Part 48
"The wound looks good Mr Fox." The doctor said after revealing Henry's dressing and starts cleaning his wound. It was two weeks after his discharged from the ward and after a month he was hospitalized and this is Henry's first appointment since he got home.
He took a deep breath inhaling sharply when the cold saline touches his skins and later he winced when they sprayed some skin barrier over his wound and left it bare open before they told him to put back his clothes on.
"Aren't you gonna close it?" He asks and the doctor shook his head, "Nope. The wound is dry enough, the suture is gone, there is no reason for us to cover it anymore." He says and Henry was instructed to put back his shirt and he could feel the drop in his stomach.
The thought of leaving the wound exposed for people to see made him reluctant to leave the room but his appointment is over and he wants to go home. Phillip and Alex is waiting outside of the room for him and he insisted for them to stay outside while he's being examined.
The truth is, he didn't want Alex to see him with such a big scar over his chest and the thought of him staring at it made Henry felt a thousand times smaller and each time he thought about it, he would get another panic attack. The doctor warned him about getting a panic attack would worsen his situation by putting more pressure on his aorta and he tried not having one. But it was basically his daily problem having to dealt with his attacks only this time, it would really kill him.
He took a deep breaths before he zipped his hoodie up until his neck and he wished he could cover more. He could feel his hand starts clammy and his breaths shortened. "Get it together Hen." He whispers to himself and starts doing his breathing exercise to calm his nerves down.
Henry stayed unaware how much time he did when a soft knock startled him from his thought, "Hen, you alright?" Alex soft voice heard peaked the door and he immediately stood up, "Y-Yeah. I'm done." He says before he walked out from the examination room. Alex stared at his face before lowering his gaze down to his fully covered hoodie and Henry slaps him on his chest. "Stop staring." He told him and Alex smiled coyly.
"Can I see?" He asks and Henry shook his head at him covering his neck higher, "N-No." He replied and Alex pouted but he couldn't understand why Henry is hiding it from him. "Why not?" He asks but Henry is already walking out from the room headed to the end of the hallway and Alex followed.
"Not the time Alex. Let's go." He says and Alex sighs letting him sped up a little when he saw Phillip talking to Shan at the end of the hall. Phillip was cleared from his injury and already back to work few weeks after his sling was off and Alex was happy that he was no longer in cast leaving only Henry being the last one to recover.
"How was it?" Phillip asks Henry and he shrugs causing him to turn his head towards Alex behind him. He shook his head at Phillip and he didn't question him further knowing Henry hates being pushed to answering questions he doesn't like.
.
The ride home was silence, the only thing Alex could hear was Henry's tapping his finger over the car panel by his window side and he couldn't help leaning closer to him. "Babe." He called whispering into Henry's ear and he jumped at Alex's sudden closeness. "Huh?" He asks and Alex eyebrow furrowed at his reaction. "Are you alright? What is it?" He asks and Henry shrugs, "Nothing, what's up with you?" He asks and Alex retracts from his earlier position and saw Henry pulled out his EarPods and starts plugging his ear silencing the world from his mind and probably from Alex's constant assuring question.
The moment they reached home, Henry ran up to his room and closed the door behind leaving Alex and Phillip behind wondering at his behavior. "What's up with him?" Phillip asks and Alex still had the same look on his face since they left the hospital. "I have no idea." He replied shortly before joining Phillip headed to the music room joining Bea and Hope.
"Hello sweetheart." Alex immediately rushed to Hope in her crib by the window while Bea sat there on the long couch reading her books and smiled when Alex raised her from the crib after he sanitized his hand and won't stop kissing her.
"Gosh, you are getting bigger by days." Alex says placing her on his lap after he sat down by Bea's side and Phillip sat across from them. Charles handed them their tea cup and Alex declined his offer wanting to hold Hope in his arm.
Bea cocked her head out to look for Henry but surprised when he wasn't joining them. "Where's Henry?" She asks and Alex lifted his gaze towards Phillip across from him before he continued playing with Hope on his lap.
