Part 47
"How did he do that?" Alex asks while pacing in the hallway with the rest of them. Henry is finally awake and Alex barely had his moment with him when they were escorted out from the room.
"What?" Phillip asks and Alex stop pacing immediately, turning his gaze at him, "Bounced back. He was sedated." He says and Phillip turned his gaze at Bea across from him, "Don't know. My guess is, he heard us fighting." Bea replies shortly and Alex furrowed his eyebrow at them. "About what?" He asks and they both turned silent.
"About who's going to hell. They both are." Shan adds and both Phillip and Bea turned their head glaring at him and he pressed his lips together. Alex tried to hide his smile from curving on the corner of his lips when he saw Phillip turned his glared towards him.
"What happened? Why are you all in the corridor?" Ellen sudden voice heard as she approached startling them. Alex didn't realized her coming early and he jumped at her sudden voice behind him. "MUM! Henry's awake!" Alex yelled cheery and Ellen turned her gaze sharply at Phillip wondering if it's true and he shook his head at her softly without Alex noticing. "He still not out of the woods yet. They are still checking on him." He replied and Ellen fake a smile seeing how happy her son is at the moment.
The door barged opened revealed the exhausted frown expression over the doctor's face and they all waited eagerly for him to say something. "Is he awake?" Alex asks with no hesitant in his voice. They all stared at the doctor waiting for him to reply his question.
"I don't like him to be out from sedation just yet. It's too risky." The doctor says and closed the door behind him. "Well if he's awake now so that's good news right?" Alex asks clearly hoping on the high hopes. The doctor sighs stroking his fingers over his temple before he lifted his gaze again.
"Do you know how big the abdomen artery is? His was leaked, TORN and repairing it? It's not like putting a duct tape over it and called it a day. I'm not a plumber, I'm a doctor and if I told you he's not ready to be taken off from the sedation, I meant it." He raised his voice a little causing them all stood there in stunt silence with their eyes shifted to look at each other.
"So...is he awake?" Alex finally asks and the doctor sighs rubbing his temple with his fingers, "Unfortunately, yes. Look, I'm glad he's finally awake and able to breathe on his own but his condition is still fragile and the minute he showed any sign of bleeding or disoriented, I'm putting him back under sedation." He pointed at Henry's door and they all gasped a sigh of relief after they heard him.
Alex didn't waste anymore time and barged into Henry's room finding him sat up on bed and the nurse finished suctioning his throat. She placed an oxygen masks over Henry's face and immediately he saw Alex limped his way into his room, he pulled it off his face. "Nu-uh, you keep it on or I'm going to ask the doctor to put back the tube down your throat." She told him sternly and Alex laughs when Henry rolled his eyes at her groggily.
"You're awake in two minutes and already annoyed other people Hen?" Alex asks and immediately wrapped his arm around Henry's pulling him into his tight hug. Henry's voice is barely audible due to the face masks he had on but Alex could hear the hoarseness in his voice paining him and when their chest collides, he grunted causing Alex to pull back.
"I'm sorry." He mutters lowering his gaze down on Henry's split gown exposing his bare chest covered with a long dressing right in the middle that ends barely above his navel. Henry covers himself feeling insecure by Alex gaze and Alex immediately shifted his stares back on his pale face.
"I miss you so much." He whispered leaning his lips over Henry's forehead and he could feel Henry's weak gripped on his hand tightened. His eyes closed drowsing in between his ability to keep himself awake and he noticed how hard Henry is holding on to his pain. Each movement he made it's like pins and needles on Henry's skin and his eyes shuts tight creating wrinkles over his temple.
"Henry?" Phillip's voice echoed behind Alex and Henry turned his gaze towards Phillip standing behind Alex and starts to sob before he tried to raise his arm for him. He winced immediately when he lifted his arms up higher and Phillip gripped his hand stopping him. "N-No, stay, I'm just glad you're okay." He says pulling himself closed and wrapped his arm around Henry's neck.
Alex pulled away and stood by the end of Henry's leg with Ellen and Oscar on his side watching the beautiful reunion. Henry sobs in Phillip's chest muttering words they barely understood due to the mask on his face. His eyes lurked around Phillip's face and finally down on his arm covered in a sling. He could see the tears flooded his eyes when he saw Phillip arm and he could hear him mumbling sorry over and over.
