeth and noticed how Alex had tears in his eyes when she says so.
Alex was at verge of breaking but he was too angry to say anything else. He's afraid that he might say something else he might regret. So instead of doing the right thing which is to apologize to Oscar for breaking his heart, he split. He rushed out from the room as fast as he could with his long legs guiding him to the only place he could think off right now.
.
"What are you guys plotting on?" Henry asks watching as his siblings by the end of his bed still standing firm with their eyebrows furrowed and worried faces plastered all over them.
"Henry you might wanna reconsider on marrying him. I was thinking on bringing you back home to recover before we talked about the future." Phillip starts and noticed the sighed from Henry.
"Pip, here or London doesn't make any difference. I'll be fine. Plus it's my future, not yours." Henry says sternly.
"But you won't be alright!" Phillip yells startling Henry from the bed. Phillip regretted his tone startled his brother especially when Bea gripped his elbow by her side to stop him from bursting more at him.
Phillip circled the bed taking his seat close over Henry's side and watched Bea joined him on the other side surprisingly quiet about this whole ordeal.
"Every time I turned my back, here you are. How many times did we have this conversation Hen? How many times do I need to see you suffers before I finally lost you? I need you home, safe and sound. No excuses." Phillip says and Henry could sense sadness in his voice knowing how much this hurts him too more than Henry.
Henry groaned in frustration straining his neck back before he turned his head back to him. "You are not keeping me in the tower forever Pip. I need to be free and enjoy my life however short my time I had left! It's time!" Henry argues but Phillip shook his head. "No."
"Pip! It's time!" Henry repeats before he reached for his brother's hand and pulls it over his lap that hides underneath the thick blanket. Phillip stares at Henry's gesture with a furrowed eyebrow before their gaze locked into each other again.
"How many years?" Henry asks and Phillip was confused by his sudden questions. "What?"
"How many years Pip?" He asks again softly finally sees the sudden realization when it hits Phillip. His eyes glistened pooling in more tears with his lips trembled but he pressed them together before he answered him.
"More than thirty years Hen." He answered and Henry smiled before he reached out his palm for his sister. Bea took his palm with tears glistened in her eyes as well and they all had their hands in each other's.
"That's right, more than thirty years you had been taking care of me Pip. You were there when father died. You were there sending me to school, took care of me when I was sick. You helped me with everything in my life. Hell you're even there when mother died. So it's time." Henry looked deeply into Phillip's eyes that now reddened with tears.
"You're my brother Hen, of course I took care of you. Both of you." Phillip turned to his sister by their side. "I never needed you to do anything. I just need you to be alright Hen. That's all." He says and Henry smiled nodding at him.
"I know. I could never thanked you enough Pip but it's time. Alright? It's time to let me go. You need to let me go Pip. I'll be alright. You did a great job raising us. Now focus on expanding your family so I can spoiled my niece or nephews." They all laughed at Henry's word before Phillip nods and pulled Henry by his neck to hug him.
"I love you bastard!" He says patting him on his back and Henry laughs but his gaze caught at Bea cries next to him while she watched them both hugging each other. "Oh my boys." She says before wrapping her arms around Henry and Phillip's body into a trio hug.
"I'm gonna kick Alex's ass if so much as anything happened to you. You know that right?" He threatened earning Henry a soft chuckled. "Don't you dare hurt my fiancé." Phillip laughs shaking his head at him.
.
Alex could feel his heart racing when reached to the one place he needed to calm down. Luke's heart monitor beeped steadily with the dialysis machine whirling next to him. A bag of milky white substances hanged by the side to provides Luke with enough nutrient for his body while he's still under the coma.
"Hey Luke." He whispered grabbing Luke's hand in his feeling the warmth radiates through Luke's cold skin. "How are ya buddy? Still sleeping my little prince?" He asks with a shaky smile unsure how he should talk to him.
"I did something bad today. I never meant it but it just came out of me. I was so angry at everyone who thinks they can tell me what to do. You would have understand that better than anyone." He continued.
"But I never meant to hurt my paps. I swear, I never meant to hurt him. I wished I could take it back. But I hurt him and now I feel like I'm the worst person in the world Luke. I don't know what to do." Alex says through the tears sliding down on his face.
"Well for starter you can say sorry to me." Oscar voice came softly behind him turning Alex's body around. He stood from the chair abruptly facing Oscar by the door alone without his mother next to him.
"Your mother need to cool off. I told her to get some ice cream with the girls." He says with a smile on his face and Alex was not wasting anymore time when he rushed to Oscar wrapping his arm around his neck.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so so fucking sorry. I didn't mean to say that to you. I'm so sorry." Alex mutters over and over his apologies wrapping his arm tighter around his small built. "I know mijo. I know." He pats his back pushing him back from their hugs and wiped his thumb over Alex's cheek clearing the tears away.