"Upstairs. Bedroom." Phillip replied shortly and Bea straightened herself up from the couch. "Is everything alright with him?" She asks and both Phillip and Alex sighed, "God knows, he's being quiet lately. Hiding himself in the bedroom." He adds and Bea could see Alex is hiding the pain in his eyes.
"Someone need to talk to him then." She suggest and Phillip scoffed, "Go ahead. Barely get few words out of him nowadays." He says placing the tea cup on his side before scrolling through his iPad.
"Alex?" She asks and Alex still had his gaze at Hope in his lap. She smiles when Alex smiles especially when they both shared the same dimple on the side of their cheek. "I would prefer to talk to Hope, got more words than Henry ever did." He replied and Bea sighs, "Alex.." She cupped his arm and he smiled at her, "It's okay, Henry is complicated." He replied before he grabbed Hope and stood up. "We're gonna take a walk in the garden." He says and Bea sighs longly nodding at him. She watches how Alex carried Hope in his arm and left the music room closing the door behind him.
"Talk to your brother, please!" Bea told Phillip sternly after Alex left and Phillip lifted his gaze at her. "Why?" He asks and Bea cocked her head to the side in disbelief. "What do you mean why? Something is clearly wrong with these two, especially Henry!" She yells and Phillip turned his iPad off with a clicked before placing it down on the couch next to him.
"Give it time. I think he's feeling insecure about his relationship with Alex." He adds and Bea won't give the satisfaction of leaving this matter alone.
"Pip, your brother is hiding something. Before it turns to something else, you better get your arse in and pulled him out." She says and Phillip grunted at her. "Why do I have to talk to him? We're men! Men don't talk, we-" he stopped himself with his one palm raised and Bea shook her head in disbelief.
"You're exhausting!" She says placing her book down on the table harsh before she stood up. "Where are you going?" He asks her confused as she walked to the door and turned on her heels to face him, "To talk to our brother arsehole!" She slammed the door close leaving Phillip by himself with Charles in the music room.
As Bea walked the hallway upstairs headed to Henry's bedroom, she couldn't help feeling anxious at what she could find inside. Henry has been distancing himself from them since he got back from the hospital and he didn't even say goodbye to Ellen and Oscar when they left.
Bea stops by his door and hovers her knuckles to knock. She took a deep breath before she taps on the wooden door and waited. Henry didn't answer to her knocks expectedly and she decides to enter anyway.
She always love Henry interior design of his room, the way he organized his books from fiction to non fiction, his setup for his music plays around the corner by the tall window and finally his huge bed right the corner of his bathroom.
"Hen?" She called turning to the corner and saw him lying on bed with his back facing her. She noticed he wasn't asleep when she saw him staring at the window next to his bed. "Hen?" She called again before sitting on his bed by his side and Henry finally inhaled sharply turning his gaze at her.
"I'm not hungry Bea." He says pulling his pillow higher up his neck and Bea sighs, "I didn't asks." She says and Henry turned his gaze at her. "Then what are you doing here?" He asks leaning his head back against the pillow.
"Hen, what is it? Don't keep inside, tell me what's wrong." She stroked his arm up and down and he sighed desperately at her. He decides to sit up on bed facing her before pulling the hoodie zipper down and lifted his shirt exposing his scar on the middle of his chest. The faint red line healed nicely and it contrast with his pale skin which explains why he was so insecure about it.
"Are you worried about what Alex is going to think about this?" She asks and Henry lowered his shirt and zipping up his hoodie before keeping his gaze over his folded legs. "It's hideous." He whispered and Bea pressed her lips together.
"I don't think Alex would think of it that way." She starts and Henry looked up to meet her gaze. "You don't know that." His eyes are pleading and Bea grabbed his hand intertwined it with hers. "Have you asks him?" Henry lowered his gaze back on their clasped hand and remained silence before she lifted his chin to face her again. "You know how I know why he won't look at you differently?" She asks and Henry shook his head softly at her.
"This." She taps on his healed wrist seeing the faint scar line over his previous attempt. He remembers the way Alex pressed his lips over his scar made his heart flutters. He didn't realized his eyes are flooded with tears when he stares at his own mistake and Bea held his hand tighter.