"It's okay, it's okay. It's not your fault." Phillip kept assuring him by cupping Henry's cheek and stroked his thumb over Henry's skin. "I'm fine, I'm fine. See? I'm alright." Phillip kept telling him and Henry finally nods after he was reassure.
"Hen?" Bea appeared by Phillip side and extended both her arms for her hug and Henry sobs in her embrace. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Henry repeats behind his mask and Bea pulls away cupping his cheek to make sure he look into her eyes when she speak, "It's not your fault. You hear me. Stop saying that." She says gripping harder on his neck.
"I said things." He mutters and Bea shook her head at him. "Not now. Okay. It's all in the past." She assured him again and his tears fall on his cheek. "I'm just glad you okay." Bea whispered before pulling him into her hug again.
.
Henry was still weak after he's awake and they let him rests for now. He was still sleeping when Alex sat by his side holding on to his hand. Henry's image laid right in front of him made him feels like a huge ton of weight is been lifted off from his chest but the twisting knot right in the pit of his stomach still settles inside making a perfect home whenever he's around Henry.
He didn't realized when Henry is finally awake and was staring at him from his bed. The rest of them are no longer in the room and Henry noticed how Alex was staring into spaces when he finally spoke.
"What got you thinking so hard?" He asks and Alex shot up his gaze immediately and his eyes brightened at the sight Henry's awake.
"Hai." Alex leaned kissing him in between his eyebrow and Henry exhaled his breaths in relief. Alex brushes his fingers over Henry's hair by his temple and kept staring at his pale face when Henry asks him again, "What?" He couldn't figure out why Alex kept staring at him. But slowly he could see his eyes glistened in tears and Alex raised Henry's tangled hand over his cheek.
"Hey, what is it?" Henry asks cupping Alex's cheek and a single tear streaked fell on Henry's hand. Alex whimpered in tears pressing his cheek deeper in Henry's palm. "Alex." Henry calls and Alex turned his gaze back to him.
"I'd lost you Hen, again. You were dead and I- I was all alone." Alex sobs and Henry's worried gaze softens at his words. "Babe-" Henry calls trying to straighten himself up but the pain shoots him directly on his chest made him regret his movement earlier. "No- don't. The doctor said you might bleed out again if you move so much." He pushed Henry back on the bed and he sighed longly in desperation.
"Rest Henry. Just rest." Alex stroked his arm and slowly Henry's eyes drifted back to sleep.
.
The sedation made him slept a quite amount of time in bed and somewhere in the middle of the night Henry woke up finding himself alone in the dark and he panicked.
He tried to reach for anything that he could grabbed on but surrounding him is too dark for him to see and he wonders if it's another dream.
"Henry."
That soft voice called him again and he tried to hold on, searching for the voice in the dark but he couldn't see anything and the voice seems distant.
"Please." Henry begs.
"Wake up Hen." The voice whispers again and Henry could feel his heart hastened, fear crippling inside of him.
"Open your eyes." The voice told him and slowly, he did.
When Henry's eyelid flutters to open, he could see the room displayed right in front of him. The monitor beeping sounds faster than usual and slowly Henry could hear and feel his heart stabilizing again. The darkness no longer lurks and the bright room welcomed him in relief.
"Hen?" He heard a soft voice calling out his name next to him when he darted his gaze to his side. Bea was sitting next to him in a chair clasping their hand together.
"Bea?" He called and Bea smiled when he's finally awake. "There you are. What were you dreaming about?" She asks and Henry swallowed his throat dryly at her. "Thirsty?" She asks and Henry nods weakly. He didn't feel hunger but his throat dries like he swallowed sands.
Bea grabbed the glass of water next to Henry's bed and helped him raised his head up before guiding the straw over his lips. Luckily his oxygen is maintaining enough since last night for him not to use the face mask anymore and they had changed his breathing tube into the curling one under his nose. Henry took a sip swallowing the cold water feeling the coolness running down his throat and he exhaled in relief.
"Where's everyone?" He asks as his eyes searched around the room finding no one is there but her. "They all needed to stretch their legs so they went to grab some coffee in the cafeteria." Bea says pulling Henry's blanket over his chest. She closed the gown that splits exposing Henry's bare chest and her eyes caught staring at Henry's dressing over his mid chest.