"Mum was right. You were a better father to me than my own. You were there for me through it all. You never did once tell people that I was your stepson but instead, you told people that I was your son. I should be more grateful than that." Alex continues on his apologies and Oscar nods cupping his cheek.
"I know mijo because I am proud of you to be my son. But I'm not here to talk about that." Oscar told him pulling Alex towards the couch in Luke's room. "I know you think me and Henry shouldn't be together but-"
"I never said that." Oscar cuts him off.
"I never said that you and Henry shouldn't be together. I know how it felt dating someone who had a timeline. You forgot I had a wife died of cancer?" He starts and Alex sighed leaning himself over the couch to hear his story.
"I never tell people this but I knew she was sick before we even get married. But it didn't stop me from loving her. It didn't stop me from proposing to her. I never felt so sure to marry her even though she was fighting me to marry another girl instead. She pushed me away thinking I would listen but I was back there each time everyday until the day she passed."
"You wore her down." Alex smiles and he nods his half smile, "She was the love of my life and I will never forget her. Funny thing is, your mother is the one who helped me go through my grief. We were in a support group together for losing a partner. She was dealing with her divorce and your father- sorry to say this was such an asshole to her."
Alex chuckled remembering sending her mother to the exact support group unaware that she met him there.
"We were apart for a while after I took a job in LA then somehow we find our way back to each other. Just like you and Henry did." He says turning his gaze back to Alex next to him. Alex had his gaze lowered over his palm pricking on the old scar on his skin.
"I love him. I can't let myself drowned on thinking about losing him each seconds in our life. I need to let Henry sees that I can do this. I can be happy even after he-" Alex stopped himself pressing his trembling lips together letting another tears sliding down his face.
Oscar pulls him by his shoulder and Alex rested his head over his lap by the couch still shuddering in his sobs. "It'll be alright. Future is never sets in stones. We don't know what could happened." Alex found solace feeling Oscar's finger brushes through his curls and somehow it made him drifted to sleep listening to Luke's heart monitor beeping in his dreams.
.
"Baby." Henry soft voice woke Alex up from his dreams with his soft hands brushes through his chiseled jaw line. He jolted from the couch watching as Henry stares at him with worried look on his face. The room was dim and Oscar is not there anymore with him.
"What is it? Are you alright?" He asks cupping Henry's cheek and he sighed with a soft smile. "I'm fine but maybe you should go home and rest. you're exhausted." Henry says but Alex shook his head reluctantly at his words.
"Nope, I'm staying." He says and Henry sighed desperately at him.
"Babe I know you're tired. The bed barely could fit us both and you always ended up sleeping on the couch middle of the night. I know your back is aching up by now so please, go home and sleep." Henry tries to reason with him but Alex shook his head sitting up on the couch facing him.
"You're my home Henry. There is no bed comfortable enough for me to sleep without having you by my side." He says cupping Henry's cheek before he leaned to kiss him on his lips. Henry didn't say anything else but rather blushed by Alex's word. Alex pulled Henry letting him rested his head over Alex's shoulder and they both sighed tiredly.
"Are they all left?" Alex pressing his lips over Henry's soft blonde curls and he hummed. "It's late, they had to leave." Henry replies wrapping his arms around Alex's waist as they both faced Luke by the bed.
"Did Phillip give you the shit talk about us getting married too?" Alex asks rubbing his palm over Henry's arm. "He told me he will kick your ass if anything happened to me." Alex snorted at the idea of Phillip kicking his ass or anyone else. To him Phillip always exudes charisma but also soft manner rather than Henry where his masculine is more showing than him.
"I like to see him try. Or we both might ended up like cats fighting on the streets, scratching each other's eyes out." Henry chuckled at the idea of his future husband and his brother at the street flicking their wrist at each other fighting for him.
They were both interrupted by the sudden jerk movement coming from Luke's body. Henry was still wrapped around Alex's embrace when he noticed and he jumps with a gasp. "Did you see that?" Henry asks stepping closer to Luke side holding his small hand in his. "Luke?" He called.
Alex joined him from behind Henry watching as Luke flinched again and Henry gasped. "Luke." Alex called holding Henry next to him as hope began to brighten his face. "Luke can you hear me? Squeeze my hand if you can." Henry asks holding his palm and it took him a while before he could feel the soft gripped over his palm.
"Alex, he's waking up. He's gonna be alright." Henry says with tears in his eyes before he turned his gaze back to Luke over the bed. "I'm gonna get help." Alex says running out from the room to call the nurse for Luke.