"Talk to him. Don't treat him like this. It's not fair." Henry stares at his sister's face before his eyes softened. She was right, Alex didn't deserved this, none of this. Or everything that Henry did to make him this miserable.
.
Later that day Alex walked back to Henry's room after dinner hoping he could see him. Henry didn't joined them for dinner for the past few days and he starts to become worry of him. He knocks on the door before he entered finding Henry's room darker than usual.
He flipped the switch on and found Henry asleep curling himself on bed with his dinner tray by the table untouched and he sighed. He took off his shirt and his pants leaving him on his brief, turning the switched off before he climbed on Henry's bed. He wrapped his arms around Henry's stomach from behind and he felt Henry sighed in his touch. Henry flipped his body and sunk deeper into Alex's chest pressing his face over Alex's neck.
Alex rubs soft circles on his back and pressed his lips over Henry's forehead feeling Henry's hot breaths fanning over his neck. He let Henry laid his head over his arm and Alex wrapped his leg over Henry's waist pulling him closer causing him to stir to wake.
"Alex?" Henry calls still had his eyes closed and Alex hushed him back to sleep. "Shh, it's okay. Go back to sleep." He brushed his fingers over Henry's blonde hair and he sighs in his touch. "I miss you bastard." Alex whispered and Henry looked up to meet his gaze.
"Wanna tell me what's going on inside those pretty head of yours?" He asks and Henry stares at his face inches away from him before he shook his head. "I'm not leaving Hen, if that's what you worried about?" Henry inhaled his breath sharply lifting his gaze towards the ceiling and Alex saw a single tear fell on his temple.
"Babe, what is it?" He asks brushing his thumb over Henry's tear stained cheek and Henry lips whimper in his tears. "You're scaring me, what is it?" He cupped Henry's cheek and Henry leaned into his palm before he spoke.
"When will I stop being a burden to you? To everyone?" He asks shuddering and Alex could see the guilt in his eyes when he did. "Why did you say that?" He pulled Henry's chin to face him and felt his throat swallowed dryly in his touch.
"Hen you are never a burden, you hear me? I love you, more than anything in this world." He says and Henry licked his lower lips.
"Do you love me enough to leave me and go back to your life in the US?" Henry asks and Alex pulls back surprised by his request, "Hen do say stuffs like that. You know I don't like it." He says and Henry sighed stroking his fingers over Alex's stubbles chin. "Do you?" He asks again and Alex had his eyebrow furrowed. "No!" He answered sternly without any hesitation.
"What if I force you too." Henry says and Alex stares at Henry's face trying to understand him better. "Hen stop this. I am not going anywhere. You might wanna get used to me clinging on you cause I'm not leaving." He says pulling Henry closer to him with his legs. "You can't make me leave Hen. Not until I have a valid reason to do so."
Henry tried to hide his smile from Alex but failed when Alex wrapped his arms around Henry's back and before Henry could say anything further, Alex palmed his mouth to silence him. "Shh, go to sleep. I'm tired." He says and pulled his palm away from Henry's thick lips and pressed his lips instead. Henry was stunned by his act but Alex couldn't be bothered by Henry death stares.
Henry tried to wiggle himself out from Alex's grip but he held him stronger and finally Henry gave up trying to flee from Alex's tight grip. "You're insufferable." Henry whispered and Alex snorts at his attempt, "I know." He adds and pressed Henry closer to his chest again.
.
Alex woke up middle of the night when he heard a sound of someone gagging in the room. When he finally woke, he found himself in an empty bed without Henry besides him. "Hen?" He called trying to find him but failed. He got off the bed and headed to Henry's bathroom finding the lights are on and rushed inside.
"Henry?" He called and the moment he pushed the door opened, he found Henry on the floor of his bathroom, practically hugging the toilet in front of him.
"Hen? Henry are you okay? What is it?" He asks and Henry still spilling his guts inside the toilet bowl. "H-Hurts." He croaked clenching on his chest and starts spilling out more of the yellowish bile out from his mouth.
Alex stood up grabbing the small towel from the counter and starts running cold water to soak it. He opened the cabinet door to look for some pain relieves for Henry to take and when he held the bottle, his heart dropped.