"Don't." Henry stops her, "Stop staring." He says and Bea lifted her gaze back at him with a glistened eyes. "S-Sorry." She covers Henry's chest and surprised when Henry grabbed her hand in his. "Bea." He called and she hummed in response. "I'm sorry." He starts and Bea couldn't lifted her gaze at her brother.
"I never meant to insult you like that. I'm so sorry." She could hear the break in his voice before lifting her gaze at him. "I'm not angry at you Hen. I'm angry at her for making you behave like that. But she's dead now and there is no one is going to hurt you alright?" She cupped Henry's cheek and Henry leaned against her palm.
"How?" He asks and Bea inhaled sharply before she answered, "Shan shot her." She could see Henry's eyes lowered and his gripped loosen over Bea's hand. "Did Phillip buried her next to father?" He asks but curious when Bea didn't answer him. "She uhm- she's still downstairs in the morgue." She says unable to look at Henry in his eyes.
Just in time, the door barged opened revealing the rest of them walked into the room and Henry's eyes caught Phillip walking in with Alex by his side.
"Why did you let her stayed in morgue?" He asks and Phillip was taken back by his tone. "I'm sorry? Good afternoon to you too Your Highness!" He spat and Henry rolled his eyes at him, "Pip! You let her rot!" Henry raised his voice again and this time he found his strength to straighten his back and sat up on the bed.
"I voted cremation but she won't let me." Phillip pointed at Bea with his finger whilst he's holding his coffee in his hand. "I told you not too! Henry won't let it!" Bea spat back and the rest of them including Ellen and Oscar took a seat by the couch not wanting to interfere while Alex came around Henry's bed and sat on his other side.
"How could you? She should be buried by father side, we all know that." Henry continue and it's Phillip turned to roll his eyes before he placed down his coffee by the table. "She lost the right when she tried to kill you Hen!" He raised his voice and Alex saw how fast Henry turned his head at him.
"She's our mother!" He screamed and Phillip held his waist staring at him. "She stopped being your mother when father dies! We are done having this conversation!" Phillip dismissed him and Henry seek help from his sister next to him. "No! Bury her next to father. Or I will make sure you are buried with her instead!" Henry yells and Alex held his shoulder back trying to ease his anger.
"What makes you think you will buried me first?!" Phillip asks and Henry clenched his jaw tighter. "You're older!" He yells.
"You're sicker!" Phillip yelled back and they had enough of them bickering.
"ALRIGHT! ENOUGH! ALL OF YOU!!" Oscar yells stepping in between them. Henry laid back on bed palming his chest in pain and Phillip sighed longly gripping on his temple while standing in the middle of the room.
"Henry why are you determined to bury her in family's lot?" Bea asks and Henry didn't lift his gaze towards her. "Cause no matter what, she's my mother, our mother." He heard Phillip scoffed behind her and he glared at him.
"She's not mine. She's a parasite living in our life and I'm glad she's gone." Phillip adds and Alex noticed how Henry face dropped by his words.
"Then what am I?" He asks softly earning Phillip a glanced.
"Hen." Alex called holding on to his palm by his side. Henry didn't lift his gaze towards him but instead kept staring over the blanket covering his legs.
"What are you talking about Hen?" Phillip asks stepping closer next to Bea. "Am I not a parasite too Pip. Draining you physically, mentally in worrying about me constantly?" Henry lifted his gaze at him and he could see his eyes glistened before he continued.
"She was sick. She was not herself. Why are you punishing her like this?" Henry asks again.
"Why aren't you? She's the reason why she's sick. She sought drugs instead of facing her problems! That's what happened when you seek permanent solution to a temporary problem. She should have known we needed her at the time but instead, she abandoned us!"
"She didn't abandoned us. She was missing father!" Henry defends
"I was missing father too! But yet I had to grow up and takes care of you! Both of you! Where was she?" Phillip yells and Henry tears fell on his cheek.
"She abandoned us in the middle of our grieving. She chose those over her own children and I would never forget it till the day I die. So should you Hen."
"She was sorry." Henry adds and Phillip sighed at him.
"There is nothing that she could do to undo all the things she had done Hen. Remember that. Father would agree with me." Phillip says and Henry turned his head at him. "Father won't." He says and Phillip eyebrow furrowed at him.