"Hold on Luke. I'm right here alright darling. I'm right here. Can you hear me. Hold on Luke." Henry words repeats in hope Luke could feel his presence in the room.
.
Alex and Henry waited outside of Luke's room for almost an hour since Alex called the nurses to help checking on Luke and each depressing minute leaves Henry in a nerve wrecking anxiety. "Calm down love. You just got better, you wanna go back to the ICU?" Alex says palming Henry on his shaky hands.
"You calm down." He spat back pointing at Alex's bouncing knees on the floor and they both laughs at each other nervous tick. "He's alright, he has too be. He's going to be fine." Alex pulls Henry by his shoulder before he leaned towards Alex's shoulder with a sigh. "I hope so." He mutters.
The door barged opened to reveal the staffs came out with a doctor in her colorful scrubs and a stethoscope hanging by her neck with a koala hugging the neck of the stethoscope by her shoulder. "I assumed you're the closest thing he has for a family?" She starts and both Henry and Alex already stood waiting for her.
"Kind of like legal guardian, legal lawyers guardian?" Alex mumbles still unable to comprehend their relationship with Luke.
"How is he?" Henry asks cutting Alex confusion short and saw how she smiled at them. "I'm actually surprised that he got through it. The chemicals that was injected inside of him was actually lithium." She starts earning Henry and Alex a gasped holding each other's palm together for comfort.
"But unfortunately the amount was too much and it shuts down his whole entire system. I guess the dialysis worked for him and he starts showing signs of recovery. The only thing is that we need to put more weight on him to speed up the process of recovery." She says and both Henry and Alex smiles in relief before they laughed at each other.
"Don't worry about that, house of Diaz never disappoints in putting weight on any of us." Henry laughs at Alex proudly telling the doctor about Oscar's cooking. "Can we see him?" Henry asks and the doctor nods. "Why not." She held the door opened revealing the same beeping sound from the monitor only now Luke is propped in bed with an oxygen tube curling under his nose taped to his cheek.
The moment he heard the door opened, he turned his gaze to the side and as he saw Henry and Alex walked in, he burst into tears. "Luke it's okay. It's alright sweetie. Shh it's okay." Henry wrapped himself around Luke to comfort him as he cried in his neck. Henry hushed softly rubbing circles on his back feeling his small frail body shudders in tears. "It's alright Luke, you're safe, you hear me?" Henry whispered in his ear softly before he feels him pulls back.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Luke repeats looking back and forth between Alex and Henry. "What are you talking about Luke, it's not your fault sweetie." Henry cupped his cheek and saw tears cascading down his cheek.
"I thought he love me. He was lying. He lied to me. He told me no one will ever love me. I was stupid to believe him." Luke mutters earning Henry and Alex a sigh of relief. "No Luke. He's the stupid one. He's the adult, you're the child. He was suppose to look after you, not fool you into this. I wish I could kill that bastard myself!" Alex mumbles from besides Henry earning him a nudge on his chest by Henry's elbow.
He turned his gaze at Henry before he noticed Luke's face dropped with more tears, "He's - dead?" He asks and Henry sighed cupping Luke's cheek in his palm. "Luke he killed himself after he tried to kill you. He deserves it, I know you both had history but he shouldn't do that to you." Henry says and saw Luke is pulling himself from Henry's grip.
"He was hurting. He told me we would be together. I should have died with him." Luke starts muttering before leaning himself back in the bed. "I should have died with him." He repeats under his breath making Henry hearts shattered in pieces.
"Luke listen to me. You're alive, you're gonna be alright. I promise you okay? Trust me." Henry says placing his palm over Luke's hand but he pulled away from Henry's grip. "Leave please. I want to be alone." He says but Henry pulls his hand back. "I SAID LEAVE!" Luke yelled at Henry's face causing him to fall back from his tone and Alex had to pull Henry away from the room.
"Come on babe. Let's get you back to bed." Alex says pulling Henry away from him as Henry stares at Luke by the bed facing to his side. "Luke I'm really sorry. I wished I could make it better. I really am." Henry mutters but Luke didn't even bother to turn to look at him except turning further on his side letting his back faces Henry by the door instead.
.
Henry silence really worries Alex on their way back into his room and the moment Henry hit the bed, he wrapped the blanket over himself curling over to his side like a cocoon. "Hen, he'll come around. I'm sure once he realized that one day. When the times come, we'll be here for him." Alex tries to coax Henry but he only stares at the blank space before him in silence.
Alex sighed when Henry didn't reply and instead he climbed over the bed wrapping his arm over Henry's body pulling him closer to his chest. "He's awake. That is all matters." He whispered into Henry's ear and Henry nods before turning himself to snuggle further into Alex's neck.