"Hen how much you've taken this?" He asks rattling the bottle beside him. The bottle should last him for the next couple of months since they just came back from the appointment yesterday but he counted it's only barely a few left inside and it got him more worried.
Henry didn't reply and continued on spilling out his stomach content and Alex puts back the bottle inside the cabinet before crouching next to him. He pressed the cold towel against his burning forehead and Henry breaths quicken in each seconds. "Remind me to scold you later." Henry gasped in pain as he raised his body and leaned against Alex's chest on the floor.
Alex pressed the cold towel against Henry's forehead closer to his chest as they both sat on the floor with Henry in between his legs leaning against him breathless.
"Breathe, slower." Alex said calmly and Henry tried to follow before he doubled over in pain clenching his stomach. "OH GOD!" He grunted gripping his palm over his stomach in pain over Alex's knees and it got Alex worried he might ripped his wound for being in such pain.
"Wait here." He told him and tried to leave to get Phillip but Henry stops him by grabbing his wrist. "N-No! No please! Don't tell Phillip! Please." Henry begs and Alex looked down at his clasped hand over his wrist torn between lying to Phillip or leaving Henry in such crucial pain.
"Let's get you to bed. Come on." Alex raised him up from the floor and guides him back on the bed. He was drenched with sweats making his skin glistened and his face turned shades paler like he just lost half of his blood from his body.
Alex sat him on the edge of the bed with Henry still clenching over his lower chest and he starts gagging again. Alex immediately grabbed the trash can by his bedside and Henry hurled over spilling his stomach inside. It shocked Alex when he saw a strand of blood mixed with bile running down his chin.
"Hen I need to get help." He says and Henry stops him again, "Please, please. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry for taking that pain killers. I need it." He apologized over and over and Alex sighed before he wiped Henry's mouth with a tissue on his bedside.
"Sorry isn't changing what you just did. You know that addiction to drugs is what's killing your mother and we both know that." Alex voice sharp and hurts Henry deep in his core. He lowered his gaze down feeling ashamed of himself before his stomach stabbed him in pain again. "Argghh!" He groaned crunching his stomach in pain and fell on his knees right on Alex's lap. Alex caught him placing Henry closer to his chest.
"Oh God Alex! I'm dying aren't I? I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!" Henry pleads gripping on his chest and his breathing pace has quicken than the last one.
"You're not dying drama queen! That's what you get when you kept taking those ibuprofen like it was candy! Come on, let's get you up to rest." Alex pulled him back on bed and starts undo his clothes. Henry stops him when he tried to unzip his hoodie he still had on and Alex clicked his tongue slapping his hand away.
"Stop resisting. There is nothing you can do to scare me Henry. I am beyond the point of my patience with you right now." He unzipped the hoodie revealing Henry's plain shirt underneath before he slipped his arm out from the sleeves. Henry's shirt practically drenched in sweats with his hair slicked to the side sticking on to his forehead, "Alex- please." Henry calls stopping him when he tried to lift his shirt off.
"Enough Henry! Enough! I don't care if you think I'm disgusted by whatever you think I would but you need to stop think about me that way!" He yells and Henry stops pushing his hand off and let him raised his shirt from his sweating body.
Alex exhaled tiredly when he saw Henry tried to covers himself with his arm crossed over his chest and pain struck him again right in the middle. He hunched forward resting his elbows over his knees when Alex grabbed the towel and pressed it over his neck and Henry sighs relief by the coolness.
Henry sat up letting Alex runs the towel down on his chest and he caught him staring at the scar that splits right in the middle of his chest. His hand runs the cold towel down on his bare chest but his eyes kept focus on Henry's scar.
"Kept staring and you just proving my point." Henry says still huffing in his breaths and Alex lifted his gaze at him from kneeling in between his legs.
"I'm not allowed to stare at my handsome boyfriend?" He asks and Henry scoffed before he coughed vigorously and Alex can hear the pain in his throat. He grabbed the glass bottle by Henry bedside and uncapped it before he guides it to Henry's lips. Henry took the sip, littlest amount possible not wanting to throw up again, especially not on Alex.