"He told me she was sick. She was not herself and all the things she did, that wasn't her. I saw the real her when I was dead. She was alive, happy, completely unaware of what she had done. But she told me that she was sorry for hurting you. For not being there for you." Henry lips trembled at the dreams he vividly remember.
"What did you see?" Alex asks leaning closer to him. "Just fields, endless fields of golden wheat and the ember sky. We stood by the cliffs, my father was there, and so does-" Henry stops himself before he continued and Phillip sighs.
"Fine! Bury her next to father. I won't lay a flower for her, not in a lifetime." Phillip says and Henry still had his gaze lowered keeping himself in silent.
"Alright, all of you. Let's take a breath for now." Ellen stepped in and pulled Phillip by the couch and told him to sit there. Before he could protest, Ellen placed her index finger over her lips to silence him and he saw she was trying to make him see how upset Henry is right now.
"Hen, the doctor said you can finally starts eating something soft. What you had in mind?" She asks stepping closer to him by his bed. Henry shook his head softly before he laid back on bed and turned to his side letting her to face his back instead. Bea stroked her palm over Henry's back and sighs.
"Alrighty then." Ellen says and smiled, "I guess we let him see her tomorrow then." Ellen says to Bea and she smiled when Henry immediately turned to face her. "Who?" He asks and Ellen smirked when he asks. "Your niece." She asks and Henry furrowed eyebrow soften at her words.
He eyed Ellen walked towards the corner and saw the stroller parked on the side when she lifted the covers and cooed. "She's the cutest thing Hen." Alex says and Henry turned his gaze at Alex by his side and smiled.
Ellen cradled her in her arm before giving her to Bea next to him. "Henry, meet Hope." She says and immediately Henry gaze widen at her name. "What?" He asks and Bea lifted her gaze at him, "That's her name. Hope Enfield-Fox." She says and Henry could finally see her face. Those chubby cheeks with pinkish tone and her furrowed eyebrow - Henry recognized those immediately.
Bea pulled out her beanie that had a big pink bow on her head and revealed her blonde hair causing Henry to gasps at her. He runs her fingers over her hair and saw how she smiled in her dreams probably still dreaming about her running around in heaven's garden.
Something familiar about her face that Henry couldn't put his finger about this. Her thick lips, her smile, her soft blonde hair. "She looks like you." Alex says from his side and Henry turned to face him. "N-No, I think she looks like dad." Henry says and Bea immediately shot her gaze at him. She smiled turning her gaze towards Phillip by the couch and she could see he tried to hide his tears when Henry said so. "You're right." Bea says with tears flooded her eyes. "Wanna hold her?" She asks and Henry eyes brightened at her offer but he declined, "N-No, I don't want to drop her." He says and Bea clicked her tongue at him. "You won't. You know why?" She asks and stood while Henry shaking his head.
"Because I know you're going to protect her no matter what." She says placing her on Henry's lap right in between his straighten legs. She still slept through all the movement and Henry felt Alex shifted to his side wrapping his arm around his shoulder before stroking his thumb over her cheek.
"She's gorgeous." He says and Henry smiled nodding at him. Alex placed a kiss over Henry's temple and he immediately held her up to face her.
"I promise father to hold on to you. Now I know what he meant." He says and the rest of them turned their gazes at each other. "What else did you see Hen?" Ellen asks and Henry turned his head at her still holding Hope in his arm lifting her on her feet. "Nothing." He lied not wanting to say further and decides to keep his dream to himself.
.
Phillip stood by the metal stretcher in the middle of the morgue staring at Catherine's lifeless body in front of him. His eyes kept staring at her half opened eyes and her dirty blonde hair covered with blood they had washed off but still had few residue over her side. His fist clenched over his side while he stood by her side and his eyes flooded with tears. The stench over her dead rotting body didn't bother him too much knowing that was the only thing he was holding onto in reassuring himself that she is dead, for good.
"I hate you so much. You are no longer here but yet you had such impact on him. Why can't you just- leave us alone!" Phillip yelled before he bangs on the metal rails next to her side.
"Henry might forgive you. But I never will. I will never forgive what you did to us, to me!" Phillip words seethed through his teeth letting a single tear fell right on his cheek. He immediately wiped it off and turned on his heels but before he left the room, he turned his last glanced at her over the metal table under those fluorescent light.
"Goodbye mum. I hope you rot in hell." He says letting more tears fell on his cheek before he decides to leave the morgue and her forever.