"Let's get back to bed." He told Henry and Henry nods laying on his side while Alex helped raising his legs on the bed. Henry curled up in a ball raising his knees close to his chest. He groaned in pain and Alex worried he might throw up again so he pulls the trash can close to his side.
Henry finally falls asleep around five in the morning while Alex stayed awake by his side. He sighed pressing his lips over Henry's sweaty temple and Henry didn't even stir. His exhaustion made him falls asleep although Alex still contemplate to run and get some help but since Henry stopped vomiting for about an hour ago and finally asleep, so he stopped from getting help.
He stepped out of Henry's bedroom shutting the door close behind him and walked along the hallways and stopped when he heard a door open behind him.
"Alex?" Bea's voice breaks softly behind him and he sighed turning on his heels in exhaustion. "You're up early, everything okay?" She asks and Alex assumed she's already up early because of Hope. He swallowed his throat dryly trying to find the right word to answer her but the only thing that he could think off is Henry's pale face and his grunted voice the whole night causing tears to flood in his eyes.
"Alex, hey, what is it?" She asks stepping closer to him as Alex leaned his body against the wall and broke down in tears. "Hey, hey, look at me. What is it?" She asks cupping his cheek in her small palm and Alex licked his lower lips before he took a deep breaths.
"Henry was up all night in pain." He starts shuddering in his tears. "What? Why? Is he alright?" She asks turning her glance behind her and notice the door was close.
Alex shook his head at her before he inhaled his breath deeply. "He took almost all of his painkiller and spend the rest of the nights hugging the toilet." He could see Bea's face dropped and she gasped after she heard him. "What?!" She immediately turned and sprinted towards Henry's bedroom and Alex followed her behind finding Henry still asleep in bed just the way he left him.
"Jesus Henry." Bea stroked her brother's cheek feeling the coldness of his skin and noticed how pale he got. "We need to get him to the hospital. I don't like how pale he looks." Bea said and was about to leave when Alex grabbed her wrist. "No. Henry didn't want Phillip to know about this." He said and Bea turned her gaze at him sharply.
"Why?" She asks and Alex shrugs, "Beats me. He kept saying how he didn't want to burden anyone anymore." Alex lowered his gaze down over Henry's body on the bed and Bea sighs. "He told me to go back to the States."
"HE DID WHAT?!" She yells and Alex hushed her not wanting to wake Henry up but her high pitch voice didn't help and Henry starts to stirs in his sleep. He groaned turning on his back and surprised when he saw Bea stood by his bedside with Alex standing next to her with redness over his eyes and nose.
"W-What's going on?" He asks clueless and Bea held her waist turning her body to face him. "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND??!" She yells and Henry turned his gaze towards Alex beside her. "Good job on not telling anyone." He says before raising himself on the bed and leaned against the headboard.
"What do you expect me to do Hen? Lie to everyone how you tried killing yourself?" He yelled and Henry clicked his tongue at them rudely.
"I wasn't! Okay? I was in pain and I need to-" he paused darting his gaze away from them and Bea took a seat on the bed next to him. "Hen, if you're in pain why didn't you tell us. We could talk about it but don't go under the same path she did." Bea could see Henry turned his head sharply at her.
"You think I will be- just like her?" Henry eyes pleading with guilt and Bea sighed holding on to his hand over his blanket. "I already lost you once Hen, don't make me lose you again." She whispered and Henry eyes lifted to meet her eyes.
"I'm sorry." Henry whispered.
"That's alright, now tell me are you still in pain?" She asks and Henry shook his head at her, "Don't lie Hen." Alex adds and he exhaled longly over the bed.
"Just my stomach." He replied and Bea nods, "We'll get you something for that." She says before standing up and Henry watched her left the room leaving only him and Alex alone, in silence.
"Thanks for blabbing." Henry mutters not wanting to look at Alex in his eyes. He could hear Alex scoffed at his words with his hand grabbing his own waist with his burning gaze.
"Thanks for keeping me up all night asshole." Alex says sarcastically and Henry turned his gaze softly at him. Guilt ridden his subconscious and he wanted to say sorry to him but he knows better not to say anything cause Alex will told him not to apologized anymore.
"You know if you wanted to get rid of me that badly, I would have left weeks ago." Alex says grabbing his hoodie that Henry wore last night and wore it over his body. Henry couldn't say anything that won't make him feel better. Truth is, he wanted Alex to stay, longer than he should but he knew if he did, Alex won't have a future here with him.
Due to Henry's silence, Alex gave up waiting for him to say anything and decides to leave the room, leaving him with his guilt.
Henry saw how Alex runs out and slammed the door on his way out and the moment he did, tears broke from Henry's eyes and he sobs gripping on to his chest. The stabbing pain is nothing compared to the one he felt right now after hurting Alex like this. He wished he could run out and chased him but he was too weak to chase after him and there is nothing he could say right now that would make Alex feels better. So instead, he laid back in bed curling up into a ball and cried himself back to sleep hoping that all of this was nothing but a nightmare.
.
"Good morning." Phillip said cheery by the dining table and both Alex and Bea didn't exactly greeted him with the same amount of happiness. But they could see how happy he got lately being engaged to Martha and now that Henry is out of the woods with Catherine gone, he couldn't be more happier.
"Morning." Bea says in a low tone and poked around her oatmeal before her while Alex stares at his pancakes stack in silent causing Phillip to wonder why they both shared the same grim over their faces. "Henry still asleep?" He asks and Alex finally shot up to meet his gaze, "Uhm, yeah." He lied but Phillip didn't even realized it cause he was too distracted by Hope in a crib by the corner and starts picking her up.
"I got you something yesterday but you were asleep." He cooed and placed a gold bracelet over her tiny arms. "Pip stop spoiling her." She raised her cup of tea towards her lips glaring at Phillip holding her daughter in his arm before he took a seat by the table. He eyed Alex across from him and noticed the usual swollen eyes and red nose to know that something is up.
"Alright, either tell me or don't tell me, I'm gonna find out soon enough." Phillip asks and both Bea and Alex shared a glance.
"Something about Henry I assumed. Is he alright? Is this has gotten to do why he has been locking himself up since he got home?" He asks holding Hope on his lap as he took a sip of his coffee. "Can you promise not too freak out if we told you?" Bea asks and Phillip sighed longly tapping on his finger over the table.
"Do I need a reason too?" He asks.
"Not if you wanted to know." Alex adds.
He nods at them pressing his lips together before his eyes lowered to Hope on his lap. "Henry told me to leave, go back to US." Alex starts that cause Phillip to turn his head sharply at him. "What? Why?" He asks.
"Beats me. Told me I should go back if I love him enough." Alex still had his gaze lowered over the stack of pancake in front of him. He barely had any appetite considering what happened last night.
"Is that it? Is that why everyone is upset?" Phillip asks and they both turned in silenced again. "Henry finished half of his painkiller bottle. Spend the rest of the night in the bathroom spilling his stomach out." Bea said since Alex couldn't utter any words. "You should have start with that!" He half yelled not wanting to scare Hope in his lap and they both sighed lowering their gaze from his burning gaze. He could hear Phillip exhaled tilting his head up before he stood and lowered Hope into the crib.
"Do I need to go upstairs and check on him?" Phillip asks leaning his arms over the crib still had his backs towards them. "I don't think that's a good idea. Henry told us not to tell you anything." Phillip turned on his heels and crossed his arms over his chest staring at Alex across from him.
"He thinks he's a burden to you." Alex continues. Phillip sighs longly shaking his head at them with his hand gripped tightly on his waist. His jaw clenched in stress with his eyes stares ahead on the ceiling. "What do we do?" He asks. His eyes returned back at them both over the table in silence.
"At this moment, nothing." Bea says before she stood and grabbed Phillip's coat and let his hand slides into the sleeves before she stroked his shoulder, "For now, just go to work. I'll try to talk to him." Phillip sighs again shaking his head contemplating to leave his family considering his mind won't be at ease for today. His thought would be consumed by Henry and he would wonder if Henry would be alright by the time he got home.
